Graham Murray Raymond, the Seventh Duke of Warwick, has little care for his title and even less for society. Suspected of murder and known as the Black Duke, for his misdeeds and those of his father, he is intent on spending his lifetime alone, without a wife or children, to ensure he does not continue the family tradition of violence.
Unlike most young ladies her age, twenty-year-old Sophia Claybourne would rather go to university than to the altar, but furthering her education is forbidden, and she is expected to marry well. Sophie does her best to avoid the latter while seeking knowledge wherever she can, walking a constant line with her father, who is determined to use her marriage to his advantage.
When Graham receives a letter from Lady Claybourne, requesting his assistance saving Sophie from marriage to a viscount who is his nemesis and has his own reputation of ill deeds, Graham agrees to help, as it will advance his interests as well. But Sophie has made her own plans, does not care to be rescued, and has a will as strong as his. Graham may have met his match in her and found the one person who can save him from his past.

Michele Paige Holmes is the author of eighteen published romance novels and five novellas in the Timeless Romance Anthologies.
She loves history and all things romantic, though the reality of her life is often less so, with piles of laundry to be folded, meals to be cooked, and dishes to be washed. She finds those things blessings too, or evidence of the blessings in her life—her husband, five, mostly grown children, and five charming grandchildren (four of whom reside in her home).
She is married to her high school sweetheart, a true Ironman who considers doing ultramarathons and triathlons fun. The only time Michele logs serious miles is at Disney theme parks, but she and her super-fit husband have been happily married for thirty-five years, in spite of her lack of coordination and lagging fitness levels.
While her husband is out running, biking, or swimming, Michele’s furry companion Sherlock Holmes—a Cavapoo strongly resembling a teddy bear—keeps her company and keeps her feet warm during the cold winter months in Utah.
In recent years Michele has enjoyed traveling to some of the locations she writes about. This summer she will be returning to Scotland to do research for upcoming Hearthfire Historical novels.

Michele Paige Holmes has long been a favorite author of mine! Ever since I was a teenager, I have been hooked by her books. The emotions she evokes through her writing and the characters and worlds she builds create wonderful books and stories that I love. I was so excited that she wrote another Hearthfire Romance book! And just a heads up, this story isn't over yet, so there is more to come soon. Yay!!!
Graham and Sophia (Sophie to her friends) have quite the story! I loved how the author opened the book and the first meeting between these two. Let's just say that first impressions can be deceiving. You have to keep reading to truly get to know these two and understand their circumstances.
Graham is offering Sophie a marriage of convenience to protect her but she's headstrong and makes her own changes to all that he has done to help her. I loved how these two worked together and talked and figured out everything. Some of it took time but it was so fun to watch them get to that point of trust. Hahaha! The carriage! Okay, you'll just have to read to understand. But you're going to love them!
All of the tension and chemistry between these two was so palpable. This author is amazing at writing that between characters. Part of the reason I keep coming back for all of her books! But so much more than that at the same time. You'll be cheering these two on and talking to them through your book and telling them to just get over some of their hangups and trust each other! Soooo good!!!
There's a lot more I want to say about it but I also don't want to spoil the adventure of everything within this book. That's why you need to read it! And now I'll be patiently waiting for the next book. Which does continue Graham and Sophie's story but also will include another character's story so we'll get two for one in the next one. I can't wait!!!
Content: I would consider this a clean read but there are some topics addressed that might trigger readers. Even with these topics the author wrote it in a way that was sensitive to them. Some mild moments of peril. Some very mild innuendos. This book does deal with the slave trade and talks about the treatment of the slaves. The author did so in a sensitive way. Some talk of death of other characters. Some talk of trauma for a couple children in the book.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
What a beautiful ride it was into this Regency romance mostly set in Scotland. I was immediately drawn into this book and fell madly in love with these characters. Their journey to Graham's distant home is full of romantic tension and challenges, but the central traits of these two characters are firmly established and occurrences in their destination only solidified them.
