Prey

Christa, a shy college student, is interning at a Chicago law firm. One morning, she spots a mysterious stranger across the street from her office. This seemingly casual incident tears Christa from her world and sends her into a terrifying struggle with the remorseless immortal, Mack.

Mack comes from another time and place, not so long ago in years, but very far from Christa’s urban world. Mack came of age in the era of bootlegging, where the strong took what they needed to survive, and he has become interested in Christa.

On a trip to Europe, Christa comes across evidence of the supernatural, which she tries hard to ignore, but on her return she ends up being trapped in a clandestine network where human blood is farmed to satisfy vampire thirst.

Soon she becomes caught in a power struggle between two covens, a fight that threatens her mortal existence and forces her to make choices leading her into a deeper understanding of humanity and her own soul.

This is not a love story.

Prey is a novella and has a word count of 35,000 words.

I'm not a big fan of 1st person narrative, but then again, it did seem like the best route to take with this story. I found myself becoming more and more interested in the characters and what was going to happen to them. I thought the writing was good and the story was well thought out and research especially of Michigan was excellent. I may not recommend this to all my friends, for many will not read 1st person narrative or vampire books, but I would recommend to anyone who likes a well thought out story with interesting characters. I didn't expect the ending and maybe felt a bit cheated? Perhaps there is a book 2??

I won this book from a 'First Reads' giveaway. The author signed the inside cover and even wrote a letter to me, which is awesome in itself. The book itself is a quick read {I read it in one day when I stayed home with a sick kiddo} I wasn't expecting this book and really had a hard time relating to the main character but it kept my interest enough to finish. I would have never guessed this was a vampire book.

~ARC FOR HONEST REVIEW~

Not what I was expecting when I started reading this book. But the more I read the more I wanted to know. It's on the dark side some and not your normal romance. But it was good enough to keep turning the pages.

I received a copy of this book as part of the Goddess Fish Promotions Blog Tour.

This book was a little slow getting off the ground for me. We spend a lot of time with Christa going through her everyday routine. From the beginning she has a feeling of being followed, and during her first encounter with the stranger she feels is following her, she gets her boss involved. Soon after her boss disappears, but leaves an envelope filled with cash, plane tickets, and a cryptic message for Christa to use it to take her dream vacation to Paris. Even during her “vacation” it seems we spent a lot of time with Christa just “doing things”. It wasn’t until the second half of the book (and it’s a novella, so truthfully the second half comes pretty quick), her trip home, that the pacing picks up.

I’m still not sure how I feel about Christa. In parts I really like her and in other parts you really just want to smack her. But, considering the circumstances that she’s placed in, I think she’s a pretty strong character. Mack comes across as a complete ass for most of the book, but it seems like there is something more there, something that he isn’t letting Christa see. There are a slew of other characters, not really all that important, but they all play pivotal roles. Each character is well thought out and developed as fully as a novella will allow them to be.

The pacing in the beginning was slow, but there wasn’t anything wrong with the story; it just takes a little while for things to get going. And the story itself is definitely a different twist from the standard vampire story. They don’t sparkle, they aren’t trying to take over the world, they aren’t in a secret underground battle with other supernatural beings… but they are “farming” humans. It has the potential to be a very dark story if only it were a little longer. But overall I really liked the story.

The ending isn’t a cliffhanger really, but it definitely left me wanting for more. I really felt like once I started to get into this, it just ended. I can always hold out hope that there is more to come!

If you love the vampire, supernatural, thriller genre and are looking for a quick read… give this one a shot.

This book was so very different than I expected. I understood it was not a love story but mentally I keep looking for the love story. I really enjoyed the book. It was a quick read with short chapters. I knew what was unraveling within the plot but I kept expecting a different result. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a quick and enjoyable read.

It was good up until the point the protagonist got turned into a vampire. Then it was just pages upon pages of describing how feral she got, until "the male" saved her. Not a love story my ass...

J'ai bien aimée ce livre. Il a été comme une friandise. Je l'ai dévoré. J'ai même été frustrée que la fin arrive si tôt. J'aurais aimé quelques pages en plus voire une suite ;)
