Rate this book
Song of The Trinity 2: The Broken Tusk by Vadhan plunges readers into an epic mythological fantasy filled with immortal warriors, dark prophecies, and the relentless quest for power. In this thrilling sequel, the battle-scarred heroes—Aswathaman, an immortal warrior, and Shatru, a demi-god—find themselves grappling with the turbulent aftermath of their hard-won victory in the harrowing conflicts for Gora Pathaal and the Great Circular Hall. Although they have secured a temporary reprieve, this hard-earned peace is destined to be short-lived.

Even as celebrations are set to commence, ominous shadows loom on the horizon. The Spear Prophecies foretell of dark times ahead, and the tension escalates with the resurrection of Trigund the Anomaly, an entity returned from death with intentions that threaten to engulf the fourteen worlds of power in chaos. This formidable foe, now resurrected in human form, has dealt a devastating blow to Indra, the king of the Devas, aiming to dissolve the fragile alliances that once held the cosmos together.

As the stakes rise, the prison eternal becomes increasingly vulnerable to encroaching evil. An age-old conflict is reignited as forces seek the key to unlock an unprecedented power. Enter Kali, the lord of Kaliyug, who pulls the strings as the master puppeteer ready to unleash havoc upon the realms. His insatiable hunger for victory is palpable; he can practically taste it as he prepares to disrupt the balance of power that has safeguarded the universe for ages.

In the face of overwhelming odds, a thin line of defense emerges, comprised of our steadfast heroes who must once again rally to protect the *Song of the Trinity*. But will their courage and resolve be sufficient to thwart the encroaching darkness? The challenges they face will test not only their strength but also their very beliefs and allegiances as they navigate a landscape fraught with betrayal and deception.

Song of The Trinity 2: The Broken Tusk is a riveting continuation of Vadhan's grand saga, combining elements of mythological lore with thrilling action, suspense, and heart-stirring heroism. As readers journey alongside Aswathaman and Shatru, they will explore themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the relentless battle between good and evil. The richly woven narrative invites readers to immerse themselves in a world where the fate of the fourteen worlds hangs by a thread, and every decision carries monumental consequences.

Prepare to be captivated by this extraordinary tale where the fate of divine and mortal realms intertwine. Will the heroes prevail against the darkness, or will the insidious plots of evil triumph over the light? Adventure awaits in this masterfully crafted mythological fantasy that promises to enthrall readers from the very first page!

Sequels are always difficult. To take a story forward while keeping the growth of the characters a constant and developing a plot while meeting the expectations of the readers who want double the fun, double the adventure and even double the story, it's not an easy task. But Vadhan delivers and how! The beginning of the story is one of the most engaging retelling of a legend.

So what is it about? After the devastating wars at Gora Pathaal and the Great Circular Hall, the immortal warrior Aswathaman and the Demi-God Shatru believe they have secured a fragile peace. But before the echoes of battle can fade, threats are ready to surface again. Indra is injured. Kali is about to break free. And all hell is about to be unleashed.

The first chapter is one of the most interesting and engaging part of the book, that stands out as a prologue as well as it does as a short story with a definite beginning, middle and an end. It retells the story of the Elephant god's mouse. A great way to hook the readers and keep their expectations up.

Like the first part, the author here too has merged the elements of fantasy as well as thriller storytelling. Little twists and turns that come regularly propel the story forward, keeping the momentum going as well as keeping the reader's interest up.
Have a look:
"No one knows where the tusk is. If no one knows, no one can take it or use it, whatever. It is safe. We don't have to worry about it. But consider this, Sunanda and I had a dream a while ago. In that dream, Kroni is looking for his 'what's-its-name', cloak. They tell me the cloak works both ways, it not only protects the universe from the Kali's power but also helps the man channel a lot of power that he grabbed from his six brothers after he killed them. We all know the cloak's here in Indralok, under King Indra's protection. So maybe, just maybe, the Kali is trying to make it as if he's chasing after the tusk while he is actually looking for the cloak."

