A detailed examination--complete with full-color, cutaway illustrations--of the frontier forts built by the Roman legions exposes the routines of daily life as a soldier on the frontiers of the Roman Empire.
Fiona Macdonald studied history at Cambridge University and at the University of East Anglia. She has taught in schools, adult education and university, and is the author of numerous books for children on historical topics.
A Roman Fort is the fourth book I’ve studied in the Inside Story series which was written for older children. The intricate drawings, combined with the text, provide good information on what life what like in a Roman fort and to be a Roman soldier. I had not appreciated how well developed the Romans were. I think that other adults will also learn from this book and others in the series. They are providing a historical understanding of the time and place that I did not have.
