Shocked and unsure if he really is the father, Jayden doesn’t know what to do but for one thing if he is the father he will do right by the baby and will be there for his future son. When Jayden finally comes home from his military tour, he and Annie finally decides to meet face to face to discuss the future of their baby. But due to an unforeseen certain of events, Annie and Jayden’ s first meeting comes to an abrupt halt when an accident occurs. Will Jayden finally get to meet the mother of his child?
Unexpected Chances by S.L. Schiefer was a quick read and a story you find yourself easily immersed in. Though the storyline felt sometimes rushed, I enjoyed the book. I look forward to the next installment and can’t wait to find out what happens next with Annie and Jayden.
When I received a copy of this book to review from new author S.L. Schiefer, I was honoured. This release is her very first book, and I’m excited to be on this journey with her - now...let’s talk about Unexpected Chances.
Annie Reynolds is a quiet, reserved girl content for the most part to live her life in South Carolina with her job and three best friends. “That’s all a girl needs, right?” Annie has relocated to South Carolina after losing her parents in high school. She has no other family and has grown up and survived on her own since that fateful night.
One night, while out with her girls, Annie throws caution to the wind and engages in a one night stand with a man who gives her the best sex of her life. Annie leaves without ever getting the name of her mystery man. She only has the memory of what he looked like and the incredible things he did to her body to take with her. Through a series of very fortunate, somewhat predictable, but incredibly entertaining circumstances Annie finally discovers the identity of her mystery “Adonis”.
Jayden Miller is a Marine deployed in Afghanistan for his fourth deployment when he gets a message from Annie that changes his life forever. He has no memory of their drunken night together, the night before he shipped out for his latest assignment. Annie and Jayden continue to correspond via Facebook over the next few months trying to put together the pieces of their night together. Plans are made for them to officially meet each other when Jayden returns home to see if there is in fact anything between them.
The one discrepancy in this book that did drive me a little insane was Jayden`s age. In the early chapters of this book it was stated that “at thirty-two, I’m a little older than most of the guys here” when describing his deployment. Later in the book a comment is made by Jayden that “this really isn't how I imagined my life going at twenty-seven.” This was only a small difference but I found that it took me away from the story as I immediately had to return to the beginning of the story to determine if I had read this wrong. I was totally immersed in the book and these characters and this just broke the moment for me. I had to go back and start the connection again trying to picture Jayden as a 20 something boy instead of the 30 something more mature character that I had been picturing in my head all along.
This book is incredibly emotional and intense with one of the most frustrating cliff hangers I have ever experienced. I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come out. I need to find out what is going to happen. I absolutely loved the characters of Jonah, Jayden’s younger brother, who is also a Marine and quickly becomes one of Annie`s best friends and sources of comfort while waiting for Jayden to return home for their “re meet”. This is a short book and a quick read that I devoured in one sitting. This is a great start to this new series and for a new author with some amazing characters and a storyline that will suck you in and leave you wanting more and wanting it NOW!!!
Annie and Jayden meet, have mind blowing sex and then disaster happens. Jayden is deployed to Iraq and Annie is home not remembering who it was she slept with. This book is written from Annie and Jaydens POV, which I LOVE. This story about losing one of family and finding another is very heartwarming. DOES END IN A CLIFFHANGER...there's your warning. :)
**I received a gifted copy by the author in exchange for an honest review**
Oh, my God! This was a quick read but I LOVED it!! I'm normally not a fan of novellas or serials because they're too short for me. BUT - this definitely changed my mind. I love, love, loved this book! The story line caught me immediately and the characters - oye. I'm definitely in love with Jayden AND Jonah. I cannot wait to read the remaining novellas. Great job to S.L. on her debut novel - but I hope your willing to reach this level every time, because now I expect nothing less! ;)
**Gifted by the author in exhange for an honest review.**
This story is about a girl who has a one night stand and gets pregnant with a guy who has been deployed, but before his deployment, he goes out to a bar and meet a girl. Got drunk and had sex with her, but too drunk to remember each other. I din't feel comfortable reading about a certain part that bug be the most and wanted to throw my device.
Annie loves to run as her escape from the life she calls "not so perfect." She is very independent, does everything on her own, does not rely on anyone for anything. She lost her parents when she was eighteen and became independent from then on. The beginning of the story was her having sex with some stranger, not just any type of sex, it was very HOT. Now, she finds out she's pregnant and does not want to get an abortion but she doesn't know what to do with the baby since she has no clue who the father is. Since she doesn't remember the last guy she was with she slept with.
Jayden is in the marines, since it runs in the family he followed his father's footsteps. He receives an email from a chick he didn't know while he was away on a mission. He does what he wants, comes and goes as he pleases. But that will all change when Annie, the girl he slept with enters his life. Everything changes for him and his ways.
