I’ve never felt like I belonged anywhere in this world…until a package shows up on my doorstep, just for me. An invitation to the mysterious and enigmatic Nexara Academy. They say I have a hidden potential, but surrounded by magic and being the only human in a school full of mystical creatures, it’s undeniably clear.
I’m not welcome here either.
Living at the very bottom of the food chain means there’s danger around every corner, down every hallway—and recently, I can’t help but feel it’s targeting me. But I have bigger problems than that.
The infamous Shadow Brothers have taken an interest in me. Damon, Zarek, and Nox.
Besides being a constant thorn in my side and a wicked desire I can’t consider, their presence has awakened many dark secrets, mysteries that should’ve been tucked away forever. Now, I need their help to confront them. Because if I don’t, this insidious power will stop at nothing to destroy me, and the realm, as we know it…
And my fate, intertwined with the fate of Nexara itself, is about to be sealed, locked in a destiny that was never mine to choose.
The first installment in the Nexara Academy series, this new dark academia fantasy features a headstrong FMC who is more capable than she thinks, slow-burn tension with three ruthless yet damaged love interests that she won’t have to choose between, and a high-stakes hunt to uncover the evil threatening the realm. The Fractured Veil ends on a cliffhanger—consider yourself warned.
I’m sorry, WHAT. There is NOOO WAYYY I just power read this book for THAT ENDING. I am DISTRAUGHT.
The Fractured Veil is a dark academia fantasy with a very nice WC/RH trope. Featuring a gothic academy setting, magic, and tons of secrets and mystery. You’ll be asking yourself throughout this book, WTF is going on? But just HOLD TIGHT. We are all gonna learn together!
The Shadow Brothers? Delicious. Shadowy. Broody. Assholes. I loved them. Gobbled them up. I would take 10 of them. Especially Nox. And Zarek. I’d love to be the middle of that sandwich. 🙂↔️
Thalia? MY GIRL. I want to be her. She had a very tragic upbringing with a hint of mystery that I’m hoping we truly dive into more in book 2. Her mouth? Hilarious. The banter and flirtation in this book is unmatched. Had me blushing and clutching my pearls. Her unyielding determination to prove herself as anything but fragile with the splash of vulnerability is magnificent. I truly love her as a FMC.
The plot. It’s there y’all. But we have some world building to get through and TONS of questions need to be answered. But I promise y’all, it’s gonna all unfold. I feel it in my pinky toe. Overall, I give this lovely book a 4.5⭐️ out of 5. I was kept on my toes with the characters, the detail rich writing style that was almost very poetic, and of course the lovable asshole MMCs. In regards to spice, this is very slow burn and very tension filled/angsty. What we do get towards the end is basically an appetizer for the 5 ⭐️ main course you know you’re fixing to indulge in. I can NOT wait to see what book 2 holds after feeling edged in this one. So for spice I give 1.5🌶️/5.
—————————————————————————————— I was honored to be selected as a ARC reader for “The Fractured Veil” by B.R Vazquez. I was given a ebook copy in return for a honest review. I attest the review above is honest and completely my own. Thank you so much to B.R Vazquez for the opportunity!
Im usually not a girly whos into the academy setting, but the blurb sucked me in and i had to read it and im SO GLAD I DID! The banter?🤌🏼 The slowest burn?🤌🏼 The character development 🤌🏼
Thalia, was an amazing FMC. Shes been through so much in her life but DETERMINED not to let anyone walk all over her including the Shadow Brothers, the walking legends at Nexara Academy. She grew so much though out the book while stuggling to understand why a human with no magic would be invited to Nexara Academy for the Gifted. Her determination to prove herself not only to everyone but to herself, especially with her new found shadows! 👀 Her resilience is ASTOUNDING!! Her relationship that bloomed with El was so wholesome and i love that for her!!
The Shadow Brothers.
Nox, Zarek, and Damon. Dangerous, Broody and mysterious. I ATE these boys up They had it out for her from day one, icy glares and snide comments, but all of them felt a undeniable pull to her without knowinging why. Zarek knew from the beginning and leaned into the pull, while Nox and Damnon fought it. Damon most of all, that man is STUBBORN 😂 These boys had me swooning by the end of the book🥰
However, their is some room for improvement!! This was descriptive but almost to describtive if that makes sense! Overall this is a great first debut novel and im so excited to see what happens to Thalia and her boys come book 2!
