Rate this book
A deal with a demon always has a cost—but globe-trotting through the demon realm is more than Serenity bargained for.
Starving and desperate, Serenity has nowhere left to turn. Her only hope lies in summoning a dealmaker demon—a creature of cunning bargains, piercing stares, and a surprisingly tender touch. Recognizing her as his fated mate, he offers her a tantalizing survival in exchange for her loyal service while he travels his realm.

A world of dark magic, strange creatures, and forbidden passion…

Trekking through the magical lands, an unexpected bond grows between them, fueled by proximity and something far deeper. But when a rival demon sets his sights on the dealmaker’s most prized possession—her—she realizes their bargain may cost more than she ever imagined.

She made a vow in desperation. Now, its power could bind them forever—or destroy them both.

A solid and quick read. I enjoyed the writing style and had fun exploring the demon realm.
I know it’s a short prequel but some things were left a bit too lose for my liking. And I don’t know if I‘m happy with the end but I‘m definitely happy that the author didn‘t choose to make them three (if you know you know it’s my most hated trope 🥲).

Also the summary is written kind of dramatic IMO. There is no real danger surrounding Serenity and I honestly hoped for a bit more action.
Other than that I enjoyed this one. The worldbuilding is very cool and very understandable which I appreciate!

TAKING THE DEMON'S VOW started out interesting but I just slowly started to lose interest once Serenity went to the demon realm. The world building we did get was really interesting and unique but it was also vague and overall, character and setting descriptions were lacking. I can't pinpoint a particular thing that led me to lose interest, I just did.

Everything was so vague… There’s a lot of exposition, and yet I don’t have an idea of what the realm looks like, or how big it is, or how anything works. Characters are barely described, I think only Anumar was described in any detail, and even him I had trouble picturing. I had no idea what kind of clothes they wore. I don’t want a detailed account of what fabrics or patterns the clothes had, just tell me if the guy is even wearing a shirt! Sometimes it seemed that way only for Serenity to describe the tattoos on his arms, that she couldn’t have seen with a freaking shirt. Or was it sleeveless? I don’t know, and that drives me nuts! The deals he makes are equally vague, it was like the author couldn’t think of the exact terms of the deals so she didn’t bother. Except when Serenity talks about fairness in the deals I have no idea what she means, because I don’t know if those deals were fair or not. As a result, we’re told a lot about the characters personality and morals but we don’t get to see it. And the world felt so incredibly empty! We’re told there’s what amounts to an eternal party going on in Anumar’s castle, but never see it, not even when they cross the actual party in one scene. It’s just “we cross the party to get to the other side of the room” and that’s it. There were other characters, but they appear for about a paragraph or two and then they’re just mentioned in passing one or two other times. This is a prequel to the series, and it was meant as a teaser of sorts, so I won’t be too harsh, but the writing style is not for me.

📖 Taking the Demon’s Vow by Mira Cross
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5/5)

(𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸.)

This book was such a fun, unique take on demon romance! It’s fast-paced, short, and full of sweet moments—especially if you love the insta-love trope. Anumar, the MMC, was surprisingly tender, and I loved watching him grow throughout the book. He starts off cold and closed off, but Serenity slowly unlocks a different side of him.

One of my favorite parts? The 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝘀. 🦋✨ Their mode of transportation was so creative, and the scene with the baby moths was beautifully described—I could almost picture it.

Because this is a prequel and meant to be a teaser for the next book, I found that some parts jumped too quickly. The world-building and character development could have been expanded, and I wish certain scenes had been given more depth (like the wedding night… and then boom, we wake up?!). This book could have easily been twice as long, and I would have happily devoured it!

Overall, I enjoyed it, and I’m excited to see where the full series takes us.

If you like the following, then I'd check it out!
-Insta-love
-Fated mates
-Paranormal romance
-Dark magic
-Fast-paced
-Forbidden passion
-Brooding hero
-Strong heroine

First off, love the cover. It's so pretty.

