This book is a biography about the life of Tom Sawyer. Readers quickly learn that Mark Twain's real name is actually Samuel and he was born in Missouri. Readers are then taken through a journey of Mark’s life, from childhood to death. We learn where his storytelling skills came from and where the inspiration for Tom Sawyer came from. Readers learn that Mark had to quickly help the family make money because of the death of his father when he was eleven. We learn about his life in his later years and how he learned to drive a steamboat and where he met his wife. We also learn how he started writing Tom Sawyer and the things he wrote before he actually wrote Tom Sawyer.

This book was kind of boring, it did not really tell the story of Mark’s life in a unique way, it was simply a biography. The pictures in the book were real pictures, not illustrations so that was cool to see. It was also interesting because his life was interesting, not because of the way it was told. It also was an easy read and had all the information you need to know about Mark without having too much information that you have to decipher through to get the important parts.

If a student needs or wants to learn about Mark Twain this is a good book to give them if they are anywhere between 3rd and 5th grade. I do not think they would get bored with the information because it is so short and to the point. I think that this book does a good job targeting young children and will help them learn about Mark Twain’s life without having to read a long chapter book about him. If an older classroom is reading Tom Sawyer it might be cool to start by reading this book to get a better understanding of who Mark Twain is without having to read a boring article.