ALSO THAT CLIFF?? I was on the edge of my metaphorical seat once again reading the last chapter and GASPTTT when i turned the page and it was over?!?? LIKE DAMN I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED 😭😭😭😭😭
Rachel's Review: “Anything giving dark academia is an immediate yes for me. I think the second book is going to really give us what we need. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because I feel like the book could’ve been shortened down quite a bit. There was a lot of extra words and “fluff” that I didn’t think was necessary. The MMC's were chefs kiss! I loved the protectiveness “vibes” they were giving bc YES!”
Shannon's Review: “I loved this book! I think that dark academia has me hooked. This author really had me wanting more. I wanted her to fall in love with each of the Shadow Brothers. I loved the setting and the pull between her human life and the powers she was feeling. I do feel like there is more to her and book two will reveal so much. I gave it a 4 because I was left wanting more spice. I kept turning the page thinking this was the moment that there would be some serious connection between her and one of the brothers. I can’t wait for book two!”
Hattie's Review: This author is really on to something here and I am excited for book two. She is very descriptive, which I love, but I got a little lost at some points because it just felt like too much. As for the Shadow Brothers, I need more from them. I couldn’t tell if we were in middle school or if we’re older and just never had seen a girl naked. I did love the protective aspect of them. As for the MFC, that can’t be all she’s gifted with... There’s no way. I know she’s got more in the tank than that. I loved her best friends, there were so funny!
**A huge thank you to B.R. Vasquez and BookSprout for the opportunity to be an ARC reader!**
This book was incredible! I read the first half on one sitting it was that good!
I definitely got a certain vibe from the overall plot. Very Harry Potter/Goblet of Fire but with many twists and turns.
I like Thalia. I love how resilient she is regardless of not knowing what’s going on around her.
And don’t even get me STARTED on the shadow brothers. Not one, not two, but THREE shadow daddies?!?! I loved the romance and slow burn and the differences between all three of the men (Nox is the number one contestant for me, though. So far anyway).
And that CLIFFHANGER. Come on! I need the next book, like, right now please. I have my theories about book 2 but I will be keeping them to myself hehe.
The Fractired Veil is definitely worth reading and I am excited to see where this series goes from here. Thank you for letting me be a part of this experience!

Holy smokes!! I could not put this book down I ate it up, I was hooked from page one and it just kept getting better and better, at first I thought Thalia was going to be some weakling but by the end she was quite the badass! And then we have the Shadow brothers 🥵 Damon, Zarek and Nox, give me more please! They were brooding, funny, sometimes kind of dicks but once they gave in and showered Thalia with their over protectiveness and started to show their true selves hot dang. I’m going to need the next book ASAP!
I really loved this book! This author really left me wanting more. I wanted her to fall in love with each of the Shadow Brothers! I loved the setting and the pull between her human life and the powers she was feeling. I do feel like there is to her and that book two will reveal more. I gave it a 4 bc it left me wanting more spice. I kept turning the page and thinking this was the moment there was going to be a serious connection between her and one of the brothers. I can’t wait for book two!
Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of the book. I am excited to give a review.
Having spent quite a bit of time working in social services, I loved how real and relatable Thalia's story growing up in an orphanage was compared to kids that I worked with. Her struggles of feeling like an outsider and having to go on the offensive to protect herself are so familiar and I wanted to give her a hug and tell her she would be ok. Thalia's tenacity and drive were a perfect counterbalance for it and made the plot work as Thalia discovers herself and builds a community that she has never had before.
The Shadow Brothers (Damon, Zarek, and Nox) are beautifully written and their POV chapters bring fun insight into their characters and their relationships with each other and Thalia.
The plot is easy to follow while also bringing twists and turns that keep the story fresh and engaging. I will definitely be reading more in this series.
Such a detailed and beautifully written dar, academia, fantasy that pulls you in from the beginning. Mysterious acceptance letter to Nexara Academy. Three brooding and dark brothers. Not: tatted, quiet, possessive intensity. Damon: simmering hostility dressed to impress. Zarek: playful, arrogant, and a smirk that'll make you faint? Sign me up The cliffhanger is brutal though, you've been warned...
