Pat Pattison’s “Essential Guide to Rhyming” is a great resource for songwriters that expands upon the lessons in rhyme from “Writing Better Lyrics”.
This book greatly expanded my understanding of various rhyme types, assonance, consonance, and alliteration, introduced me to juncture and voice leading, and taught me how to implement these poetic devices into my lyrics.
Pattison's book is an excellent book for anyone who wants to write lyrics. I have found him and his book to be an invaluable guide and resource on how to craft a well made song. I continue to refer to the book as I write.
I came across this book in my search for resources on both songwriting and rhyme, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much rhyme detail this book covers, compared to most other books (on songwriting or poetry or otherwise). My favorite section is Pat Pattison's scale of rhyme, in which he categorizes different rhyme types based on the level of stability (like musical chords). This is the only book that I know of that uses this unique categorization. I also appreciated the detailed examples he included for "additive rhyme" and "subtractive rhyme".
One of my favourite books I've ever written on rhyming for songwriters. Great ideas that Pat has developed much deeper than any other sources. Well worth reading.
