Rate this book
History was repeating itself

Diana Prentice needed a break from the power games of the corporate world. She picked the charming mountain town of Fulbrook Corners as her sanctuary, not knowing that mysterious forces had lured her to the scene of an age-old struggle. Was it the local legend of the Chained Lady and her warrior that was so unsettling to her...or the disconcerting presence of native Colby Savagar?

Soon the sheer fierceness of his passion overwhelmed her and left her in turmoil. For she knew somehow there had been another place, another time when he had taken by force what she now gave willingly....

I came across these at a paperback swap store. They were on a cart out front for 25 cents each. I've read Jayne Ann Krentz novels and her Amanda Quick historicals and really enjoyed them. So, I thought it would be fun to read some of her early work. This was a Harlequin Temptation novel and evidently an experiment in starting a series. This was book one, the second one is called Dreams book 2.
Reading historical romances published in the late 80's and 90's is one thing, but contemporary books published in that time frame doesn't work too well. I had to remind myself that this was published nearly 25 years ago!! So, dated? Yes. Very!
Instantly, I didn't like Colby. Way too " Macho". Diana, was a career woman at a crossroads, very independant. But, she still allowed Colby to get away with having to be the one to make the all the rules. She fought back, but then always gave in.
The theme that got hammered home was that a woman should not settle for marriage straight out of high school. Go to college and set yourself set up in a career before thinking of marriage and family. Not bad advise. But, it was a little overkill at times. But, back in 1988, this was a real hot button issue.
This first book could be termed romantic suspense with a slight paranormal undertone. There is an old legend that Colby heard all his life and he tells Diana the story. They both are disturbed by the legend enough to have dreams about it.
The other issue is that someone is playing pranks on Diana, and when they think they have the problem solved there is a question remaining as to weather or not the situation was actually fully resolved. There is a cliffhanger at the end, so you will want to be able to get the second book or you will be left without all the answers.
Being one of JAK earlier novels, the writing isn't up to her more experienced novels, so keep that in mind also. I will of course read the second book too to find out what happend with Colby and Diana. I believe the second book deals more with the paranormal aspects.
So, stay tuned.

To be honest, I both like and dislike this book. The main character Colby is a chauvinistic jerk at times. He likes giving orders and expecting Diana, our leading lady, to do as he says. He even decides when an argument ends, and assumes that when he’s over being upset or angry, everyone else is as well. But at other times I really like Colby. He’s not afraid to show his vulnerability when dealing with Diana, nor is he afraid to show his deep love for his son. He’s loyal, protective, and caring.

On the other hand, Diana frustrates the heck out of the reader. She knows she loves Colby, but fights him at every turn. Her view of male/female relationships is a little skewed and she takes everything between herself and Colby as a challenge or competition. Nevertheless, she’s an interesting and likable character. She’s insecure and questions everything, and she’s so afraid of getting hurt that the reader just wants to reach out to hug & reassure her. One thing’s for certain, the plot’s twists and turns along with the character’s personal relationships and growth makes the reader want to come back and finish the series.

This excellent book is one of Jayne Ann Krentz' early romantic suspense novels. Very well written, it is also an unusual tale that weaves two stories into one: of enduring love that spans the ages.
Set in the small Oregon town of Fullbrook Corners, there's an old legend that entangles the dreams of the two main characters.
Horror novelist Colby Savager has returned to his home town to finish his latest book. There he becomes entranced with Diana Prentice, a woman whose professional life is in flux. As Colby attempts to seduce Diana, he soon discovers that she, too, has odd dreams.
The location of his great seduction is Chained Lady Falls, which is also the source of their dreams. The two love stories (one from the past and the other in the present) soon intertwine. At the same time, someone is playing a dangerous game against the lovers, a game that could leave one or both of them dead.
This is part one of two Dreams novels (originally called Shared Dreams), but luckily I have them both.

Colby is such an 80s alphahole. There are so many points where I just sighed at how he responded to things and what he said. But he was charming sometimes.

Diana is very much a Career Woman tm. I liked her, even if she bent to Colby's will a few too many times. I understood a lot of her reservations and did not really understand Colby's frustrations half the time.

I don't want to spoil it, but the fantasy element to this is one of the wildest things I have EVER read in a contemporary. Blood waterfalls! Curses! Aphrodisiac caves! Incredible stuff, honestly. I have theories about the villain for the suspense aspect in the sequel, as well.

Will the sequel tie this up in a way that bumps it up or down? Only time will tell.

This was a pretty good book. This didn't quite pull me in, but it was something I enjoyed reading. The characters were good, but a little different than what I guess I'm used to. I think since this was written quite a while ago, the way things were worded or tended to lean is different than I'm used to. But overall, I liked reading this and am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book. The legend is definitely a good addition and kept me on my toes about that. The characters were diverse and contained a variety of personalities. There were some spooky parts too. Overall, a good read, but not something that would be a fallback book. Good for reading anytime.

What a joke. Why is this two books and not one? It was liked having a forced intermission. I am pretty sure I had read these ages ago too, but since I couldn't exactly remember the "outcome" I went ahead and finished it.
