Nearly Found

Rate this book
AFTER HELPING TO CATCH A SERIAL KILLER last spring, Nearly Boswell isn't looking for her internship in a crime lab to be anything more than an edge on her college applications. She's determined to get out of Sunny View trailer park and prove to herself that she's nothing like her con man father.

But on her first day, a girl from the trailer park turns up dead and an old ally of Nearly's calls in a debt that could jeopardize her future. Then the corpse of a missing person is discovered, buried on a local golf course - and there's a message for Nearly etched into its bones.

Could the corpse be her father, who went missing five years ago? Or is her father a murderer?

As a series of violent crimes with cryptic messages strike a little too close to home, her friends think she's being paranoid. And Reece, her recklessly confident boyfriend, is preoccupied with a new girl as part of his informant work with the police.

Nearly's going to have to risk her future in order to discover the truth about her past in time to stop a killer before he strikes again. And she might have to do it alone.

***
This second book in the Nearly Boswell series is a little less mysterious than the first: clues and "treasure hunts" are there, but less intense and less adrenaline-filled than the first book. This is more focused on people and their mutual feelings, feelings of love, friendship, filial feelings... Of course, you still wonder why the hell Nearly so persists in not immediately informing the police at the first approach from the 'murderer and proceed with some somewhat botched investigations on his own, but that's it... teenagers are strange, you know...

This was the sequel to Nearly Gone, my favorite young adult mystery thriller that I read in 2014. Nearly Found picks up right where Nearly Gone ends, with more trouble following Nearly Boswell. You would think after what she was put through, from people she knew being murdered as a revenge plot for her to almost get killed herself that she would finally be able to catch her breath and get a break? no. Boswell gets thrown deep into another mystery that seems to be connected with what happened to her before. This mystery also found a way to hit home for Nearly, and I just felt so bad for the girl. All she wanted was to finally be able to spend the rest of her school year under the radar without any more mishaps but her father's past is catching up to her.

Nearly Found isn't only about the mystery but also the struggle of Nearly with being in a relationship. Her and Reece seem to be keeping so much from each other just in order to protect their feelings when all I wanted to do is force them to sit down and just talk. Talk about their insecurities, about what is bothering, and to also tell the truth about what is going in each of their own lives. I liked that they didn't have the happily ever after once they got together. They sometimes remind me of Veronica and Logan from VM and I just ship those two so hard. Their relationship and romance was so realistic and had its ups and downs, something I appreciated from Cosminao yet again; her portrayal of a realistic relationship.

As for the mystery, it was as exciting and creepy and mysterious as the first one. Elle Cosimano sure knows how to write them and I honestly hope she continues writing more YA mysteries because her realistic way of writing and brutal honesty of her description of some scenes are what really eleviate the quality of the mystery as a whole. Having a level headed protagonist who makes logical and sane decisions and choices also never hurts. I had a theory about who the killer is but the actual revelation was much bigger than what I had in mind. I def recommend this book to all mystery/thriller fans, whether adult or YA because this will not disappoint in the least bit. I can't wait to find out what is more to come from Elle Cosimano. Here's hoping it is another thriller!

Not nearly as good as Nearly Gone , the first book by the author. I liked reading about Nearly Boswell again but I expected much more.
The story revolves around her father's past and I found it nearly boring. Thanks to her internship in a crime lab this amateur sleuth has access to evidence in a murder investigation and even if I understand this is a work of fiction the low security in that lab seems quite (not nearly) unbelievable.
Perhaps due to my lack of sense of humour when reading the novel I found certain conversation between the main character and her best friend's brother specially annoying .

All in all I was nearly disappointed.

Nearly Found is a fantastic follow up to Nearly Gone, but not quite as stellar. While this book kept me guessing like its predecessor, it lacks the hyped up excitement I felt while reading the first one.

Not a perfect story, but still an enjoyable and intriguing kind. Mini review to come.

Do you like reading books that has your attention and you are always wanting to know what happens next? If so, this is the perfect book for you. Elle Cosimano is the author of, Nearly Found, a sequel to Nearly Gone. She has also written, The Suffering Tree and Holding Smoke. She won Edgar Award for Best Young Adult. Her style is more of a thriller and mystery. There are a few paranormal fiction books, which will make you always make you turn the pages to find out what is next.

