Tenser than tense is how I would describe this book…..and evocative, dark, surprising and shocking

When I saw the title and already knowing from previous reads from the author it would be good I settled down to what I expected to be a comfortable tale of new neighbours, bit odd, good arguments and scandal and maybe a letter or two through the door with a hefty dose of playground Mum gossip

WRONG
on every level

And I can’t say why or what Viola, fiesty, uncompromising and yes nosey, finds out about her new neighbours nor what her insistence at getting to the bottom of it causes her but it’s nothing like I had imagined

Turns the tables on ‘new neighbours’ books good and proper and then some

I can only advise to read and be more and more perturbed as is Viola as to what is happening and as things get more out of control the book becomes something that will mean you will probably, no definitely, never presume about new neughbours again

Good, really good and highly original

Just when I thought it was over, something else happened! I was drawn in to this story, as I had to find out what was going on with “The Family Next Door.” This author kept you guessing about this for a quite a while, as you come up with your own theories as to what’s going on.

Viola has new neighbors, a couple and their young daughter Mirabelle. When Viola meets her and her mother Wendy on the day that they move in, they immediately seem odd to Viola and Mirabelle is the strangest of them all. The creepy vibes that she continues to get from this family makes her more curious as well as worried about what this family is hiding. I don’t think I was ready for the amount of secrets that were uncovered throughout this book. Well paced, suspenseful and tension built story.

When new neighbors move in next door to Viola, she quickly rushes over to welcome them to the neighborhood. It’s a strange encounter as Wendy, the new neighbor, doesn’t open the door fully but only enough so she can squeeze outside. Wendy tells Viola it’s just her and her husband, Rhys, that have moved in - but as Viola is heading back to her house she sees someone in the upstairs window and it isn’t Wendy or Rhys.

This book brings all the creepy and unsettling vibes. It was a fun and quick read as you just have to find out what is up with this odd little girl in the window. It’s one strange occurrence after another and Viola can’t help herself, she has to find out what is happening.

The story’s mysterious plot and fast-pace make it a perfect read for anyone who enjoys popcorn thrillers. I liked the shorter chapters and saw Viola as the catalyst that pushed the story forward. You’ll want answers just as much as Viola does and will come to see her as your ally - the person who will figure out the answers you seek.

A one sitting type of read that you won’t be able to put down.

This was such a wild read, full of twists and turns! This book reminds me of why I mind my own business 🤣 The story follows Viola, who is happy to warmly welcome the family that has just moved in next door. However, very quickly, Viola realises that there is something very wrong with her new neighbours, but she can't help trying to get to the bottom of it, no matter the danger to herself... after all, there is a child who needs her protection...

The writing is full of tension, and I found myself willing Viola to close her curtains and lock her door, ignoring the nefarious goings on next door but bless her she just had to know! Viola is a retired children's social worker and can't help herself from being curious.

The characters are well written, especially Mirabelle, who is a very complex little girl. I liked that we got to see things from her pov at times throughout the story. The author did an excellent job of making the atmosphere feel very unsettling. The plot of the story was gripping, and some of the twists were unexpected. It is also well paced with plenty of odd happenings to keep you hooked on the story.

I think fans of psychological thrillers will love this one!

With thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest review, which I'm leaving voluntarily.

4.5 stars!!!

In "Perfect Neighbours," Viola's new seemingly perfect neighbors at Number 33 harbor dark secrets. As Viola investigates their strange behavior, she discovers lies and a disturbing web of secrets. The family next door, including a hostile father, a mother losing her grip on reality, and an eerie daughter, have hidden a secret inside a locked room. Viola's curiosity turns into obsession, leading to a twisted game of cat and mouse where she must uncover the sinister truth before becoming the next victim.

This captivating book grabbed my attention right from the beginning. I am thrilled to have come across this gripping read that is both easy to devour and difficult to set aside.

Throughout the story, I found myself constantly speculating about what was happening, eagerly anticipating the conclusion as I struggled to unravel the mystery. The writing was superb, leaving me in a state of bewilderment, constantly questioning what would happen next. A sense of unease lingered within me until all was revealed.

