Intrigued by the concept--was hoping for a Philippa Gregory-esque historical novel.

I got bogged down in the flowery, purple prose.

Lots of description--maybe 80% of this book is composed of descriptions of food, places, and things. The characters themselves were rather one-dimensional, and the dialogue is a bit melodramatic. There's the sense that the author wanted to be poetic and epic about the narrative but overall the writing was a bit too florid for my taste.

That said, the era in which this book is set is interesting.

Moon Queen by Katharine Branning is a captivating and emotionally rich story that explores identity, courage, and the quiet strength found in self-discovery. As I read the novel, I was drawn into a world shaped by mythology and inner conflict, where the protagonist’s journey mirrors the universal struggle between fear and purpose. The writing feels lyrical yet grounded, allowing the reader to connect deeply with the character’s emotional growth rather than just the external adventure. What stayed with me after finishing the book was its message about embracing one’s true calling, even when the path is uncertain. Moon Queen is not only a fantasy tale, but also a reflective reminder that personal transformation often begins with listening to one’s inner voice and daring to step into the unknown.