The genre of, Nearly Found, is a fiction book. More specifically it is a Mystery. When reading this book, the reader and the characters in the book are trying to figure out the clues, and who is doing these things. It makes the reader wants to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. The purpose of this is to be able to catch the reader's attention. You are wanting to know who is behind all the murders, and why they are doing this. Wondering how the people and everything is connected.

In the beginning of the book there is a prologue, which is like an opening to a story. In the prologue of, Nearly Found, it is a summary of the first book so it can remind you a little of what happened. If you read the second book right after the first one, then you most likely wouldn’t have to read the prologue. If you didn’t read the book until much later, and forgot some details about the first book, I would recommend reading the prologue. It’ll help you understand the book much better. I think this was a great addition in the book.

I do not think that this book was meant for just anyone. In my opinion I loved the book. Some people might not like mystery books, if you are one of those people I don’t think this would be the book for you and it may not interest you while reading it. With the book, if you are not all that into mystery, it is also on the edge of romance too, so if you like romance and a little bit of mystery. This book would be the perfect fit for you.

I'm sure there are probably books out there that are like this one, but to me it was a very unique book. I have never read a book with the same story line. It was very interesting, the clues, the way everything connected. They never left us hanging either which I personally like a lot. The theme of the book stands out so much. The meaning behind everything, is all so confusing but yet understanding. You still wonder how someone could kill so many people and be so evil and smile and laugh about what they did. No matter what their reasoning is it is still messed up to do, but when you hear the reasoning. Everything is all put together, everything is connected somehow.

I rated this book five stars. The two main reasons I rated it a five star, is because the story line, and also I was never disappointed while reading this book. A lot of what the author says is so meaningful and emotional. The feelings that the author is trying to set off in the book is amazing. It pulls you right in, you always wonder what will happen next. I was never once disappointed in the author throughout the book. She had such great details in her writing. I don’t think that throughout the book you would be lost in the reading. You always know who everyone is and what is going on.

The author wrote this book so the readers could not guess what will happen next. Some books are really predictable. With this book you will never expect some of the things from the characters. Throughout the whole book, you will wonder who it is that is killing these people. You may have suspicion in who it is, and you may be good with mysteries and figuring out things. This book will never leave you hanging. If you have liked the things I have described about this book, I think that this will be the perfect book for you.

I received this ARC from a local indie bookstore on Independent Book Store Day, I was in no way compensated for this review.

WARNING: There will be spoilers from Nearly Gone in this review! Read at your own risk if you haven't read Nearly Gone yet!

Elle Cosimano's Nearly Found is the companion to her stellar debut Nearly Gone! I don't know if this is meant to be a series, trilogy, or a duology, but I must say that I enjoyed this one just as much as the first!

I will warn you that despite this being a "companion" if you haven't read Nearly Gone beforehand you will be spoiled entirely. But if for whatever reason you didn't want to read the first one--which you so should!--I would say you could follow along with the story easy enough. Don't get me wrong, huge events happened in Nearly Gone and they're referenced here, but basically to make life easier, read the first book because it was soooo awesome!

It's been a few months since TJ's conviction. Nearly's life is finally starting to turn towards normal, but there have been dramatic changes. Her friends, Jeremy and Anh had given her the cold shoulder for months. Kids at school still give her odd looks. And then there's her relationship with Reece which starts to bring up new complications as well. Now Nearly is about to start her senior year of high school and one of the first things she wants to do is participate in an internship where she would work in a forensics lab. She still plans to go to college and will need money for that.

It's not long though before things start getting dicey. Jeremy receives a strange note, than Vince, then Eric her lab partner in her Computer class, and then Nearly gets one herself. The feeling of deja vu hits and soon Nearly finds herself in another dangerous mystery with a killer leaving more cryptic clues for her. Some of the clues go back to her theory with the Periodic Table but the other clues prove more difficult in a sense to undercover their hiding meaning. I won't get into that, best to let you all bask in the mystery as well!

And what a mystery it was! I felt like I was devising my own suspicions for this one, but again, I was still far from the truth. This one brings back the mystery of Nearly's father and the alleged poker club he was apart of. Nearly finds that she and her classmates have more in common then she thought possible. And I have to say again, wow!

This mystery felt so vast compared to the last one! There's more going on this time though. All these different occurrences happening and eventually at the end, we see how it all fits together, but prior to that I was totally at a lost! But that's not to say it was a bad thing either! I love mysteries like that. Ones that have you trying to piece together every bit of evidence and possible evidence! It's exhilarating!