The characters were intricately developed, each possessing a likable yet slightly twisted quality that added depth to the narrative. This book offered a unique reading experience unlike anything I have encountered recently.

If you enjoy a thrilling, chilling, heart-pounding tale of cat and mouse, then this book is must-read. The plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the very end. You will be left in awe of the author's skill in crafting such a well-executed story.

Thank you, Bearnard's Books and author for the ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you @booksprout for my complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

When new neighbors move in next door to Viola, a retired widow, she eagerly goes to introduce herself. However, she leaves with a lingering unease about the dynamic between Wendy, the mother, and her 8-year-old daughter, Mirabelle. Unable to shake her concern, Viola finds herself increasingly drawn into their lives, worrying for Mirabelle's safety. But soon, the family begins to push back, revealing a darker side that Viola never anticipated.

MY THOUGHTS: This gripping domestic suspense novel had me turning the pages, wondering whether Viola could save the day. Viola is a relatable and trusting protagonist, making me root for her throughout the story. In contrast, the other characters are shrouded in mystery, with their secrets gradually coming to light. The twist at the end is unexpected, keeping readers guessing right until the final moment. If you enjoy domestic suspense, this book is a must-read!

This is one of those books where you want to tell one of the characters - "Nod if you're okay."

Viola is recently widowed and loved the neighbors she had before. So as she watches the new neighbors move in, she's curious about the family dynamics. Her first encounter with the daughter is, well...weird. But 8-year-olds can be weird, right? The mother seems fine, but there's some hostility between her and her daughter. And then she meets Rhys, who is every arrogant, controlling husband you never want to meet.

But one day, their front door is unlocked. Viola just wants to assure herself the house is safe. She's definitely not being nosey. She's just looking out for the family. And that's when I wanted to scream DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE!

What did Viola find out? And was she caught snooping? You'll just have to read this book to find out!

Thanks to Love Books Tours for taking me along on their tour with an advance reader's copy.

And THIS is the reason why I mind my damn business and keep to myself in my little village 😭 guys the ending???? WTF???? Okay but before we get to that, Charlotte Stevensons new book is a wild ride of emotions. Firstly, I absolutely love that we have an older woman as our main character and it made me realise that I have rarely read many books where this is the case 🥹? I dont know why but that fact alone made me a lil emosh and got me thinking about all the mature readers who may get sad that they arent really represented?😭 ANYWAY back to the book itself- I loved our main character Viola- she really made this book for me and how she was written was *chefs kiss* 😘 In a super quick nutshell without spoling the book, Viola has new neighbours and lets just say their family dynamics are far from normal…. We have a creepy ass child, a husband that acts too big for his boots and a wife who seems just well…. disengaged. What I can say for sure is Viola is going to wish she never got involed with The Family Next Door 🫣
This was an incredibly suspenseful read, with some super creepy moments, irritating men and a strong female lead who demands answers. And listen there isn’t much I can say about the ending without spoiling it- but it really is ‘WTF HOLY SH!T’ jaw dropping 🥲 I would highly recommend to thriller fans 🫶🏼 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me 👏🏼✨

This one had me fidgeting constantly 😂🤣 so suspenseful and full of surprises. Viola has brilliant instincts and such compassion for Mirabelle that you really want the best for her and for things to just go well.

There's so much packed into this that you can't put it down. I thought there was something sinister going on but didn't guess what it was or how it'd end. Certainly didn't end the way I hoped and I'm not entirely sure it has really ended in a way Viola would have envisaged or liked.

Quite liked this even if I wanted things to be different. Dark but somewhat fun read

OMG!! What pure garbage!

First off, I think it’s important to note that the description of the book is not what the book is truly about. Yes, it’s about a family that moves in next door to an older woman who has lived there for many years and naturally wants to greet them with good intentions.

What is missing is that this about a cult like situation that the family is trying desperately to hide and the horrors that they inflict upon the main character Viola.

It is creepy, it is brutal and it’s just bad writing and a very bad story that is beyond comprehension.

I can’t remember the last time I read anything this bad and I am sorry I can’t return it. The author should be ashamed.

