About the author

Dương Thu Hương (b. 1947) is a Vietnamese author and political dissident. Formerly a member of Vietnam's communist party, she was expelled from the party in 1989, and has been denied the right to travel abroad, and was temporarily imprisoned for her writings and outspoken criticism of corruption in the Vietnamese government.

Born in 1947 in Thai Binh a province in northern Vietnam, Dương came of age just as the Vietnam War was turning violent. At the age of twenty, when she was a student at Vietnamese Ministry of Culture’s Arts College, Dương Thu Hương volunteered to serve in a women’s youth brigade on the front lines of “The War Against the Americans". Dương spent the next seven years of the war in the jungles and tunnels of Binh Tri Thien, the most heavily bombarded region of the war. Her mission was to “sing louder than the bombs” and to give theatrical performances for the North Vietnamese troops, but also to tend to the wounded, bury the dead, and accompany the soldiers along. She was one of three survivors out of the forty volunteers in that group. She was also at the front during China’s attacks on Vietnam in 1979 during the short-lived Sino-Vietnamese War. However, in the period after Vietnam’s reunification in 1975, Dương became increasingly outspoken and critical about the repressive atmosphere created by the Communist government. Upon seeing the conditions in the South – compared with the North – she began speaking out against the communist government.
Dương moved to Paris in 2006. In January 2009, her latest novel, Đỉnh Cao Chói Lọi, was published; it was also translated into French as Au zénith.

Lần đầu đọc truyện này tôi chỉ đọc được khoảng 5 trang thì buồn nôn không đọc tiếp nổi. Hôm qua cố gắng đọc lại vì tôi ghét dở dang và cũng muốn mở rộng góc đọc xem sao. Và thật sự, đọc xong tôi càng kinh tởm.
Truyện làm tôi nhớ tới tiểu thuyết 3 xu thuê 200vnd/ngày chỗ nhà hàng xóm thời học cấp 1-2 gì đó, thời tôi đọc mọi thứ có thể. Lối viết dềnh dàng lờ đờ cùng các thể loại người chán ngắt. Anw, có khác là cô Hương lúc nào cũng nhét vào mồm nhân vật những triết lý, khiến cuốn này không đáng 1 xu.
Thế nào? Truyện kiểu lên án những kẻ không lý tưởng đúng đắn. anw chính bản thân lối viết lại cực kỳ giả tạo, mô phạm, cũ rích, rẻ tiền. Ghê tởm nhất là lại bênh vực 1 con phò phạch. Nhân vật Linh ghê tởm chồng vì lý tưởng bề ngoài trong khi cô ta thối từ trong ra, thối từ bản chất. Loại đàn bà hám danh nên sau 1 lần gặp người nổi tiếng đã bám theo, bỏ gia đình mình, đòi bồ bỏ vợ nọ kia. Rồi từ đấy trượt dài theo những phù hoa từ những người đàn ông khác. Loại vô đạo đức đấy mà được tâng bốc, bảo vệ. Thật kinh tởm hết sức.
Tuy nhiên cũng phải khen là cô Hương đặt tựa đề sách nhiều cuốn hay vãi ra và mồm mép cô nhiều chỗ không thường, tuy cũng không kiệt xuất gì.

Hoàn thành vào năm 1986, trong những ngày còn ở Việt Nam, còn hít thở bầu không khí của đất nước được thống nhất, bầu không khí của lý tưởng cộng sản mà Dương Thu Hương coi nó là ảo vọng và ví von nó bằng một câu chuyện tình yêu khéo léo.

Thời điểm Dương Thu Hương đặt bút viết là lúc mà xã hội vẫn còn quá nhiều tượng thần, những thánh nhân mà chế độ dựng lên nhằm mị dân. Họ đập phá đình chùa, bài bác tôn giáo nhưng đồng thời sản sinh những ông thần mới dị đoan hơn bao giờ hết. Họ để người dân sống với nó hạnh phúc trong đêm đen; nhưng một khi mặt trời lên, pho tượng hiện nguyên hình một cục đất sét mốc meo được tô vẽ nhoe nhoét, dưới ánh nắng con người sẽ vỡ mộng với cuộc đời. Và từ đấy họ sống trong địa ngục.

