Super serious Asahi Suzumura and laidback, easygoing Mitsuki Sayama might seem like an odd couple, but they made a deal; they'll vacation around the world and when they get back to Japan, they'll get married. As they travel from country to country, the different people, cultures and cuisine they encounter begin to bring them closer together. After all they're not just learning about the world, but about themselves too.

A gay couple sets off on a round-the-world trip. Mitsuki is the outgoing and attractive one, while Asahi is reserved, organized, and closeted. In this opening leg of the journey across Asia they hit Thailand, India, and Georgia, sightseeing and eating lots of local dishes while meeting people new and familiar.

Aside from small day-to-day fluxes in their romantic relationship due to the challenges of travel, the only drama comes from vague hints about Asahi's health and the reason he is currently between jobs back in Japan. It's like the most subdued episode of "Amazing Race" ever.

Too dull for me.

This was really sweet.

I liked how this BL approached its storytelling. Most BL is all about the pining and the chasing and meet cute and start of an often times messy relationship.

This skips all of that and throws us into an already established relationship, albeit one not without it's issues and obstacles.

What I loved most is their experiences in each country and what they learn and and grow from those experiences.

There's repeated allusion to some sort of medical/health issue involving one of the MCs that I'm assuming will come into play in later volumes. I found this certainly intriguing and look forward to seeing how that unfolds.

The only downfall was that because of this relationship already being established we do miss out on any of the cute and exciting aspects to these types of stories. Instead you get a calmer, quieter, more slice of life approach to a BL. Not a huge detractor but it did slow the pace down a bit.

Lastly, and VERY nitpicky of me, the character art gets a little wonky from time to time. Normally, it wouldn't bother me, but for some reason these examples pulled me out of the reading experience a tad.

A very enjoyable manga to read. It really did feel like a travel guide. I loved the relationship between the main characters. They were polar opposites but fit perfectly together.

In this volume we follow Asahi and Mistsuki as they visit Thailand, India and Georgia. We get to learn so much about the cultures and poeple of these countries, just by reading this short manga. The author only highlighted the important facts but it still was really informative. Moreover, all those delicious foods from difficult countries- brought water in my mouth.

More thoughts will be shared on my Youtube channel! Subscribe to my channel!

I knew the moment I saw the cover and the first few pages that I will definitely love this manga, and I DID!!

This manga features a soft shy gay guy, Asahi, who worries a lot and wants everything organized, and a happy-go-lucky bisexual, Mitsuki, who adores Asahi unapologetically!

It follows the beginning of their journey around the world so the manga chapters are divided into trips: their journey to Thailand, India, and Georgia.

Not knowing much about how their relationship started, aside from a few frames that show their high school days, just adds a bit of mystery on what is to come in future volumes and I love that!

It also features one of my favorite tropes ever: oh-no-there's-only-one-bed!! Please, if you're looking for a manga that has A M A Z I N G art style and explores amazing culture around the world and a very wholesome-yet-chaotic gay relationship, I highly HIGHLY recommend this!

Our Not-So Lonely Planet Travel Guide releases on April 20, 2021! Check it out on Netgalley while it's still available for request!

3.5 stars!

Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide, Volume 1 is different than a lot of the manga I normally read, in that it follows an already established couple. Asahi and Mitsuki have decided to travel the world, and once they return to Japan they are going to get married. This first volume follows their trips to Thailand, India, and Georgia.

My favourite part was their trip to Thailand, mainly because of the side character we meet there. She was a great addition and I hope we get to meet her again.

I really enjoyed Asahi and Mitsuki's relationship for the most part. They have a grumpy/golden retriever dynamic going on that was adorable to read. I'm interested in learning more about their history and especially Asahi's health troubles.

The artwork is amazing here. The author did a great job bringing the different countries to life!

Enter hopelessly-in-love sunshine airhead and worried grump taking on Thailand, India, and Georgia one picture, meal and tourist activity at a time. Asahi is in his growth era while learning to come to terms with a public relationship and searching for a new job. Mitsuki is along for adventure while pushing Asahi to try new things and always being reassuring when he needs it. Both are stubborn but will do anything to make each other happy at the end of the day. This 'promise' of theirs will take awhile, but happy to be part of the bumpy, not-so-hassle-free ride as we go around the world meeting new and past people. I love these fools already and their quirky adorable selves.