Although I was sad to see Reece missing for most of the first half. He gets a new assignment at a high school across town and it puts a clink into his relationship with Nearly. I felt conflicted over that too. I understood why Nearly was hurt by some of Reece's actions, but at the same time, I felt like smacking her a bit and saying, "remember he's still a narc?!" But again, I understood why Nearly was hurt because her points were valid. Basically it was a conflicting mess! LOL! But there were still stolen moments, moments when you saw Reece and you knew the truth and I must say, I loved those moments!

The final reveal at the ending was yet another shocker! I saw bits of it coming, but I was still struggling to put together the whys of it all. It was quite shocking and scary even, in a way. What I still want to know more about is Nearly's father. I feel like we keep getting hints of who he was and what all he did, but there's still the question of where is he? Will we ever see him? Will he own up to what he did? What's worse is that I can't tell if this is a series yet. This is called a companion to the first book. Right there in purple and white (the colors of my ARC). So I am dying to know if there's more! It's going to be a guessing game from this point out! I just hope that there's more, because this series...duology?...or whatever we want to call it is freaking amazing!

In this one we see more characters and I loved watching them grow and develop as well. People we thought we knew before in the first book we see in a different light in this one! I can't say much about it, because again, I'd rather let you experience it for yourselves, but I just hope that this isn't the end and we can see more of it in future reads!

Nearly Found was creeptastically amazing! I love the edge, the mystery and the creepiness. I love that Nearly has a special talent that makes her not quite normal. I love the bits of romance filtered into the pages. I love it all! The suspense, the danger, everything! This is one series I highly recommend to all mystery/thriller readers out there!

*whew* This one sure had it's twists and turns. Nearly Found was an improvement from the first book, Nearly Gone and surprisingly had a much better story. Mind you, there were some flaws with it as well as unnecessary drama involved, but I liked the story as a whole.

A few months have passed since the events of the previous book. Nearly, who had failed to earn her scholarship, is now taking an internship at a forensics crime lab so it'll look good on college applications. She finally thinks her life is going back to normal. But then, not long after she starts interning, a body of a girl is found. Later, a corpse is found in a golf field with a message etched onto the bone. That message is meant for Nearly. When she realizes that both are connected, she is faced with the idea that someone is trying to cause more trouble with her. Not only that, but it seems her father, who had left a few years ago, may have something to do with it. She, along with some help from Reece, Jeremy, Vince, and Eric, must solve whatever is happening before more bodies start showing up.

From the start, I could see some improvement with the mystery aspect of the story. The stakes are higher than ever and Nearly is caught in the middle of it. And it would've been better had it not been for the flaws.

For the purpose of the review, I will not go into in-depth detail about the plot since this is a sequel, but I will talk about the good and the bad.

Let's start off with the bad. Nearly is still the same in the previous book. Not making good decisions and making some things worse than they already are. She had this need to make any situation seem like it's the end of the world for her. Imagine if you accidentally spill some paint on your pants. The stain isn't that big or noticeable, so it isn't that big of a deal. Nearly, on the other hand, would make it seem like it is a big deal. There are points in the story where Nearly was like this and it bugged me. I know we sometimes make a big deal out of something small, but she does it constantly to the point where it got annoying.

She also makes the same mistake from the previous novel, not telling anyone that her life may be in possible danger and making dumb decisions. Nearly is book smart, but not smart enough to understand common sense.

Then there's the big elephant in the room: The unnecessary drama between Nearly and Reece. As I said, I won't go much into the plot, but the drama between these two was just UGH! Lots of miscommunication between them leads to some very awkward and moody scenes. Look, I get that there can be some miscommunication between couples. But when they don't sit down and talk about it like any regular person should, things escalate from that. Just sit down and talk. Is that simple to do, Nearly and Reece?

Now let's get to the good parts.

The mystery was an improvement from the last book. I was intrigued with what was going on and wondering who the real culprit was. Like the first book, science played a role in helping solve the mystery. I have to give props to Elle Cosimano for doing this. I'm not a science fan, but it was a good addition to the story.

I've mentioned this before, but if a book manages to keep me entertained, it get's a fair chance of being a good book. Don't get me wrong, this book was not bad, but it wasn't good. But it was good enough for a 3 star.

