So, due to some space/time shenanigans, Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily meet up and team up to take out their nemeses. They've kidnapped most of Sonic's friends and robotized them to set loose on Megaman and created another Mega-Man to go after Sonic. When Sonic and the real Mega-Man finally meet, they each assume that the other is some evil mastermind, not realizing that Eggman and Wily have pit them against each other in hopes of their mutual destruction. This volume is only 91 pages, covering four comic books, so obviously, not much happens. We mainly set up Sonic and Mega-Man teaming up against Eggman and Wily. I'm all for random team-ups, but Sonic is portrayed with so much personality and Mega-Man is so dull. It certainly doesn't help that I know next to nothing about Mega-Man and no story details from the Sonic Games (I mean, there is barely a story in the original 2D ones right?). The story was fine, if fairly dry and uneventful, but the art was spot on. They didn't go for realism and they didn't go towards the artsy nonsense I see in some super-hero comics. Worlds Collide is looks like the video games. It's not overly detailed and it's easy to follow the action; I can actually tell what's happening in the panels (take notes Frank Miller!). The only real issue I have is that I wasn't drawn into the story enough to feel the need to go pick up volume 2. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my lack of a personal history with Sonic and Mega-Man games, but the story just wasn't exciting or novel enough to fuel any interest. If you grew up playing their games, I'm sure this will hit home a lot more for you than it did for me.

The start's a little weak because it has to set up and bring together so many things, but you can't deny Flynn's near psychotic glee that comes across the pages at getting to do this crossover.

(Or ignore how hilarious Eggman and Wily's evil broship is.)

Crossover books tend to follow a particular pattern, and this title involving Capcom's Mega Man and SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog is no exception. And as much as this comic does follow a lot of the classic crossover tropes, the details in terms of how the crossover gets put into motion is a great mash-up of the similarities between the two franchises. And the pairing of both Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily is surprisingly formidable.

This first volume focuses on the classic two heroes having a misunderstanding and fighting, but to be fair it was actually part of the plan of our evil doctors and not just happenstance. I wish the story had progressed into the next phase sooner, but we do get some great fight sequences between both characters that really let each shine in their own way. Now I really need to pick up the next book and finish this story.

Re-read

Part one of three. It's a shame that tween me never got a chance to read this, because I would have loved it! My one complaint is that the paper this is printed on is the cheaper paper generally saved for children's comics, although I assume that helps keep the costs down.

This was surprisingly better than I expected. Ian Flynn did a good job capturing both Sonic and MegaMan and their respective worlds, and intermingling them. This first volume sets the story up, with Wily and Robotnik meeting (and forming fast friends; their interactions in this first volume especially are great, as they build off of each other rather than bicker), the two worlds interacting, and the requisite 'battle to a standstill' between Sonic and MegaMan. Everything is lively and colorful, with Sonic throwing out lots of quips while MegaMan plays everything more straight. This is very much the starting point of the story and isn't a standalone volume by any means, but it does set a fun Act I.

The highest praise I can put on this book is that it is exactly what I would have wanted from such a crossover when I was twelve. Clean, detailed art, dialogue that gets on with the messy business of exposition without being embarrassed about it, and a story that knows exactly which tropes to moosh together.

It's pretty much exactly what you're probably expecting it to be, but it's still fun to watch it unfold.

Overall for a first book, this book did very well. They explain what's going on, they have codes (I will never know what they mean), and action packed illustrations!
