Romantic Escapes #12

Hostinec v Prahe

Rate this book

Julie Caplin also writes contemporary romance as Jules Wake.

Julie Caplin is addicted to travel and good food. She’s on a constant hunt for the perfect gin and is obsessively picky about glasses, tonic and garnishes. Between regular gin tastings, she’s been writing her debut novel which is set in just one of the many cities she’s explored over the years.

Formerly a PR director, for many years she swanned around Europe taking top food and drink writers on press trips (junkets) sampling the gastronomic delights of various cities in Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Copenhagen and Switzerland. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. These trips have provided the inspiration and settings for the trilogy, The Little Cafe in Copenhagen, The Little Brooklyn Bakery and the The Little Paris Patisserie.

Readers are transported to the beautiful city of Prague in this romantic read where Anna and Leo are working against one another in a beer brewing competition. However, it turns out that this pair have a bit of a history, so being housemates raises a few questions about how they are going to get along. It’s fine that they are head-to-head in their work lives, but coming home to one another sends Anna off in a spin of memories and regrets.

Having now read several books in this series, I think it is Caplin’s depiction of the setting that adds to the identity of the novels. This definitely added a whole new level to this story, especially as Prague is not somewhere I have visited before (now on my travel “bucket list” after reading this!). It is evident that Caplin has an affinity with the city and I loved how the writer brings this setting alive. I felt like I was a tourist with Anna and Leo as they discover their new home – from the architect to the traditions of living in Prague, this book was both an education and a tour. Furthermore, the references to language, food and, of course, beer, meant this was a read that truly tickled my senses. It made the story even more appealing beyond the romantic genre of the book.

The beer brewing process doesn’t take centre stage to the story and for this I was quite grateful. Instead, the focus is on the people that Anna and Leo encounter. I loved the apartment block that the characters live in and the contrast between the different floors. Ludmila is like the matriarch of the building and Jan and Michaela befriend Anna and Leo very quickly – helped along by Leo’s friendly and flirtatious manner. In contrast, the head brewers themselves come to symbolise and old and the new which is a bit like Anna and Leo’s connection. The dinner party really came to represent how Anna and Leo have shaped their lives in Prague and what the future may hold for them.

Another warming aspect to this tale is how Leo and Anna are presented, romantically. I liked the fact that it is Anna who is the flawed character. I felt this made the story refreshing to read and I enjoyed seeing how she has to overcome her own vulnerabilities in order to find happiness at last.

A great, wintery read from Caplin, this is a good start to cosying up whilst the temperatures drop outside! It’s not a Christmas story but I think the travelling and the winter months in the latter chapters help to add to the atmosphere of such a warming tale.

With thanks to One More Chapter, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Who decided on this Christmas cover?!
Who decided on the blurb "It's the season for new beginnings and new love..."?!

I want to sue for false advertising!

Page 352 of 359, the word "Christmas" makes an appearance. Page 353: "It's a month away until Christmas". And that is it! Yet we have THAT cover?

I am a believer of mood reading and expectations, so when I realized this has nothing Christmassy as I was led to believe, my patience with this book was null. Especially since I waited a year to read as it was a last year's Christmas present!

The whole book did not help much either with the premise and progression. The suspension of disbelief is huge when you have to accept that the ONLY 2 people who were accepted in this pilot programme were 2 former spouses and while Anna had an actual background, Leo... didn't. Not mentioning that other than the programme taking care of their apartment (at the best location, of course of course), we do not know how they actually survive. I guess EVERYONE has enough money to move for 6 months to another country and just go for it (what about the visa?!).

The characters themselves are likeable enough, but everyone and everything feels like a caricature of the real thing. Anna with her insecurities, Leo with his obliviousness, Michaela and Jan as the golden Czech standard, Ludmilla as the best landlady, Karel and Jiri as polar opposites of beer development, Steve as the unlikeable boyfriend from literally the first moment... It's just too much, especially Jan and Michaela who are like their fairy godparents.

