Extraordinary book! Very torough investigation of the Bible chronology, supported by many facts and logical explanations! I'm impressed! Strongly reccommend!
This is an outstanding book for researching Biblical history. Dr Jones has done a tremendous job of research to help novices like me gain a much better understanding how the Old Testament unfolds historically and in chronological order. I've been working on a personal project of Read the Bible in a Year in Chronological Order and started with F LeGard Smith's work and still had some questions, but Dr Jones helped clear up a lot of those questions. I actually had been reading James Ussher's The Annals of the World which is an amazing book, especially since it was written back around 1650. As I dug deeper into Ussher, I was reading some commentary and came across Dr Jones. All 3 of these books are exciting stuff for a lay person like me and it really helps to gain a much better understanding of Scripture.
Dr. Floyd Jones has a passion for Bible Chronology. What I appreciate the most is that he totally shows respect for the classic Chronologers of the past (Ussher, Anstey, et. al.). No disrespect towards those he disagrees with. He attempts to demonstrate flaws of other argumentations while maintaining a solid commitment to the Biblical texts (Hebrew Masoretic Text and the Greek New Testament - Textus Receptus). Dr. Jones does not veer to far from the established Bible Chronologers who share the same commitments to the Biblical text. His book is almost an explanation of the six charts that are the out workings and illustrations of his Bible Chronology. Certainly this is a fascinating read!
Excellent chronology of the Old Testament. VERY thoroughly researched, as well as faithful to the Bible itself. He highly values Ussher's monumental work.
It is amazing what light a systematic study of Bible chronology can shed on its pages. For example, did you know that Jonathan was almost 30 years older than David?! Or that Samson and Samuel lived at the same time? There are innumerable other interesting facts revealed.
He also deals with the many apparent contradictions and troublesome passages one encounters, especially in the chronology of the kings of Judah and Israel. His answers are nearly always very plausible, besides being faithful to the text. His information on the Jewish method of reckoning years is fascinating.
I'm currently lacking about 100 pages of finishing. It isn't quick reading, but once one gets used to his style it is neither difficult to understand nor boring. He doesn't know how to use his prepositions very well, but he gets the point across. :) I found a few errors, but what book written by man doesn't have some? None of them are too serious.
As far as I'm concerned, this sets the standard for a chronology of the Bible. I'll refer back to it frequently in the future, I'm quite certain. Some Bible colleges have also begun using it.