The cozy routine and happenings in Scotland, especially with Graham’s niece and nephew, warmed my heart, but it was the magnetic pull between this duo that captured the magical essence of this story. There are moments of past trauma to deal with and connections with new friends that made me smile (can I just mention the governess dresses? 😆), but the rejected marriage of convenience lurked in my heart, sparking hope with every glance and touch.
Michele Paige Holmes crafts a heartfelt tale that dazzled me. I read and listened to this rich story and was equally mesmerized by both. Although the story seems to end abruptly, there is more coming soon!!!
Content: talk of past slavery/mistreatment/m*rder; mild+ romance (scandalous moments/non-graphic and past infidelity)
*I received a complimentary ebook and audiobook copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given*
I don't know what I was expecting when I started this book but it exceeded whatever those expectations were. The story drew me in right away, and I found myself loving the characters far more than I anticipated!
"She'd rather go to university than to the altar." That sums up Sophia Claybourne (known to her friends as Sophie). She dreams of a future filled with knowledge rather than marriage, but her father has other plans. Sophie is no damsel in distress and has plans of her own to avoid her father's scheme.
Graham Murray Raymond, aka the infamous "Black Duke," is a man weighed down by his family’s dark legacy and haunted by accusations of murder. He's retreated from society, embracing a solitary existence, but because of what happened to his sister, he's drawn into Sophie's affairs under the guise of saving her from an unscrupulous suitor. However, he soon realizes that Sophie is a force to be reckoned with.
I loved these characters!! Sophia is intelligent with an independent streak that could land her in trouble in that era. Graham is a troubled soul that wants to avoid repeating his family's history, he's cut himself off from everyone but a few trusted friends. I loved how their initial clash of wills gradually gave way to mutual respect and unexpected attraction, but despite that attraction and chemistry, their romance unfolded slowly.
Even with the seriousness of the situation (of Sophie's father and his business deal), there's still quite a bit of humor in this book, especially with Sophie's first attempt to be a proper governess. Here are a couple of lines from Graham that had me giggling: "He had no doubt that were she not in the dress, it would stand up just fine on its own." and "You'll need to change. You'll terrify the children in that."
I can't wait for the next book to get more of Sophie and Graham and find out what happened to Sophie's younger sister. I received a copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.
I loved this book. I wrestled with how to rate it as I felt Sophie's character wasn't consistent in the first part of the book. One example, she wanted to be free from having to marry Lord Newsome and decided that being a governess would be her best option. As a bluestocking, she was prepared with letters of recommendation from her teachers and a plethora of books, only to not think about how her letters of recommendation would lead her horrible father directly to her? I thought that was something a smart woman as herself would have thought of before it was pointed out to her. It's a very small discrepancy that doesn't truly matter to the outcome of the story.
With that being said, I still gave this book 5 stars as it was filled with romance, intrigue, sorrow, and all the emotions. I should give it 4 stars for how it ended. I would have been happy to read an overlong book that finished Sophie and Graham's story. But I am eagerly waiting for the second book, "Love Undying," release this summer, so I can see how it all plays out!!
I did receive this book in exchange for a review. I am so grateful I was chosen. It was a great read.
I enjoyed the book and the main characters and some of the secondary characters. I think many of the characters could have been fleshed out more thoroughly. Evidently, the story will continue in a second book which will resolve some of the conflict that wasn’t yet wrapped up and also go into Olivia’s story. I’m not super keen to go into the second book knowing that it’s going to be full of all the bad stuff that chased them through the first book, though I realize that’s the realistic conclusion. I’m also not the least bit interested in Olivia’s story as she’s one of the characters (the main one, if she’s to be a key character in the next book) that I think should’ve been better fleshed out.