I live in Czechia, though I am not Czech, so it might be because I already understood a lot of the places/references, but it all felt so... cringy. It's one thing to say some basic things like words, etc, but whole another when you have a list of facts here and there in what is supposed to be a normal, casual conversation. At some point statistics were brought forth... And then, Jan and Michaela had to be every Czech stereotype that you could think of; mentioning chata in every page, talking about every traditional czech food, being the best diy people (apparently that's a stereotype), picking mushrooms, being beer lovers, being wine lovers, being the most friendly people in the world. And the most unrealistic thing? EVERYONE spoke perfect English. But okay okay, it's a romantic story...

Or it tries to be. Basically they want to jump on each other from the first minute they meet again... So, the story isn't really that deep as it is just finally letting go, rather than developing. Especially towards the end, when things were progressing steadily, character development made a sudden turn for the "twist", which made no sense to the point that even a character that was against their relationship the day before, was facepalming!

Anyway, nothing memorable about it.

If I took a shot for every time they had a beer, I would be blacked out by the quarter of the book. Seriously, Czechs do more things in their free time than drink beer, for example, have a personality. I don't really think Julie Caplin perceived that. Seeing Prag from the POV of a turrist was interessting, even thought sometimes a bit forced and just overdone. Overal if I overlooked the dragged plot, sims-like characters and sometimes ridiculous situations and dialogues thesecharacters did, the book was fun to read.

As a Czech person I had really high expectations and this book didn’t live up to them. When I read it I didn’t feel like I was reading about real people and especially not Czech people. I liked that the autor tried to show the beauty of Prague and the Czech culture, but I don’t think she was successful. I actually can’t decide which character annoyed me more. In general it was a fun book to relax with.

Should you ever be thinking of visiting Prague, I honestly wouldn’t bother with Google or any guidebooks – this wonderful book will transport you there, giving a wonderful taste (and I use that word deliberately – food that makes your mouth water, and if you’ve never tried Czech beer…) of exactly what it would be like to live and work there, lingering at times on the many unmissable sights. I’ve rarely come across a book that had me so immersed in its lovely setting and (if they don’t already) I’m sure the tourist organisations will be rolling out the red carpet for the lovely author every time she visits. She captures everything in such wonderful detail, really bringing the place to life – and you can feel that it’s a place she loves.

And love certainly is a major part of the totally gorgeous story too. Anna is there as part of a competition – working with a brewery to design a new beer, part of an initiative to promote Czech brewing in the UK – hoping to win the prize of the equipment she needs to set up her own microbrewery. The trade attaché department have organised accommodation for the duration of her placement – a shared flat with two bedrooms and a rather lovely terrace. But no furniture, and as boyfriend Steve assembles her bed before heading for home, they discover another problem – she’ll be sharing with Leo, the men take an instant dislike to each other, and (although she keeps it a secret for now) they do have a shared past that she’d really prefer not to revisit. And he’s her competition for the prize that means so much to her – and we do discover the reasons why, and why she feels (perhaps wrongly) that he might not be quite as invested in the outcome.

They’re each assigned a sponsor – Anna’s with a more traditional brewery, Leo’s with an innovative young one, with the additional complication of a rift in the family that’s made the owners enemies. Making the best of things after the initial sparks that fly between them, they enjoy the company of downstairs neighbours Jan and Michaela, drawn in by their circle of friends too. And landlady Ludmilla isn’t quite the cranky presence she seemed to be at first encounter either. And it would be a shame not to see a bit of Prague while they’re there, wouldn’t it? And slowly – very slowly, with a few reversals along the way – their unlikely connection starts to build. Perhaps Anna isn’t the tightly laced-up and entirely focused person she sometimes seems to be – and maybe there’s rather more depth to Leo than his jokey, flirty and friendly front would have you believe.

