Amazing! Very eye opening. Praying in the language of Gods word. There are 8 genres of Biblical prayers: 1. Theophanies - visions of God 2. Psalms - language to express your heart to God 3. Prayers of wisdom - Proverbs/Ecclesiastics 4. Song of Songs - relating to your relationship with God 5. Prayers of the prophets - looking at nations/situations w a spiritual POV 6. Prayers of Jesus - the highest form of discipleship 7. Apostolic prayers - prayers for the gifts, fruit, and wisdom 8. Hymns of the Revelation- heavens perspective on life
This is a great book which definitely changed my view of prayer. However, I feel like I really need to read it a second time, when my life is less busy and I can focus better, in order to fully grasp the truths this book holds.
Absolutely loved this book. I appreciated how it draws from history and various traditions within the Christian and Jewish faiths. Having an appreciation of where we came from adds so much richness to our experience today. I agree with their thesis that many people today would like to pray, but they don't pray; it's not from carelessness or indifference, so much as from a lack of knowledge about HOW to pray. I think they build a strong scaffold for the how of prayer. I only wish they had gone into more depth on praying each of the types of prayers they recommend (theophany, psalms, wisdom, apostolic prayers, etc), though I know they outline it in great depth in their other book, Praying the Bible: the Book of Prayers. It's now on my to-read list.
This little book was not particularly 'easy reading,' but it re-connected me to God through prayer in a way that no other message has been able to for a long time. I am so glad I read it!
2nd reading, 5 years later: This time, I didn't just read it, I'm DOING it... and I highly recommend you put the practice of praying the Bible into action. It will change you!