I absolutely loved this creepy, exciting thriller and I couldn’t put it down! I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next and what was going on. The storyline was exciting throughout and the characters were very interesting. I liked hearing from the viewpoints of both Viola and Mirabelle which really enabled me to understand them, their personalities and perspectives. I have enjoyed all books by this author and can’t wait to read more from her in the future.

I received an ARC from Bloodhound Books for an honest review, thank you, and all thoughts are my own.

Having read both of Charlottes previous books, I knew I would enjoy this. The previous releases from Charlotte have both been very different so I was grateful to read an ARC of The Family Next Door.
From the start, the one of the main characters, Viola has you gripped by her nosy but welcoming persona. She is extremely likeable but at times, frustrating, when you are almost screaming at her to stop and think before she gets involved (no spoilers!). You immediately warm to her, with the book tackling gently, the subjects of grief and loss.
When the other main character, Mirabelle makes an appearance, you are instantly on edge thinking nothing good can come from this friendship.
The story is not what you think it will be, there is suspense, a little horror, family relationships, loss, friendships, a little bit of everything that will keep you reading. There are moments when you heart will be racing, moments when you feel sad, and moments when you feel happy about the friendships. There will also be characters you dislike, but learn to love!
You know you have read a great book when you are sad to finish it.
Looking forward to Charlottes next releases and thank you for the opportunity to read and review before release.

The Family Next Door is a psychological thriller that will have you questioning how well you truly know the people living next door. The book's premise is immediately intriguing, as it follows a family that moves into a new neighborhood and quickly discovers that something is very wrong with their seemingly perfect neighbors. The plot is a masterful blend of suspense and twists that will leave you breathless.

The author does an incredible job of creating a gripping and atmospheric world. The tension builds with every turn of the page, and the plot is a wild ride that you won't want to get off. I was completely captivated by the story and the characters, and I found myself unable to put the book down. I did not expect the direction that this book took, but the ride was so enjoyable. Such s wild plot with even wilder characters. The pacing is perfect, and the twists are so well-executed that I never saw them coming. Such a mind-bending, thrilling ride that will leave you wanting more.

Here is my review for The Family Next Door by Charlotte Stevenson

This was a deliciously twisty psychological thriller for me. Full of suspicion and curiosity, it hooked me right from the start. Viola had lived in her home for approx forty years and she had always got on with her neighbours. She now had a new family moved in next door. They were called Wendy and Rhys but as she walked away from their home, she saw they had a little girl which Wendy hadn’t mentioned. That seemed strange to Viola. The next day, the little girl was in the garden and said her name was Mirabelle so Viola introduced herself. She realised there was something strange about the girl but she wasn’t sure what it was. She had worked in child social services before retiring so had some experience but this was something new to her. When the family went out later that day, she realised they had left their front door open. She went over with the intention of shutting the door but thought she had better check that they hadn’t left the keys indoors and that the house was empty. There was no sign of any keys or anyone in the house but she did find a locked room upstairs. That evening Rhys came round to confront her and she explained her actions. She realised she didn’t like Rhys and that there was something very strange going on in that house next door. Rhys invited her to dinner and how he said it, she knew she couldn’t refuse although she wasn’t happy with it. This book was exceptionally well written and kept me turning the pages as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It was a really interesting plot and had been well thought out. The family next door were very strange and there was something going on but what could it be? What was going on with Mirabelle? She wasn’t like a normal child and she clearly didn’t like Wendy. What was their relationship? This book was a fantastic read and another good book from this author.

This was my first time reading Charlotte Stevenson, and all I can say is WOW! Tense, chilling, and completely engrossing, The Family Next Door had me hooked from the very first page. If you’re looking for an original, dark, and shocking psychological thriller, you won’t be disappointed.
The pacing is spot-on—medium to fast—with things spiraling out of control early on, only to grow even more intriguing as the layers of mystery are peeled back.

Viola, a retired and widowed older neighbour, starts off as your typical well-meaning ‘nosey neighbour,’ but she quickly becomes tangled in the unnerving lives of the family who’ve moved into Number 33.