A story of struggling with the past This book is well written but the ending felt so abrupt I didn’t feel I could give it five stars. Sophie’s father planned to marry her off, to an undesirable man many years older, to increase his business. Fortunately, his plans are disrupted when Graham, the Duke of Warwick aka the Black Duke, announces his engagement to Sophia at a dinner party. Even though Sophia feared the Duke’s reputation she agrees to travel with him and become a nanny for his niece and nephew. However, danger follows them wherever they go. Will both be able to work through the demons of their pasts as well as help two traumatized children? I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
I have never read a book, I did not love from this author. And that is still a true fact. This book is so tender and charming. I had a hard time putting it down. Graham is a victim of his father, who was a victim of his father… hence Graham has made the decision - it stops with him. He will not marry, and he will not sire any children. Will he be able to keep that decision? When a mother asks him to interfere with protecting her daughter from an unfavorable arranged marriage? There are so many intricate details to the story. Some are difficult to fathom, and yet they happen in every day life. I thought the author did a wonderful job of describing these delicate topics in a heartfelt way. On the other hand, I didn’t feel like this was a depressing story. It was full of witty banter, intriguing characters, and sweet swoony romance. It is a wonderful clean, no swearing, historical read Triggers: Emotional and physical abuse against adults and children. Alcohol abuse. Slavery. All of these subjects are handled with as much care and dignity as possible. The development and growth that comes from these subjects can have a significant impact on someone's life. I loved Sophie, the way she was able to be strong and independent and yet caring and nurturing at the same time. As for the ending, I appreciate the author explaining that she couldn’t possibly incorporate everything of the story into one book. So there is a small conclusion but more of their story to come. I really hope it comes SOON, because, the sneak peek has me biting my nails!!
This story took me by surprise in the best way. It was such a tender, lovely, and piercing story. I loved the journey and unique focus. I put so many tabs in this book! If you want a story filled with emotion, heart, and growth this one is for you. This was my first read by Michele and it will not be my last.
Graham Murray is a knight in shining armor so many times and he doesn’t even realize it. His determination to right wrongs and his fierce loyalty and protective nature will just make you swoon. He has a crippling fear for his future self and so he distances himself from everyone to try to make it easier when he leaves. But could it be possible that he’s stronger than what he fears?
Sophia Claybourne has no interest in marriage and just wishes the world was different so she could go to University. Her father arranges a marriage to an awful man to strengthen his business, luckily for her Graham swoops in. Running away from certain pain she ends up traveling with Graham and oh the journey is long, lots of time to get to know each other.
“Perhaps more ladies should think and act as you.” What a different world this might be.
Loved: 💛Castle in Scotland 🧡Getting Caught in Sleet/Snow 💛Shelter in a run down Gatekeeper Cabin 🧡One Horse 💛Obvious Chemistry between them 🧡Their Kiss 💛His Sweet Niece and Nephew
I just absolutely adored this read. The slavery Represenation was so heartfelt and piercing. The growth of the MC’s was such a climb and I loved how things worked out. Thank you so much Michele for this beautiful book.
CW: the prologue has an intense fighting scene. Death in past and on page. Physical Abuse mentioned and not too graphic.
This was my first book by this author. I really enjoyed the story. We do get a happy ending, but the resolution of Graham and Sophie’s story is not complete.
I enjoyed the adventure and the dash of danger that Graham and Sophie faced. I loved Graham with all his grumpiness, self-doubt, and protectiveness. I loved seeing Sophie’s growth and all of her tender moments with Ayla & Matthew. I LOVED little Matthew.
The writing of this book is fantastic. I enjoyed the banter and “discussions” between Graham and Sophie. I really liked Graham’s friends William and Elizabeth too.
Quotes I loved: “Actually, you were the one who acted to prevent that most unsuitable match—for which I was grateful. But I then had to act to avoid being stuck with you.” “Hmm. How is that going?” “Not well! Not well at all.”
“I wish you could see the man you are—far removed from your sire. You are your own man, making your own decisions, and those he made have no weight in yours.”
This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
This was my first read by Michele Paige Holmes, and oh my stars, what a wonderful surprise this story was. I have found a new must read author and I am eagerly awaiting the release of Love Undying! If you enjoy the characters and plots of Nichole Van and Mimi Matthews books, then Michele is an author you must check out.