Visually this manga is very appealing with the sights and food. It will give you 'fomo'. *Tip: do not read when hungry!

The little side notes and nods to certain things have me cracking up. I hope we get more flashbacks for the coming together of these two in future volumes. They gave me *butterflies* at certain moments! Grateful for the bonus chapter!

May we all have a "mai pen rai" attitude in this life!

Quotes (be mindful of *SPOILERS* in these):

"Treasure those feelings. You are you. Be proud of who you are."

"Gandhi said that you should live as if you're going to die tomorrow, and learn as if you will live forever. Death is nothing special. As long as you are alive, it will always be close by your side."

"I promise to be your side always."

"But, no matter what anyone says to me, you're the only one I want to be with. I'd proudly face even God himself to say that. Stop going in circles and realize how much I love you."

The story is gorgeous! Two people in love, wanting to travel the world before going home to marry each other, HOW CAN I NOT SWOON AT THE PREMISE ALONE?

I got so many butterflies reading their story, with their expressions and precious moments gorgeously drawn, while also learning little bits of knowledge about the countries they visited throughout their journey. Just a super enjoyable read!

I received this book from Netgalley/publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Confession-time, I hadn’t exactly read the blurb. I just saw the cover, read some key words like travel and closer together and that was it for me. So the whole romance part came as a very HAPPY surprise to me. Yes, I say HAPPY because I was just smiling from ear to ear while reading this one.

I already had a feeling something was up between the two, there was some tension, but I didn’t think they were together giving that they kept holding a bit of distance, as if something was standing between them. And then came right before the went to board the plane and Mitsuki just promptly confessed that they were going to get married and some more. OH MAN, at that it wouldn’t surprise me if anyone heard me squeal real loud. 😛 The ship was sailing and I was fully onboard with this couple! They really make a cute couple and I loved seeing them figure things out. Mitsuki was more willing to be open about dating and them getting married, while Asahi was a bit more holding back. While I can understand Asahi’s POV, I do hope that this trip allows him to become a bit more open, a bit more secure in things and that he isn’t afraid to show his affection/love.

I was curious how they got together because they are so different from each other. Mitsuki is living the La vida loca, while Asahi is very serious and a bit stuck-up about things. Throughout the book though we get hints on their romance and how they eventually got to be together. There are still some strings that could be connected, and I am eagerly waiting for the next volumes to see more. Not to mention something happened to Asahi that wasn’t good and I am curious what happened to him. We do get some hints and we see that both Asahi’s mom and Mitsuki are both very worried about things.

In this one we see our duo go to Thailand, India, and Georgia. I loved seeing them meet people, not just new friends but also old ones (which brought some awkwardness and I have to say I found it a tad too coincidental), see them eat local foods (and I laughed as I could just imagine what Mitsuki thought when he saw that hanging around at a stall, oh Mitsuki), see them discover gorgeous new places, get hyped about wine (well ok, that is mostly Asahi), and so much more. I love that I can join them on their journey and I definitely cannot wait to see what is next for them. Oh, and I also quite like that not everything went right. I have read plenty of travel stuff were everything just went perfect. Which is not realistic no matter how you plan things. But in this one they are all figuring it out, they got some things they want to see and they know some things, but most is new. So we see them almost get scammed and scammed for real, we see them get lost, we see them struggle with trains, and more. We see that travelling takes a toll as well. Asahi is quite grumpy during India but totally went back to happy when he got to Georgia.

The bonus trip aka the preparations and all that, I really liked that it was added! It gave more insight on how they got to go on this world trip and see them prepare for it. Because you cannot just got on a journey like that without the preparations.

The art, I had to get used to that. It is not an ugly or bad style, just a bit odd. But after I got used to it I started really liking it. I loved the scenery that was just gorgeous.

All in all, I WANT MORE! Haha, I so so need more. Not just of the travels but also of this adorable couple!

In this manga we follow two boyfriends, Asahi and Mitsuki, throughout the beginning of their journey around the world.

This was such a sweet read! In this volume we see them go to Thailand, India, and Georgia. We get to meet lots of new characters throughout their journey and that was really fun to see.

Established relationship isn't one of my favorite tropes but it was done perfectly here! There's also the only one bed trope which is amazing.

The art style is also just really great.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this and need a second volume ASAP!