*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
I loved the prophecy at the beginning, a little rundown, giving you just enough information. The book has everything I love, academic setting, reverse harem, brooding tall absolutely beautiful men, a fun best friend, hidden powers etc etc. It starts off fast, a lot going on and little information. I would have liked it to go a bit slower, a good transition to the school, maybe some conversations with some teachers, a bit more information on why she’s there. Author does a great job at describing however sometimes it became too much. Like half a chapter just to describe him looking at her, a lot of it felt repetitive. There’s also a lot of staring haha, that goes on for awhile. I feel like there needs to be a bit more story and character development. Nonetheless, I still very much enjoyed it.
24% read The beginning of the story is.... so-so For me it felt like the typical odd character finding her way into a magical world. What is special about her? nearly 1/4 into the story we still do not know. Does she have powers? We do not know even though she was accepted into this world where 'great' gifted individuals are accepted into this special school.
What we do know is that she has grasped the attention of a trio brother who is mysterious and the typical 'bad boy' scene. No one seems to know anything about them.. but for some reason this girl has caught their attention.
Its a little irritating to have read this far and having nothing happen yet. She meets a friend. Acquired in a way that at first thought she was being befriended in an untrue way. But so far their friendship seems good.
The moments of interaction between the FMC and one of the MMC brothers also to me is eh. She wants to stay away and play it 'cold' in a way but her feelings are telling otherwise. Kinda just seems silly to me.
I do like the fact that the characters are young adults in this academy-like setting though. But so far it's been a day to day with the mysterious woods and brothers. A pull that she has towards them and herself to this forest that is theirs.
My beginning take. I want to put it down but I also want to pull through and finish it to see if it turns around. I always give a book a real chance and for me it's still a little too early to give up.
By 60%
By now we have learned she does have a sort of power. I got more interested in the fact that the academy was going to do a sort of trial. A moment to shine, to see the potential of what other characters can do. This bit of story ended up being a shorter moment then I anticipated and kinda made myself wonder again why this girl is even still around. I almost felt like...there was going to be more but it got cut short. I feel like this bit had real potential to add in. The 'brothers' are definitely a constant, the four of them are together like glue. She's going to get use to it.
This ended up being a DNF. I got about 70ish% I just couldn't push myself. And when I feel like I'm pushing to finish. I know I'm not entirely enjoying. There wasn't enough going on. It was the FMC not knowing what was going on. Why she was there. Too many questions and really no answers.
And with how far I read I feel like this book was a weird introduction to a series. One that opened with too many questions and no answers.
Thank you B.R. Vasquez for the opportunity to ARC read The Fractured Veil. This review is voluntary and completely my own.
I was hooked from the very beginning! Most fantasies I’ve read don’t really draw me in till at least 20-30% of the way in, but this had me by the end of the prologue.
I admire the way B.R. Vasquez lays out the beginnings of FMC Thalia, starting with her working her dead end job as a waitress at a diner and flashing back to her broken childhood as an orphan. It really played a big part in explaining and describing Thalia as a character. She’s introduced as a seemingly ordinary outcast, but later develops the strength to come out of her shell to unlock her powers.
The introduction of the Shadow Brothers, Damon, Zarek, and Nox, was so alluring. I was honestly thirsting for them ever since they laid their eyes on her 😅 The glow of all their eyes, their piercing green, blue, and amber eyes 🥵 The trio all have this tough, broody exterior that only Thalia was able to break through. The possessiveness and protectiveness the brothers have on Thalia is everything a girl could want! Oh and the romance was a sloooooow burn, which I appreciate. It made everything worth it in the end, which killed me 😭
As far as main plot goes, it almost gives me Harry Potter vibes. Thalia is a human who is invited to Nexara academy, a school for those with gifts. When she first shows up, she seemingly doesn’t have gifts and is ridiculed by her peers for being human and not knowing or possessing gifts. The Shadow Brothers to help develop her into the badass FMC though!