Love Unbound is a fantastic historical romance with some suspense thrown in the mix, between two people that have sworn off matrimony. Sophie is a brilliant young woman, who knows her own mind, and is not about to marry whatever old scoundrel her father foists upon her to further his business ventures. But when a handsome stranger declares that the current dinner party is actually to cover for an engagement announcement, Sophie is determined to play the charade long enough to escape in the night. Yet, the handsome stranger, Graham, also known as the Black Duke for being accused of murder while in the Caribbean, shocks her by declaring to all he has already secured her hand for marriage.
Graham’s announcement sets off an avalanche of decisions, emotions, and carefully calculated plans to thwart her father’s and her original intended, the despicable viscount’s grand scheme. Graham saves Sophie from an unwanted marriage, but the danger has only truly begun.
Companionship, respect, admiration, and soon love grow. But Graham refuses to acknowledge his feelings, he will not become his father and threaten the lives of those he holds dear. Sophie soon realizes that marriage isn’t as terrible as she once believed and she will not stop trying to convince Graham that he is not the man his father was.
I could go on and on, but seriously this book was amazing! A faked marriage of convenience, daring escapes, she saves herself (‘cause she is Sophie, a smart, capable woman), he takes care of her, lots of forced proximity,… just go read it!!
Many thanks to the author for my gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
This was my first book by Michele, and it was an interesting blend of adventure, emotion, romance, and thought provoking themes!
I’ll admit, the prologue had me wondering if this book was the right fit for me… while I don’t mind a little murder and danger in my books, some of the early events were a little tough to read. That being said, as the story unfolded, I gained a deeper understanding of the characters and how their journey connected with those early tough events. While this book does touch on some difficult topics, Michele handles them with care and sensitivity!
I really admired Sophia’s strength and determination, and Graham’s internal struggles made him a very compelling character! Their slow burn romance had some truly sweet moments that made the book all that more memorable🩷
The ending wraps up on a hopeful note but leaves several unresolved issues setting the stage for the next book beautifully!
Thank you so much to Michele and RRMirror Press for the complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Wow! This book is heart-wrenching, and funny, and fresh instead of stuffy or formulaic for a historical novel/proper romance.
There's a lot about freedom --- whether that be from slavery, misogyny in society, or, in Graham's case, somewhat standing in your own way, even if it's understandable why --- and ethical questions, like whether the worst people on the planet deserve death. I loved the children, the Scottishness, and obviously the blossoming of the romance, too.
So now, we'll just have to wait for the sequel this summer! It should be a lot of fun!
Sophie is determined to never marry, however her father has other ideas. He’s determined to see her betrothed to Lord Newsome, or Lord Nuisance, as Sophie thinks of him. In order to escape the betrothal, she runs away to become a governess. Graham has his own reasons for not wanting to see Sophie marry Lord Newsome, so when he sees a chance to stop it, he takes it.
This book is really good! I feel like this story is unique as it covers topics I don’t see mentioned in a lot of books set in this time period, but they were certainly going on in the world. It made for an interesting and at times emotional story. I’m glad there is a sequel coming out, because I was very curious about what happened to Olivia, Sophie’s sister, and there were a few other storylines that didn’t seem quite complete. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!
I received a complementary copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I liked this book but it did have some tough topics to deal with. This is one where the sins of the parents are paid for by their children's suffering. Domestic violence, emotional and physical abuse, marrying off kids into dangerous situations, feeding off of passing abusive traits on to the heir and so forth. There is also verbal and physical abuse of slaves and murder. So much harshness. A lot of it told in past tense since it happened before the opening of the book but some of it the reader witnesses. On the other hand, there is also much tenderness between the two main characters and the children in their care. I loved those tender moments in the story. I loved that Sophie was so determined to gain her education and refused to follow social norms and I loved that Graham was so willing to attempt to right wrongs and defend those who couldn't defend themselves.
The story feels like it gets a happily ever after ending but the author lets the reader know that their story isn't finished yet. There were too many loose ends that couldn't be wrapped up by the end of this book so it will continue into the next. I kinda wish this one could have been cut down a little during the yoyo part of their relationship and have moved on with the story. I don't usually read sneak peaks because I don't like getting caught up in a chapter and then have it stop abruptly and I have to wait to find out what happens. I made the mistake of reading this one in the back of the book and now I'm dying to get the next one.
