pseudonym for Samuel M. Steward

Samuel Morris Steward, also known as Phil Andros, Phil Sparrow, and many other pseudonyms, was a poet, novelist, and university professor who left the world of academia to became a tattoo artist and pornographer.

Throughout his life he kept extensive secret diaries, journals and statistics of his sex life. He lived most of his adult life in Chicago, where he tattooed sailor-trainees from the US Navy’s Great Lakes Naval Training Station (as well as gang members and street people) out of a tattoo parlor on South State Street. He later moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where he spent the late 1960s as the official tattoo artist of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.

3,5/5!

Greek Ways is an erotic gay novel that follows an up-and-coming porn star and highly popular prostitute Phil as he goes about his days, gets into all kinds of sticky situations and is reunited with the lover who once betrayed him.

The Finnish translation’s backcover referred to this novel as ”the Rolls Royce of gay porn” and there was no way in high hell I was not going to check it out. I have no way of knowing if this truly was a Rolls Royce level book – I’m not familiar with the gay porn side of literature, unfortunately – but I had a good time. The book didn’t take itself too seriously and was more on the humoristic side, and I found myself cackling quite a few times. I am convinced a part of the humor for me came from the Finnish translation and the word choices etc. used by the translator. If this had been a novel that tried to be all deep and serious, the vocabulary would’ve been awkward, but in this book which was all about the different kinds of sexcapades Phil has, it just enhanced my experience!

The book doesn’t really have that much of a plot. There is one larger storyline going on with Phil’s former lover who is now trying to take down the brothel Phil and his colleagues live in, but otherwise there wasn’t that much story, which didn’t bother me, cause I expected it. The characters were all enjoyable enough and I found myself actually growing quite fond of the hardened and sarcastic Phil, the young enthusiastic naïve Teddy and Tex, the brothel’s cowboy. The character work wasn’t spectacular, but once again, that’s not the point of this book. The story did have a twist or two, and I was actually quite shocked by one of them: near the end

I guess I would recommend this to anyone looking for an erotic gay novel and who do not need that much plot with their smut! I'm so glad I found this book in translation, cause the Finnish made it even more hilarious and enjoyable. I'm not usually good with smut in my own language for some reason - it has a tendency to feel very clunky and just off-putting - but when it's in a story like this, it worked so, so well. I will never forget Phil and the adventures of his "vanha veijari".

This! This surely is the best gay porn book I've ever read - I totally laughed my arse off! It's not even erotic fiction anymore, but pure joyous and nasty porn with lots of sperm everywhere. I loved this a lot for these reasons. The text flow was great and even the translation was wonderful - the whole style is witty and sarcastic, which makes this oh so great. Andros is an amazing writer and the book was surely hot.

The main character Phil is perfect - he knows his own rights and value. He's surely a smooth lover and cunning too. Especially I loved the whole police Larry part and the whole hate sex thing. The only negative thing about this book is Larry's suicide at the end, since it was totally unnecessary and too abrupt. All the characters are really great and I so wanted Phil and Jerry to fool around too and I got that. It was great that most of the guys were either ordinary or even ugly, which is more realistic than pure Adonis guys. The sex scenes varied and were interesting all the time. Andros knows how to write sex and that's a merit in its own right. At first I thought that the book was merely full of sexual encounters of different sorts without any goal, but gladly over time the basic plot evolved too. I wish modern erotic/porn writers would learn from Andros, since this was originally written in the 1980s and this rocks out with its cock out.
