The Unquenchable Worshipper issues a passionate call for a return to an unadulterated, first-love lifestyle of worship. In his first book release, respected worship leader and songwriter Matt Redman "The revelation of God is the fuel for the fire of our worship. And there is always more fuel for the fire. When we open the eyes of our heart, God's revelation comes flying at us from so many different angles." Open the eyes of your heart and let the gut-level message of The Unquenchable Worshipper cause you, like martyred missionary Jim Elliot, to say, "Saturate me with the oil of Thy Spirit, that I may be aflame. Make me Thy fuel O flame of God." It's time to dive into the heart of worship--will you take the plunge?
Matt Redman is married to Beth and they have five children. His journey as a worship leader and songwriter has taken him to countries such as South Africa, Japan, India, Australia and the Czech Republic. Along the way he has sung in venues such as Madison Square Garden, Wembley stadium, and the Royal Albert Hall - as well as recording in iconic studios such as Abbey Road in London and Capitol Records in LA. Matt’s best known songs include The Heart of Worship, Blessed Be Your Name, Our God - and the double-Grammy winning 10,000 Reasons. More recent co-writes include Do It Again and Build my Life.
Matt Redman is truly gifted. He is one of very few Christian worship leaders who deeply care about the theological bases of their songs. I love that he not only sings but also publishes his uplifting biblical insights. God blesses you, Matt Redman.
Short, straightforward and really gets to the heart of worship. Finished this book on the way to school and back home, all the way feeling like I might cry. On the way home a guy carrying a guitar sat down nearby, and I felt so refreshed and encouraged by this book I could imagine myself asking for his guitar and bursting out in praise... Matt Redman's passion for worship truly is contagious. Love the honesty, testimonies and great selection of verses and quotes from other hymnists and writers. Certainly a book worth reading over several times, especially for leading worshippers :)
Within the last 18 months or so, I have grown to enjoy worshipping to Redman’s songs in large part due to hearing him preach, lead worship, and articulate his theology of worship in person. But when I can across several copies of this book years ago in the church I was serving at, I overlooked the stack of small hardbacks because his songs reminded me more of cheesy hand motions and “radio hits” than what I believed true worship to be.
Redman is at present one of the leaders I respect the most in the modern worship scene. Obviously there is a lot of pressure and publicity (and surely temptation) on the shoulders of these men and women who are writing the songs of worship for our generation. Though some of his songs are still “cheesy” to me, his sincerity and heart for worship is as true as a I can discern it to be.
This book, though in parts aimed at guiding worship leaders, would be helpful for everyone to read as a devotional (which is how I have used it this month) to reorient their heart and mind back to the center of all true Spirit-filled worship: Jesus Christ. While there are slight deviations from what I might find comfortable as a Baptist (I’m tempted to mark this up to the book’s age and hope that Redman has changed in such thoughts since then), I nonetheless very much enjoyed and highly recommend this short, readable book!
This is a short and easily read book about worship, moreover different types of worship as identified by Matt Redman, not in the sense of how we put our body but by how we approach it with the mind, heart, and soul. Even though it is short it has some very valuable reminders about the core of what worship is and it is a great read for any Chrisitan who wants to know more or be reminded of how to approach the Holy.
Wow, this book is packed of many truths and treasures.
This is exactly what I needed to start the New Year. It goes right in line with what my Pastor expressed about where we were going as a church and the ways we are to practice our faith. "An unquenchable worshipper is one who rests in an underlying trust in God and worships before an audience of One." Matt Redman
It's not always when it feels good or when things are easy. But, it sure does make life's load easier when we keep coming back to the heart of worship.
True worship is not about how slow the song is. It is not even a song. It is about a heart submitted to God. True worship is living for God everyday in how we think, talk and live. It's not something we turn off and on when we feel like it. It is a consistent lifestyle.
Matt Redman's book is an amazing biography in the shaping of his modern view of what "worship" truly means. I've read this book three times over the last ten years and each time it challenges me to refocus my view of the manner in which I express honor to God.
This uplifting book encourages readers to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading when in worship. Be in worship of God, not performing. Remember the salvation and blessings of God and sing of those things. Help others to focus on God and His attributes.
Read this book for a small group study and really enjoyed it. The chapters are short and quick to read. The content is thought provoking and inspiring without being too academic or heavy in theology. Definitely challenged me to think about worship in a new way and be more mindful and present during times of worship. It has also challenged me to redefine worship so that it's not just singing songs but can be seen in other acts or times of reflection or fellowship with the Lord. Definitely recommend as a standalone read or as part of a small group study.