An enjoyable read with unique characters, drama and love.
Do you love historical romance? If so, this is an absolute must-read! Sophie, a strong-willed and intelligent lady of the ton, is scheming to escape an unwanted marriage arranged by her cruel father. But Graham, a Duke with a dark reputation, has his own plans for helping Sophie. As the stakes are raised and sparks between them begin to fly, Graham and Sophie must decide what truly matters most to them- and what they are willing to risk to receive it.
Sophie and Graham’s characters were so fresh! Sophie’s honesty, wit, curiosity, and kindness were a combination I haven’t seen in any other book character- and I’ve read a lot of books! And of course I loved Graham! Moody, brooding, flawed Graham, with tons of baggage and trauma that somehow has not completely corrupted and jaded him. I loved seeing the sincerity, passion, and kindness that was locked up inside his angry soul. Sophie’s inner steel and frankness made her the perfect candidate to go head to head with Graham.
It was also very interesting to read about the depravity of slavery through the eyes of individuals whose wealth was at least partially built on the backs of such atrocities. Most regency books are all betrothals and balls and beauty, so I enjoyed wrestling with the uncomfortable truths of slavery, prejudice, and sexism of the time. Plus, these themes really added depth and complexity to both Sophie and Graham’s characters without overwhelming the plot.
The writing itself was also top notch, with lots of interesting sub plots and side characters. There are other books in the Hearthfire Romance series, but this was my first read by this author and I had no trouble following the characters. I’m excited to go back and read some of her other books. Overall, this was a compelling read that I carried with me everywhere until I could finish it!
Love UNBOUND A Hearthfire Romance Book #4 by: MICHELE PAIGE HOLMES @michelepaigeholmes
-I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“I promise to never give you a reason to shoot me.”
~Graham Murray Raymond, the Seventh Duke of Warwick, receives a letter requests assistance in saving Sophia Claybourne, who does not care to be rescued, and has a will as strong as his… Graham may have just met his match in her and found the one person who can save him from his past…
“Love is real, after all.”
Love Unbounded, my friends is such a riveting historical romance, that has touches of suspense stitched in so carefully between two people that have sworn off matters of matrimony. This dear story will beckon your attention from the very start and take you on a dear and tender journey that will include a faked marriage of convenience, forced proximity, delightful banter, wonderful humor. This tender story will also tug on your heartstrings with the beauty and depth dear characters have and what they must wrestle with, ahead. Stay the course. I loved seeing such endearing characters rise above such heartwrenching upbringings, a gossiping society, and stand up for what’s right, to making great decisions, and ultimately, finding themselves open to the possibility of love, and then to find their own home with belonging was simply beautiful! Through this story, even when there is conflict, struggles, and challenges, dear hope, healing, light, love, and possibility that shines so brightly throughout! This is a story that moved me with the dear read and I eagerly look forward to more to come! 🙌🏻📚💯
“I have come to believe the statement that love is the most powerful force of nature.”
-Content: violence, physical and emotional abuse, sizzling kisses, fade to black romance.
“You are the star of each night and the brightness of every morning.”
-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Found Family Fake Marriage of Convenience The Cottage Family Curse Kissing with wild abandon (clean) Graham’s passion for helping/protecting Sophie’s passion for knowledge Their Friendship Ayla & Matthew-so sweet William and Elizabeth Slow Burn Lucy-best maid ever The Castle
Wow, just wow! This was my first read from Michele and it was wonderful! I loved it and can’t wait until the next book comes out. This book does continue into the next one, but could easily be read as a standalone book. It’s the 3rd in the series.
To save her from a horrible marriage to a viscount, Graham, the Black Duke answers Lady Claybourne’s letter and agrees to take her daughter, Sophie away and marry her. However, Sophie doesn’t want to marry, she wants an education. Little did they know how much they’d have in common or the chemistry, tension they’d have. There was a lot of sadness, abuse (past) death and slavery trade talk in this book, but it was done with sensitivity and lined with many happy and tender moments. This story was full of so many wonderful things and I loved it!