At first glance, everything about Rhys, Wendy, and their daughter Mirabelle appears picture-perfect. But soon, cracks begin to show. Wendy seems fragile and detached. Rhys is brimming with hostility. And Mirabelle? Let’s just say this eight-year-old gave me chills—eerie and unsettling in the best way.

What I loved most was the sense of unease that simmered throughout. The dual POV from Viola and Mirabelle added depth to their characters and heightened the suspense. I was constantly speculating, eager to unravel the mystery behind the locked room and the disturbing secrets hiding within Number 33. Just when I thought I had the answers, the plot would twist and turn in unexpected ways—keeping me firmly on the edge of my seat.

The writing is evocative and atmospheric, leaving me with a lingering sense of dread as I raced towards the shocking conclusion. This isn’t your typical ‘nosy neighbour’ thriller filled with petty disputes; it’s far darker and more gripping, offering an experience that felt truly unique.

If you’re after a creepy, heart-pounding tale with intricately developed characters and an unpredictable plot, The Family Next Door delivers. It’s easy to devour, impossible to put down, and will leave you questioning everything until the very last page—and beyond.

I’m getting a bit worried. The house next door to us has become empty after all this time. The current owners lived there for twenty-eight years – we’ve been in ours for thirteen of those. It’s a spooky old house and we don’t yet know who’s going to move in. I just hope it’s not Rhys, Wendy and Mirabelle. If it is, I’m definitely not popping round for a cup of tea.

I don’t quite know what to make of Viola. I think we could be friends, but I probably don’t want to live next door to her either. She’s too nosy (she says she’s not) and suspicious. There is no way I would have gone into someone’s house if they left the door open – well maybe just the hall before closing the door – but not snooping around upstairs. And pretending to water the plants so I can spy on them? Maybe…

The Family Next Door is creepy as hell. They are a weird bunch and Rhys is a real chauvinist, but are they as odd as Viola thinks they are? Not having had children of her own, I think she also finds Mirabelle’s behaviour stranger than I would have done (with two sons and four granddaughters in tow). And her pre-retirement job working in social services probably makes her see stuff I might have missed.

However, things only get worse. By now I would have confided in someone and sought help. But Viola is that person in the horror film who goes down in the cellar while we are all yelling at the screen ‘don’t go down there!’.

At times her behaviour made me feel really uncomfortable, and I despaired of her most of the time. But it’s one of those stories where you have to keep turning the pages even though you want to hide behind the sofa. Thank goodness she’s gone home….oh no, she’s gone back. Viola what were you thinking! The Family Next Door is full of suspense and surprises, even though you may want to drag her back to safety and reality.

Many thanks to @lovebookstours for inviting me to be part of #TheFamilyNextDoor blog tour.

You know when you read a book and you start to look over your shoulder as you're reading it even though you're in the comfort of your own home on a nice cosy couch with a cup of tea beside you - you know it’s going to be a good one. Viola paints a picture of the perfect neighbour. She keeps to herself but she's also aware of her neighbourhood. Her shock, dismay and fear becomes something that lives in you as she meets her new neighbours and realise instantly something isn't right at all.
Viola is widowed, and her compassion is always directed to those around her. When this compassion turns into disquiet and an uneasiness that cannot be quashed, it starts many twists and turns that are so unexpected. The young daughter, Mirabelle, from Number 33 narrates several chapters which are rather short but very telling of a small child that has either been manipulated or has become a master manipulator herself. Every time Viola seems to reach out more to Mirabelle, you start to think that something is very wrong with this child, at the same time you start to question and think about Viola and her state of mind.
The desperation and the despair when Viola finds out about her husband's secret past is more shocking when that past comes back very quickly to haunt the present.
I loved how there was the constant feeling that there was a sinister cult-like presence in this book, especially how they were reflected back on Viola and her state of mind. She was made to feel more isolated from her friends, she felt like her husband was not as loyal to her as she thought, and she was disrespected and threatened for asking questions and showing care and consideration. The sense of desperation in all of the characters was strong, with confusion used to manipulate them into hurting others, and themselves.

