A lonely house all falling down; five homeless folk alone and cold. How can there be a happy end? Read on and see the tale unfold...a family of five house themselves, and live happily ever after. A full color tale for young kids..think Dr. Seuss squats a house. The Grinch never had it this bad.
I really wanted to like it, because it is so clearly an awesome idea - a bunch of homeless people move into a house together and work together to make it a home. Then they stand up to the police and resist the power. Plus, a Buffy action figure! What's not to like?
Sadly, what's not to like is everything from the storytelling (I didn't care about any of the characters and found both the conflict and resolution weak), to the rhymes, to the illustrations (photos of action figures COULD be cool, but this wasn't), to the layout. I won't give it one star because I reserve that for books that I loathe both in intention and execution, and this just failed on the latter front, but I wouldn't exactly recommend it.
I wish there were more books in this genre, and I would happily collect them all in order to promote them elsewhere. This is so sweet, and it's definitely great for young children. The flow is a bit wonky in the poetry (personally), but it's still got a great message.
Though, I think there needs to be a little more focus on people fighting to stay in their home, since that's exactly what happens when people are squatting. I also think that this could show a stronger community message, which would improve it greatly.
Aww, the cuteness! Photos of a Buffy action figure (Buffy), construction worker with one arm (Tariq), lego man (Jimmy), dollhouse action figure (Farah) and dog tell the story of 4 homeless, hungry friends who squat an abandoned building and fix it up (breaking some gender norms!); dumpster furniture and house goods; and stand up to the police by throwing a party. How awesome is that?!?!