Thick with truths, though small in size. Wisdom from a man who has lived through the highs and lows, and has remained unstoppable and unquenchable in his devotion to God. Whether through music, or otherwise it goes back to our hearts and where they lie before The One we were created to worship. Though 'imperfect' our worship may be today, we persevere in knowing Him and His presence day by day, and look forward to the time when we will be in unending communion with Him.
My pastor got us to read this book before we started playing our instruments on the worship team. Each chapter built our foundations in our worship to God strong.
That was almost 15 years ago but I still recall many of the principles and stories. Up till today, the new musicians still have this “mandatory” reading in our church. Thank you Pastor Lia for getting us started this book, and thank you Matt Redman for the timeless principles and heartfelt stories on Worship.
Matt Redman does a good job and explaining the different kinds of worshippers that we ought to be. In different seasons of our lives, we can experience God differently but it takes a kind of understanding, recognizing, and responding to experience the fullness of God here on earth. I read this before but wanted to reread as it provides a challenge for worshippers to see God beyond circumstances but with a heart that chases after Him. Great short read!
Finding the balance between Praise and Performance. Awesome read. Would recommend to anyone who is leading, or participating in Worship at their church.
Unquenchable Worshipper! What a way to finish 2021 as more of a way to start 2022. Dive head in and immerse yourself, full Holy Spirit, in full on worship to Him Jesus our Lord.
Lewis.
If you thought that Matt Redman wrote some amazing worship songs, wait until you read this book! Redman shows he also has the skills to write a book. This short, quick read book, was very well written! The Unquenchable Worshipper: Coming Back to the Heart of Worship really did just that, bring you back to the heart of Worship!
Each chapter of this book filled in the blank to this statement: The ____ Worshipper. It ranged from Undivided, Unstoppable, Undone, to Undignified, Unpredictable, Unquenchable. Redman clearly states that the book isn't about song choices for worship services, or picking the right worship leader. He wrote the book to remind us of the true art of worship. That is isn't something we have a set time for, but something that we should be doing nonstop! That when we enter worship, it should be for an audience of One: God. Redman states that Worship is our key to connecting with God. It is how we come into his presence.
As a musician in a worship band, this book really brought me back into perspective of why I worship. It isn't to show off my skills or talents. But to lead people into seeing God's. It reminded me that just because I am on a stage doesn't take away the fact of what we are doing. Which is Worshipping our amazing, unfathomable God. It was a great read on a topic that sometimes needs addressing.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the church, whether you are in a worship band, a worship leader, or just someone singing in the congregation. It takes many great points from the Word of God. The passion that Redman writes with is so raw, true, and real. A great, quick read. Definitely a 4 out of 5 in my mind!
Matt Redman has not only written some much loved worship songs such as "The heart of worship, Better than one day, let everything that has breath" but he has the heart of one who worships. Matt share from what God has taught others and himself about worship. His challenge is to listen to the HOLY SPIRIT and worship will take place. He writes how he saw God work in lives by obeying the H.S. leads to use a Michael Jackson song. "You Are Not Alone." He reminds us if the H.S. does not lead we do not worship. Worship is more than one person leading, the numbers present, style nor age. Fantastic to hear that Fanny Crosby at the age of 8 wrote "O what a happy soul am I! Although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world Contended I will be. How many blessing I enjoy, That other people don't. To weep and sigh because I'm blind, I cannnot and I won't Just to think a blind person could write over 8,000 hymns to praise God. John Wesley had a heart to worship. Love how on the anniversary of his salvation he wrote "O for a tousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise" Also Wesley in 1744 during a prayer meeting when 100 people fell through the ceiling. Wesley says. " fear not! the lord is with us and then sings. Praise God from whom all blessing flow.
Matt Redman (Better is One Day, Heart of Worship) does a wonderful job identifying the need to bring back reverence and the true sacrifice of worship into our church culture today. He uses examples of the inspirations behind several of his songs, including "Heart of Worship" , in which he once turned off the instruments and the sound system, creating an acapella atmosphere, in which only the voices are heard. All distractions were removed to teach the worshipers what true worship is all about: Him. And so, "Heart of Worship" was born.
Redman identifies ten different types of worshipers, and each believer can easily recognize where they fit in to which category: Undignified. Unpredictable. Unveiled. Unstoppable. Unnoticed. Undivided. Unsatisfied. Unending. Unquenchable and Undone. In true worship, we should have all ten characteristics, and Redman sets the reader to that challenge.
I recommend this book highly to any worship leader who truly wants to go beyond the rehearsal and the routine of Sunday worship. I also recommend it to any believer truly thirsty to go past the outer courts and to the Holy Place.
