Everything was so vague… There’s a lot of exposition, and yet I don’t have an idea of what the realm looks like, or how big it is, or how anything works. Characters are barely described, I think only Anumar was described in any detail, and even him I had trouble picturing. I had no idea what kind of clothes they wore. I don’t want a detailed account of what fabrics or patterns the clothes had, just tell me if the guy is even wearing a shirt! Sometimes it seemed that way only for Serenity to describe the tattoos on his arms, that she couldn’t have seen with a freaking shirt. Or was it sleeveless? I don’t know, and that drives me nuts! The deals he makes are equally vague, it was like the author couldn’t think of the exact terms of the deals so she didn’t bother. Except when Serenity talks about fairness in the deals I have no idea what she means, because I don’t know if those deals were fair or not. As a result, we’re told a lot about the characters personality and morals but we don’t get to see it. And the world felt so incredibly empty! We’re told there’s what amounts to an eternal party going on in Anumar’s castle, but never see it, not even when they cross the actual party in one scene. It’s just “we cross the party to get to the other side of the room” and that’s it. There were other characters, but they appear for about a paragraph or two and then they’re just mentioned in passing one or two other times. This is a prequel to the series, and it was meant as a teaser of sorts, so I won’t be too harsh, but the writing style is not for me.