Enough of the story-telling – the author does it so much better. In fact, she does it quite wonderfully – I so enjoyed the way the ice began to thaw between them, each of them an individual who really won my heart. And as for the book’s central romance – that was so real I could feel it, and something very special indeed. And I haven’t even mentioned that it’s nearly Christmas too, have I? A time of year when emotions always run a little more deeply – and this book entirely captures the magic of the season. I must mention too a particularly welcome cameo appearance from a couple central to one of the earlier books – nothing that need trouble you if you failed to notice, but I thought it was such a lovely touch.

This was such a special book, and I have to say I loved every single moment – the beautifully drawn setting, the gorgeous romance, the emotional ups and downs, the friendships, the happy ever after I so hoped for but doubted would ever happen. Quite magical, and the perfect read for the long dark nights – do add it to your Christmas reading list, because I’m quite sure you’ll love it every bit as much as I did.

Anna a Leo byli manželé! Sice jen půl roku, ale manželé. A Steve o něm neví. No není ona perfektní přítelkyně?

Chudák Anna žárlila a proto zdrhla.

Nic.

Dají to dokupy. To jsme nečekali.

No každopádně.

I love this series of books and have two in-between my last read I haven't read in the order. Good job they can be read as stand alone.

Prague was a beautiful and different setting to my usual reads. It took you there virtually through reading it.

I wondered what I was going to make of the characters. That took some time. Steve I disliked. Leo grew on me so much. He is one of the most loveable character in the series. While Anna I wanted to kick some self worth and confidence into her. Needing to see she does not need either but can want one of the guys.

Anna and Leo work so well together personally and professionally with the beer in our place in Prague two different beers two different people who blend so well together.

You always know that when you pick up a book in the Romantic Escapes series by Julie Caplin that you are going to be carried away, if only vicariously, to a beautifully captured destination where you will be fully immersed in the sights, sounds, smells, food and culture even as a love story unfolds around you. This author’s ability to bring each of her book’s location to vivid life is the main reason that she is one of my favourite authors of romantic travel lit.

Even by her standards, she has worked some magic in A Little Place in Prague, though. This is a place that is obviously very special to her and her love affair with the city oozes from every paragraph of this book. The story is saturated with joy and affection for the Czech capital and, if you are not itching to book the next available flight out to experience the place yourself as soon as you have finished then you must be what my granny would have described as a ‘hard-hearted Hannah.’

It’s many years since I was in Prague myself but I really loved the place when I visited and have been meaning to take another trip back for a good long while, this book may just have given me the kick I need to get on and do it. I can already detect the cobbles under my feet, feel the nip in the air as I cross the Charles Bridge and linger to savour the wind blowing off the Vltava as I examine the statues that line its edges. I’m longing for a taste of some locally-brewed beer and local pastries after reading Julie’s delicious descriptions. Get me on that plane now!

This joie de vivre extends from the author’s descriptions of the city and its delights in to the characters with which she people’s the story, and the central romance itself. Everything about this book is warm and glowing (bit of a weird description, I know, but if you read the book, you’ll understand EXACTLY what I mean, I promise.) All of the characters are the perfect people to fall in love with. The central pair are clearly made for each other and are impossible not to delight in and root for. I was desperate to hear more about Leo (as I made clear in my review of Julie’s last book, A Villa with a View, which you can read here) and I was not disappointed with his outcome. Much as I might read dark thrillers and post-apocalyptic novels, I am a huge romantic at heart and this book made me marshmallow-y (yes, it’s a word!) inside all the way through. Aside from the main protagonists, the supporting characters are all wonderful; I wish they were my friends in real life and I can’t really be more complimentary than that.

Everything about this book is perfect for reading at this time of year. If you are a fan of armchair travel and romantic novels, this book is everything you could possibly wish for with bells on. I get a warm little tickle inside just thinking about it even now. It is an afternoon snuggled in an armchair under a fluffy blanket in front of a roaring fire with a hot chocolate at your elbow and a handsome man smiling at your from the other end of the sofa – but in book form. If that isn’t enough of an endorsement to make you buy it, you really are a hard-hearted Hannah!

