This story was interesting. The Native American shifting aspect of it was unique and it will be really interesting to read more about it in the next installment. Yup, you read that right - this story ended on a large cliffhanger, with no warning. *sad face*

The writing and author's voice in the beginning of this story was very strong and well done. I loved the beginning.

And though I've never spoken a hello to him; I find myself never wanting to say good-bye

The first few chapters were excellent. I thought "This is going to be a really good, slower paced, UST story about a man standing sentinel over this young family. I can really get into this." But when everything came to fruition with these two men, and they finally meet, it went from 0 to 60 in 48 hours flat. Within 48 hours Bennett had moved in and they were exchanging I love yous and plans of forever. It was jarring. I understand that this is most likely due to time restraints while writing this story.

I sincerely hope that during the expansion and re-vision that the author makes to this story/series, that they slow the relationship down. I have no doubts that this series can be a great one if Floyd nurtures their relationship. It will make the bond between Bennett and Trent more believable when the shit hits the fan. Rushing the middle to ending did a disservice to the story and caused the writing to seem unpolished.

I'm really interested in reading what happens next, and I'm excited to see what this author puts out in the future because I have a feeling they are someone to watch out for.

Thanks to the author for their time and participation in the Loves Landscapes event.

I didn't had problems with the cliffhanger end or the instant-love but plot inconsistency

So yeah.... Unfortunately I could not enjoy the story because of what I said inside the spoiler.

I usually avoid books with kids in them because they're really not for me. But this one sounded kind of interesting, so I went into it with an open mind, and I have to say, I was impressed. The kids didn't annoy me and I actually found them really cute in this. My only complaint with this is the pacing and overall length, though this is turning into a series, so that isn't a massive issue either.

Bennett and Trent were definitely a nice couple in this, but they moved a little too fast. But I've kind of started expecting that from paranormal/shifter books at this point.

Oh, and Brody and Jules were just too cute. That was definitely a really cute scene.

Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group's Love's Landscapes event. Thank you too all the amazing authors who participated!

Cliffhanger ending, so I may wait for the next installment to be out... aaand, I forgot. Picked this off my Nook forgetting this little warning to myself. Honestly, it was gonna be a 2.5 anyway although I would have rounded up. It started off great, I really liked Bennett and the voice was interesting.

"I watched him from the tree outside his window. I wasn't close enough to feel his skin or hear his breath. I wasn't close enough to see the brilliant shades of green in his eyes. I wasn't close enough to smell the day upon his skin. Yet, from the oak outside his window, and even in the darkness of the night that fell over its branches, I recognized the same expression on his face that told me he, too, longed for the solace of a body. And I only wished it was mine."

This beginning is so deep and dark and sad and beautiful, it held such promise. But things went downhill into typical romance trope-ville when Trent's POV is introduced. Trent was such a typical 'romance' cheese-ball, perving on Bennetts ass in tight jeans, trying to hide his obvious arousal at said ass, and purposely showing off his pecs. Lines like this really lost me,

"Have a good day at work, my Prince."
"If I'm your Prince then you're my knight."
Gag.

And after knowing this man for two days Trent invites him to move in with him! I could forgive that if he didn't have two small children! I think any parent would scoff at this.

It just got more and more cheesy and unrealistic as things went on. Then to have no resolution whatsoever of the overlying dramatic plot with the brother. Just, no.

P.S. And Trent joked about the kids playing "cowboys and Indians"... to his Native American friend. Yeah, there's some cultural sensitivity for ya. Not to mention "he wanted to rip the blue satin boxers off of Bennett's brown body"... Brown? Really? Was it just me, or does this just read weird?

P.P.S. The ages of the boys in the story doesn't match up with the picture. Just sayin.

Something about the writing in the beginning feels really forced. I don't know if it actually is that way or if it just seemed that way to me when I read it because I was feeling ornery. But still. It seemed forced, so maybe that says something. Also, the comma after the "But" in the first paragraph bothered me.

Eh, I dunno, the beginning does nothing for me. It's like the narrator's trying to go all Tell-Tale Heart, but it falls flat because then the narrator gets these attacks of self-consciousness and tries to disclaim. Probably why it comes off as just sad and melodramatic in a "trying too hard" sort of way :/

It's especially sad because the author/character spends the entire first page trying to explain why he's not a creep, but by the first break, I'm looking exaggeratedly askance at the screen.

And then there's more awk punctuation. Why a semi-colon there? The second part's not a complete sentence. A comma is perfectly fine. And why a comma after "though"? That's disruptive, like the comma after the "but" earlier. But eh, the last sentence in chap 1's got me intrigued where the previous however many failed to, so *shrug*...

Idk, there are all these appeals to pathos that fall flat for me. They're a bit too obvious for me, and I hate it when it's clear that I'm being told to feel a certain way about a thing so I don't, but YMMV. I'll refrain from making elitist comments about normals here, and by refrain, I mean praeteritio

...except by the time chap 4 rolled around I'd had enough. You know what; I'm still sad about what happened between Cameron and Chase in season 6 and there's only so much sanctimonious bullcrap I can stand. I just don't feel it at all. It relies heavily on pathos masquerading as logos that I just don't buy. Nice try, but you ain't Tell-Tell Heart.

