Pretty good compilation of a three book series by a new-to-me author that mostly writes m/m books. The story is actually quite good, so a 4-star for that, and that's the main basis of my rating. There are some typos and misused words here and there, but not many.
Maritza is a young woman of mixed heritage that came from a broken home. She idealistically joined the Peace Corps just after she graduated from college (free tuition/board for foster home kids) and suffered through, several unhappy years of work in Africa with AIDS victims. After her term of service ends, she moves to Manhattan with her friend from the Peace Corps to find work, as she also acquired a substantial bit of administrative experience with her Peace Corps tenure. Her 'friend' immediately moves off with some guy to another state, leaving Maritza alone in a tiny apartment. Still she is enthusiastic about a new job and a new beginning.
Then one night, a large man appears in her apartment and shoves a needle into her neck. When she wakes, she is over 2,000 years in the future, and is slated to be the 'bride' of an alien Lord...
The smex scenes were maybe a '3/liked it' for me (which is not bad), but I have read *a lot* of erotica, so it has to be *really* well-written to impress me much anymore... so my bad, but IIWII. If you only read erotica now and then, you might rate that part higher (but avoiding smex scenes in romance novels these days is not an easy task). At least there isn't any of that silly KA 'whispering' stuff, but there are a lot of sounds that are pretty consistent in all of these scenes. And, I didn't find myself skimming them, and they aren't overly long, which is a good thing (according to Martha). I have read more arousing (to me) space alien smex from Laurann Dohner (Zorn Warriors and Cyborg Seduction), Kaitlyn O'Connor (Cyberevolution), Jaid Black (Trek Mi Q'an series) come immediately to mind - and some others, but this isn't a reason not to buy this book.
There are questions here about simple right and wrong, physical cruelty, womens basic rights, civilizations in peril of extinction, religious zealotry, etc. that enhance the story quite a lot. For instance, should a race of people surrender to a more powerful race of beings, or basically, commit race suicide to avoid that? Are 'conquered' beings 'less' than an older more advanced group?
Just A Note: At the end of this boxed set is another novella (the one about a Vanquished Goddess) but it's from another series. It's also sold separately on Amazon, but the whole novella is actually with this book, so you will be returning the Kindle edition of Vanquished Goddessfor a refund if you buy it... just saying, because I thought there would be more to the story... nope.
Almost a 5 star read and I'll give my reasons at the end of the review.
Quick Rundown: Half Puerto Rican Chick who just got out of the Peace Corps wakes up one day to find a horned blue alien guy in her teeny tiny NYC apartment. She wakes up to find herself in a completely white room with a video screen and gets her induction into "Human Abduction From The Past by Alien Race for Breeding Purposes". With a very rude servant to the Master Dude, she knows she has to tread a fine line for her survival and any possible happiness. Turns out it several hundred years in the future and an alien race has taken control of what's left of Earth and been abducting breedable women from the past that would have had no children nor made any contributions to society that would have effected history or the present. Master Dude is one of 7 Council Members that run their planet and the planets they have concurred. Her position is a high one but steeped in past rules of how women should be subjected. Can she love this Dude? What kind of life is there for her in this world?
Characterization: This was done pretty well. You get a good enough feel for the characters but more so about halfway through. I will say that I wasn't buying the vibes between Chick and Dude for a good bit but eventually the author was able to make it flow well and I ended up loving these two together. The first sex scene had undertones of dubious consent but like I said, the author fixed that pretty quickly. The Big Bad here is kind of an unknown that I'll reference more in the plot. Secondary characters were very well fleshed out as well.
Plot: While at first glance, this isn't a new plot. But once you get further into the story, this becomes an issue of loyalty and of a person being in an untenable position. That is what ended up making this story different from others in the genre. Chick was constantly pulled in different directions. Should she trust her husband? Should she keep certain things secret? Should she escape or help others to escape? What are the repercussions for making any particular decision? This is what made the book so exciting for me. There was a very high level of suspense that had nothing to do with battles but with "what is the right decision?" The sex scenes were probably the BEST I have ever read. I'm so tired of hearing the same, "ahhh's", "oh's", and "Oh my god's" that are in every sex scene. This author incorporated more varied expression of passion some of which are my own. It was so refreshing and made it real. I won't go into detail because it'd make me sick to my stomach to think them out loud let alone type them out but this author nailed it! The sex was also good and dirty at times and sweet, too. I'd read more of her work but this was the only full novel length book I've seen and I hate short stories so I won't read those.