What a ride! This is the first book by this author that I've read but it definitely won't be the last. From the very start, I was drawn into Viola's story and couldn't wait to find out what was going on. Widowed Viola's life is turned upside down when a new family moves in next door. An innocent visit to welcome the new neighbours rocks Viola's well ordered life to the core. At first, all seems perfectly normal with the family, but it doesn't last long. There's something not right about the behaviour of Wendy and her daughter Mirabelle, yet Viola feels herself drawn to them and soon begins forming a bond. Little does she know what danger she has put herself in and what will follow. The characters in the story are so expertly written it feels like you know them, especially Viola. It's easy to understand her motives in wanting to protect Wendy and Mirabelle from the dangers that she perceives around them. Mirabelle is also a great character; her different personalities are so well betrayed. She's a very complex character and had me completely suckered in. There are definitely some dark parts and characters in this book, making this a compulsively chilling read. It's packed with loads of surprising twists, shocking secrets and revelations and absolutely no way of predicting that ending! This book is an incredible read and will shake you to the core. I simply can't recommend it highly enough. Five stars all the way.

I really liked Viola as a main character, nosy, determined and never lets things go. When the family move in next door, suspicions are already on high alert with the title of the book and it isn’t long until you meet the first of three characters Wendy, Rhys and Mirabelle. It didn’t take me long to feel creeped out by the eerie movements and stares. I liked the chapters from Mirabelle perspective, they weren’t often but when they made an appearance it added even more anticipation to the read.

There’s so many more characters that make an appearance but it’s easy to keep up to speed with who is who. I didn’t like how certain characters were trying to make Viola be perceived to her and the readers and I like yelling at Rhys and Duke all the time. I didn’t expect what unfolded and who the family next door became to be. I loved the reveal of one thing after the next including hidden secrets from those close to Viola. The ending was what made it for me, it isn’t what I expected at all. Shock! I didn’t find it as quick as a read as I’d hoped but I really enjoyed the final quarter of the book and would recommend it.

The secrets we keep: A dark and twisted tale
I’ll start out with wham, bam, WTH ma’am? Wow! What an insidious treat! I'm still reeling from the experience. This dark and twisted tale had me hooked from the start, with its complex web of secrets and lies that kept me guessing until the very end. The story follows Viola, a quiet retiree whose seemingly perfect family moves in next door at Number 33. But as Viola digs deeper, she uncovers a disturbing web of lies and secrets that threaten to destroy everything. Nicola F. Delgado's narration is exceptional, bringing the characters to life with her remarkable vocals. She expertly weaves together the complex plot, drawing me in with each word. The cast of characters is bizarre and intriguing, with each one more unsettling than the last. I highly recommend "The Family Next Door" to those who enjoy dark, twisted tales with complex characters and plot twists. It's a chilling psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last moment. With its twists and turns, it's a wild ride leaving me breathless. I'm so impressed with this book that I'm already searching for more by Stevenson and Delgado.
I chose this book via my monthly Amazon Music subscription for May.

If you want the guarantee of a brilliant psychological thriller, then the combination of Charlotte Stevenson and Bloodhound Books is definitely a winner. I always know when picking up one of Charlotte's books that I'm going to get a twisty tale that will keep me guessing and also be totally chilling.

In The Family Next Door the 'totally chilling' element is definitely little Mirabelle. Woah, what a creepy child she was. I both loved and feared her in equal measure. I did find her change of heart near the end of the book to be slightly out of the blue, but of course there were more twists to come.

Whilst it was clear from the beginning that the new family at number 33 were odd, I definitely didn't guess the reason for that. I can't really say much more without spoiling it for any one who hasn't read it. But if you're a fan of creepy families with more secrets than a secret diary then grab a copy, settle down and enjoy.

While The Family Next Door is an excellent psychological thriller for the most part, it did leave me wanting when it came to the ending. Unfortunately, I can't explain my reasons without giving away too much of the story. Suffice it to say, you might as well sit back and enjoy the ride the book provides because I doubt you will be able to decipher where it's headed. Be prepared to suspend disbelief and not have all of your questions answered because It's that kind of book.
Despite my objections, I still enjoyed the book very much. Some of the characters are twisted, dark, and downright weird, but who doesn't like to visit those types every once in a while?
I recommend this book for psychological thriller fans, even if nothing was tied up in a pretty bow by the time I finished. It di managed to keep me engaged for the entire story.
I received a review copy from the author via Bloodhound Books and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.

