This novel is the most unique style of book that I have ever read and I absolutely enjoyed it from start to finish! We, the readers, are spoken to in the manner of the sleuthing detective with the alibi of being the person in charge of taking inventory of Adelaide's belongings after her sudden death. As the story develops, puzzles are found within the manor that must be solved in order to reveal secrets of Adelaide's life prior to her death and possible motives of the suspects that attended her last party.

If you enjoy interactive games like Clue, Hidden Objects, the older Nancy Drew games, etc. but would love to have that within a plot that you can read, I would definitely recommend this book! Each puzzle you solve leads to a new twist in the story and it had me gasping out loud at some of the realizations. I loved the snippets of the past that gave us background on each suspect and that the book alludes to a possible primary suspect, but that it can also be up for speculation depending on how you viewed it or solved it. The start of the book mentions using this for a fun interactive party game and I think it would definitely be fun to do that with.

The puzzles aren't too difficult to solve as they mostly draw information from the illustrations and clues from ones you solve earlier in the book. There were only a few puzzles I struggled with which made the associated twists in the story have less of an impact on me. One involved Roman Numerals which I will admit I do not know at all, so that is my fault. The other two mentioned following a specific code that I couldn't really figure out nor did the clues in the back of the book help me at all, so I just resorted to the solution section for the answers.

My reasoning for it not being a 5-star read is just because the book seemed a bit short in terms of the actual plot and writing compared to the amount of puzzles in it, and a few of the puzzles didn't really aid in the story so they seemed unnecessary? The main character (the reader) is also said to be drinking often which took me out of the book as I do not drink alcoholic beverages that frequently.

I read this as an ARC on Netgalley and I greatly appreciate the chance for that! It was my entire honest review though.

Are you ready to solve a mystery? The answer better be yes, because Peril at Quandary Park by Stephanie von Reiswitz throws you straight into a murder-mystery puzzle hunt where you, yes YOU, are the detective.

Now, let's start with the book cover because that is some exquisite art. It has so much going on (in a good way!), and it makes sense for the book because it's set on an English country estate. It has the murder mystery aspect while looking so professional that I'm surprised it's not already in stores. So one thing you do not have to be worried about is the design of the book.

Your mission (if you choose to accept it) is to solve the murder of Adelaide Hatchett, who was found dead at her annual summer soirée. Piece together puzzles, decode clues, interrogate the quirky cast of party-guests-turned-suspects, and solve this murder!

Be prepared for lots of reading, because since this is an investigation, you need to take on the role of detective. You’ll be note-taking, cross-referencing, and squinting at illustrations like a detective in a TV drama. Luckily, there’s a reference page so you won’t confuse your scandalous socialites with your cranky botanists.

The puzzles are clever, the art is stunning, and the characters are quirky enough to keep you entertained while you piece everything together. And you might think, ‘It’s just one book, how long can it take?’ Ha. Joke’s on you. Between the reading, the note-taking, and the puzzle-solving, this one’s a time commitment. So do yourself a favor and block out some time to play detective properly.

I'd give this book a 4.5 out of 5 teapots. It’s fascinating to step into the investigator role, but fair warning, there’s a lot of reading packed in here, and a bigger font would’ve made the sleuthing a bit easier on the eyes. Still, this interactive murder mystery is a gem for gift-givers seeking mystery-themed presents, escape room players, and fans of Stephanie von Reiswitz's Murder Most Puzzling series. Grab your notebook... you’re officially on the case!

This is very clever - I love puzzles and reader-involved mysteries.

Some of the puzzles were very difficult to solve (I still don't understand the medicine cabinet bottles one) but the others were fun. I much prefer visual puzzles (like the stair/statue one) to solving word puzzles (like the coded letters.) There are both clues and solutions at the back if you don't want to stall out. It might also be easier to examine the photos if you have a larger image to look at (and the images are beautiful). The cast of characters is clever and the whodunnit is fun to figure out even if puzzles aren't your thing or you're not patient enough.

Get your pen and paper ready, because this is a mystery with many a conundrum to puzzle out. I was hesitant at first to read this book having recently been disappointed in Maureen Johnson's efforts to create a caper worthy of a cunning detective, but this book is on an entirely different level. Stephanie von Reiswitz creates a cozy yet Gorey-esque world where you have to solve many puzzles in order to find out who killed three, but more likely four, victims. What I particularly liked was that there were so many different deductive games, some of them real corkers, hence have that pen and paper ready. But there are clues on how to solve the conundrums as well as the answers in the back for those who are worried they might not be up to the task. So while I was occasionally stymied by one or two of the puzzles I was suitably impressed with the level of skill it took to create them. The art was just the right level of macabre watercolor and the crimes were pitch perfect. A true gift for those who fancy themselves sleuths, unlike that new Maureen Johnson book. Seriously, that book bored me to tears.