Would I recommend this series? Not really. It has it's good parts but I can see how the negatives outweigh the positives. So unless you really want to read it, by all means, go get it. You might like it better than I did. At best, this duology (I hope it's a duology) is fine. Just fine.

Verdict

A good premis but Nearly didn't really improve as a character all that much. Add in the unnecessary drama and angst, this was a 'meh' book.

Thanks for reading my review!

Nearly Gone surprised me by being a mystery with strong voice. I ate it up. Nearly Found on the other hand, I tripped through in stops and starts. I finished four other books before I made it through this one. I wasn’t in the mood, and it didn’t suck me in the way the first book did. Where I hoped Nearly Found would improve on Nearly Gone, I feel like it was a big backwards step in terms of believability.

Right at the beginning, I became concerned for Nearly Found. Though Nearly’s voice is still great, she wasn’t changed enough. It’s a couple months after the events of the first book, during which a classmate killed a bunch of people close to her and tried to frame her for it, and Nearly is fine. Actually, she’s totally blissed out on her relationship with Reece and excited to start a new internship in a forensics lab.

There is no way that Nearly could go through the events of Nearly Gone and be so unaffected. She should be in counseling, a subject that’s broached by Gena a couple of times but solidly rebuffed by Nearly. She’s fine, she swears, and she actually is. I found that completely unbelievable. I kept waiting for it to hit her, but there was no trauma lingering from those events. This made the novel feel so much less character-driven.

I also thought it was absurd that a girl who had just been through all that would be accepted for that forensics internship so soon after, especially since they had never taken a high school intern before. While Nearly’s definitely smart enough for it and forensics might be a great career for her in the future, this didn’t work for me at all. Plus, it’s so obviously a plot point, since nothing in this book would have happened without her access to stuff in the forensics lab and police station. She is constantly given tasks she shouldn’t be: assisting with a corpse on the first day, putting prints into the database unsupervised, and assisting on a crime scene.

In Nearly Gone, Nearly having to do her own research made sense. She was being framed for the murders of the people she tutored, and the cops had ignored her when she went to them early on with her suspicions. In Nearly Found, however, she has connections in the police and in the forensics lab, yet she still decides to research the new murder and mysterious notes herself. She doesn’t ask for help, and, even though she solves it, she should probably go to juvie for the things she did. Most notably, she steals evidence in a case from the forensics lab, a theft for which she magically does not get caught; in fact, when it’s discovered, no one ever even considers that it could have been her. Apparently, they didn’t even bother to investigate that she was close to the suspect in the case.

The romance bothers me even more in Nearly Found too. Reece and Nearly remind me heavily of Tris and Four in Insurgent. They do not trust one another, so they keep fighting when the secrets out. They keep promising to do better but continue to keep secrets. Nearly alternates between complete trust and mushy love feelings for Reece and suspecting him of murder or infidelity. These two are not going to make it, so I really wish this ship had been put out of its misery.

As much as I wanted to like Nearly Found, I really couldn’t get behind the teen-led investigation in this book. It felt way too orchestrated and like they conveniently had all the skills they needed.

4 stelle e mezzo

Nearly Found is a solid sequel to Nearly Gone. While I didn’t love it as much as it’s predecessor, it captured my attention and kept me guessing until the very end.

Nearly Boswell is back and better than ever. With her tormentor behind bars her life should be on it’s way back to normal. However, that is not the case. She, along with many people in her life, have started receiving messages in places that should not be accessible to people; locked cars, bedrooms, and other private places. It’s up to Nearly, Reece, and her fellow classmates to figure out what is going on before bodies start piling up.

Nearly and Reece are back and their relationship is still very new. Nearly is starting school, a new internship, and on top of all that she is once again involved in some crazy stuff. She can’t ever seem to keep herself out of trouble. As for Reece, he has a new assignment that keeps him from spending a lot of time with Nearly and puts their new relationship on the rocks. To be completely honest, I was a little skeptical about him this time around. He acted quite sketchy at times. I wanted to love him like I did in the first book but he made it difficult.

This time around Nearly had a lot more allies, even if some of them were reluctant to team up with her. Alex and Gena are back but they don’t have prominent roles. I still loved them though, especially Alex. Jeremy and Anh are also back and I had some serious issues with them. They both blamed Nearly from what happened at the end of the first book and pretty much dropped her as a friend. I hated that. Vince was back and a bit less of a douchebag. Lonny was my favorite though. He has a unique relationship with Nearly. They have more in common than either would like to admit.

