Being a psychic, you would think talking to the dead was a walk in the park. However, it’s not always that simple. The hooded specter haunting me is one I’ve been dreaming about since I was a kid. One day, he appeared in my bedroom mirror. Good. Evil. I don’t know what his true intentions are.
Enter Jackson, ghost hunting show host extraordinaire, and my ex, to save me from the big bad ghost.
From there…well…it’s been a world wind of complications. My house burnt down. I’m being stalked by an ancient evil and gotten myself back into the world of being a ghost hunting psychic. Jackson dragged me, along with a few other psychics, to a ghost town wiped off the map called Death’s Dance.
From there things went from bad to worse.
Death's Dance is Book One of the Deathly Encounters Series
Crymsyn is a multi-genre author of horror and paranormal romance novels.
Her experiences as a psychic has given her a lot of material to use in her books. She currently resides in Charlotte, NC with her hubby and her dog Briar. Her guilty pleasures are horror movies, peanut M&Ms, and cheesecake.
I met the author at Mysticon in Virginia and decided to give her book a try. I really enjoyed it because it has an interesting and original premise. There were a few times when the main character had reactions that I didn't feel were appropriate for the situation, meaning I thought she definitely would have been more upset about what happened. Also, there were a few grammar and usage errors but not enough to keep me from enjoying the story. I would like to read the next one in the series.
Paranormal adventure with touches of sheer horror and some very intriguing backstory—a backstory that stays hidden and still isn’t quite revealed by the end—Crymsyn Hart’s Death’s Dance is a fast exciting read, a pleasingly complete story, and a cool start to a series that leaves the reader eager for more. Kerstin, psychic medium with some very strange dreams, finds herself meeting the stranger from her dreams and wondering just who or what can be trusted. There’s an old boyfriend who doesn’t seem entirely trustworthy, and a grim reaper, maybe, plus dead bodies and a televised ghost-hunting series with mediums who might or might not be authentic. The producers, of course, are in search of that great show to pull in the viewers, then Kirsten finds herself drawn into something more.
There’s plenty of mystery as well as action in this novel, plus some uniquely intriguing mythology. And there’s just the right level of romance. The character’s voice is convincing, her abilities are very authentically portrayed, and some thought-provoking touches not only set up the series but set the reader up to seek out the sequel. Coolly imagined, convincingly dramatized, and a really fun read.

I’ll admit straight away that this isn’t the sort of book that I’d usually go out and buy – as a supernatural thriller, it contrasts with my usual library of alternative classics and modern fantasy. That said, I actually really enjoyed it, and although I did spot the occasional typo, there weren’t enough to make me mark it down. You get what you expect, when you support an independent author.
The story-line itself is fairly strong, and although you can spot the occasionally convention here and there, Hart is experimental enough to introduce her own twists and turns and to breathe some life in to a genre that I thought couldn’t be improved. I was also impressed with the sexual tension between the characters, and the relish with which she writes about the twisted deaths of some of the central characters. It scared me a little bit, and I’m pretty sure that that’s what she was aiming for.
Oh, there are better books out there, but there are plenty that are worse as well, and if you’re in to the genre then I’d heartily recommend it. Even if you’re not, try it – you might enjoy it, and I sense that Hart would be delighted to welcome another supernatural reader in to the fold.
Death's Dance is a promising start of a new series. It has all the ingredients (yeah also the corny ones) for a good horror. Unfortunately it also has a big flaw.
I read Death's Dance in one sitting, at night. I like to read these books at night and this one shoud be read at night. I truly liked the world created by Crymsyn. Trying to figure out if the hooded specter is good or evil, the ghost town, the ex çoming to 'the rescue', some "don't do it" and "don't go in there" scenes, it all worked. All the right vibes for a Horror.
Unortunately she included romance in the mix and in this case it just did not work. Romance and Horror rarely go together and it is a big risk to combine them. You immediately get a PNR vibe and that does not fit in a Horror.
I am however looking forward to the next instalment in this series. I am curious to how this series will proceed. Will it be Kerstin and Than again or will others be added in the mix? Azrael maybe?? I do hope Crymsyn can keep it in the Horror scene, because with Death's Dance she showed she is on the right way of giving us a scary story.
In the last few years, ghost hunting shows have become very popular. Whether it is a sign of the general public having a more open mind towards the paranormal or simply a previously unfulfilled demand finally being met, it seems like these shows are now all over television. It raises the question if all of these paranormal investigators truly believe in their mission or if they are just putting on a show for ratings. Whether or not the investigators believe does not change the reality of the situation in which they place themselves. It may even be that they end up serving as pawns in the plans of some greater force. This idea is explored in Crymsyn Hart’s Death’s Dance.
I really enjoyed reading Death's Dance, it was a wonderfully written story that at the beginning I thought was going one way but by the time we get into the town Death's Dance goes another way all together. I enjoyed the character Kerstin the most, and her relationship with Than. I did not expect how Kerstin would connect with Death's Dance and thoroughly enjoyed being surprised by the end. The author was able to create characters that had a unique voice and I felt like they were real and cared about them. Overall I enjoyed reading this and hope for a sequel especially after the end.
This is one of my favorite genres and I'm happy to say that Hart did a great job. Her description just brought ever scene to life for me. I was so drawn into the story I had a hard time putting it down. The mystery is brought in right from the start and keeps you guessing throughout the story. I can't wait to read more from Hart! If you're looking for a good paranormal read you should grab this one.
