The life-affirming memoir of Lindsey Burrow, the working mother of three young children who has inspired the nation through her selfless commitment to husband Rob Burrow (CBE), the rugby league legend she cared for throughout his heroic battle with motor neurone disease (MND).
*A Pride of Britain Award Winner*
Take A Memoir of Love, Family & Never Giving Up explores the deepest reserves of resilience, personal sacrifice and hope that Lindsey Burrow exhibited on a daily basis when her family’s life was upended by the terminal MND diagnosis. Juggling her day job for the NHS as a physiotherapist, with round-the-clock care for Rob, who couldn’t move or talk, and could only eat with Lindsey’s assistance, she simultaneously raised her brilliant young family and helped to raise awareness for MND. The efforts of Rob, Lindsey and Kevin Sinfield have raised over £15 million for charity.
In 2024, Lindsey presented her debut ITV1 documentary, ‘Who Cares for Our Carers?’ which highlighted the emotional and practical hardships faced by thousands of her fellow unpaid carers, whose hidden work is worth an estimated £162bn a year in the UK, the equivalent of another NHS. Told in Lindsey’s characteristically humble, charming and inspirational style, Take Care explores her life and shares her honest experiences of finding strength in the good and the bad times, in order to offer readers and families hope to overcome challenges in their own lives. The book sheds a light on the many families across the UK who care for their loved ones with little support. Finally, the book is a rousing call to action, for us all as a society to take better care of one another.
‘A story of compassion, perseverance and love. By sharing her story, Lindsey is shining a light on those who are dealing with incredibly difficult situations, putting other’s needs before their own and making great personal sacrifices every day. I hope this book provides all those going through their own challenges with some comfort and optimism, and that it inspires us all to look out for one another’ Prince William
‘(Lindsey's) modest memoir is humbling but also rousing, its title as much a call to action as a valediction, urging us to do more for those who give their society’s unpaid carers.' Guardian
‘A remarkable, moving memoir...(Lindsey) is easily a match for Rob’s fiercest opponents in terms of emotional strength, selflessness and resilience’ Times
I read this book in one sitting, I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much when reading a book. An honest memoir of caring for someone with MND, a heartbreaking story to read about Rob’s journey and Lindsey and the children as they navigated life during that time. Definitely an important reminder to make the most of life as you don’t know what is round the corner.
This memoir by Lindsey Burrow is so heartfelt and warming. The love she has for Rob flows from the pages and you can’t help but feel sad for her incredible loss. However, her memories of their life together are wonderful to read. Funny , moving and emotional and I could not put it down. As a retired social worker I have seen carers like Lindsey devote their lives to looking after and caring for their loved one. It takes a huge toll on carers, physically, mentally and emotionally yet they always show such resilience in their care and support. Lindsey highlights this perfectly in this book and is a true inspiration to all carers out there. Her children are right that they have a very special Mum that their Dad was immensely proud of.
Wow!!! What a truly inspirational family they are. Having followed Rob Burrow in his rugby career and then his fight with MND, no words can describe what pain this family have endured. Many tears were shec reading this book but it’s highlighted MND for all those other people suffering with this cruel debilitating illness. A must read.
I have just finished listening to this audio book and wow what an inspiring story of resilience, determination and love. Yes it’s a sad story but it is peppered with funny moments and so beautiful narrated by Lyndsey herself.
A well written , thoughtful and caring account. Very moving and so real. I laughed, smiled and cried throughout reading. Lindsey takes the reader on an absolutely beautiful journey through her life with and the beginning of love without Rob. I am full of admiration for her.