Annie meets a guy named Jonah after her doctors appointment while she was sitting on the bench since she was a little overwhelmed after the check up. She broke down while talking to this random guy named Jonah, since she has no idea who the father of her baby is, it caused her to break down and couldn't hold anything in any longer. Come to find out this guy, meeting Jonah, brings her close from her search for her baby's father.
This screams chaos written all over. OMG. This book made me cry, laughed and angry. Something tragic happens to Annie and it almost broke my heart. And be WARNED, it had a major CLIFFHANGER. OMG! Ms Schiefer you are mean! Next book please, like NOW!
When Annie had a drunken one-night stand with a guy she met at a bar, she didn’t want to know his name or anything else about him. That is, until she finds out she’s pregnant with his child. When she’s exhausted all efforts to find him, she’s prepared to raise their child on her own. Fatefully, Annie meets the brother of the man she’s looking for, and they become friends without knowing of their connection. I must say that I liked the deep friendship between Annie and Jonah (because she definitely needed a support system), but I felt it was a little rushed. Or maybe it was her “I’m always looking for a friend” line that she uses too often that made it seem less realistic initially. Also, who tries to hook their brother up with a preggo chick? That’s just weird, Jonah.
Unexpecting Jayden is dealing with yet another deployment when he’s hit with the news that he knocked up a girl during a one-night stand that he doesn’t even remember. I don’t blame him for his frustration in the beginning and admire his later willingness to accept it and try to be there for Annie and the baby. He seems like he’ll make for a good book boyfriend; though, it was hard to make much of a determination because the book was shorter than I had anticipated.
There were a lot of editing issues with this book, and the writing was a bit elementary. *I DO NOT MEAN THAT IN A DEROGITORY WAY.* I simply mean that it’s obvious this writer is new, and that, with continued writing, she should make leaps and bounds as a writer. I thought the story was good, and it definitely kept me intrigued. That’s why I was disappointed in the length and the mega cliffhanger. I wasn’t ready for the story to end when it seemed like the best was just about to begin with Annie and Jayden’s anticipated reunion. I’d also like to add that I LOVED that the author did a great job at keeping the povs separated. Switching povs without some sort of indicator confuses the reader and is one of my pet peeves. Ms. Schiefer kept the povs separate and clearly defined, and I commend her for it. I look forward to continuing Annie and Jayden’s story in the future and to seeing the growth of this new author.

This book starts off with hot sex between Annie and Jayden Miller, it was a one night stand that Annie will never forget. One night stand isn't a regular thing that Annie does, but that one night changed her life forever. When Annie left Jayden's room, she left without even knowing his name. All she knew was, he was hot and the sex was the best she had ever had.
After a few months had past, Annie started to feel sick and finds out she's pregnant. That same day she met Jonah Miller and became fast friends with him. He went with her everywhere and became her go to person. Jonah was with Annie on all her appts and was always happy to do it. One day she finds out while visiting Jonah and his family, that Jonah is actually Jayden's brother. Once she tells Jonah about her and Jayden, he sets everything up to have them chat/email each other while Jayden is currently deployed in the Middle East. Jayden shocked with the news not believing he is actually the father. He didn't know what to do, so he asked for a paternity test.
When the day finally came for Jayden to return home, he and Annie decides to meet face to face. That day both were very nervous, not knowing what to expect. Jayden waited for Annie at a restaurant and she never showed up. After leaving the restaurant a very unexpected thing happen.
...And that's where the book had left me, shocked of how it ended. I cannot wait to read the 2nd book to find out what happens next with Annie and Jayden, I am hoping I won't be waiting long. ;)
This book is a really short read, but I really enjoyed it.
Oh wowzer what a opening this author has in store when you first start reading this novel. The delicious opening also has some ramifications that result from it that takes Annie on a search for the one she can not remember as in his name with barely remembering that night. This search also leads her first though to meeting Jonah who will be a key to finding who she is searching for. At the time all she knows is he is military. She wants a father not just a baby's daddy. Jayden is quite the character that this author has in this novel. I say he does handle it better than most men would of when he finds out he is to be a father. The author takes you on this journey with these two interacting with each other with a relationship of a type growing long distance before meeting. On a different footing with out the alcohol daze to color the meeting like the first encounter they will need to meet again once he comes home which will be soon. The author does a splendid job of giving this story the foundation needed to build up to the appointed time of meeting face to face. But then this author does throw a curve with one that will keep you on the edge of your seat with some consequences you do not see coming. They do meet but with more drama than they already have going on this author leaves you with a cliff hanger that takes you running to the next novel just because you have to know what happens next. Received a arc for a honest review.
Unexpected Chances begins when Annie finds out that something happened after a one night stand. Now Annie feels alone in the world, but she has to try to find the guy that she had the one night stand with. The only problem is she doesn't remember his name...
