A wild retelling of Snow White from a highly imaginative writer

“Revenge is a dish best served with screams.”
“I didn’t trust myself not to ask for the butter one minute and spread it on her the next.”

The tale of Snow White has never been so rich nor dark, so full of surprising twists and turns or so very spicy as in Marianna Palmer’s latest—her 21st —book!
For starters, though it retains many of the iconic elements of the original tale—the huntsman, the mirror on the wall, the dwarfs, the poisoned apple—it is nothing like a children’s story. It’s full of evil deeds and violence as it tells the story of Staeci, a poor girl who rises to become Queen to King Eryke.

The story is told from the dual POV of Staeci and Eryke. Their personal tales and timelines shift back and forth as we learn of the amazing histories that brought them to this point.

Staeci is bent on rising to power, to keep herself from being vulnerable and abused as she was in an early marriage, and to serve the interests of the poor. Eryke’s tale is of a kind blonde man forced to unleash the mighty Bear within, though he longs to return to his peaceful roots. Palmer constantly pits dark against light, evil against good throughout the tale.

(SPOILER ALERT) And, in the biggest role reversal of all, a man—King Eryke—is the Snow White of the story—blessed to have the coloring of his dead child, with skin as white as snow and hair as black as ebony. It’s a story of the price we pay for power, but it’s also a love story (with a deal of spice!)

Palmer takes us through a labyrinthine plot involving good and bad fairies, a vicious ignoble husband, various blood-soaked battles. Through it all Staeci, cast as the Wicked Queen—and urged on by Reflection, her constant mirror companion—pursues a path to power, while falling desperately for the very thing she must vanquish to attain it—King Eryke.

Snow White Blood turns the original Snow White on its head, making it far juicier and more interesting in the process.

I was grateful to receive an Advanced Readers Copy of the book.