Cute story of two boys (men/age 29) taking a trip around the world together. Asahi is the planner and thinker, with a more reserved personality. Mitsuki is the more impulsive one, who is a photographer. I like this mix of personalities and the way they fit so well together. Each provides some 'missing pieces' for their partner.

They start in Japan and travel to Thailand first. A nice lady ~their age helps them for the next 24 hours with dinner and sightseeing. Cool to hear her explain the 18+ different gender and sexual identities: Tom, Dee, Boat, Adam, Angee, Samyaan, etc. Her attitude of "Mai Pen Rai" means "You don't have to sweat the small stuff"

India is next. Natives are a little pushy to get them to take travel packs. They meet more friendly people, and good food (but Asahi gets a stomach ache).

Georgia comes next, with great wine and food. The boys relationship is developing, but when they meet Asahi's ex (girl) then Asahi stumbles admitting to only 'friendship' with Mitsuki.

So there easily remains more countries on their round-the-world-adventure. More sights, and food and random people. As well as their relationship becoming stronger (I hope).

I'm glad my local public library has the first four books in this series.

Good b/w graphics, with story/dialogue easy to follow.

Solid 4.25*

Man, Im pretty sure anyone who reads this manga will certainly be jealous of Suzumura and Sayama travelling the world freely, whereas in real life, any of us can’t go anywhere or see anyone due to COVID restrictions! 😩😩😩😩

I really liked how this manga showed the different kinds of foods the boys eat and my mouth legit was like a waterfall when the chicken stew with garlic sauce heavenly appeared before my eyes. It seriously looked to be a dish that I’d certainly try out if it was on the menu in a restaurant cause let’s just say, I’ll let the professional chefs cook it for me other than myself (I’ll probably burn the whole chicken ;) ) Yeah also to note, don’t read this at night like I’ve done right now, your stomach will be rumbling all night after seeing such detailed food that you wish was right in front of you! It’s good to see a BL manga like “Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide” take a different approach than the usual generic stories you’d normally read! Also to end this, I wonder what’s going on with Suzumura? Well that’s for yall to find out!

Much appreciated to the folks at Independent Publishers Group and Netgalley for giving me Volume 1 of this great manga about two pair of fellas travelling the world together!

I adored this. I loved every page. I want there to be 20 volumes of it, like, yesterday. The romance was adorable and down to earth, and the armchair travel aspect was just glorious; it made me want to get on a plane and go somewhere completely new. What a fantastic series opener! I'll just be over here chomping at the bit for more!

Un ottimo inizio! Our not so lonely planet è delizioso, e parte con una semplicità vincente. Niente da strapparsi i capelli ma molto godibile. L’autore è molto bravo a rendere graficamente i piatti del posto e i luoghi ma è un po’ meno preciso nelle anatomie. Tuttavia il viaggio è ugualmente piacevole!

I like the leads and their dynamic together. I'm also intrigued by their backstory. However, the story is boring. Even though I love traveling and learning about other cultures, the characters spend so little time in each city that you barely get a sense of what it's like before you have to move on. Wish the mangaka would slow down instead.

BL is really surprising me these days with unique plots! This manga is about a couple, Asahi and Mitsuki, going on a trip around the world together before coming back to Japan and getting married. It’s already interesting that they are in an established relationship, which I haven’t seen much of in BL manga, but I think the whole concept itself of traveling the world with your partner is incredibly romantic so I had high expectations going into this!

Sometimes for me stories with an established couple can be boring because there’s very little conflict or it’s too fluffy, but I never got bored of Asahi and Mitsuki’s relationship. From the first couple of pages, it’s clear that they have history with how comfortable they are with each other, but there’s also a newness to their relationship. There’s this mystery surrounding how they got together and why they were *really* going on this trip that had me super invested in their relationship from the beginning. I was reading into every gesture and conversation to try and piece together their relationship. Clearly one of them is more comfortable being out, so I look forward to seeing the other become more comfortable with the relationship and himself as the story progresses.

Reading this while the whole world is dealing with a pandemic made me want to travel so badly! Just like Asahi and Mitsuki were in awe of the places they were visiting and discovering, so too was I while I read this. The art is absolutely gorgeous! The locations honestly took my breath away and the food made me so hungry. It felt very well-researched as if the author had been there themselves.