As the story progresses, the author builds up emotion and drama, and throws the characters into the mix. The reader can't help build a bridge of empathy with the lives of these people. An emotional cord is immediately hooked and it continues until the last page is turned over.

The portions describing the ailing king Indra are quite harrowing and have a real world feel about them.
Read it here:
"The King convulsed into agonised spasms every few moments. His eyes snapped open often, perhaps in surprise at the depths to which his pain could take him. Blood vessels burst into tiny rivulets of ruby red fluid over his iris, spreading a crimson map on his eyes. His hands and legs were lumps of flesh, each finger and toe twisted and oozing blood through the nails. His handsome face, once smooth and creaseless was contorted. Indra's brow had protruded into a shelf while his eyes were sunk into great dark circled hollows. The silken milk white hair was bunched into clumps on the boiled surface of his scalp, sweaty and sparse."

Vadhan has made his characters quirky yet strong. On one side, there is Shatru, the hybrid child of deva father Indra and Asura mother Bhavani. And in another side there is Bhavani herself: the queens of Asura who vanquished devas. She is kickass and doesn't back down. Have a look at her delightful character sketch:
"Queen Bhavani ruled all six worlds of Pathaal. She had no king Vor consort. At least not openly. Everyone knew of her liaison with the King of Devas. They knew the result of that liaison. A son considered an inspiration by many while a few thought of him as an abomination. She was haughty, temperamental, arrogant and extremely intelligent. All the hallmarks of an alpha female."

The author has left many one liners embedded in the story. Sharing a few that Iiked here:
-The end of all life is a ripple effect of something as frivolous as revenge.
-Randomness is the way of the universe.
-Extinction is not an event. It is a chain reaction.

Pick it up this festive season.

🥀After finishing Song of the Trinity, I believed I had seen the pinnacle of Indian mythological fantasy literature. However, the author has drastically increased the stakes with: The Broken Tusk. Not merely a continuation, this sequel feels like a deeper, more expansive, and more intense dive into a cosmos where gods, asuras, & immortal warriors are engaged in combat that determines the fate of fourteen worlds.

🥀The story begins immediately following the devastating battles of the Great Circular Hall and Gora Pathaal. Aswathaman & Shatru, who feel they have at last achieved some measure of peace, are reunited with us. However, as readers, we quickly come to understand that harmony in this universe is as brittle as a flame during a tempest.

🥀Without wasting any time, Vadhan plunges us into a dire prophecy known as the Spear Prophecies, which foretells the return of an Asura ruler who strikes Indra, the ruler of the Devas, with a deadly stroke. The most captivating thing to me was how Vadhan skillfully combined myth and fantasy. The characters we came to love in the previous book are back with greater nuance, and their storylines change in unexpected ways. With his never-ending struggles and eternal curse, Aswathaman remains a tragic and powerful figure. The Demi-God Shatru is caught between allegiance and fate.

🥀Every character seems to be bearing the burden of both cosmic repercussions and human decisions. The electrifying quality of the reading is due to this slow-burning tension. The world-building that Vadhan does is one of his strongest points. He reimagines mythology in a grandiose cinematic style rather than merely recounting it.

🥀The plot plays out in your mind like an epic film thanks to the detailed descriptions of heavenly regions, the unadulterated drama of battlegrounds, and the emotional upheaval of divine machinations. It is distinguished from other contemporary mythological literature by its blend of myth, fantasy, and philosophical overtones.
In addition, I liked how the story raises more significant issues among all the action: What does immortality cost? Is it ever really possible to change fate?

🥀And when the gods themselves start to falter, what happens? Beyond the excitement of battles and predictions, these ideas give the novel depth; it is as much with regard to the human and heavenly condition as it is about combat. It is audacious, daring, and full of startling scenes that will cause you to stop, go back, and consider the primordial forces that shaped the cosmos. If the first book set the groundwork, this one completely upends it. Anyone who like action, mythology, and creativity combined into an epic that lasts long after the last page should read this. I promise you won't want to miss the start of the battle for the fourteen worlds.