This book was quick and fun to read, and I'm very much looking forward to the next one. While it does end the story and there are no cliff hangers, there's a prologue for the next book at the end of this one and I'm disappointed to learn it won't be out for many more months. I wanna read more from this world right now dangit!! lol

Speaking of the world, there is a respectable amount of world building. There are native species of flora and fauna, customs, festivals, politics, and more for the demon's home realm. It's all a nice touch for a traditional "make a deal with a demon, fall in love, live happily ever after" kinda story. Usually those are set in the human's world.

Not a fan of miscommunication use in a book to extend the drama, and this one does use it unfortunately, but it's not too overwhelming. I just want characters that know how to talk to each other like the adults they are *sigh*

Overall, good book, will read the next one!

Taking the Demon’s Vows is suspenseful and a page turning paranormal romance. The story is fabulously written, well balanced with action/romance and beautifully executed by Mira Cross. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I was completely blown away by the storyline of this book. Taking the Demon’s Vows is the story of Anumar and Serenity. I absolutely loved getting to know these two characters as well as seeing their story come to life throughout the book. The chemistry between Anumar and Serenity is absolutely fascinating and breathtakingly beautiful. I’m looking forward to reading more fantastic stories from this incredible author in the future. I would absolutely give this book as a recommendation for anyone who loves reading paranormal romances. I’m definitely going to be checking out more of this author’s work in the future.

I can't get enough of this cover. It is so beautiful! I'm gonna get a physical copy just to keep on the shelf it's so pretty!
This book was so good. It's is fast-paced but for me that's a good thing. I get distracted and bored easily. I read it in a day! I loved that we were able to see what the characters were thinking and feeling throughout the book.
This is cliffhanger free, but there is a sneak peek of book 2, and it's got me wanting more. I wish we didn't have to wait til the end of the for that one!
It's worth the read. If this doesn't pull you out of your reading slump, I don't know what will! My only negative was I wish it was a little bit longer.
I want to live in this demons realm it's so beautiful. The author did a great job articulating the realm. I was able to picture it in my head!

Taking the Demon’s Vow is a fast-paced, addictive paranormal fantasy that delivers just the right mix of danger, desire, and demonic intrigue. Mira Cross sweeps readers into a darkly enchanting world where desperate deals lead to unexpected adventures—and surprisingly swoon-worthy demons.

Serenity’s journey is gripping from the start. Starving and out of options, she makes a fateful deal that pulls her into the depths of the demon realm. What follows is a thrilling, globe-trotting ride packed with magic, sharp banter, and just the right dose of heat. The story wraps up cleanly—no cliffhangers—but teases what's next with an enticing prologue that has me already eager for book two.

The pacing is quick, making it a perfect binge-read, and the stunning cover? Absolutely shelf-worthy. I’m grabbing a physical copy just to admire it.

This was a fun, quick read! Serenity is a human, lone survivor of her village, near death as she travels to try to find civilization. She comes across a book that summons a demon, one who would grant her wish for something in return. This demon turns out to be her fated mate. He saves her in exchange for her to be his “assistant”, so he can spend time with her. The demon world sounds fun and interesting, and since was a short prequel book, I’d love to read more about the world and everything that makes it unique. Serenity and Anumar travel, see sights, get to know each other, fall in love and complete the mating ceremony. I liked the characters and the strength of Serenity, the sweetness of Anumar, and I’m looking forward to one day reading the rest of the series as this was a teaser.

Thank you BookSprout, and Mira Cross for sending me this advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a really fun quick read. I really enjoyed the interesting Dealmaker magic system. All the characters were great, and very memorable too.

Both Serenity and Anumar had their own trauma and baggage to deal with, but it was enjoyable to watch them work through it. There was a little bit of danger too, but nothing too serious.

There wasn't a ton of worldbuilding, but for the length of the book it was perfect. It left me wanting more books in the series to learn more about the other areas in these worlds.