🏠 WARNING:
This house is protected 24/7 by a nosy neighbour!

🏠 Pick this up if you like/don’t mind:
📌 psychological thriller
📌 mind bending plot that will keep you guessing
📌 fast paced
📌 dual POVs
📌 dark/ disturbing characters
📌 old and “nosy” protagonist ( who is the nosiest of them all? )
📌 unexpected turns and twists
📌 creepy/ unsettling vibes
📌 family secrets
📌 quick/ addictive/ binge worthy read

🏠 WOW! This was an extremely addictive book that kept me hooked from page 1. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in two sittings. Personally I don’t like nosy people but I found myself rooting for the protagonist as I was desperate to know what was going on. Talking about the ending it came as a total surprise. Though it failed to give proper closure but in my opinion it couldn’t have been better. The ending was “chef’s kiss.”

🏠 Recommended ! Thanks to the author and love book tours for ARC.

Woah. The ending was so jam packed with twists! I was so not expecting that. The book seemed like any other thriller with a family who just moved in but they have some strange quirks. Viola, the widowed neighbor, becomes intrigued by this family. She learns she should have never gotten involved.

I like how Stevenson really made you feel connected to Viola and to Mirabelle. There was not a second that I doubted the little girls intentions. I really felt as though she was a normal little girl who just needed some extra love.

I think for an even bigger twist, making Mirabelle out to be robotic (like the movie Megan) or secretly possessed would have been a great way to end on a high note or even to start a second book that focuses on Mirabelle and Viola living their life together.

One thing I do think I am still confused about is if Doug and Rhys are really evil or if they were just under the orders of Mirabelle?

Overall it was a great book!

The Family Next Door was one of those books where I knew from the first chapter it was going to be an addictive unputdownable read. The suspense started strong, continuing to build & build as the pages turned.

I loved the main character Viola, yes she's the typical nosey older neighbour twitching the curtains & noticing everything but she's also a genuinely caring woman who's particularly drawn to 8 year old Mirabelle, she frustrated me no end at times and I questioned her actions but it all fell into place at the end.The characters were well developed and written really well, particularly Mirabelle, a very unique & wildly eerie little child who was a huge part of this story.

This was everything you could want in a psychological thriller, tension filled with the author creating the perfect unsettling atmosphere that was dark & creepy at times, the twists kept coming and I was surprised until the very end.

A must read for fans of psychological thrillers.

This gripping and disturbing novel seems to be a battle between good and evil. There is no doubt at all that Viola is both kind and good. She is a thoughtful and caring neighbour, who wants to welcome the family next door. They, however, are a complete enigma, from the young mother, Wendy, to the child, Mirabelle. As for the two men, the father and grandfather, they certainly do not seem to embody the sort of qualities that Viola experienced with her own, now dead, husband. Little by little the mysteries and inconsistencies deepen, until Viola takes it upon herself to investigate. Twist after twist ensues, and, just when she seems to have got a measure of the situation, another unexpected turn challenges Viola’s grip on reality. This is a thoroughly good read, but don’t be surprised if it gives you nightmares!

Retired, widowed Viola is settled in her life, new neighbours move in and events trigger an obsessive curiosity. Viola is especially concerned for eight-year-old Mirabelle. Will Viola ever get to the truth around her strange new neighbours?

Charlotte Stevenson two previous books The Serial K*ller’s Son and The Guests were both deeply psychological blurred reality novels - The Family Next Door is more plot / reveal but it’s still unsettling, and maintains her excellent character writing. Viola and Mirabelle are both complete, real and believable.

Viola’s caring nature makes her concern for Mirabelle all the more poignant, and the twists and reveals more impactful.

It’s quite an unusual book, but it kept me reading and involved. Well worth a look if you like something a bit different. I think fans of Karen McQuestion’s The Moonlight Child would enjoy it.