A musím s nimi súhlasiť.

Here comes a very honest review. Unfortunately I did not like this book at all. Since I haven’t really stumbled on any bad contemporary romance novels, I kept thinking that it must get better. After every 50 pages.

There was so many typos. Almost every chapter had one, or two. This really bugged me. The characters didn’t open up about their main problem until like 30 pages before the end of the book. So nothing really happened during the whole of it. You could flip forward 100 pages and not miss anything.

I also found it to be too descriptive. I kept thinking that the author must’ve used every word in the dictionary. So even though the storyline was not there, it wasn’t an easy airport read. The focal point of the book was definitely the city of Prague. (Since I haven’t read any of the authors other books I assumed that’s her style.) Every little thing was described in 50 or so words so I got into the habit of skimming over whole pages. Unfortunately the dialogue was dry between the characters and their thoughts were short and repetitive.

I was looking forward to the final chapters, sure that things will get exciting. But reading on they just made me anxious and frustrated. I did laugh at the ending because it was very predictable whereas I’ve found that romance novels’ endings usually aren’t.

Sorry to be a wet blanket.

lovely but different from the others

I’ve been an avid reader of this series since the beginning, each new book making me want to visit the place it was about. This book absolutely made me want to revisit Prague and try many of the adventures mentioned…but the characters felt very artificial, almost black and white or light and dark. It was difficult to warm to either of them honestly…I kind of wanted to hear Jan and Micaela’s story more! Some of the story line was just hard to believe. I still love these books and will continue to read them, but hoping for more relatable main characters next time

In the author's Acknowledgements at the end of the book, she writes, "This book is my love letter to Prague." It is definitely that. The book, set in Prague, is filled with all the food, drink, and sites of Prague, from those seen mostly by tourists to things the locals know. I liked that part of the book. The story itself was just okay for me. it wasn't bad. It was fun seeing Leo as the hero (he was featured prominently in the last book). I just felt that the setting often outshone the actual characters.

Somewhat disappointing

I have purchased every book in this series because the first few were so enjoyable. Sadly, the last two were not of the same quality. This one is too long, with an unnecessary dragging out of the story. The marketing ideas seem juvenile and not very creative. The love thread resolution is predictable. Caplin does a good job of capturing Prague and I would like to spend a week or so there.

Praha patrí k mojím najobľúbenejším miestam a k tomu pivo? No neber to.

Preskakujúce iskry a praskajúcu chémiu tu veľmi nečakajte. Totálne ma vytáčala „rodina“ Anny, ktorá, akonáhle vstúpila do príbehu, mi dvíhala krvný tlak.

Ale svojim spôsobom to bolo milé, romantické. A čo nesmiem spomenúť? No predsa pivo, ktoré neodmysliteľne k Prahe patrí.

Little Places in Prague is a charming, feel-good romance that captures the heart of the Czech Republic through its vibrant setting, delectable food, and culture. While the romantic elements and descriptions shine, the characters add an emotional depth that keeps you invested.

Ludmila is a standout character, bringing warmth, wisdom, and a touch of humor to the story. She exudes the kind of quiet strength, encouraging personal growth and offering sage advice at just the right moments.

Steve is a character that evokes pure frustration throughout the novel. His dismissive and patronizing attitude toward Anna makes him an easy villain to root against. His inability to appreciate her talents or treat her with respect leaves you fuming, but it also makes her journey toward self-discovery and love even more rewarding.

The romance in the novel is sweet, tender, and rooted in genuine emotional connection. It’s not just about falling in love but also about learning to value oneself, making it all the more satisfying when the protagonist finds happiness.

Caplin’s descriptions of Prague and the Czech countryside are breathtaking. From cobblestone streets and historic architecture to the rich, mouthwatering details of Czech cuisine, the setting feels like its own character.

Prostredie bolo príjemné, kedyže nepoznám Prahu z predošlých návštev, určite by ma lákalo to napraviť.