Adelaide Hatchett has died. A heart attack. At a summer party. In her own greenhouse with all of the doors and windows locked. That's probably not a surprise as she was an older woman. However, Betrand Hellebore thinks there's something more to it. He and Adelaide weren't on great terms as he had been hired to make possets and potions specifically for her from the plants in her greenhouse. He left the house with hard feelings but doesn't believe he could have been disinherited. Adelaide must have been murdered.
The reader normally wouldn't take on a case like this but in a Wolfe-esque manner, we have to work in order to keep ourselves in the style to which we've become accustomed.
We are introduced to the people who were at her last party and given reasons why they might have wanted to kill her. There are puzzles on almost every page and they vary in easiness from medium to hard. Of the books that I've read like this lately, this was the best executed. Highly recommend getting in hard copy as it can be difficult to read and enjoy on an e-reader and would be very hard on a phone.

I recieved an ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books. I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.

I immensely enjoyed the hands-on aspect of this book. It was fun to solve a murder and have a much of chances to find out the information, as well as solve a variety of puzzles. The artwork was stunning, too.

My biggest complaint was that I wish there was just a bit more story between the puzzles. It felt like there was just enough story to lead you to the next puzzle, but not enough to really immerse yourself.

Additionally, I read this digitally. I would not suggest other people to do that. It was nice to be able to zoom in on pictures, but flipping between pages was a bit of a pain and definitely made things harder.

3.5 rounded up to 4
Perilous at Quandary Park is a clever and visually striking puzzle-mystery. The gothic illustrations added a quirky vibe, and the mix of riddles, logic challenges, and story clues makes exploring the manor feel like a true whodunit experience.

Some of the puzzle solutions did feel like they required a bit of a leap, but I appreciated that the book doesn’t stall you out if you miss one, you can keep moving forward and still enjoy the overall mystery.

It’s fun, immersive, and beautifully put together, perfect for fans of interactive mysteries and puzzle-solving with a darkly playful twist.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this puzzle book.

I found this book somewhat disappointing. I was hoping for an engaging mystery where the reader actively pieces together clues to uncover who committed the crime. Instead, it felt more like a collection of standalone puzzles, many of which seemed disconnected or forced rather than integrated into a cohesive narrative. While the puzzles did relate to the overall plot, they often disrupted the flow of the story. I also had difficulty distinguishing which pages contained actual puzzles and which were meant purely for storytelling. This may have been exacerbated by reading the ebook version rather than a physical copy, but I can't say for certain.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Stephanie von Reiswitz for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Murder Most Puzzling Peril at Quandary Park coming out September 30, 2025. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I really enjoyed the short stories and pictures. I guess I wasn’t paying attention because I didn’t really pick up on the correlation between the stories and the pictures. It wasn’t very clear to me that they were related. I didn’t try to solve the murders. But I would check out other books by this author.

*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

This book was so much fun! I loved all the puzzles and the overall mystery. Each puzzle is different which kept the book fresh from beginning to end. Some were rather easy while others required more time/energy. I received this an e-book which made some of the puzzles more difficult because there was both a watermark on the page and I could not see all of the pictures at once (many of them take over two pages which in the printed book will most likely be presented right next to each other). I will definitely be going back to this author's other puzzle books to test out my puzzle-solving skills!

3 1/2 stars. Don't sit back and relax to enjoy this challenging mystery! In this interactive mystery and puzzle book you are the detective and have to solve puzzles to fill in parts of the story and solve the murder. This was fun and the illustrations were great. I didn't get all of the puzzles but there are both clues and solutions in the back if you get stuck. I wish the characters were a little bit more developed but overall very entertaining. If you want a more active role in a mystery this is right up your alley.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Murder Most Puzzling is like an adventure game in a book. Filled with illustrations to help solve the puzzles, interspersed with narrative text, the book is intriguing. Thankfully, there are clues and solutions to the puzzles at the end of the book. Much like a walkthrough for an adventure video game, I found I often needed these to help solve the puzzles. The story is short and a fun experience.

A delightful puzzle for the mystery fanatics who prefer clues over crosswords! The puzzles were simple but well designed, the artistry engaging, and overall a fun time. Next time I'll grab my notebook! Definitely recommend a physical copy. The perfect stocking stuffer as we approach the holidays!

My husband and I had fun doing a few puzzles every night before going to sleep for about two weeks. It was a fun activity to do after a long day caring for our kids and working.
It took us a couple of puzzles to understand that each heading started a new puzzle. It would have made sense to include some instructions somewhere.
My biggest pet peeve, and I haven’t seen anyone else comment this, was the writing. There was a lot of awkward/forced vocabulary.

I’m not going to rate it because it’s honestly more of a brain teaser book than a story, but it was a fun time overall. Some chapters took much more brainpower than others (I would argue unsolvable without the hints), and some weren’t even related to the murder so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was pretty much right in the end but let’s just say you don’t want to count on me to solve your future homocide cases.

This was a quick mystery and very interesting to solve. I enjoyed the hints page at the end which allows readers to go back and solve puzzles if they missed anything. If you do read this in e-book format, I would suggest zooming in as some of the puzzles are hard to see in normal view.

This is a follow up to the Murder Most Puzzling book and jigsaw puzzle previously published. In this edition, the artistic illustrations hold the clues to the mystery of a murdered heiress. The author recommends you work through the book front to back and take notes as you go. The setting is an estate in September, perfect for something cozy and relaxing as you solve this dastardly crime. Featured are character descriptions, a room by room layout in each chapter and a list of clues and evidence with solution at the end. No peeking!! This is a lovely bit of fun. I’m posting for review but look forward to working slowly through the mystery myself this autumn.