I really enjoyed the multiple POVs as well! It’s predominantly in Thalia’s POV, with sprinklings of the Shadow Brothers’ POVs to emphasize the importance of certain scenes. It all blended together so seamlessly to avoid any plot holes, which is amazing!
If you’re looking for why choose romantasy, with a slow burn and dark academia vibes, with a badass FMC and the dreamiest MMCs who swoon over her, this is for you!
If Harry Potter and Twilight had a more amazing child. This was a wonderful and immersive dark achedamia. There were so many memorable moments like my personal favorite scene where Thalia talks about the "pretty house cat." The world building had me feeling like I was walking through the Nexara achedamy with Thalia, El, and the Shadow Brothers. This book was definitely a slow burn but in the best way, with each relationship growing in a way that feels natural. Don't worry, though there is plenty of fun banter and flirting to fill in the slow burn, and there is a brother for everyone. You have the outwardly sunshiny Zarek, the broody misunderstood brother Nox, and the standoffish "enemy" to lover brother Damon. I am personally living for all three of the brothers and the smartass, sassy Thalia who compliments them each individually and as a group. Thalia is one of my new favorite main characters. She is such a strong example of a female who is realistic. She struggles with self doubt and confidence, finding her place and even her gift that lands her a spot at the prestigious Nexera achedamy and in the cross hairs of the Shadows Brothers as well as some other players. Her training arc is one of the more realistic as she continuously works herself to the bone for months and still isn't the better than gifted who have been training for years. She has a strong friendship with El, who is another strong female and, of course, has a rivalry with the resident jealous, mean girl. Through all this, there is the underlying mystery surrounding Thalia, and just how she an orphan human fits into this world of powerful gifted for better or for worse. I can't wait for the next book.
This is the first book in the Nexara Academy Series, as well as the first book I’ve read by this author. Certainly won’t be the last. I devoured this book!
This is a dark academia fantasy that starts off with impressive world building. The secrets, magic and mystery will captivate you and have you seeking answers to your questions throughout.
I immediately took to Thalia, the FMC. She is not one to take any shit from anyone, and I think that’s due to what she had been through in her past. She is trying to make out why she would be invited to Nexara Academy when she is merely a human with no magic.
The Shadow Brothers are broody, dark, mysterious and dangerous. Nox, Zarek and Damon, brothers having different personalities. Nox is tatted, quiet with intense possessiveness. Zarek a bit arrogant, playful and has a sexy smirk that will have you melting. Damon is more standoffish, unfriendly even. And how they set their sights on Thalia.
I loved the flirting, the banter and the slow burn. There were parts that would make me belly laugh and kick my feet. I enjoyed the storyline and the pace. There was tension and maybe a tad of spice. And the cliffhanger… caught me off guard! I am in need of book 2 and look forward to getting questions answered and maybe things heating up more!
The Fractured Veil is a dark academia novel filled with magic, dark secrets, Protective MMCs (that's right we're talking about three major Shadow Daddies all with their own sides of broodiness and smoldering) Fiesty FMC, mysterious powers, and major world-building.
The slow burn in this one was simmering just right to build up all the angst and banter between Thalia and The Shadow Brothers. Did I have my favorite? Absolutely! Cough, Cough, Nox...just saying. But seriously I loved how each Zarek, Nox, and Damon had their very own "relationship" with Thalia and very unique personalities to set them apart from one another but together they formed a beautifully broken-found family.
The world-building in this one was heavy but I felt like I was fully submerged into it once it got going and Nexara Academy built up around me with Author BR's words. I loved the air of mystery and the darker vibes that surrounded Nexara Academy and the characters within it.
Our FMC Thalia goes through a Power Awakening which we get to see her tap into it and strengthen it throughout the book all while she is trying to juggle the attention of the Shadow Brothers, nurture new friendships, make it through classes, fend off jealous rivals, endure the training, and survive deadly trails/beast attacks.
The way this book left me at the ending has me unwell because Author B R can write a dang cliffhanger like no other!
By far one of the most detailed and beautifully written dark academia’s I have read. Hands down. It is slow burn for sure but has an intriguing way of captivating that will have you page turning and losing time. I know because I have for the past two days 🤣🤣
Caution to your kindle or book, contains cliffhanger and I’m talking on the edge and where’s the rest! Definitely will be continuing this series.
