As an avid reader, I can honestly say, one of the feelings that never gets old is stumbling across a new-to-me author—one that manages to catch me off guard with their characters or storytelling abilities—inciting a frenzy and leaving me with no choice but to keep my eyes glued to the pages. Or pick up another of their titles . . . immediately. Believe me, as much as I would like it to happen, it’s not a situation this finicky reader finds herself in often enough—which is why it feels akin to pure magic when it actually does.
I was fortunate, or maybe I should say swayed by some of my fellow thriller junkies, to give Michael Robotham’s most recent release, The Secrets She Keeps, a chance and it changed my world—reviving me from what felt like thriller fatigue. I was desperate to find out if his twisted tale of obsession was somehow just a fluke. Was the addictive quality I found in those two characters and their secrets something that was prevalent in all of Michael Robotham’s books? Based on the two I’ve now read, my answer would be a resounding yes.
Granted, Life or Death is very different in both tone and storyline from The Secrets She Keeps, but what is similar is the anxiety-inducing level of curiosity the author drums up and the way in which I found myself clinging to the characters. Whether good or bad in nature, this author’s character development is on-point; stellar you might even say. He has a knack for dragging feelings out of me that even I can't fully understand at times. So be prepared, you might find yourself like me, sympathizing with someone you never would have imagined giving a second thought.
For me, Audie pretty much stole the show from the start. Despite the situation—and whether it was his own doing or not—Audie's optimistic heart and positive outlook on life spoke to me on some entirely different level. Being an optimist myself, it wasn’t a stretch to say, I was harboring somewhat of a crush on the guy. All the while hoping, I wasn’t just wearing blinders. Aside from that, it was uncovering Audie’s truth, and ultimately his plan, that served as the catalyst for my frantic page turning.
What makes this story so darn compelling is the host of questions Audie will undoubtedly leave the reader to ponder, the obvious being—why would he escape from prison the day before he’s set to be released? After a rough ten-year stint behind bars, is there even one scenario that makes his choice seem logical in any capacity? Certainly not. But that's part of what makes this read so thrilling—it’s anything but predictable.
Fasten your seatbelt because this is comparable to a high-octane ride on a dark road riddled with blind turns, sharp bends, and a narrow shoulder. There are a host of other drivers—some you won’t trust behind the wheel—unforeseen roadblocks, debris littering the road and more than a few unplanned pitstops. Trust me, there’s no shortage of action here. If you’re like I was, living under a rock, having not yet experienced Mr. Robotham’s clever writing, consider this to be the gunshot that gets the race started: 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . GO!

Why or why would a man escape from prison the day before he is set to be released?
Audie Palmer has spent ten years behind bars for a crime in which four people died and seven million dollars went missing. From day one in prison there appeared to be a price on his head. He survived multiple attacks and beatings. Then he escaped and has everybody and their brother looking for him with everyone wondering why? Is Audie running from something or to something? What motivated his escape?
FBI agent, Desiree Furness is trying to figure out why Audie made his escape while taking a deep look at the initial investigation into Audie's arrest. She is often the brunt of the other agents jokes but she takes things in stride proving to be a strong and compelling character herself.
This was a captivating read that had me guessing from page one. Robotham has Audie looking back and remembering his past while trying to stay alive in the present. The suspense and tension rise with each page. I'm quickly becoming a Robotham fan. This book is well thought out, perfectly paced and riveting.

An Extraordinary Book!
I recently discovered this author and after reading ‘Bombproof’ I wrote that it was “one” of the best books read this year. Having just completed ‘Life or Death’, it is definitely “the best” book I’ve read this year (maybe even last year as well). The story is about Audie Palmer who was about to become a free man after finishing a ten year sentence in prison. So the question is, why would he escape the day before his release? Now on the run this book soon becomes a page turner and one of those hard to put down novels. It has remarkable characters throughout, along with his usual flare for snazzy, intelligent writing. If you haven’t read a Michael Robotham before you are in for a real treat with this extraordinary book.