The story is a cute love story but it lacks any thrills or fears, just the standard romance. It’s a sweet romance and the characters are good, their growth is great, but don’t expect any kind of suspense. Still very enjoyable.
Loved this Regency romance, set mostly in Scotland. Graham, a duke, thwarts an unwanted match between Sophie and a despicable viscount her father wants to force her to marry, to unite their plantations in the Caribbean. Graham, whose sister died on St. Kitts due to other despicable men, gives Sophie the chance to go with him and some loyal servants to his hidden estate in Scotland. He plans on marrying her to give her safety, but then to always stay apart. But when both of their hearts get involved, the duo who had planned never to marry, must fight through doubts and demons as their hearts plead with them to marry for love, not convenience or safety. The characters are so likeable and the author did a great job pulling me through the story seamlessly, loving every second of the angsty feelings that develop between the two and the two orphan children Graham is guardian of. The story wraps up with a happy ending, but there are still enough loose ends in the overarching arch to keep me very excited to read the next book, that will continue their story and bring in Sophie’s sister, Olivia, as well. I highly recommend this book. It was outstanding!!!
Wow, I did NOT expect this! Michele is a new author to me, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was excited to give her book a try. Little did I know just how much I would fall in love with this story. I loved it so much that I actually forced myself to stop reading yesterday just so I could enjoy the rest today, slowly. And now that it’s over, I feel a little sad. But the good news? Not everything is resolved, which means another beautiful romance is coming, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what Michele has in store next!
In this story, Sophia is caught in a terrible situation: her father is forcing her into a marriage as part of a business deal, and she had no idea it was coming. That is, until a mysterious stranger warns her about her father’s true plans and the awful man she’s being pushed to marry. This stranger, Graham, the Duke of Warwick, fascinates her in a way no one else ever has. And that’s saying something because Sophia never planned to marry and had no interest in love. But Graham has a dangerous reputation, and people say terrible things about him, even he admits he’s not a good man. Still, Sophia refuses to believe the worst of him.
When Graham becomes her only escape from her father’s grip, they run away together. He offers her a safe place as a governess to his late sister’s children. But their journey is long and difficult, and along the way, they go from strangers to something much more. As feelings start to grow, they both fight against them. Graham believes he is too dangerous, and Sophia insists she never wants marriage. But without marriage, she is always at risk of being found and forced into a life she doesn’t want. Can she ever be truly safe with Graham if he refuses to marry her, even just to protect her?
This story is full of adventure, emotion, and unexpected twists. At first, I wasn’t sure where it was going, but oh, did it take me on a journey! I found myself looking up the locations mentioned, completely drawn into their world, especially their castle in Scotland. This book truly swept me away. For me, it was a 5-star read, and I would happily read it again. But for now, I’ll try to be patient while I wait for Olivia’s story and hopefully get a glimpse of Sophia and Graham’s future in the next book! *** I purposely didn't read the sneak peek for the next book because I knew it would make me impatient, lol.
Some favorites: The banter The kisses & Their chemistry!!! The carriage rides Pretending in Gretna Green Warming up in the cabin After the late day in the sand The ruby ring... The water fight! Lanterns, and a bed on the beach Noah and Ayla's healing Graham heart for those at Saint Kitts Sophia's heart for women's rights And SO much more... but NO spoilers, lol!
I received a complimentary copy, and this review is my honest opinion—every bit of that 5-star rating was well-earned!
An unexpected and jarring start instantly caught my attention, and I knew almost immediately that Love Unbound was going to be something different.
The pacing of this novel is swift as the stage is set, and truth is revealed. Sophia doesn’t want to be forced to marry, and Graham wants to free those that are in bondage. Essentially, they are two peas in a pod with similar motivations and desires, and when they band together, they are a force to be reckoned with.
I don’t think I’ve ever chanted, “Be together already!” so much to a novel before! All the ingredients of true love were there the entire time, but fear is an emotion most vexing, and rendered Graham in an almost constant state of emotional paralysis. It is so sad to see as it’s clear that Graham has pure intentions and a heart of gold, but it takes someone like Sophia to hold up a mirror and show him the truth.