Jayden Miller has been living life to the fullest. He's a marine away from home, and had recently enjoyed a night out on the town before he was shipped off. Some how some way fate decided to bring Annie into his life. These two will have to re-meet in order to work some things out, but that all changes when something unexpected happens!
This was a very short story that included lots of drama, and some major crazy unexpected things. The plot line was very very interesting and I really enjoyed reading this one. The only issue I had with it however was I felt we didn't get enough emotions from the two main characters. Well at least not enough emotion of them together. I do want to continue reading the next book to find out what happens next though!
I loved the characters from the start. I enjoyed reading that when Annie finds herself in a situation she handles it well. I was happy to see that Jayden, while handling the situation as expected in the beginning, comes around later. I did not se what happened next coming at all. Which I am glad for. I do not enjoy books that become predictable. I am glad the author put this in there to surprise you!
I like coming across authors that are not afraid, or against putting certain things in their books that others won't. Even with them not being enjoyable situations. I feel that when written right it adds to the story and makes it how it needs to be. That being said I feel this author pulled that off. Everything she wrote worked well together.
I'm glad I had the chance to read this and will definitely be reading her next books. I would recommend this to others as well.
Annie & Jayden. Well Annie starts getting her life on track in South Carolina after losing her parents after graduation. She works at a doctors office. She and her friends go out one night and Annie get a bit drunk and goes home with a guy she doesn't know. Well after fainting at work she is told she is pregnant. She admits that she doesn't remember the guys name. She meets this guy [Jonah] in a park and they become friends and he helps her and one day he takes her to meet her to meet his parents and while looking at family pictures on the mantel she sees a picture of the guy she slept with. A few days later she tells Jonah about seeing the picture of his brother Jayden and tells him that he [Jayden] is the father of her baby. Jonah contacts Jayden who is over seas on deployment and tells him about Annie. Now if you want to know more you will have to get the book and read it!! This is book 1 in the Unexpected Series.
l loved how this author was about to make me feel that that Jayden and Annie belong together ...when that only was a one night stand and have been communicating through emails...I love Annie and Jonah's brother-sister relationship ..I would like thank the author for not force a love triangle and having the brother fighting over her..I was refreshing to see a healthy friendship between the opposite sex w/o romance. l love how Jonah is Team Jayden and Annie before they are and is cheering them on to be couple..I hope he gets a book as well.I 'm looking forward to see Jayden and Annie relationship grow..I looking forward to their journey.
Never again will I ignore a novella. This is the second one this year that had me from Page one! Annie decides to walk away from some of the best sex she ever had with the thought "...nagging feeling that something wasn't right. There was something I should be remembering."
Jayden's story enters. He's your hot, sexy marine on his 4th deployment. Trying to finish the last couple of months with keeping in touch with his family.
This story is short and hot. There's so much in this novella and can't wait to read the next one!
I received a copy, and WOW I am so glad I got a chance to read it. It was beautiful, emotional, hot and overall just a wonderful book. It is a VERY fast read, I really like S.L. writing style it is remarkable. The story line was intriguing and very interesting. I love Jayden and Annie, and their relationship they had. It was very complicated. I don't want to give the story line away. But this book is a must read. You will love this book.
Wow. Just amazing. Was hooked from the first paragraph. Just couldn't put it down. Had me on an emotional rollercoaster ride from start to finish. The chemistry between Annie and Jayden is sizzling and just leaks from the pages. There is laugh out loud moments and sobbing moments but totally worth reading.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review for A Pair of Okies Book Blog. I enjoyed the authors style of writing, it was a short, but really good fast read. A night out just to let loose, turns into a lifetime of changes. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
I fell in love with this story within the first chapter. I read it in o e sitting and couldn't tear myself away. this is so different from what's out there and it is refreshing...I need more now please :)
Totally fell in love with this book. Loved Annie, Jonah, and Jayden. As a Marine mom it holds a special place for me and now have to have this in paperback. Excited that there is more to this story and can't wait to read.
This is the first book of this series and so far so good. Annie and Jayden have a one night stand, that leads to a pregnancy, that starts to evolve into a relationship. Many bumps along the road, but seems promising.
I really liked this one! Obviously I read it in one sitting. I can't wait to go and get the rest of the books. There's a major twist I don't think anyone could have predicted! Well written, interesting storyline, and great characters!
The heroine was so adorable and lost. The pregnancy brought this on and I truly believe that Jayden wouldn't have settled without something pushing him to do it. I liked how the characters pulled together in the end.
I loved this quick read. I can't wait till the next book to find out what happens with Annie, Jayden and baby Josh. I look forward to reading more from this new talented author.
What can I say, The story line was amazing the characters came to life in the book, for me anyways. The writing was awesome can't wait for the second book!!
