Malik: The Demon Fox

Rate this book
In an ongoing war between humans and animals, Malik a human hunter is forced into an uneasy relationship with his worst enemy, who has possessed his body and transformed him into an abomination. The two opponents must learn to work together in order to free themselves from this unholy union, and help their new found friends. This seems almost impossible as they discover their true enemies are powerful demons hidden within the very governments they once served.

Malik: The Demon Fox by Gareth Mayers is a novelette about a famous and respected hunter living in a dystopian future America roughly 300 years in the future. The concept of this story is as imaginative as it is intriguing. A future world where Mother Earth is a living being in control of events. Humanity and Animals are engaged in a war lasting decades, with no end in sight. Malik is hired to assassinate the queen of the Wolf Clan. He succeeds, but is doomed to have the son of his prey forced into his body by the gods.
Malik assassinates Queen Maco of the Wolf Clan. The queen’s son, Cerberus, violates the law by vowing revenge. Cerberus accepts his fate, but in exacting his revenge for his mother’s death, he is condemned to a life combined with Malik in Malik’s savagely battered body.
Malic/Cerberus recover at the hands of Agita and her daughter, Nola.
The story of Malik begins with imagination of a possible future Earth. Earth is a living being in control of planetary events. Humanity and Animals are waging a decades long war for supremacy of the planet, and the war is at a tentative stalemate. In an effort to end the stalemate and the war, Malik is contracted to assassinate Maco, Queen of the Wolf Clan. Gareth Mayers attempt is laudable. His technique needs work. I found myself often confused with the dialogue. Mr. Mayers frequently drifted into differing points of view, often within the same paragraph, and occasionally within the same sentence. It was difficult at times to understand exactly who was speaking. Basic grammar also needs some work. I hope, subsequent installments (part 2 is coming, and I am looking forward to reading it) will be more polished and easier to follow.
I congratulate Mr. Mayers for publishing his story. He put it out there, and I’m glad he did. I’m looking forward to discovering what happens next. I’m giving Mr. Mayers 4 stars.