Linh là một cô gái đại diện cho người dân đang tin vào lý tưởng đó. Linh chính trực, hết lòng với lý tưởng sống ngay thẳng ấy và không bao giờ biết đến khoan nhượng. Linh là nhân vật chính, cuộc đời cô thăng trầm xuyên suốt câu chuyện. Từ một cô gái ôm thần tượng để sống cho tới lúc nhận ra nó chỉ là ảo vọng mà cô phải bước qua nếu muốn tồn tại.
Nguyên là tình yêu đầu của Linh. Nguyên uyên bác và ngay thẳng. Vừa như người yêu, vừa như người cha đã mất, và hơn cả, Nguyên là thần tượng của Linh. Linh yêu Nguyên say đắm bằng tất cả những gì một người phụ nữ có thể. Nhưng phụ nữ đến với đàn ông bằng điều gì, họ sẽ ra đi nếu không còn điều ấy.
Nguyên là nhà báo, với cuộc sống độc thân anh có thể gặm bánh mì trừ cơm mà kiên định với lý tưởng. Cho đến khi cưới Linh, anh không thể viết những bài báo không bao giờ được duyệt. Và với một phần ba trí thông minh sẵn có, anh dùng nó để viết báo láo lấy lòng cấp trên. Chẳng bao lâu anh giàu có.
Linh nhận ra điều ấy. Lần đầu tiên thần tượng trong cô sụp đổ. Cô bỏ anh đi.

Trần Phương là một nhạc sĩ đã có vợ. Ông ta có tài nhưng bị vùi dập. Cả cuộc đời Phương tìm mọi cách để lên cao trong xã hội, không từ một thủ đoạn nào. Nhưng đó cũng là một lý tưởng. Không những thế còn được bọc bởi những cử chỉ và lời nói ngọt ngào của nghệ sĩ. Điều đó khiến Linh nhanh chóng xiêu lòng. Linh bất chấp tất cả để ngoại tình với Phương.

Bên cạnh hai người đàn ông này, còn một người nữa si mê Linh. Hắn là một nghệ sĩ thực thụ. Một họa sĩ sống văng mạng, ngẫu hứng, phớt ăng lê nhưng rất tỉnh táo. Nếu hai người đàn ông kia si mê Linh và muốn có được cô. Thì "Phớt ăng lê" chỉ muốn cô làm cảm hứng vẽ tranh cho mình. Vậy là đủ.
Nguyên yêu Linh vì bị Linh khinh thường. Anh cần phải yêu cô, để soi vào cô mà trám lại phần nhân cách ngay thẳng của mình. Phương yêu Linh vì ông biết mình không xứng với Linh. Ông nuối tiếc tuổi trẻ bỏ ra cho một cuộc hôn nhân vì danh vọng. Ông cần tìm ở Linh thứ ông chưa bao giờ có, là tình yêu. Có thể nói hai người đàn ông ấy đều lạc trong ảo vọng muốn tìm lối thoát. Chỉ có Phớt ăng lê yêu Linh vì đơn giản Linh là Linh. Hay đối với Phớt ăng lê thì Linh là nghệ thuật của hắn.

Như vậy, Linh trải qua hai mối tình và cuối cùng Linh đã bỏ ảo vọng. Cô đứng giữa thực tại mà sống và yêu. Nhưng mối tình thứ ba của Linh là ai. Có phải với Phớt ăng lê không, có hạnh phúc không, có lý tưởng không. Không ai biết. Tôi không biết.

Énorme coup de coeur.

Linh et Nguyen, deux personnes pour qui j'ai eu de la compassion, de l'attendrissement, de la tristesse et de l'incompréhension. Je voulais tellement qu'elle le comprenne, mais à la fois je comprenais de façon théorique sa raison de le détester.

Certains chapitres suivent d'autres personnages : certains y verront des longueurs, moi non. Ils servent clairement à montrer des idées que l'autrice voulait aussi exposer dans son roman.