There are some incredibly sweet moments between the pair that led to a delightful ending, but there are also scenes that are truly horrific and heartbreaking to imagine. While not overly graphic, it was still painful to read. I will never understand how people can treat other human beings like they’re less than and not show compassion to their fellow man, but I am glad that there are those out there that have the courage to fight the good fight.
I was disappointed to make it to the end of the novel with a few unanswered questions, but the author quickly made it known that the story does not end here. Thank goodness! I look forward to reading the next book in the series to hopefully get that resolution that I am craving. I enjoyed this novel so much, and I can’t wait to continue the story.
This book was fantastic. The intensity and grittiness made the moments of joy and love shine that much brighter. Some of the grit is pretty dark so make sure you check the disclosures at the bottom.
Graham steps in to save Sophie from a terrible betrothal. He whisks her away and gives her a choice: marriage of convenience or a governess job. Can they make it to Scotland before Sophie’s dad can find them? Can they heal from their pasts and forge a new trail together?
Highlights: Wading in the stream ! (So cute!) The old Scottish men were hilarious HOPE! Finding your hope is so important The way Sophie plays with the children
I love Sophie for being smart and direct. I love that she is capable and curious. I love Sophie’s love of learning.
I love Graham for being honorable and compassionate. I love that he is such a fierce protector. I love that he values all human life.
I love how both of them want to save/fix the world. 😍
““We’ve one sofa, two blankets, the fire as it is now, with no additional wood, and at least a few hours more until dawn. It is still storming outside, and I’m not willing to risk you freezing again by taking you out in the rain, so we are stuck here. The only thing that makes sense is to pool our resources— we won’t count your wild hair as one of them.”
I love being swept away into dreamy historical romances, so I was so excited to read Michelle Paige Holmes latest release Love Unbound. This book is the first book I’ve read by Holmes and it definitely won’t be the last. This book had everything I look for in a historical romance. It was so good. The story was so engaging and sucked me in from the first page. I could not put this book done. I kept thinking “just one more chapter,” but I just kept reading. The story is slow burn, but I loved how Sophie and Graham’s relationship was able to grow and develop because of the slow burn. It was so well done. The banter and chemistry between Sophie and Graham was perfect. Their pull toward each other was so strong, but they both had reasons to not get married. I loved their conversations about their feelings toward each other—they were so direct and refreshing. The story addresses issues of slavery, murder, physical abuse, parental abandonment, and women’s rights in the 1830s. My heart broke as I read those parts, but I loved how Holmes worked these issues into the story, specifically into the growth Sophie and Graham experience throughout the story. I adored Sophie and Graham. The ending was beautiful, however; the story ended with some things unresolved. Holmes has another book planned to address those issues.
I really enjoyed Graham and Sophie’s unlikely story! The unique backstory involving Saint Kitts plus the setting of a rundown Scottish castle made it even more interesting.
Graham is called upon to save a young woman about to be married off in order to merge land contracts on the island of Saint Kitts. Graham always tries to save people who have no way out but the added bonus of thwarting a dangerous alliance makes this decision all the wiser. He didn’t know what he was getting into when he “abducted” Sophie!
Sophie has no intention of ever marrying, instead focusing her efforts on improving her mind. When a handsome stranger saves her from an unwanted marriage, she quickly decides this is the best option for her future… escaping to Scotland and becoming a governess to two small children.
Graham and Sophie were both against even the idea of marrying but as they come to know each other, feelings develop quickly. And while there is a LOT of back and forth on Graham’s part, he finally listens to his heart and lets Sophie be a part of his world. I enjoyed the ending and am excited because their story isn’t done! Looking forward to the next book to tie up the plot lines and show us how our new couple are faring.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It’s so risky taking an ARC for an author I haven’t read before. When I was asked by a reader I trust, I took a chance on not one, but a two book series by a new to me author. I 100% don’t regret it. I was in a bit of a reading slump and these pulled me out of it. The first book had a lot of twists and turns I didn’t expect. I loved the journey the characters were on of managing their own trauma while figuring out how to evade a future they didn’t want. I also loved the fight against slavery in the British territory. As an American I know the history of slavery in America, but do not know much about England, except that they outlawed it before America did. I loved how the author made the people and their situations come to life. I was invested in their individual lives and the collective cause. Very fun forced proximity romance amid all the turmoil and pot twists the characters were dealing with.
