Eve Appel Mysteries #2

Dead in the Water

Rate this book
Sabal Bay consignment shop owner Eve Appel is fit to be tied—family tied. Just as she is basking in the warmth of a renewed relationship with her long-lost Uncle Winston, disaster strikes. He and his less welcome companion, Darlene, have come for a visit, and their request to participate in one of rural Florida’s most popular tourist activities, an airboat ride through the swamps, ends with her uncle being shot in the head. The killing looks suspiciously like a mob hit. Turns out Uncle Winston was “connected.” Was he simply a bag man, or something more? Who is Darlene, really, and how did Winston acquire three Russian stepchildren, one of whom has been kidnapped by yet another mob family—this one Russian? Winston claimed to prize family above all else, but what “family” was he talking his niece Eve, his relations by marriage, or his mobster employers? When Eve’s best friend Madeleine is kidnapped, Eve doesn’t know where to turn. Her mob-boss buddy Nappi Napolitani? Her new Miccosukee Indian friend, the long, lean, and luscious Sammy Egret? Her ex-husband, Jerry, who is in Nappi’s employ? With two mob families on her tail and her boyfriend, PI Alex Montgomery, mostly away on assignment, Eve has to act fast. Before whoever wrecked her car and left her to the mercy of the alligators finishes the job they started. Dead in the Water is the second book in the Eve Appel Mystery series.

Cows, Lesley learned as a child growing up on a farm, have a twisted sense of humor. They chased her when she went to the field to herd them in for milking, and one ate the lovely red mitten her grandmother knitted for her. Determining that agriculture wasn’t her career path, she took a job as a stripper, book cover stripper for a publishing company, that is. Now after many years as a college professor and university administrator, she has returned to the world of books and uses her country roots and her training to concoct stories designed to make people laugh in the face of murder. “A good chuckle,” says Lesley,” keeps us emotionally well-oiled long into our old age.” She is the author of several cozy mystery series and numerous short stories. This is a fun and easy to read mystery. Clotheshorse Eve seems a bit out of place in Florida cowboy country, but she and her best friend Madeleine run a successful consignment shop. In addition to a very good mystery, there is an interesting love triangle between her PI boyfriend Alex and Sammy Egret, with her ex-husband making things even more confusing. The unique characters and fun plot kept me interested until the last page.

I picked this book up for a challenge, which is the only reason I kept with it. Eve Appel and her friend, Melanie, own a clothing resale shop, but Eve spends more time investigating crimes. This whole story was farfetched and ridiculous, Eve seems very naive and brainless, and the parts about Sammy seemed pretty racist.

Parts felt a bit strained to make international organized crime in this small community an exciting adventure. The author is really good and I'd like to read more of her books

Lesley A. Diehl in her new book, “Dead In The Water” Book Two in the Eve Appel Mystery series published by Camel Press gives us a new adventure with Eve Appel.

From the back cover: Sabal Bay consignment shop owner Eve Appel is fit to be tied-family tied.

Who is Darlene, really, and how did Winston acquire three Russian stepchildren, one of whom has been kidnapped by yet another mob family-this one Russian? Winston claimed to prize family above all else, but what “family” was he talking about: his niece Eve, his relations by marriage, or his mobster employers?

They say that you can choose your friends but not your family. This saying is taken to the extreme within the pages of this book. First there is Eve Winston’s real relative. Then there are the Russian stepchildren related by marriage. And finally there is the “mob”. Someone wanted Winston dead. We know it wasn’t Eve. And if Eve doesn’t figure this all out soon she might wind up like her uncle. “Dead in the Water” is a wonderful thriller as the tension mounts as Eve is trying to identify the killer. “Dead in the Water” is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. Ms. Diehl has provided us with a great character in Eve Appel and I am already looking forward until the next book in this series comes out.

Eve Appel is a consignment shop owner in Sabal Bay, a place in hot Florida. Eve is quite happy to hear from her uncle Winston and pleased to have him visit her after a long time. She is quite surprised to see him accompanied by his girlfriend, Darlene, but glad that her uncle is not alone, as he is not the youngest anymore either.

The couple are interested in taking part in various activities, and what really peaked their curiosity was the popular airboat ride through the local swamps.

As nice as the visit started, as badly it would end: uncle Winston gets shot in the head and dies instantly. From the looks of it, uncle Winston might have been involved with the wrong people, resulting in a mob hit. But why?

Overall this is a well crafted cozy mystery that has action, adventure and detective work involved through a few interesting and fun characters to read about. While reading the book I got intrigued enough by Eve and her list of quirky friends that I’d like to read more books in the series. Especially about Eve’s Indian friend.

Starting off with yet another cozy mystery read that I really liked! The main character Eve Appel is great. Eve is the owner of the Sabal Bay consignment shop. As with any mystery the setting is key. This consignment shop will give readers a lot of stories. I can see people buying, people looking to sell and then the consignment customers. Im sure they are going to add to what I hope will be a long series. When Uncle Winston and his "lady friend" come to partake in the airboat rides through the swamps, Eve is a little reluctant. When her uncle gets shot, well this is the beginning.

The focus of the air boat ride is a new and interesting event for me. I knew nothing about it and found it fascinating. The author does a really good job setting up Uncle Winston as a mobster. He apparently was well connected, leading to rumors and speculation. There is a lot to like about this background.

If you are a mystery lover like me, this is for you. Starting with Eve and her Uncle and then the kidnappings, mob relations and Darlene OH its a great book!

Dead in the Water by Lesley Diehl is a terrific addition to the Eve Appel series.

Eve Appel is ornery, contrary and a delight. She wants answers and she will not be denied. When her uncle is murdered nothing is as it seems and there are answers just waiting to be untwisted – in the swamp with alligators and snakes. From murder to kidnappings to the mob, Eve sees it all.

This story kept me entertained during a time when I needed something to distract me from everyday issues. Filled with action and humor, along with wonderful characters, I highly recommend this story. Guaranteed to “take you away” for a while.

I can’t wait for the next story in this series.

"Dead in the Water" by Lesley A. Diehl is the second book in her Eve Appel mystery series and, like the first book, I didn't want to stop reading until I'd read the last page. Ms. Diehl has a incredible talent for creating unique characters and intriguing plots. I highly recommend this consignment shop mystery!