This book is a true stand alone by Michael Robotham, without any characters that have appeared in previous books.
Audie Palmer has been in prison for ten years. He's being released tomorrow, but he escapes tonight. Moss Webster is just about the only friend Audie has in prison, and he had no inkling that Audie was planning this. Audie is on a mission. There are times he's lucky and, much more often, unlucky. He gets knocked down, but he doesn't stay down. Audie gets caught in a situation that is way beyond his control. As the blurb says, he's an underdog hero and I'm a sucker for underdogs.
I loved this book! It's so hard to choose, but this is pretty darn close to being my favorite Robotham book. The setting is Texas, unlike the previous books set in England, but the setting plays a minor role. It's the characters that make this book. Every one of them is fleshed out and realistic. Some readers might feel the storyline is a bit cliché, but it is so well written that I was thoroughly engrossed.
It's been a great pleasure reading Michael Robotham's books, and I'm all in when the next one is published this summer.

Yesterday, I was walking around town with my oldest son and granddaughter who are visiting from Oregon. Since we were near our local library, I thought I would go inside. For anyone who has suffered from social anxiety, which includes going in indoor spaces, this has been one of my challenges to overcome.

Usually, I just order books from my local library online and my husband picks them up for me. So, it was a treat for me to walk inside (with my mask) and look at the books displayed. This was one of them.

Author, Michael Robotham’s first 9 novels were focused on psychological suspense with his main character London policeman Vincent Ruiz and clinical psychologist Joe O’Loughlin, who suffers from Parkinson's.
Robotham who lives in Sydney, Australia, shifts the location of this book to Texas, and has focused on a variety of desperate characters, who do not resemble anything like his fragile and introspective professor O’Loughlin.
Having said that, his ability, as an author, to get under the character’s skin, makes this story very convincing and quite an exciting read.
Premise: The story opens with the escape from prison of Audie Palmer on the day before he is due to be released.
Palmer has been in prison for a decade for an armed robbery in which four people were killed, including two of his gang. The $7 million stolen in the robbery has never been recovered, and despite years of beatings, he has never spoken about it.
Now he is on the run.

And why did he leave one day before he was to be released anyway?
And not only are the police after him, an assortment of crooks are as well.
But Palmer’s mission isn’t about the money. His mission is to save a life.
Whose? And why?

With the help of some of my friends, I am on a Michael Robotham roll here and I have found a new author to add as a favourite for me.
I was hooked right from the start here with our main character Audie escapes from prison a day before he is to be released. It’s all about the why here and the suspense increases as the story unfolds. Things heat up and chaos erupts everywhere for Audie and I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough to get all those questions I had answered.
Life or Death is a compelling, well-plotted character-driven story with interesting and likable characters. Michael Robotham does such a great job here developing these well-layered characters and then peeling back those layers as we see them in action. I loved the dynamics between the characters and found myself quite entertained with the humour from some of the characters. There is plenty of action going on here with the characters and the Robotham shows us just how entertaining and compelling they are.
The past is skillfully weaved with the present and it all comes together to a very satisfying ending. I highly recommended.

EXCERPT: Audie rolls beneath the surface again. The water is warm and bitter and comes in everywhere, in his mouth and throat and ears. He wants to fight for air, but exhaustion drags him under. Legs burning, arms aching, he's not going to make it across. This is where it ends. Opening his eyes, he sees an angel dressed in white robes that billow and ripple around her as though she's flying rather than swimming. She spreads her arms to embrace him, naked beneath the translucent cloth. He can smell her perfume and feel the heat of her body pressed against his chest. Her eyes half open, her lips parted, waiting for a kiss.

Life Or Death is a superbly twisty thriller. Audie's escape from jail raises a very interesting question - why would a man escape from jail the day before he is due for release?
Robotham's characters are, as always, superbly depicted. Audie's story tugged at my heartstrings and kept me engrossed. His backstory is woven into his present story as he tries to stay ahead of the law enforcement agents desperately hunting him.
His friend Moss is unexpectedly released from prison, but there are conditions. Will Moss adhere to those conditions to save his own life, and what will it mean for Audie?
The tension is nerve wracking in this book that isn't just an 'on the run' thriller. It is so much more. It is a story of greed and corruption, of love and loyalty.
The final third kept me up reading through the night as Audie's past and present collide in a thrilling and nail biting crescendo.

Expectations. They can be dashed to smithereens by one poor decision. Audie Spencer Palmer, with only one day left of his 10 year prison sentence, escapes under the cover of night. Makes no sense, does it? Oh, but Audie has his reasons. And he has a plan. Tuck into this thriller after you have done your chores, as you will not want to roust yourself after you start reading. Terrific characters and a great story!

