So Larissa didn't get the part? Big deal. So she's failing English and math and maybe Spanish--who cares? She's having fun. She's got a life. School's not the most important thing in the world.
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
One of the Sweet Valley Jr. High series, this one deals with the difficulty young teens have with balancing their academic and social lives. Larissa's problem is developed and resolved as we rotate through a variety of character perspectives.
Predictable patterns can help some readers gain confidence as they practice reading comfortably predictable material. Because the teen characters' feelings and problems are respected and basic values are maintained, these books make for wholesome, light reading that can counterbalance more meaningful, artistic literature.
3.5 rounded up to 3. Very good for a Sweet Valley Jr. High book. Jr. High is definitely my favourite series in the Sweet Valley universe. I love reading from Larissa’s perspective, she’s relatable as someone who also dealt with undiagnosed ADHD as a kid and teen. Anna wasn’t annoying here, which is a first.
