I received this book through Goodreads First Reads, and am grateful for the opportunity.

I found that this book had some interesting plots. The psychic element and its government connections was intriguing. More than that, I enjoyed Alessandro's search for Martine's secrets, as it reminded me of other archaeologically-focused stories.

However, I am afraid that the two plots did not really converge that well. They seem like they would have worked best as two separate stories entirely. I kind of liked how they coalesced near the end, but the arcs did not mix well. Alessandro's hunt is more scientific and historical, while the psychic arc is more action-focused and supernaturally-oriented. Despite some links, the two would have worked better as separate books. For instance, given the whole emphasis on psychics, I had expected the Ravilla incident due to some sort of psychic disturbance, with the cave being a foci for the power. Instead, while it seems that psychic visions may have inspired the work, the artifact itself was perfectly normal, making the discovery of the cave anticlimactic.

Furthermore, a number of things are left unresolved, or are only given brief mention of resolution at the end. We don't have a solid answer for the artifact, and the discovery of several others simultaneously across the world just comes out of nowhere. The government conspiracy issue ended anticlimactically earlier, and there was never a firm resolution on that end. Plus, the AVALANCHE terrorist group, for all its importance in the plot, never actually becomes directly involved in the story, reducing its connection to the story.

Even so, I did like the characters. Alessandro was my favorite, but others such as Kellen and Lorna were interesting as well. The backstories were intriguing, and the plot kept me interested, despite the unanswered questions and foiled expectations at the climax. The book was a good read, and I am interested to see if you have any other books published or upcoming.

Kellen Rand is searching for a missing Indian Shaman, January and Lorna Novak is searching for her niece. They join forces and are soon involved in a covert black op involving the CIA and the Russians. Psychic research from the cold war is at the heart of several missing persons and throw in some jihad bombers and you have a page turner. This is the first book by Rey Rainer that I've read and he has great style and interesting characters. I also love the island settings and American Indian culture he mixes in. Enjoy this great read.

I won this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy on the condition that I give a fair and unbiased review.

The setting to this novel was beautiful. The author did a fantastic job portraying the environment. The characters, both primary and secondary, had good backstory while still leaving enough to the imagination to allow the reader to speculate. The pace of the story moved a bit quickly for me, and I would have enjoyed a first person's perspective of the historical storyline. I don't know if a sequel is in the works but I know that I felt the ending was a bit rushed.

I really enjoyed The Find by Rainer Rey and am truly impressed by how the author integrated disparate beliefs and wove them into a story of faith, without disparaging any of the beliefs that were conveyed. The mastery with which some would consider the occult is blended with science is quite good. The story is steeped in government conspiracies with plenty of action. It is a tale of greed, corruption, martyrdom and second chances. While the book has a definite ending, no loose ends, I can see the opportunity for a sequel, which I sincerely hope the author takes.
