Samantha Duncan #2

The Jewels in the Crown

Rate this book
Oxford don Samantha Duncan may have retired from teaching, but she is busier than ever on the lecture circuit. Our protagonist is in rare form as she draws on her expertise of antique jewelry to unravel the mysterious disappearance of the Irish Crown Jewels more than a century earlier. When Samantha and her friend Annie buy some jewelry at a London auction they never imagine the secret it holds. But it is not until Samantha flies out to California to present a paper at Berkeley that she realizes what she and her friend may have stumbled across. But where did it come from? who has it now? and will the secret it's held for more than a century finally be told?
A missing jewelry box, a break-in at Annie's house and a camera shy villain all add to the intrigue as Samantha's powers of observation and quick thinking save the day. In this second book in the series we renew our acquaintance with Samantha's cousin Julie and her brother-in-law Rupert, and meet Annie, her friend and former colleague, and a variety of interesting characters from both sides of the Atlantic. As with her first mystery, Thurbin's second book is meticulously crafted and researched, and the story keeps the reader guessing right up until the final chapter.

Samantha Duncan mysteries

This series is proving reasonably entertaining so far.....,I like the idea of a retired academic using her expertise to track down art thefts (jewellery). I could do with a little more on the jewellery and a little less about fine dining in posh hotels, to be honest, and the proof - reading leaves a lot to be desired......It is St. James's PARK, not St. James's Place, and it's the YOKE of the bourgeoisie, not the YOLK. Still, an amusing bunch of characters, and I am looking forward to reading the next episode.

Samantha Duncan's books are interesting if you like to travel and look at art, but I could really not agree that they are mysteries. She always has a slight mystery but it is very tame and usually there is not much work involved in getting it solved. I like her main character because I love travelling and I like visiting museums. So I would say these books are more travel books than actual mysteries.

The Jewels in the Crown

I enjoyed it. It is a lot of fun to read a mystery without several or even one in the story. I like to read mysteries but this was a terrific change.
