The Goddess of Light - of course not!

Brilliant. Loved the full on action but she should really start wearing some toys that she can use in a fight as her fighting skills aren't exactly impressive. The plot has now grown bigger. Our mastermind is convinced that he is the Chosen one and that she is the Goddess of Light reborn. She's not! But having worked out the map to get to the hidden treasures, Kim goes racing off even as they work out that he's heading for the wrong location in Hawaii.
Take a hacking course 101, book tickets to Hawaii and survive a kidnapping attempt when the foursome land. Then she and her BFF are taken captive and she has to use her wits to survive. A statue, a wall of light, a skeleton, an exchange and a robbery. Will the girls get away? Will they get the statue and is the school safe?
There are little moments of humour as she let's her caustic tongue full range. Great action, well paced, good imagery and characters that are now in glorious technicolour.

Spradlin, Michael P. To Hawaii, With Love, 198 p. HarperCollins - Book Two of the Spy Goddess series.

Rachel is still not convinced that she is the goddess Etherea come to life, but Simon Blankenship, Etherea's immortal enemy reborn, is still trying to capture and use her. Rachel and her group discover another of Mithra's artifacts is hiding in Hawaii. When the kids are left behind, Rachel engineers the kids' means to follow - landing herself in a whole lot of trouble (many times) and endangering her friends' lives.

Spradlin hits the spoiled rich girl tone of voice in Rachel dead on and creates a not-too-campy romp that very nicely mixes spy novels with fantasy.

I really enjoyed this action packed sequel. I did like that the author finally started to delve into some of the secondary characters and their backgrounds. I still feel like the reader barely gets to know them, especially Brent. I didn't dislike Alex as much this time around. Overall, a nice action filled story.

Exuberant Fun for the Whole Family, Assuming They're Teens

So, an Eeevil bad guy wants to resurrect an ancient Dark God, but snarky Beverly Hills bad girl Rachel is the reincarnated embodiment of the Goddess who stands in the way of his nefarious plans. Rachel is pressed into being part of an Academy based team that's dedicated to frustrating Evil bad guy. Let the festivities commence.

I like breezy early YA Dark Lord fighting if it has a smart mouth kick-butt Valley Girl heroine, not too much googly crushing, a fast pace and a light touch. Well, that's exactly what you get here. Rachel is sometimes just intentionally dense and sometimes just a little too put-upon for a reincarnated Goddess, but that's balanced out by some funny one-liners and throwaway observations. The main plus is that Rachel doesn't wear out her welcome at the center of the book. She's just decent and resourceful enough, and has enough backbone and spirit, to be a heroine who is easy on the reader.

This is all complemented by a fairly restrained cast of supporting characters. We don't go quirky, weird here. The other Academy members are low key and aren't jazzed up to create a lot of phony angst or drama. This is a sort-of-paranormal action/adventure story, after all, not a school-daze drama. It helps that the head instructor, Mr. Kim, gets a bunch of good lines, and keeps Rachel, and thus the story, on track. It also helps that the writing is unobtrusive, but actually carefully crafted to feature Rachel, drive the story forward, and keep the action moving, without going overboard.

This is the second book in the series, but there's enough monologuing, heart-to-hearting from the heroine narrator, and general recapping that you can join the series in progress without losing the thread.

The upshot is that this was fun, light and entertaining, and struck me as a fine, breezy early YA goof of a read. (Please note that I found this book a while ago while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

My love of reading started when i was young, and it gives me immense pleasure to provide books to Spread the Word Nevada, an organization that passes them on to children in the community. They are a terrific organization supporting an important cause. If your local I encourage you to check them out. For those living further a field, look in your own community, their may already be a similar program in place. And if not, you can always help start one.

Myself, I go out on the weekends and
shop thrift store and bulk book lots to rescue books and donate them. Sometimes I'll find a book I remember reading when I was young and will read it again before passing it on.

I don't rate these books using my normal scale, instead I give most of them three stars. This isn't a Criticism of the book, simply my way of rating them as good for children.

his is the second book in the Spy Goddess series. There's a lot of trouble starting with ancient Roman times when Flavius becomes involved with Mithras, and sends seven treasures out across the world to be hidden.

Rachel is involved in all of this since it turns out she happens to be either the reincarnation or something like that of a goddess that originally had fought against Mithras. Which doesn't endear her to those who would resurrect the ancient God and allow him to run rampant over the whole Earth.

She and others form the academy join forces to attempt to get one of the treasures become Mithras' followers do, but nothing goes smoothly.

It's an okay book, but somehow things just don't click together correctly. It's a little silly, I think, overall, and just not that extremely interesting.