Je ne peux cacher le fait que j'ai d'abord été déstabilisée par la narration omnisciente (j'y suis rarement confrontée dans mes lectures); puis je m'y suis habituée. Et m'en suis fichue.

The title says it all. This is a novel that captures the changing of an era in a nation’s history—that moment when Viet Nam shifted gears from strict Marxism to economic, but not political, reform. The common goals, and the camaraderie of war and victory disappeared, except when they serve as a defense to prosecution. The brave new world of the Revolution is a system of favors, bribes, and tattlers, where crime is forgiven on the basis of decades-old heroism, where honest marriages are shattered and sham ones thrive. Into this shifting landscape stumble the journalist Nguyen, his schoolteacher wife Linh—neither education nor, especially, the news are exempt from political malfeasance—and their daughter. Linh discovers that Nguyen, whose romanticism she once idolized, now writes to serve the system. She loses respect for him and moves out, only to entangle herself in a romance that is more pure in appearance but infinitely more corrupt. No one is unscarred, even their daughter. Nothing remains to rely on, not even human relations. As Nguyen asks the editor of the newspaper, who has asked to write one more cosmetic piece, the most corrupt of them all: "Thank you for trusting me, but now I'd like to ask you a question: Has it ever occurred to you that this kind o trust does me no honor?" For Duong Thu Huong, modern Viet Nam is a society in which, as at the end of Romeo and Juliet, all are punished, as in the final words of the Prince of Verona. Except that in “Beyond Illusions” the love of the characters is not destroyed by death but instead by living.

"La vie sera toujours cette recherche passionnée. Aucune chute, aucun échec de mérite le désespoir. Chaque illusion qui s'écroule grandit l'être humain. Chaque idole qu'on renverse est un pas en avant vers la sagesse."

Duong Thu Hong a fait naître dans son roman un personnage féminin qui marquera a jamais ma vie de lectrice. Son honnêteté, son courage, sa capacité a aimer profondément et par dessus tout son refus catégorique de sombrer dans le désespoir font de Linh une femme inoubliable.

C'est un roman qui oscille entre amour ardent et lâcheté sentimentale, merveilleusement bien écrit, je n'aurai pas pu rêver meilleure introduction à la littérature Vietnamienne.

Me quedo con sentimientos encontrados sobre esta novela de ideas. Contestataria, sumamente política, pero que a veces puede parecer que sacrifica la sutileza y algunas complicaciones en pos de que la crítica al régimen resulte transparente. Por otro lado, este mismo uso de los personajes arquetipo, casi planos, se desafía constantemente a través de la intensidad de la trama y de momentos de una belleza arrebatadora.

Grūti ar zvaigznītēm vērtēt tik ļoti savam (un man svešam) laikam un vietai piesaistītu romānu. Tomēr cīņa par sirdsapziņu un vietu zem politiskās (komunisma) saulītes ir saprotama tēma un lasīt bija interesanti ar visu žanram neatņemamo melodrāmu.

Ho preso in prestito senza esitazione questo libro di Dương Thu Hương dopo aver letto, e apprezzato molto, La valle dei sette innocenti. Purtroppo, però, l’iniziale interesse suscitato dalla trama è subito sparito appena iniziato a leggere

Dương Thu Hương è un’ottima narratrice e con una storia personale molto interessante e movimentata (da volontaria durante la guerra passa a criticare il regime e a venir censurata nel suo stesso paese), ma a questo romanzo manca qualcosa e i primi a risentirne sono i personaggi.