That was so,so good that I had trouble putting it down even for a moment. Audi is such an intriguing and likeable main character and I really wanted things to turn out well for him whilst being unable to see any way in which they could. The suspense is wonderful throughout the book and even when I figured out who was who and what had happened I still could not work out how it would end. When I was almost at the end I actually put the book away for an hour because I was so anxious about the ending I was beginning to speed read and was therefore not enjoying the story fully. This is truly an excellent book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre. I have no difficulty giving it five full stars.

What can I say about Michael Robotham an outstanding author who takes you on a thrill ride that you can't get off. I love Robotham none of his books have let me down yet , I love the way he takes you on a journey on the dark side.

Whilst the authorities were desperate to find Audie Palmer, Audie was busy with trying to preserve the life of an innocent person, but could Audie do that as well as stay one step ahead of the authorities?
What a fabulous, fabulous book. This is only my second book I've read by Aussie author Michael Robotham and I can't wait to get my hands on his other books. With twist and turns that had me turning the pages rather quickly wanting to know what would happen next. Highly recommended.

Brilliant!
I loved this book and struggled to put it down to the extent that I was nearly late for work a couple of times.
Life or Death is more complex than other thrillers I have read, and doesn’t rely on gore or shock value. Moreover, it is a masterful piece of storytelling, almost literary in style, where the plot gradually unravels and the characters develop to give the answer to one overarching question: why does Audie Palmer escape prison the day before being released from a ten year stretch?
I found this book engrossing from beginning to end, and despite it being only my second read from Michael Robotham, he is fast becoming a favourite author of mine.
For readers who want fast-paced action and spoon-fed answers as the story progresses, this likely will not suit. But for those who love to be shown rather than told, that like to feel a character rather than have them explained, that have a love of language, like “The moon is blooming overhead, pregnant and white, creating a silver path on the surface of the lake”, I high highly recommend this book.

Palmer survived beatings, stabbings, extortion, threats, and repeated brutal attempts to pound him into revealing the location of that missing booty. Now, on the day before his release, he’s gone! And that makes him an automatic felon subject to being tossed back in the slammer for another five plus years. Why in the world would he do that?
The game is afoot and the chase to recover Palmer and the missing money is on. The chase, the action, exceptionally well-developed characters and their various motivations make for some solid, enjoyable, high-speed, tantalizing thriller genre reading.
An easy recommendation for fans of the thriller genre.

I am a big fan of Michael Robthom he never fails to entertain but this just blew my socks off. The main character is Audie Palmer who decides to escape from prison one day before his due release date. Why would anybody of sane mind do such a thing? Audie is just one of those characters that you warm to and you will find yourself praying for his success.
He has been in prison for eleven years after being found guilty of some really horrific crimes, one being the killing of a young woman at the scene of $7,000,000.00 robbery.
So, with only one day to go, why would Audie choose now to escape?
As the story unfolds we get bigger and bigger insights into Audie’s past. Insights into the injustices placed at Audie’s feet.
But as Audie fights to save, not only his own life, but the life of someone who doesn’t even know Audie. There is a cartel that is desperate to see that Audie never opens his mouth, ever again.
This is a page turner of the first magnitude. There are characters here, like Audie, that you would die for and there are some that you would willingly put a gun to their head and blow their brains out. Yes I know, it’s only a story but this book will do this to you.

The incredible twists and turns were breathtaking – at one stage I gasped and said “Oh no, no!” out aloud! As I neared the finish I had to stop reading as I didn’t want to know what happened, then I had to start again immediately as I DID want to know! Life or Death is an astounding, past paced and gritty psychological thriller that I have no hesitation in recommending extremely highly.

Audie Campbell escapes from prison on the eve of his release after having served ten years behind bars. What follows next is his odyssey to an ultimate goal where only he is privy to knowing.
The story juxtaposes the past and present in a fairly unique way. It's delivered more topically than chronologically, making it more difficult to follow but tons more interesting. There were many questions to be answered and having them revealed strategically served the story very well.
I enjoyed the story and was often pretty tense as Audie faced some brutal situations and people. I also liked that some of the heroes were unconventional and while it wasn't the ending I was expecting, it still was satisfying. The narrator was outstanding, bringing a well written story to life with perfect timing and outstanding character distinction.

Michael Robotham is a terrific writer of suspense crime novels and this latest stand alone novel does not disappoint.
The main character, Audie Palmer has survived 10 years of harsh prison treatment for his role in an armed robbery involving the death of four people but inexplicably escapes 24h before his release. At first the FBI wonder if he is out to find the missing money (seven million dollars) or out for revenge or maybe he has an alternative reason that he has never mentioned to anyone? Audie Palmer is a great character, very likeable, smart and in control, he thinks things through and sticks to his own code of honor and I found myself on his side even though he is a convicted felon. The tension starts off high with Audie on the run and is turned up even higher through the many twists and turns of the novel as Audie fights to achieve his goal.