My biggest problem with Nearly Found was how much crap Nearly got away with. She was an intern with the forensics lab and she totally took advantage of the access that granted her. She should have been caught and in serious trouble many times but she somehow got away with it. It was very unrealistic. Her internship was a pretty fascinating part of the story though.

The mystery was just as good as the first book. I was completely unable to see the connections. I had no clue how everything was going to tie together. There were so many times when I just wanted to skip to the end to see who it was but I forced myself not to. I devoured the book in one day though because I could not stop reading without figuring out who the killer was. Good luck guessing this one.

As for Nearly, her development as a character and with her ability was fantastic. She is more open to touching people and she is really trying to learn to deal with her ability without pushing people away.

Overall, Nearly Found was a wonderful conclusion to this duology. I look forward to reading Elle Cosimano’s next book. I highly recommend this duology to suspense fans.

Nearly Found is the second in a duology… I think that’s all there will be. I really ended up loving the first book in this series so I was excited to get my hands on the ARC of book 2.

This picks up shortly after book 1 ends and I liked that there wasn’t a huge gap in time here. As I read, I found that while enjoyable and suspenseful… it just didn’t keep me invested in the story quite as much as the first book did.

First of all, Nearly and Reece… I really adored these two together and with their relationship still in its early stages, there are things happening that really have Nearly questioning where she stands with Reece. And this in turn sucks because it ends up keeping these two apart for a lot of the story, or at least on edge with each other and questioning their relationship and I didn’t want that. I wanted to love them together and I wanted to swoon over Reece and I wanted more kissing. Yes, I said it.

The mystery here is solid and by that I just mean that I was guessing who was involved and what was going on until the very end. Nothing was predictable and I was suspicious of everyone!

Jeremy and Ahn… I have thoughts about these two, but none of them are pleasant – I was super pissed off about how they treated Nearly for most of this book. But we have lots of other secondary characters to enjoy like Lonny! I loved him and his relationship with Nearly a lot.

Overall, a fantastic read… not quite as engrossing as the first book in this series, but still worth a read if you love mystery and suspense.

Thank you Penguin Books for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I thought the first book, Nearly Gone, was better, but this was still an intriguing read.

While I admire Nearly's (yes, that is her stupid birth name) crazy intelligence, some of her distrust of her boyfriend Reece seemed forced. Heck, their entire relationship is forced. Heteronormativity, am I right?

Review
I liked this book a lot. I liked that she fixed her friendship with her best friend and she made some new friends. It was nice to have a happy ending instead of a terrible ending leaving you wanting more, like the previous book. However, I did not like that Nearly was using people to get what she wanted.

Plot
This book is about Nearly Boswell who is still recovering from the deaths of her friends that one of her classmates killed. While on the road to recovery she has the strange feeling that the serial killer is not done with her yet, because bad things have been happening to people she likes. She uncovers things she never knew about her father and makes unlikely friendships with some of her classmates. She also fixes her relationship with Reece and he becomes a close alli in one of her plans. At the end of the book the bad guys get caught and everything is well again.

Characterization
One of the more noticable changes in a character was Vince. In the beginning of the book Vince was very rude and untrustworthy, then as the book went on and after he got wrapped up into Nearly's problems he started showing that he wasn't really that mean after all. At the end of the book he became friends with Nearly and was not mean anymore to her.

Recommendations
I would recommend this book to people who are like chemistry and forensic science because the book has a lot of references to that in it. The book would be good for girls in high school because there is some romance involved in this book.

3.5 stars.

I think I would've rated this higher if I had reviewed it closer to having read it. However, looking back both of these books didn't make that much of an impression on me. Cosimano does have a good knack for descriptions though - I did jump a bit a few times.

Nearly wasn't that much of a favorite for me. She had a good head on her shoulders and she acted her age (which is always a huge pet peeve of mine when 17 year olds act 25) but there was always something kind of missing for me. (Heh, Nearly there.) I don't know - maybe it wasn't the character but the plot really. I feel like her Dad plot with the mystery aspects didn't really entice me as much as the first book. I mostly read and finished it because a) I had already bought the hardbacks and b) because I don't not finish series.

I think the romance this time around hit me more in the gut than the first one - which is good! They're definitely a lot more realistic and accurate to their age in this one. I do have to say the Reece + Thimble metaphor that Lonny so graciously put in our heads stuck with me and I do have to say I agree.