Linh è una giovane donna, sposata e madre di una bambina, che lavora come insegnante. Sappiamo che è molto idealista e che si è innamorata del marito, Nguyen, perché condivide i suoi stessi ideali. Nel momento in cui Linh viene a scontrarsi con la realtà e scopre che il marito, per campare e far campare la famiglia, è stato costretto a piegarsi al regime e a scrivere articoli di giornali con dati falsi che mettono in buona luce il governo, Linh decide di lasciarlo perché si sente tradita e non riesce a vivere nella menzogna, preferendo addirittura quasi morire di fame e vivere in ristrettezze con la figlia piccola.
Ora, un personaggio con degli ideali forti è sempre bene accetto, ma Linh risulta molto immatura e addirittura poco credibile a causa del suo rifiuto di vivere nel mondo reale e accettare che non sia perfetto come lei vorrebbe. Se la storia ci avesse spiegato e/o mostrato meglio come mai Linh sia così rigida nelle sue posizioni e così ingenuamente idealista invece di raccontarcelo, forse avrei potuto trovarla più sopportabile e sentirla “reale”, ma così com’è scritta risulta solamente irritante e anche molto scialba, soprattutto se paragonata agli personaggi femminili che appaiono in scena (anche loro lontani dall’essere perfetti, ma molto più “veri” di Linh nelle loro contraddizioni e stili di vita). Persone che vivono solo di ideali in una società che li distorce sono ammirevoli, da una parte, ma possono anche muoversi nella suddetta società come fossero dei fantasmi. Linh è un fantasma, in un certo senso, per la poca consistenza che ha come personaggio e per questo suo continuo innamorarsi di ideali senza prendere davvero in considerazione la persona che li incarna, che sia il marito o l’amante musicista Tran Phuong.

Tran Phuong, come tutti i personaggi di questo libro, non è un esempio di integrità: fedifrago e amante delle comodità che gli offre una vita fatta di agi ottenuti grazie ai suoi agganci e al suo lavoro, si innamora di Linh, che in lui vede solo il mito creato dalla sua musica e non l’uomo che c’è dietro, uomo che non esita a “rinnegarla” davanti alla moglie per cercare di evitare, più che scenate di gelosia, una crisi che possa mettere in pericolo la sua bella vita. Linh si accorge della falsità del suo amante (amante che la porta in giro e la incontra neanche tanto di nascosto, ma non si pone domande vedendola deperire giorno dopo giorno) solo dopo diverso tempo, quasi per caso, e di nuovo è costretta a scontrarsi con una realtà che ha deciso di ignorare per vivere di nuovo nei suoi castelli in aria che le hanno fatto ignorare il doppio insulto (alla Linh donna e alla Linh idealista).

Il personaggio più interessante è Nguyen, il marito di Linh. Nguyen inizia ad aprire gli occhi dopo essere stato lasciato e si rende finalmente conto di venir ormai usato dai suoi superiori perché ubbidisce e agisce senza farsi domande e senza opporsi. Di nuovo, però, quando sembra che stia per succedere qualcosa, la narrazione si ferma e non ci è dato sapere se Nguyen abbia deciso di “ribellarsi” dopo aver capito in che modo il suo datore di lavoro sfrutta il suo non tirarsi indietro davanti ai compiti assegnati oppure se, di nuovo, abbassa la testa e ubbidisce agli ordini anche dopo il confronto col suo superiore.

Questo è solo uno degli diversi momenti in cui l’autrice decide di dire en passant, interrompere o far accadere fuori scena eventi che potrebbero dare più movimento alla lettura (e spessore ai personaggi, in particolare Linh). Il libro non è male e fa il suo lavoro nell’offrire al lettore l’immagine di un paese controllato, ma pieno di scandali e corruzione, in cui gli interessi del singolo sono costretti a passare in secondo piano o a sparire dietro una perfezione fittizia. Per il giudizio mi attengo, anche stavolta, alla descrizione che GoodReads dà delle sue stelline e ne assegno due (e mezza) perché, per me, questo libro “was ok” e ha un po’ deluso le aspettative che avevo. Ciò non toglie, ovviamente, che Dương Thu Hương sia una narratrice di tutto rispetto, ma questo romanzo non mi ha colpita quanto La valle dei sette innocenti e di più non mi sento di dare.

Quand les convictions personnelles et les enjeux extérieurs viennent s'engouffrer dans les relations qui lient les hommes et les femmes entre eux cela peut donner lieu à des destins de vie comme ceux de Linh et de Ngûyen.