Thalia, the girl with no fear and tired of being walked on taking control had me fist pumping the air and screaming for her. The transformation from timid to powerful. Explosion 💥
Now let’s get into my new 3 BBFs shall we? Zarek, Nox, and Damon. I’ll take them all. Lock me in a room with them and never let me out. I will be just fine 😂😂. Banter just the way I love it with them and multiplied by three! Yep! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Highly recommend. Spice: 🌶️ but ramping up so we know we are going places here. I can’t wait for the next book!!!!
Did I enjoy this book? For the most part yes. Was it well written- no I originally was going to give this a ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 star for the vibes alone. It was giving one season on the cw. But by then end it became a cancelled season for me and dropped to a 3star for me.
This book had soooooo much potential and I enjoyed the overall story. It felt like a blend of zodiac academy and bonded in blood but it was light.
The reverse harem of men had a lot of potential but there is no movement in it till 90% and then it felt rushed? Also this is not a bully romance, they just stare a lot at her. The academic setting was so light I was wondering why even bother. The fmc is barely in class and learns nothing. There is not a lot of details in this world but a lot of over explaining nothing. I feel more editing would have been good.
I would have just enjoyed the ride till we hit 75% and nothing was happening. No romance, no plot and the school dance till the end …: was just awful. I was really jiving but in the end was not for me.
***ARC review*** I really loved this book! This had a lot of character building and world building which has set up Book 2 nicely and I can’t wait to read more about Thalia and the Shadow Brothers - Nox, Zarek and Damon! Thalia came from nothing, always struggling, and having to fight her way through life. She gets invited to Nexara Academy - she decides to go but has no clue what she’s in for or what her “special power” could possibly be!! Everyone looks at her as just a human! She does befriend El and catches the attention of the Shadow Brothers! I enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down. Not much spice. Some chapters had Nox, Zarek and Damon’s pov the rest was Thalia’s pov. It did leave on a cliffhanger!!! Excited to read Book 2.
As always honored to be an ARC reader! Thank you BR Vazquez ♥️
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I already finished this book!
This was everything I’ve ever wanted in a fantasy novel—magic, broody cute guys and a mysterious danger? Count me in!!!
I loved how Thalia’s friendship with the Shadow Brothers slowly developed over the course of the book. It was so well written, and I absolutely loved Nox, Zarek, and Damon! My only complaint is that there just wasn’t enough Damon content—my cute man deserved more time on the page!! Luckily, the other Shadow Brothers still made my heart swoon.
Thalia was so brave and strong. Her determination was inspiring, and her banter and humor made her even more likeable as the story went on.
That cliffhanger tho... I need the next book right now!! Please haha
honored to have been chosen as an ARC. I fell in love with this book. Thalias' story is remarkable! her determination and strength from all that she's been through, pulled at my emotions so much. love the shadow brothers, too, and reading their POVs. ESPECIALLY DAMONS . I cried and laughed reading this, and the ending shattered me. I was hoping it wouldn't end how it did, but it just makes me even more eager and excited to read the next in this series ! I literally can't wait. this book was beautifully written and has some spicyness too. 🙌 thank you so much for writing this book and allowing me to be an ARC reader for it. I can't wait until it's released so I can purchase a copy for my bookshelf . I seriously loved this book !

Want to dive head first into a postwar world filled with magical beings and foreseen prophesies? Then this story is for you! After a long torturous war, a prophecy spread through decades slowly starts to come to fruition. Thalia is a human struggling through life when she arrives home to an admissions letter from a school for magical beings. Although she has no power, she decides to explore this new path and is thrown into this world of unknowns and the broody Shadow Brothers. Three of the most powerful men on campus are intrigued by her from day one and this hidden power within her keeps drawing them together. Fall in love with these characters just a hard as I have. You won’t regret it! One of my favorite reads of 2025.
I was kinda confused and not really sure of what was going on or why things were happening because it's so very wordy. There is so much description that it feels like information overload while also giving you nothing. It’s one of those books where I just kept reading, hoping it would make sense eventually… It wasn't until about 60% that I felt like I really liked the characters – not that I ever disliked them. Idk if I'll read the next book or not, but I do think this is a decent/good start to the series.