Again, this book had one of my biggest pet peeves and some of the characters acted pretty douchey-ish and I didn't like that.

Wouldn't reread it, would recommend it.

Nearly Found is an excellent of when the sequel is better than the first book! I loved loved loved this book—like I could read this book twice and a row and still enjoy the ride all over again! Elle Cosimano has become one of my favorite authors and I continuously buy her books.

Heroine: Nearly Boswell (love her name) changed a lot from the first book. She grew as a person while juggling with lots of internal conflict because of what she experienced from the first book. Even so, in this book, she battles her demons while trying to solve the mystery, and I liked that the read could see her getting stronger—tougher emotionally as the book progresses.

Nearly, like in the first book, does continue to make some really stupid choices, but she’s a teen who’s way over her head. She’s entitled to make them—but what I liked was that she learned from her mistakes and always did better the next time.

Hero: Hot! Gorgeous! My type of bad boy! In the first book, I didn’t like Reece too much. He kind of turned me off at times with the way he used to treat Nearly sometimes---even pissed me off, but he redeemed himself in the sequel. We got to see more of him—and got to find out how he actually felt about Nearly, which was really sweet!

Baddie(s): I’m not going to reveal the ending, but the person behind everything didn’t surprise me. I guessed it about halfway through the book, but why they did really caught me off guard.

High Points:

Characters: I really enjoyed getting reacquainted with all the secondary characters from the first book. Like Lonny (one of my favorite characters), Jeremy, Gina…etc.

Romance: I loved Reece & Nearly’s relationship. They balance each other very well. Yeah, they had some ups and downs, but that only added to the tension of the story. Together, they make a really great couple!

Knowledge: I actually learned many things from this book involving forensics and science. Like it was really cool to read about how investigators get fingerprints off murder weapons and match them to suspects!

Low Points:

Predictability: Reading the book carefully (learned to do this from the first book), it was semi-easy to figure out the ending. But I also read a lot of mystery books too. Even so, there was still tons of twists, conflict, tension and excitement! I still highly recommend :) The book was seriously addicting! I read page one and was instantly hooked, and I didn’t stop until I was at the end.

Nearly Found took me on an exciting, dark, and awesome ride and I really hope that there’s a book #3!

I really enjoyed the first book, Nearly Found, so I was excited to continue on Nearly's adventures. And for the most part, this sequel lived up to my expectations.
The Good:
- Nearly's life is still messy, and she's still haunted by the events of the first book. The fallout is pretty on par to what I'd expect.
- Nearly's grown closer to her mom in the intervening time between the two books, which was nice.
- She's going after an internship in the forensic crime lab of the local Sheriff's station. I don't know how realistic this is, and we never get told much about her motivation (aside from needing to look good for college, and being a chemistry whiz). It makes some convenient plot points BUT it's also fascinating the level of detail Cosimano goes into with it.
- There's a lot of lack of closure on some key things, much like real life, which created a low-key tension throughout the plot.
- Nearly is impulsive, brash, untrusting, and *aware* of when she's being unreasonable. I didn't find her actions nearly as frustrating as I would of she were less self-aware. Instead, they came across as natural.
- This time, the cast is more ensemble, and I love an ensemble cast.

The Less-Good:
- Nearly basically sacrifices her internship, and we never really visit the fallout of that. Is she still going to get into a good college? I'm a nerd, I want to know what's happening here.
- Compared with the first book, there are way fewer red herrings, which makes it less fun.
- Spoiler Alert:
- There's some fridging that happens. I understand why she chose to do it, but it still bothers me when the boys survive but the girls get murdered to move a plot forward.
- The ending felt really rushed, for some reason. Basically, from Chapter 30 onward was a galloping roll of plot dump.

Overall, I'd call it a 3.5-star read, worth picking up if you enjoyed Nearly Gone, just to spend some more time with the characters, but not a must-read.

My initial thought was that this was going to be like Barry Lyga's series, but there's less about the serial killer's thoughts than hoped for. There is some forensics, and more would have been great, but mostly this is character and confusion about relationships (especially the relationship between Nearly and Reece, which seems to be forced more for plot purposes than anything else). There was also the completely unnecessary addition of Nearly's ability to sense what people are thinking/feeling when she touches them - why? what real purpose does that serve, given the plot and needs of the mystery?