Dans ce roman, Duong Thu Huong nous propose un récit tout en finesse qui vient exposer en quoi le rapprochement de deux personnes peut souvent se construire sur le mythe que l'on se fait de l'autre au moment de la rencontre, mais alors combien de temps ce mythe peut-il perdurer...?

Seul le temps nous dévoilera si ce mensonge est plus ou moins éloigné de la réalité, lorsque le voile se lève enfin.

La force des convictions et de la pression sociale dans ce texte et dans ce contexte politique nous rappellent à quel point nous sommes insignifiants face aux choix que l'on prend...

Alors, en va-t-il de l'accepter ou bien de s'en inventer les auteurs ?


PS : je parlais à mon père de ce livre et il m'a demandé "et le style?" je me suis dit, tiens☝️ j'ai rien dit à ce propos donc, en vrac voici ce que je lui ai répondu : élégant, fin, pertinent, juste, imagé, précis... très beau à mon sens🤗🙈❤️

Ça a été une très belle découverte ! Je ne savais pas de quoi le roman allait bien parler, juste qu’il est décrit comme la plus belle histoire d’amour vietnamienne. J’ai énormément aimé ce roman qui est aujourd’hui devenu l’un de mes livres favoris. L’autrice a une telle poésie dans sa plume ! Dès les premiers mots, j’ai été charmé par son écriture qui fait la force de ce roman. Les personnages ont aussi la part belle. Chacun d’entre eux va connaître une désillusion – concernant sa vie, son rêve, son amour. L’autrice ne tombe jamais dans l’apitoiement. J’ai aimé Linh parce qu’elle est fidèle à ses convictions ou encore Nguyen parce que malgré tout ce qui lui arrive, il continue à aimer Linh et à être une belle personne. Le Vietnam n’est pas un pays qui m’attire mais l’ambiance d’Hanoï m’a plu. Franchement, je n’ai pas assez de mots pour dire à quel point j’ai aimé ce roman.

I have heard somewhere that "Love originally comes from admiration". So what if there were no more lands for the "Admire" seed in the kingdom of love? Was love still passionate at the time, was it still passionate, and was it still intact as it was in the beginning? I found the answer for myself when I explored every page of the novel "Beyond the illusionary edge" of female writer Duong Thu Huong.
This is a novel that takes love as the main topic like many other novels, but the special thing about this book is that it focuses on exploiting the dodgy, false, rotten elements inside a child. talented people, intellectuals as well as social status. It reveals the fact that the people we "deified" turned out to be just moldy logs, ugly calluses. Never sanctify an ordinary person, because they are only mortals, there are also the evil sides of an ordinary person.
The work blew a new breath into Vietnamese literature at that time (1986), causing much controversy for readers, but it was undeniable the philosophy and reality that the work mentioned. To me, this work is not simply a love story, it is interwoven with political concepts and elements, but I would like to not delve into this aspect.

Tác giả viết dài dòng, đọc khó chịu, giáo điều. Nhưng nếu chịu đọc, lâu lâu có những đoạn văn sáng một cách dễ chịu, đặc biệt đoạn văn tả cảnh. Rất thơ, rất văn. Cách tác giả miêu tả nhân vật nhạc sĩ rất hay. Chủ yếu nhấn mạnh vào hình dáng chải chuốt (mái tóc đen như quạ) và đôi mắt phong lưu đa tình dối trá rất gợi hình - tôi nói gợi hình vì khi đọc, mình cố hình dung ra dung nhan người đàn ông khốn nạn đốn mạt ấy như thế nào, một con người đáng khinh bỉ đó đeo mặt nạ trông ra sao nếu là con người thật ngoài xã hội.

Tôi thích cách bà tác giả vẽ màu mắt, hồn mắt của cô Linh.

Nói tóm lại, câu chuyện đúng cũ, với kiểu cách trưởng giả, lý luận, đấu tranh, cách mạng, đối thoại với chính mình các kiểu. Nhưng tôi nghĩ nó đáng đọc để hiểu thêm về các nhân vật- có lẽ có khả năng thật trong đời sống hiện nay.