Tropes: 🖤 Why-Choose/Reverse Harem 🖤 Slow Burn Romance 🖤 Enemies to Lovers 🖤 Dark Academia 🖤 Fated Mates 🖤 Found Family 🖤 Chosen One
I received a free advance copy of this book from the author.
I have no words.. I absolutely love this… @authorbr absolutely blew this out of the water. This book is absolutely beautiful with its world building, emotion and absolute intrigue. I absolutely Love Thalia, she is a force to be reckoned with and absolutely will not back down from everything she encounters. Her past is full of heartbreak, shame, loneliness and abandonment, when she gets an invitation to Nexara Academy, her life changes for an outcome that’s currently unforeseen. Enter the Shadow Brothers, the silent brooding Nox, the charming enigmatic Fae Zarek, and the elusive psycho Damon… as her adventure unfolds, her strength, resilience and character are put to the test.. I did not see that ending coming. That Cliff has me on the edge of my seat. I seriously can’t tell you how much I am absolutely in love with this book. I can’t wait for book Two! ❤️
I actually gave it 3.5 ⭐️ but Goodreads doesn't give the option for that!
This story definitely kept my interest all the way up to the devastating cliffhanger! 😩 I'm so thankful that I was chosen to receive the arc, I am no author, but as a reader, I do see where there could be room for improvement with the flow of the story. With this being the authors' DEBUT novel, they did a wonderful job, I am excited to continue with this series and see the continued growth in writing as the story progresses!
Dark academia fantasy and why-choose, I was loving these MMCs Zarek, Damon and Nox 🥵. I received this as an ARC and I was intrigued by the plot and these characters as well as their magic 👀. However, I do see where there could be room for improvement with the flow of the story for the next books in this series because that cliffhanger omg 😳. Although with this being the authors' DEBUT novel it was good and kept me interested because I’m definitely going to continue the series. I just need to see what happens next 😮💨. Also multiple povs !
The prologue is just jam packed with lore and set the mood for a strange world of different cities and beings.
I love books with different POVs, but it's a double edged sword. I always find myself wanting more from a specific character and it usually isn't the main character. Thalia is our main character and she's hardowrking and trying to find her place in the academy.
The boys are an odd bunch and a clique of their own. It's always fun to see them be draw together each for their own reasons.
Wow! I devoured this amazing dark academia, why choose fantasy! Fast paced, powerful, descriptive storytelling! I was captivated and devoured this book wanting so much more! The power lays within an unknowing Thalia. A young woman who has never belonged and is just searching for a place where she’s accepted and loved. Meet the hot, powerful and broody Shadow Brothers. Is she just a distraction or is she everything to them? With slow burn romance, found family, magic, shifters, fae and demons in a university setting this is an amazing dark fantasy read. Beware of that cliffhanger!
While this book was great I was left so confused. How did Thalia keep getting these mysterious better powers especially if she was “only human”, how did she know how to use them?
I really did enjoy the story line, though I was hoping for a little more spice. The dynamic with the three “brothers” fun though I do wish Damon had been a little less of a dick. I also think he was good for her pushing her to her limits and testing her.
In the end I just really had no idea what was going on it didn’t seem to have a point. I guess if I knew there was a second book coming it would be a great cliff hanger.

This author is really on to something here and I am excited for book two.
I loved the book. It’s a great idea for a story line, and I loved every second of it.
The shadow brothers were plucked from my dreams. Every single one of them. Nox was my absolute favorite.
There was ton of fluff and not as much world building, some things kept being repetitive, especially the FMC’s past. But as this is the authors first book, I am sure they will learn from the experience and the second book will improve immensely.
I can’t wait to see where the story goes. I need book 2 like yesterday 😅
If you love dark academia, slow burn, why choose - You won’t regret reading this book!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was dark, twisty, and absolutely addictive. Everyone in this world is morally grey and making questionable choices—and I was 100% here for it. The plot had me guessing the whole way through, and just when I thought I had it figured out… that cliffhanger hit like a punch to the gut.
If you’re into messy characters, high stakes, and endings that make you yell at your book, The Fractured Veil is definitely worth picking up. Can’t wait to see where the story goes next!
