The Hitcher

Rate this book
It’s summer, 1979; the good old days of pound notes, cassette tapes, punk music and free love. Steve, a second year university student, embarks on a road trip in his 1969 Vauxhall Viva. Still bearing the scars of his recent break-up with Carrie, he is on a mission to his parent's holiday cottage in Weymouth, but he didn't bank on making the journey with a sexy hitch-hiker in tow.

Faye, a free-spirited first year college student, is hitching her way to meet a girlfriend in Jersey, when fate intervenes. Two strangers, each with their own agenda, find themselves thrown together in a slow-burning, tortuous tale of boy meets girl.

The Hitcher is a cat and mouse game of love and lust, set in the late 70s to the sounds of the new wave era.

It is 1979 and Steve sets off for Weymouth in a 1969 Vauxhall Viva listening to the Buzzcocks on Bose speakers. The details are important in The Hitcher, reference points that summon up an era, a nostalgia for something lost - love, harmony, a sense of connection. Steve eats Mars bars and thinks of Carrie, the one who got away, the girl he still dreams about on lonely nights, on lonely drives down the A37. Sheena Is A Punk Rocker by the Ramones is playing when he stops to pick up the hitcher – a girl with a rucksack, hands on hips – heading, she says, for Weymouth.

Charming Man, as the author calls himself, has written a charming short romance laced with detail, a road trip with a feeling of edginess and uncertainty that keeps you turning to the pages as The Undertones blares from the Bose speakers and Steve and Faye, the hitchhiker, get to know each other. The story unfolds like an origami flower and provides an ending that may be what you expect, but not in the way you expect it.

Charming Man has to be one of my favourite sensual romance writers of all time. I first stumbled upon his works via twitter, and after reading his first short story, Night Vision, I found myself hook, lined and totally sinkered!

In true Charming Man style, he tells a nostalgic semi-autobiographical tale of boy meets girl, with all the vital attributes that put the signature stamp on his work. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Charming one’s stories, this is the notion of encounters between strangers. The chance meeting, that first eye contact and the sense of connection between the characters that develops slowly and tortuously, before he verbally spanks you with his sensually written sex scenes.

Charming Man's writing can be likened to a fine wine; his books are rich in vocabulary and deliciously intense and should be savoured slowly. With each new story that is fermented over time, (believe me, this charmer likes to take his time) his writing style evolves with each book becoming subsequently better than its predecessor. With this being his longest offering to date, reaching novella status at 29,500 words, there is so much more to enjoy.

Highly descriptive in content, with his penchant for detail, The Hitcher by far surpasses anything that he has ever written. This guy really knows how to organise his thoughts into words, allowing them to flow seamlessly from page to page, captivating his audience from the word go!

The story, set in the late seventies with a heavy influence of music from the punk era, centres around Steve and sexy young hitcher hiker Faye, who he picks up en-route, as he travels to his parent's cottage in a sleepy village in Weymouth.

True to form, Charming Man sets the scene perfectly, with the introduction of believable, yet humorous dialogue between the characters, something he is clearly very good at. As the romance starts to blossom between the two young adults, you really feel the sense of tension as Steve inadvertently falls head over heels in love with Faye, although he constantly questions if he is reading the situation correctly. The sense of anticipation as the two get to know each other, left me feeling hot under the collar, Charming Man teasing at its best!

Then we come to sex.

Not just one scenario, but several deliciously written scenes of varying themes. The thing about Charming is that he knows how to write sex in a provocative and eloquent way. He feels no need for the use of profanities or sexual aggression, he chooses his words carefully resulting in classy, passion filled sex that would give Christian Grey a run for his money! The whole story conveys a whirlwind of emotion and in the last chapter I really felt what Steve was going through, without spoiling the ending for those who are yet to read it.

So, in a nutshell, this book is heart-warming, funny, incredibly erotic and definitely worth a read! It also begs the question as to whether there is likely to be a sequel?

Nothing I could say would do this book justice! I devoured it in one sitting, not being able to get enough and found myself hungry for more and wishing this masterpiece would never end!!
Now, where do I start??
I have followed Charming Man's work from the very beginning and I'm proud to say that I am a huge fan. I have to warn you that, this man can write!!!! I kid you not when I tell you that Charming Man's writing is in a league of its own!! We've seen him evolve with each book, his writing style unique and refreshing. You know it's Charming's book from the first sentence you read, such is his way with words. I always said that Mid Air and Ariana were my favorite books of his, having read them countless times and not being able to stop raving about them. That was untill The Hitcher came along!! I have to say without a doubt that it's his best work so far!!
It takes the reader on a journey into the past... With such attention to detail, that when reading it, you actually feel you are there with the characters. A road trip full of every emotion, with witty banter that will have you laughing out loud and falling in love with the characters as they unravel and unfold before your eyes with each turn of the page... I don't want to say too much about the story as I don't want to spoil it for you. All I will say is that this book is a must read!!! It has everything, detailed descriptions, clever dialogue, a huge list of hit songs from that era that we all know and love, (I found them all on Charming Man's channel and listened to every single one of them trully taking a trip down memory lane!) And if all this wasn't enough, the erotic scenes are sooooo HOT!!! Written with such a unique way, that only CM knows how, you will feel your insides melting and so much more... A slow burning, tortures teasing masterpiece that everyone must read!!!!
Charming Man has done it yet again... Bring on the sequal!!! I cant wait!!!

I’ve been a fan of this author for a long time and have enjoyed his work immensely! I have to say that I think The Hitcher is my new favourite story by Charming Man.

The book is set in the 1970’s and the scene was set so well and the musical interjections helped the mood no end….. although I did break from reading a few times to youtube a few of the songs I wasn’t familiar with, lol.

CM does a wonderful job of getting us intrigued by the characters from the very beginning. First we meet Steve, while driving to his parents holiday cottage he picks up Faye, she is on her way to the ferry port…..

A friendship full of banter starts instantly, and the chemistry progresses between them very quickly leading to an evening and night full of pleasure for them both.

This book was so much fun to read and there is so much more I could say in addition to what I have already, but I just hate spoilers……you must read the book for yourself! ;)

Loved reading this book, as it took me back in time to when people still hitchhiked, sticking their thumb's out for a passing car, with no qualms about doing so.

Memorable hits from the late seventies thread through the story, adding authenticity to this sensual tale.

This story evolves around the two main protagonists, mainly Steve, who is on his way to open up his family seaside cottage ready for the summer rentals. The other main character is Faye, a hitchhiker Steve aquires on his journey. The story tell of how their friendship evolves with them eventually becoming lovers. With an unexpected ending leaving an opening for further stories.

Beautifully written sensual story of a bygone era. Excellent and a well deserved 5*'s. I look forward to reading more of Charming Man's work

When it comes to a detailed story with steamy under-the-covers action. Charming Man always delivers. A story that starts on a slow burn and increases in intensity. We're brought into the late 70's. The good old days of pound notes, cassette tapes, good music and free love. Steve picks up Faye while driving to his parents holiday cottage. A friendship is made. They banter back and fourth and the chemistry between them becomes magnified as the evening progresses. Where this leads is teasingly erotic. Hot and horny that's for sure. This is a flawless read that will leave you high. Quality writing by this author. I highly recommend..

Unfortunately, this was my least favorite story of the collection of books in First Encounters. It was slow to get started and I was distracted and inundated with excessive detail. Very British and was a little difficult for me to read. However, it was hot and sexy with a good build up of anticipation.