Well, first off...My review is (a little) biased as this is my *brother's* first published work. I am one proud sister right now! But, with that being said I am going to review it as honestly as possible (this is also my first review on GR as well)... Here goes....
I was blown away by his writing style. In particular, how C. Dallas Floyd was able to switch gears with the characters yet it flowed so nicely. The plot was fast-paced and the characters had enough depth to keep me intrigued. I had never read an MMRomance story before so that was a first which also gave it a fun little spin for me. I'm a lover of all supernatural mysteries so the Native American shifter aspect was right up my alley but I enjoyed there was some real-world plight to it as well. I was actually MAD it was over BUT, I know he's working on more installments and I will be able to read/review them as he delves farther into Knight Owl series (and maybe throw in my two cents as well)
All in all, it has the makings of a fabulous romance mystery series, it was a powerful introduction to the world C. Dallas Floyd created, and I am ready to read more! NOW!
On a personal note---I am insanely proud that he was able to write this story as well as he did. It blew me away actually. Chris has worked so hard on this story and to see it out in the world makes me a little flabbergasted but so very proud. It takes a lot of talent, dedication, and guts to put your art into the world...especially on a forum like this where people actually review you so openly! It was also really neat/kinda scary to see the cover art I made for it too. I know for a fact C.D.F. has many more stories up his sleeve and a few that he is working on currently and I will be here to cheer him on through them all!
Good Luck my brother on all your future endeavors and always strive to make more art!

I hate you cliff-hangers. *scowl*

The beginning of this started off strong and appropriately dark and desolate.

Then it turned...weird.

Still, in general I liked the writing and the story, though the cliff-hanger...*growls*

I do want to see what happens next.

Warning - this is not a complete story and finishes on a huge cliff hanger.

Interesting paranormal story of Trent, who has moved to a new house with his dead sister's two sons, intent on getting over her murder and raising the kids. Bennett is a Native American shifter - but not a single form shifter, his preferred form appears to be that of an owl, and it's while shifted that he watches Trent and his family. Feeling a connection he introduces himself and the pair begin a tenative relationship. Only Bennett's brother, an out of control shifter, wants Bennett back in the family fold and appears to be going to any lengths to get him.

I added a new shelf because of this story: 'Cliffhanger'. Because that is what we get.

This is a very fast paced romance, but because there is a shifter involved, I see it working. Bennett is a shifter who has ran from his pack and Alpha(his brother). His ex-pack are murders and evil. He doesn’t want that type of life, so he left them in search of something better. That comes in the form of a single father named Trent.

Just as things start to unravel, it just ends…I really hope it will be continued.

I enjoyed this story, and I really liked the author's writing style. It's somewhat... poetical? Not sure if that's the right word, but that's the best way I can describe it. :)

It's a good start to what will be a longer story, but I do wish the author had slowed the pace down a little bit, and taken the time to flesh it out some more. There's also some very fast insta-love going on, which I'm normally not a big fan of. Although, that tends to go hand-in-hand with shifter stories, so not really a big deal for me in this case. And some of the dialogue towards the end was a bit too sappy/sweet for my tastes, but again, not so bad that it ruined my enjoyment.

However, I did have some serious issues with a couple of things: the moving in together and the sex scene. Unless I missed something, these two characters have only known each other for a few days? And yet Trent invites Bennett (who is essentially a stranger - these two know practically nothing about each other) to move in with him? That's... not very bright. But to do something like that when you have small children in the home? Wow... that's just 10 kinds of stupid, irresponsible, and downright scary. Same thing with the sex scene. It's pretty safe to assume that shifters can't catch or transmit STDs, but at this point in the story, Trent does NOT know that Bennett is a shifter, and yet he doesn't even blink at having unprotected sex with him? Ack! WTF?!

I really wish the author had handled those two aspects of the story differently, because it makes it really hard to like characters who make such horribly bad/dangerous decisions like that... :(

But despite that, there was more to this story that I DID love, so those two issues didn't completely ruin it for me. And I was getting really anxious towards the end, wondering how the hell all of this was going to be wrapped up in just a few more pages. Then we get a scene where the shit is about to hit the fan, and suddenly... cut to black.

What?! Noooo! Holy mother of cliffhangers! No he did not! Well, yes, yes he did. LOL! :P So yeah, be warned. This is not a full/stand-alone story, and the cliffhanger is a real nail-biter.

So, overall... a pretty solid read, especially for a debut story! I'm really looking forward to reading the continuation. Hope it'll be out soon! :)

I liked the way it started but things just started to move way too fast. After just one meeting Bennett is moving in with Trent.....instant family. There was no build up and no angst in their relationship development; it just happened. And then the author ups the ante with Bennett's violent brother Guy. There's far more to this story but it literally just ends with "to be continued." Well considering it has been three years since the author produced this, and nothing since, I'm guessing there really isn't a completion coming. I say "completion" vice "sequel" because this work is unfinshed. Sequels build on completed stories, this does not. Shame. If I had known that I wouldn't have bothered.

I had a hard time deciding between 2 or 3 stars and finally decided on 2 as I liked the story, but it just didn't do much for me. The beginning was really strong and I thought it was going to be really good, but the 2nd half of the book was almost as if it were written by a different person. This story was way too rushed and I just had a hard time keeping up. This does have the potential to be a great book if made into a series as I especially hate cliffhangers.

Let me just say what da omg cliffhanger yep
Don't read if you don't want to. I dove right in it not knowing it had a cliffhanger . I just loved this so much Bennett is a lonely shifter man who can shift into many I think. Meet Trent with 2 kids who's sister has passed away with uneventful events. He has 2 nephews he just adores. Bennett just wants a family to belong. Can they make things work.

I can NOT wait until the full-length novel inspired by this novella is complete! I love my descriptive books, but sometimes it's nice to be able to just sit back and complete a story in one sitting and THIS right here was a great escape from reality. C. Dallas Floyd, thank you!

Cliffhanger. Unusual shifter story. There's a big detail that goes unexplained and still bothers me: .