What I didn't like: Before you can even read the first line, there's an almost desperate plea by the author not to pirate her work. I don't mind a couple lines about how piracy is illegal but this went way beyond that. The author claims that "Piracy has absolutely devastated my ability to make a living (in bold font)" along with "I wouldn't go so far as to ask this if it didn't REALLY, REALLY HURT ME!" These longs along with many others make up half a page and like I said, right before the first line of the book. I'd just like to say as someone who has never read a pirated book or watched a pirated movie, I was offended. I didn't want to read this book to immediately get drawn into your own bullshit. I read to escape my own bullshit so don't bring me into yours! I even went so far as to look up, "how to combat ebook piracy" and everything I read said the same thing over and over again: "Don't make it personal or make threats", "Be kind, respectful and non-antagonistic requests to have your pirated books removed from sites". From what I've read, it seems like any ebook author who claims to make their sole living off of this business, regular work by them is necessary to get their pirated works taken off sites and should be incorporated into their everyday work load. Besides all that, I don't know why the author thinks that making such dramatic pleas to readers who have bought her work thinks that that message is going to any way deter the people who do it. It comes off as challenging them. This is one reason why I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. The message completely took me out of the zone I was in to read the book. It was a couple chapters in before I could forget it. And again, I don't read stolen works nor watch stolen movies so I'm not the culprit but for some reason the message made me feel like the author was shaming me when I paid for the fucking book in the first place. The other thing that I didn't like about the book was the dubious non con at the beginning. While I realize this sounds awful, I enjoy dubious non con in my books but this particular one wasn't sold to me. In summation to this rant, if writing these books is your sole source of survival then maybe you should get another job or at the least, put in some time a couple days a week to combat the issue you are having. I saw some very good ideas of how to start on ebook piracy on "wikihow.com". Check it out and leave your readers out of your personal problems.
First ever. Just couldn't keep going. Read 100 pages and was bloody frustrated enough to throw my tablet and we all know they are so not made for that unlike books. He was so big that she just had to be drugged the first time they had sex? It was cool taking single people with quiet content lives because they were 'wasted lives'? And all the whining from all the characters, plus the blatant acceptance by Maritza of anything Elentius does as ruler being fine because she just doesn't understand his culture/society. Finally decided finishing it was not worth ripping out all my hair.
Surprisingly good because there is a plausible moral dilemma keeping things interesting. I was impressed: It was truly not clear what the correct course of action might be for our heroine. For that reason, you could take away the foot-long alien ding-dong and you've still got a fairly compelling story. There were some other clever elements I won't spoil here. All three novellas in this "box set" form a short novel and you definitely want to read 'em straight through to make a complete story.
I read book 1 and then bought the 3 book set. The story definitely improved in book 2; although it ended abruptly. Not even a cliffhanger in my definition, but more like a resumption of an ongoing conversation when book 3 started. This is a Mars needs women type story.
Maritsa is captured to be the wife of Lord Elentinus, an alien who is the overseer of an enslaved Earth 2080 years into the future. Lord Elentinus' species is dying out, but humans are compatible. With the ability to time travel, the aliens kidnap women who lack descendants and who do not have a significant impact on Earth's future history, while encouraging current Earth inhabitants to increase their population in order to make more eligible mates for them.
This story has been done over and over, but what I liked about this one was the heroine's acceptance of her helplessness and determination to make the best of her situation. She tries to accept her position as wife and breeder and as a result, it enables her to begin to enjoy her new life and fall in love with her husband, while doing what she can to constructively suggest changes to improve the lives of other human women in her situation. Even after the Hero drugs her to ensure she cannot fight the first time they have sex, she accepts her situation after the H informs her the drug's purpose is to relax her so that she will have less pain, since the alien's reproductive organs a bigger than that of humans. I found her character strong and liked her. The Hero could have been very different, but he too fell in love with her and treated her kindly.
One thing I didn't like was some of the language used to refer to female sexual organs--a small thing, but it was not romantic nor standard dirty words one is used to.
Better than just filler. 3.5 stars. Recommended if you like these types of stories.
Book 1 - 3 stars When a human girl is made captive on an alien ship to breed babies it only makes sense that she would go along with it.
I'm not sure why I gave this 3 stars. It wasn't exceptionally bad but it wasn't really good either. I would put it more into the lines of being kind of hokey.
Book 2 - 1 star This one just went WAY out of the ball park. Now I am starting to doubt my rating on the first one. The whole erotica throughout the book was just ......
Book 3 - 2 stars Not as irrationally horrible as the second book but still pretty close. Finished series but barely. And OMG the ending, I was like "WHAT?!?!?! Wait, what is happening?!?!?"
i enjoyed the short series. I liked how the characters interacted. They fell for each other quickly , but the outcome would have been the same regardless, because they were put together for marriage and procreation purposes.
Very enjoyable , good plot line; you really get to know the characters and feel for them? Loved everything this book offer and read it from cover to cover without putting it down. A must buy and keep them coming.