On the surface, I think this manga seems like a simple story; it’s just a couple traveling the world together, but there is a lot of nuance because they are two gay men who are still navigating coming out and testing the waters of their relationship. I definitely want to continue with them on their travels, but what I’m most excited for is seeing what will happen when they come back to Japan and how their relationship will have evolved hopefully for the better.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This first volume of “Our Not So Lonely Planet” was a fascinating and thoughtful exploration of not only world travel but of self-identity, gender and sexuality. The opening sentence of this volume is “People always have a reason for going on a journey.” It’s a sentiment that echoes throughout the entire volume. The story follows Mitsuki and Asahi as they embark on a trip around the world. It’s clear from the narrative that they have been a couple for a long time, but within the first few pages we find out that Asahi doesn’t appear to have come out to his family yet about his relationship with Mitsuki, and compared to Mitsuki, Asahi doesn’t seem as secure with his own identity. This seems like a pressing issue for him as he and Mitsuki promised one another that if they can travel around the entire world together, then they will get married at the end of their journey.
As they travel to different locations and experience the culture and lifestyles of different people, they each become introspective, and it’s then that we see glimpses of their past as individuals and as a couple.
I saw a lot of reviews that complained about how they wanted this manga to be more lovey-dovey and were expecting more over-the-top romance. I’ll admit if that’s what you are looking for then this probably isn’t for you. However, if you want to read about a couple that seems realistic and watch them work through everyday hardships that all couples can relate to, then this is definitely worth your time. You won’t find many splash pages of two boys staring seductively at one another while surrounded by flowers, but you will find a story that feels authentic and more grounded in reality than a lot of other romance. And somehow it’s the realism of this that makes their relationship all the more satisfying to read about.

I wanted to like this.

The premise started out ok. Two cute guys going on an around the world vacation. I honestly wouldn’t have even guessed they were dating or in love if not for them telling me. It just fell flat to me and most of the scenes felt like filler for someone to say things they like about certain countries which is fine but I’m looking for a bit more relationship stuff. The art is ok, it reminded me of the style I used to see in older mangas.

Just didn’t do much for me.

This is the first part of a series that follows a gay couple, who go on a round-the-world trip, throughout every country they visit. Mitsuki is the slightly airheaded sweetheart. who wears his heart on his sleeve, while Asahi is closeted and takes everything very seriously, as opposed to his partner. I'd say this is a very quick and enjoyable read. We see the characters go through three countries (Thailand, India and Georgia) and meet different people during their travels. It felt like I was flying through the pages in a way that I don't do usually.

Asahi is very high-strung, and at first I was afraid, the story would be just him being grumpy at Mitsuki for no reason - while this is the case at first, it's clear that this volume marks the start of his journey of becoming more at ease, both in the general sesne, but also in terms of accepting himself as a queer man in a queer relationship. With every subequent country, it feels like he sheds a bit of that protective shell, and I'm so excited to see how he develops in the following volumes. Mitsuki is written with a bit less complexity for now, but he's a great foil for Asahi and watching him be so open about his feelings and love made the story so sweet. I really love the idea of following an already established couple that has more things to figure out.

Art-wise, I think there is some room for improvement - the mangaka has a tendency to render backgrounds with the same line weight and detail as the foreground, which makes the characters blend into things behind them. I do, however, love the way the facial expressions are drawn.

Absolute Leseempfehlung!

tw: closeted character, internalized homophobia

A gay couple from Japan goes on a trip around the world. This volume focuses on their initial departure from Japan, a stop in Thailand, India and Georgia. I assume the rest of the volumes will go to more places and expand on their backgrounds.

For me, the strongest stop was Thailand, which allowed them to meet with another LGBTQ couple (a young woman and a Thai tomboy - shown as a woman who dresses and looks like a man). It was good to see them interact with a couple authentically themselves - Asashi, the very uncomfortable smaller one, is closeted and chronically unwilling to do anything, which makes his desire to travel the world all the stranger.

There isn't enough here for me, personally, to feel compelled to read more. It's cute enough (I think there's some not-so-great stuff about India in the India section, that I found kind of a bummer) but I don't find the mystery (why was Asashi sick? What was his situation with his job? How will they get married if Asashi isn't out to his parents?) enough, nor the travel bits. This might have worked better for me as a series of short comics at the back of a longer feature. I don't know. Either way, I probably won't seek out more, but if you're looking for slice of life travelogue, then I think you could likely do far worse.