This is the perfect kind of brain candy book that doesn't take deep concentration to enjoy, and it was exactly what I was in the mood to read.

A fun and unique take on demon romance with sweet moments and a creative magical world (the **moths** were a standout! 🦋). Anumar’s growth and his bond with Serenity were touching, and the insta-love vibe will definitely appeal to some.

That said, the world-building felt vague, and character descriptions were inconsistent—I often couldn’t picture the setting or even what people were wearing. The story moved too quickly, skipping over key moments (like the wedding night!), and side characters felt underdeveloped.

As a prequel, it sets up an intriguing premise, but I wish it had gone deeper. With more detail and stronger immersion, it could’ve been amazing!

Thank you to Mira Cross for gifting me a copy of Taking the Demon’s Vow! I am voluntarily leaving a review, and all opinions are my own.

This was a cute, basically instalove, fast-paced, refreshing read. I’m generally not a fan of fast-paced, instalove novels, but the author wrote this one so realistically that it didn’t bother me a single bit! The world-building and character depth are perfect, and there is a happy balance of smut and plot.

Taking the Demon’s Vow has earned itself a solid 4 stars! I recommend reading this! And I look forward to reading more novels from Mira Cross.

Started off interesting and slowly went down hill and started making less sense.

Also wish I could bleach my eyes after reading this.

'He grunts when we meet resistance—the large bulge at the base of him is too big for me to take easily, but the thought of the stretch it’ll bring makes me eager to take on the challenge. I lift my hips to meet him, but he pulls back, kissing me to keep me pinned to the bed. “My knot is too much for you right now. When you’re ready to be my mate, you can have all of me,”'

Thank you to the author for letting me ARC read your story! I really enjoyed it. It was a great palette cleanser for me because I have been reading a lot of dark romances lately. The romance was sweet and I loved seeing the characters point of views. I wish it were longer though. I felt like the pacing was very quick and I wish we got to see the characters grow more. But overall, I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next book

Taking a demons Vow was a fun easy read about a human girl called Serenity who was living a hars life and had narrowly missed herself.
As she escapes in the snow she finds a old cottage with a book on summoning a demon for a deal.
Our demon is a werewolf demon who makes her a deal and whisk her away.
This is a spicey fantasy.
Fantasy world but not high fantasy world building

A captivating paranormal romance set in a uniquely imagined demon realm. The story follows Serenity and her demon dealmaker, filled with both tension and tenderness. While the story concludes satisfyingly without a cliffhanger, the enticing sneak peek into the next book leaves you eagerly anticipating more from this world.

It’s a short read with some of the usual Romantasy tropes that people tend to enjoy, within a unique world that I wish was expanded upon a bit more. Being a short read, some moments moved a little too fast for me, and I think that took away from my overall enjoyment but I was engaged and intrigued enough by the story, setting, and characters that I would definitely recommend giving it a go.

A story about an outcast absolutely down on thier luck. When she happens upon a spell and meets a demon who can change everything for her. The demon recognized her immediately and still makes a deal with her. This definitely steamy.

I read the blurb for this book and was quite interested in it. It took a while for the relationship to build up and was pushing and pull till near the end. It wasn't quite as satisfying as I hoped it would be, in interested in what's going on with the king though.

Taking a Demons Vow

Serenity thinks she has no other choice but to call a demon and make a deal for her survival. Little did she know that the demon needed her.more than she needed him. He's ending.

Meh.

It started out quick paced and interesting, but Sarah J Maas having butchered the word “mate” makes it an unnecessary long read even though it’s a fairly short story. Then there’s the lack of actual valuable information about the characters and the world.. had potential, but isn’t used.

I loved the story and am definitely excited to read more. Some parts did feel a little rushed and could have been drawn out a little more for the sake of explanation, but this is only a prequel and the world building is amazing! I can't wait to see what comes next!