Well written but a story without the broad cultural and historical context inherent to getting the most out of it. No doubt it had stronger impact in Vietnam but to Western eyes is a story that could take place almost anywhere with an oppressive government in control. Nothing inherently Vietnamese to it, and I found that disappointing. Perhaps the translator’s note would have been better places at the beginning with a bit more historical detail, but as a closer it seemed too little too late. NOVEL WITHOUT A NAME is much stronger and more powerful and rich in culture and cultural commentary. This one just didn’t work as well for me despite its significance to the author’s countrymen.

In post-war Hanoi, a young school teacher loses respect for her journalist husband when she discovers that he's been writing propaganda for financial gain. She falls in love with a famous composer instead, and leaves her husband even at the expense of a comfortable lifestyle and her reputation. But honor isn't a fixed state, and the decisions made by the characters lead them in unexpected directions. Some of the dialog seemed stilted to me, probably because of the translation, but as an American I felt this book gave me more perspective on life in North Vietnam in the 80's.

Nội dung các câu chuyện không phải là quá phức tạp, đấu tranh nội tâm của các nhân vật cũng chưa được đẩy lên cao trào. Nhưng câu chuyện vẫn hết sức thu hút người đọc với những suy tư về thời cuộc, về hành xử, về sự lựa chọn của con người khi đứng trước các cám dỗ,... Mỗi nhân vật đều có cá tính hết sức rõ ràng và mạnh mẽ, kễ cả đó là kẻ hèn nhát, kẻ ngây thơ, nông nổi,... họ đều thể hiện hết mình cái sự cá tính ấy, không giấu diếm, không che đậy, không suy xịch.
Là một cuốn sách đáng đọc, để nhận thấy một góc nhìn khác về cuộc sống của con người sau khi thống nhất.

Đáng ngạc nhiên là mấy đoạn đầu sách văn khá cẩu thả và 'vội', thiên liệt kê kể lể và giống một kịch bản phim hơn là tiểu thuyết, nhưng qua được thì cảm giác như tác giả bắt đầu nhập tâm vào nhân vật để viết nên khá hơn. Nhân vật hay nhất là Nguyên, tuy nhiên thì mỗi nv cũng có những khía cạnh riêng, được khai thác đều nhiều hơn là sâu. Lời thoại văn vở và sáo. Tuy nhiên nhiều đoạn nội tâm tốt, DÙ mình có cảm giác nó là chỗ để nhét những lí tưởng của Dương Thu Hương hơn là một suy nghĩ chân thực của nhân vật.

Rất tiếc là không xuất sắc được như Thiên đường mù.

Bên Kia Bờ Ảo Vọng đã mang đến một góc nhìn khác về đời sống sau Cách mạng, và cả những giằng xé của người trưởng thành trong bối cảnh xã hội ấy. Không bàn đến tính chính trị, tác giả đã quá sa đà vào việc thể hiện quan điểm cá nhân của mình. Nhân vật trong sách hoàn toàn có thể giao tiếp rõ ràng mạch lạc thay vì xổ ra 500 từ đầy tính phẫn nộ giáo lý (và có nhiều khi chả hề liên quan) vào mặt người đối diện mỗi khi gặp nhau. Cốt truyện bị ba xu với nhưng mà thôi nó cũng là loại ba xu tạm được, chỉ hiềm ở thời đại nay chả còn ai dùng tiền xu nữa rồi.

Nữ chính trong tiểu thuyết là một con người tiêu chuẩn kép: Muốn người khác phải sống tốt đẹp như kỳ vọng của cô ta nhưng bản thân mình lại đi làm tiểu tam. Cho rằng mình nhìn thấy sự thật về những người khác nhưng lại không thấy sự thật về chính mình. Đến tận cuối tiểu thuyết, vẫn không hề có một sự cứu rỗi nào cho người phụ nữ này.

Khá thất vọng với cuốn đầu tiên mình đọc của Dương Thu Hương. Trên phương diện câu chuyện tình thì nó không thực và văn vở, trên phương diện chính trị xã hội thì hơi khiên cưỡng. Mình thấy cuốn này không age well. Hi vọng các cuốn khác của bà có chiều sâu hơn.