Song of the Trinity: The Broken Tusk is a mythological science fiction fantasy, the second in the Song of the Trinity series by author Vadhan.

The Rise of Kali is about a bunch of mortal and immortal characters – some we know from mythology, some new – coming together to try and stop Kroni or Kali, the lord of Kaliyug from escaping his prison, the Song of the Trinity. Because if he does, the universe is in danger.
Now, in The Broken Tusk, these characters are breathing a sigh of relief, but heroes can’t rest, can they?
Because dark times are coming, and Kali is ready to break out of the prison and claim victory.

My favorite things about this book:
- It is insanely fun to read!
- The Rap Sage – yes, he does what you think he does.
- Asks some pretty big questions and makes you think about how good vs evil and fair vs unfair can be two different debates.
- Has a complicated plot line based on Hindu mythology and strategy and war moves, but which doesn’t lose itself.
- The wit and humor lighten the story and make it more interesting than it already is.
- Adds science fiction to the mythology and fantasy from the first book, and takes it to the next level.
- Well-fleshed out characters. Look out for that one character who will blow your mind with their presence!

I do wish that the women had been more visible during the battles and that new characters and their lores were introduced earlier in the book rather than towards the end where it hampered the speed a little.
But regardless, Song of the Trinity: The Broken Tusk takes it up a notch from the first book in terms of strategic action, magic, mythology, and science fiction. Highly recommend!

Again a banger of a read by the author Vadhan. So far, I have read all his books and not a single one of it disappointed me.
Song of the Trinity 2 was a 4 star read for me till I read the last 20 pages. Those 20 pages just upped the game, with some smart revelations which I didn't see coming, hence 5 stars. Apart from thrilling, fast paced reads what I like about Vadhan's books is the respect with which he treats our mythology/itihas/history.
He makes it entertaining with his brilliant imagination but also at the same time keeps the integrity of mythological character or legend intact. Unlike many psuedo intellectual authors out there who like to give their twisted twist to our mythology/itihas/history (as they look from the lens of today), like Karna's point of view or Ravana's point of view or Duryodhna's point of view or any other character's POV and forcing their so called liberal's aesthetics to the history, thus damaging its very fabric.

Now coming back to the book. Author's imagination, world building is applause worthy and deserves all the recognition. Hope a producer with some guts and deep pockets can take it to celluloid.
His characters are always quite quirky who can bring up a surprise at any time. Though my personal favorite is Shatru of whom I hope to read more like his earliest book titled Shatru. A character like Shatru deserves his own individual adventures.

So, I strongly recommend this to anyone who bother to read this review.

**"Song of The Trinity 2: The Broken Tusk"** by Vadhan is a gripping continuation of an epic saga that masterfully blends Indian mythology with high fantasy. Picking up after the climactic events of the first book, it thrusts readers back into a universe teetering on the edge of chaos. The return of Aswathaman and Shatru, the ominous Spear Prophecies, and the mortal rebirth of an Asura king raise the stakes dramatically.

Vadhan’s storytelling is immersive and cinematic, filled with powerful imagery and well-paced action. The looming threat of Kali’s release builds tension throughout, and the philosophical undertones give the narrative depth beyond its fast-paced plot. The world-building is rich, drawing on Vedic lore to create a vivid multi-dimensional universe filled with gods, demons, and mortal heroes.

This book is a must-read for fans of the Shiva Trilogy or the Kalki series, offering a fresh yet familiar dive into mythological fantasy. With high stakes, unforgettable characters, and a plot that keeps you hooked, “The Broken Tusk” is a worthy sequel that deepens the lore and raises the tension in all the right ways.

A thrilling, thought-provoking, and utterly compelling read.