The second book was very different from the first, but I loved it just as much. It could be read as a stand alone, however I believe these are best enjoyed read in order. The first book could have been quickly wrapped up, but this second book added so much more than a quick ending could have. I loved the new characters we came to know and the vastly different setting of the Wild West.
If you like historical fiction with real issues and very well written romance, this is for you. It was the perfect blend of heavy real life situations and the hope that love and connection brings.
Wow. This was my first book by Michele Paige Holmes and I was immediately drawn in by her writing style, the emotions she conveyed, and the journey of both Graham and Sophie.
I loved Sophie. She’s strong, independent, opinionated, direct, and caring. She’s eager to learn about everything a woman shouldn’t (in society’s opinion).
Graham is a broken man. Believing he’s beyond redemption, however he’s made it his mission to help anyone who is being mistreated. He’s a fierce protector and fighter. Defending the defenseless. He has a heart full of love but he’s scared to share it with anyone.
With heart wrenching and tragic backgrounds, Graham and Sophie are hesitant with each other, but find a tentative “friendship” while keeping Sophie safe from her father and his selfish, controlling ways.
There was delightful banter, especially since Sophie is very direct, and swoony tension between the two. Hello gatekeeper’s cottage.
This story does deal with some pretty heavy and emotional topics in a few instances however the main focus is on hope, healing, and love.
I thought this was a beautifully written romance.
Thank you to Michele Paige Holmes for the copy. All opinions are my own.
Wow! This book grabbed me from the start… it a startling way. Not many books start out with a conflict but this one does. The author creates a world where there is evil waiting but she has strong characters who know their place and how to fight against these wrongs. The romance is slow to start but soon grows to tenderness. The hero and heroine have troubled pasts with fathers who are not good men. The struggle to work beyond a past and fear is real for these characters but so is the victory. I was struggling with the ending of this story but I have to agree with the author the story needs another book… so I hope she hurries! I recommend this story for the wrongs needing to be made right, the love between the hero and heroine and the strength that is throughout the tale. I received an ARC copy of the book and all opinions are my own.
Possible triggers: slavery, abuse, violence. That said the author does a superb job of keeping the hard subjects limited in their descriptions.
This book can stand on it’s own, and it does have a happy ending, but there are a LOT of loose ends. There’s a book following this one, so I hope it wraps things up in a nice little bow …
I loved Graham and Sophia. Both are strong people who have loved through some serious trials. Graham has lived through abuse from his father and all the guilt of being unable to protect his mother and sister. Sophia has lost a sister to the evil schemes of her father and almost becomes engaged to a horrid, evil, powerful friend of her father’s.
Graham has committed murder, but the circumstances become clear later in the book. He carries a burden of guilt.
Sophia is bookish and extremely intelligent. She wants to continue her studies, but it just isn’t an option for her since her father only thinks of her as a pawn in a power game.
Their love story has passion, angst, tenderness, angst (did I mention angst?), healing and, eventually love.
Hard to put down and I am eager to read their continued story in the next book!
Sophie was a strong independent woman. She did not fit (or want to) in the shell society created for her. Her father who has had less than an honorable history has set her up to marry to further his standings. However the night the announcement was to be made she was saved (thanks to her mother she finds out later) from such a marriage. But then forced into another one. So she decided to run away! Graham received a letter asking him to help save Sophie. So he announced their betrothal. Of course he knew this would make her want to run. Graham took her to an estate where she would be safe from her father. She became a governess to Graham’s niece and nephew. As they got to know each other better, they saw in things in each other that they admired more than just friends. After some struggles hardships and finally joy they received their happily ever after. I was given an ARC of this book. I left the review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are my own