I was quite looking forward to reading this one, though unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. I have read three other novels by Michael Robotham and enjoyed them. This one just didn't really work for me. I found it a bit slow and difficult to get into. It wasn't until the last couple of chapters that I found myself really engaged with the book and actually enjoying reading it. The ending did keep me in suspense and I was very satisfied with how it ended. It's just a shame it took me right until the end to really get hooked. There was a big focus on a love story throughout the novel. I'm not really a romantic person, so I think this may have contributed to my lack of enjoyment and interest. I did like the main character, Audie Palmer, and I did want the best for him and felt some level of sympathy for how his life turned out. I think overall I just found the story a bit convoluted at times. It was ok, but not the best Michael Robotham book I have read. I realise I am in the minority with my thoughts and rating of this one. It even won the CWA Gold Dagger.. I must be missing something!

Listened. John Chancer was pretty good, although when he narrated any of the dum suthern hicks, he went a little whole hog and the characters sounded too cliche.
Throughout this book I had to keep checking my phone--did THE Michael Robotham really write a book set in TEXAS, of all places? THE M. Robotham whose Cyrus Haven series I consider one of the best set of books I've read in years?
Why Texas? Why America? Could Audie's story not have been told in England? Or, are all of Robotham's early books set in the United States? I mean, what do I know? Lemme go see....OK so the Joseph O'Loughlin series (next up for me) is set in London. As for others, I have no idea.
Back to this book. I loved it. The story was heartbreaking. And violent. And intensely gripping. Audie, like Cyrus after him, was yet another broken, lovable character. Dang, but this author knows how to create flawed leading men you want to root for.
The only time the mood was broken was when Robotham mistakenly inserted some Anglo-isms into the story:
1) someone's plan "goes pear-shaped." You'd never ever hear that on US soil.
2) someone "loses the plot;" another pure Britishism.
Other than those two gaffes, this book was a winner. This guy -- he's got the goods, he does.

Outstanding, brilliant.
Indeed, why would a man about to be paroled escape from prison on the eve of his release? Audi Spencer Palmer was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his part in an armed robbery of a truck carrying $7 million in unmarked bills. Four people died in the course of the robbery and Audie himself was grievously injured and not expected to survive. The money was never recovered. Audi pleaded guilty and never gave his version of events or dobbed in anyone else. Yet Audie had an amazing equanimity about him. He didn't rail against the unfairness of life, he just dealt with each day as it came.
The story follows Audie after his escape, his road is long and twisty and tortuous. He had a plan but it is starting to unravel. He had a promise to keep but is not sure he will be able to keep it, or even keep his life as the forces arrayed against gather in number and intensity.
This is an entirely stand alone novel. Audie's character is brilliantly drawn, you can't help liking him while at the same time wondering if and how he will survive his quest. Although fiction, this story is about the triumph of the human spirit in adversity. The minor characters form a brilliant supporting cast in one of Robotham's best ever books to date. I just loved it.

4.5 stars. This was an excellent thriller! I read it because Stephen King enjoyed it and I belong to a group who follows his recommendations.

This is the story of one Audie Palmer. I really can't say too much about the actual story without spoiling it for you and then you won't be 'thrilled' by how the events pan out.
I started with no knowledge and the basic premise of the book that is in the blurb: why would anyone want to escape from prison the day before his release? This intriguing question is all you need to get started!
The book is a little slow in the middle which is why it just misses 5 stars but as the story begins to come into focus, you'll realise the story is pretty poignant.
I've never read anything by this author before but I will definitely be back for more! Give it a go!

Another excellent novel by one of my favourite authors Michael Robotham. The opening features a man who escapes from prison the day before he is to be released, why? This novel is well constructed and full of some really good characters, there are twists and turns and plenty of action. What more could you ask for. I am quickly running out of Michael Robotham books to read, in fact there is only one to go. An excellent writer who deserves more recognition.

US March 2015, whichever part of the world you may be from, and release you are reading. For sure, I want a front-row seat when the film releases, as can only imagine the cast!

