Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Sweet Valley Slumber Party Elizabeth gets her sleeping bag out of the closet in preparation of their slumber party the next night. Even tho they had a camp-out, she’s still excited. Steven won’t even be around because he’ll be at their grandparents. Jessica decides to get her sleeping bag out too. They decide to sleep in their sleeping bags “to practice” Their mom comes in and apologizes she won’t be there. She and their father are going out of town on a business trip, but their Aunt Helen will be staying with them.
Liz asks if Alice will call. She’s a little nervous. Jessica says what if something happens she won’t know what to do. But Allice assures them she will and they’ll like her because she was her favorite aunt growing up. Then she arrives. She’s plump, has white hair, and wears glasses. She gets the twins right at first guess. She says she hasn’t seen them since they were babies, but clearly now they’re all grown up. Liz immediately starts to like her.
Saturday afternoon Lila, Ellen, Eva, and Amy arrive. They unpack everything in the den and meet Aunt Helen. Then she excuses herself and says if they need her to let her know. Lila shows them her new, purple, sleeping bag. Then they arrange their sleeping bags. Jessica says she’s sleeping next to Liz. Eva has her favorite stuffed horse (Arabella). Lila and Amy have identical stuffed unicorns. Lila says hers is brand new. So, hers is better. She got him at a very, nice, toy store. Amy says hers is almost brand new and she got it at the mall. Amy says hers name is Princess.
Lila gets pouty and tells Jessica Amy is spoiling everything. Jessica doesn’t see the big deal and tells her lets just have fun. Lila looks angry but then says she doesn’t care. Jessica is glad that drama’s out of the way and the party can go on. The girls start throwing their stuffed animals around. This leads to a big pillow fight and stuff goes flying. Liz rushes up the steps and into Aunt Helen who wants to know what all the noise is about and Liz explains and apologizes.
They chill with the fight and go upstairs. Lila goes into Mrs. Wakefield’s room and sees two dresses on the bed. They’re Mrs. Wakefield’s best party dresses. One was made of black velvet, another had blue sequins ontop, and a third had lace on the collar and cuffs. Lila immediately starts to try on the blue one. Liz says they have to be careful. Ellen starts for the black one. Eva tries on the other one. The others just watch. Then they start putting on Mrs. Wakefield’s lipstick. While they’re doing this, Lila rips Mrs. Wakefields dress-her favorite dress-.
Just then the phone rings. Aunt Helen calls for Liz and Jess and says it’s their mother. They tell her about the pillow fight. She tells them just don’t get to wild. She doesn’t want her house torn up. She says she’ll be home tomorrow. After they get off the phone they -the twins- agree they should have told her but then think maybe they can fix it. Aunt Helen comes upstairs. Lila starts to cry. Aunt Helen says she can fix it. That’s why they were out on the bed. She was going to cut the bottoms and make them shorter anyway but advises them not to play with such delicate things from now on.
They clean up their things and decide to stay in the den. Lila and Amy start to fight over a unicorn. Lila says its hers. They look for the other one. Liz thinks the party is surely ruined. They go to ask Aunt Helen. She says they’ll search the house. In the meanwhile, she takes the unicorn from Amy and says she’ll hold on to it so they won’t fight. They look all over for it but can’t find it. Aunt Helen says they can order pizza for dinner. Jessica pulls Lila to the side and asks if she hide Amy’s unicorn because she didn’t want her to have the same toy. Lila insist that no. Amy lost it. She wouldn’t do something like that. Jessica isn’t sure.
Aunt Helen sees all the long faces and says she knows where the missing unicorn is. Aunt Helen says they’ll have a scavenger hunt and they’ll divide into two teams.
Jessica, Lila, and Ellen want to be on a team but Aunt Helen says Liz, Lila, and Eva will be on a team. Amy, Jessica, and Ellen will be on the other. She tells that the winning team will pick where they go for dessert. The clue is what can lean but not fall over. This is where the missing doll will be. Liz guesses the rocking chair in her room, but it’s not there. Liz has another thought but here’s the others coming.
They all decide they need another clue. Aunt Helen tells them to write down these words -and the order is important- Reading, Enjoying, Cozy, Lounging, Inside, Napping, Easy, Relaxin. Amy figures out the first letters in each word spell out RECLINER. The unicorn is behind the recliner. They each take one. It no longer matters which is which. They decide to go to the ice-cream parlor. The unicorns also come along,
That night, Jessica says she wants to stay up all night. Lila says then she’ll sleep all day tomorrow. Amy says she can’t sleep all day tomorrow because her mom’s taking her to shop for a Halloween costume. Ellen says she wants to be a mermaid. Lila says she doesn’t know what she’ll be but her dad says this year Halloween will be special. Jessica still wants to stay up and play guessing games but before she knows it she’s out cold.
The next morning, Aunt Helen makes waffles and the twins friends go home. The twins help their aunt fix the dresses. When their parents come home, their aunt promises to come back if their parents have to go out of town again.
My Thoughts: This is one of the ones I was missing and am glad I found. (I found some of the missing ones just recently for reviews I skipped). Its interesting how this kind of foreshadows that one day Amy will have more of the same interest of Lila’s than Liz’s. Also interestingly it kind of brought back memories of the only slumber party I remember going too that got kind of rowdy and pillows -and a lot more other things- started to get thrown around. Aunt Helen surprised me. She was actually cool and I thought she was going to be mean!

The twins are having a slumber party, but their parents are going away, so Great Aunt Helen comes to stay. Lila and Amy both have the same toy unicorn, and Lila isn’t impressed and is kind of bratty. They have a pillow fight, then go and try on a bunch of Alice’s dresses. Lila accidentally rips one, but Aunt Helen saves the day - she was going to hem them anyway! Then they discover one unicorn is missing - and the girls team up against each other. Not even pizza cheers them up. But Aunt Helen knows where the missing unicorn is and sends them on a scavenger hunt to find it. Then takes them for ice cream. She’s a pretty ‘great’ aunt! My rating - 5/10 - a little slow to start but actually sounded like a fun sleepover! Maybe because I’m dieting and pizza and ice cream sound amazing right now 🤤
I was expecting this to be all about the twins' Great Aunt Helen turning out to be super strict and ruining the slumber party, but instead it was about Lila and Amy having the same toy unicorn *gasp!* Mildly entertaining but not one of the best ones in the series.