LIFE OR DEATH opens with the escape of Audie Palmer, from prison on the day before he is due to be released. Palmer has served the last 10 years in prison, a third of his life, for the Texas robbery of an armored truck. Four people were killed, and the $7 million dollars stolen in the robbery has never been recovered. During his prison term, Audie has been beaten, stabbed, poisoned, tortured; however, he has not talked, asked for protection, remaining cool and calm.
Palmer is smart, and is on the run. There are bad guys, crooked cops, and feds all trying to track him down to lead them to the money or kill him. However, he is not after any money – he has spent ten years in prison, and now is out to save and protect life. However, what person can be trusted?
Audie wasn't meant to end up in prison. He was a good kid, smart in school and college; however, his one weakness was his love for his no-good brother, Carl and he winds up behind bars. Audie touches so many lives and is connected with many characters we meet in, and out of prison. The connection between him and Moss, another inmate is powerful, and the author uses wit and humor combined with deep emotions of the heart and human dynamics, making the novel appeal to a wide variety of readers, outside the typical psychological, crime thriller genre.
Robotham keeps you on the edge-of-your seat, with twists, turns, dangers, suspense, and intensity, skillfully integrating flashbacks of Palmer’s life before prison, and the truth about the day of the robbery, all ignite as it nears its gripping and powerful conclusion.
LIFE OR DEATH is the best mix of my favorite male authors: Greg Iles, Paul Cleave, John Grisham, Harlan Coben, Dean Koontz, Michael Connelly, and David Baldacci, all rolled into one riveting novel. A suspenseful, fast-paced heart-pounding, page-turner, leaving you turning into the wee hours of the morning, and characters which will linger, long after the book ends...
I listened to the audiobook, and John Chancer, was outstanding-- with a wide variety of voices, perfectly matched for all the southern characters. Would highly recommend the audiobook as exceptional; however, there were so many beautiful words, you may want to buy the e-book as well.
From literary, psychological, crime, mystery, thriller, suspense; conspiracy, drama, murder, racial and social injustices; love and loss—A tour de force of crime writing, far exceeding the hype, well-deserving of 10 stars. Anything less would seem inadequate when attempting to describe the exceptional writing, the multi-layered plot, and the superbly developed characters; crafted with skillful precision and depth, grabbing you from the first page to the last.
Yes, Michael Robotham, you were truly destined to write this inspiring book. You have a gift. Thank you for sharing it with the world. You are welcome in the US anytime! Possibly Atlanta, or Florida next?

I have been a huge fan of Michael Robotham since I stumbled upon The Other Wife, his latest book in the Joe O'Loughlin series. I went on to read that whole series as well his newest series with Cyrus Haven and I loved them all. In 2021 I plan to finish his collection and read his stand alone novels. This is my first book on the quest.
Audie has been in prison for 10 years for a robbery gone very wrong including multiple deaths, some innocent some not. The day before he was due to be released, he escapes. A search party like no other ensues, and at the center is Desiree, a tough, sharp as nails crime fighter. The story alternates between present tense and past, including Audie's earlier life and the events leading up to the robbery and Audie's arrest.
Michael Robotham has done a great job with the story, but I wish he would have gone a bit deeper on some of the characters. Desiree would have made a great character for a series.
I found 2 great quotes in this book:

This was a new author for me, and wow- I'm glad I got read this novel.
Life or Death introduces us to Audie Palmer. Audie has been sentenced to ten years in prison for his putative participation in a 7-mil armored truck heist. The day before he is set to be released - Audie breaks out of prison- and now the mystery begins. WHY on earth would you break out of prison when you will be released the next day?!
Much of this book goes to the back story of where Audie grew up, his family, his brother and then meeting the 'true' love of his life. We also learn how very difficult it was for Audie to be in prison - for everyone believes that he has or know who has the 7 million dollars that was stolen .
The book held my interest and it did keep you guessing throughout. A nice read for sure and I'm looking forward to reading more of this author !

Мисля, че кратката анотация, която е към книгата дава доста добра представа за сюжета й.
Лично да си призная, спряла съм да чета сюжета написан на гърба на книгите, за да се изненадам и да не се опитвам да гадая, как ще се развият нещата. Стига ми да знам жанра, в която е. Някак ми е по-приятно, но може и да звучи глупаво.
Много обичам от малка да чета криминалета и трилъри. Един от проблемите беше, че рядко можех да попадна на точната книга за мен от тези жанрове.
Официално мога да кажа, че Майкъл Роуботъм успя да ме спечели.
