One year after vanquishing the plague vampires and restoring order to Spellcrest Academy, the student body is trying to move forward. A solemn memorial is unveiled to honor those lost in the brutal conflict with the vampires. Yet the scars run deep---literally for the newly turned vampire students struggling with their agonizing transitions.
And everyone’s favorite little elf, Nym, is one of them.
They face escalating tensions from those who believe vampires don't belong at the prestigious academy of magic. Maeve will do whatever she can to help and protect her friends, but troubling Divination readings warn of more turmoil ahead she can't ignore.
Maeve doesn’t want to believe in the Divination arts, but as problems compound, she can’t continue denying her readings. It’s always been a challenge for her to stay out of trouble, and her sapient year proves to be no different.
A new adventure begins with the emotionally charged seventh book of the Spellcrest Academy series.

We are back for a new and exciting adventure! There’s new challenges to be faced despite still dealing with past events but the gang is back together and ready to crack on! I love seeing the characters grow and develop not just in themselves but also in their friendships and relationships . There’s more danger coming, more action, so much more drama but it’s off to an entertaining start and I am anxious to see where the year takes us!
The gang is back for another school year. They are still dealing with the events of last year but they are strong. Fears need to be overcome if they are to survive in the world. Maeve is challenged in every aspect of her life.
It’s great to see the group (Ivanic, Maeve, Nym, & Razielle) mature. Each one handles their issues differently but you can relate to them. I enjoyed the start of their Sapient year. Wondering how the rest of the year will be. An awesome series.
Absolutely necessary to binge read. Things are getting back to normal although slowly. Still danger lurks. Delighted to have another book in this series to read.
I've been hoping and patiently waiting for more Spellcrest Academy for at least a year. And now I've binged Sapient Curse in a day. Annnnd, of course it's an arc, so now I have to wait even longer for the next one... But truly I'm just happy Mike has decided to return to this magical universe.
Maeve is now in her Sapient Year at Spellcrest Academy. And... it literally takes one day for her to get back on her bullsh*t. That girl is a trouble magnet. Somewhere in the distance you can hear Taylor Swift's voice.
Unlike previous volumes there isn't as much action in Sapient Curse. And it works because the characters are all at a point that they need to stop and process and figure out what comes next for them as a group and as individuals. Nym really gets to shine a little more brightly as she comes to terms with becoming a vampire.
I'm highkey tired of Maeve and Devon's toxic relationship drama. And there is way too much talk about boobs. But Sapient Curse does a great job of setting up the arc for the next Big Bad. And I can't wait to see where this new adventure takes us.
I have been looking forward to reading this book or what seems like several years, pre-pandemic years. Talk about withdrawals. And now, I just finished reading this book and this has to be the best one in the series. After reading the afterwards from Mr. Pierce about how writing this book was harder, it makes this book even more amazing.
Maeve and her friends (Nym, Razielle and Ivanic plus others) are back for their third year at Spellcrest. The book starts a year after the battle with the plague vampires so we missed the first quarter. Not only are the classes more intense, but the relationships get more intense, especially for Nym. And Maeve and Devon, more on that later. Nym is having a hard time with transitioning into a vampire. And someone(s?) doesn't want her there. Maeve and the rest of the gang try to help her but no one is able to help her except ?????? No spoiler alert.
The toughest class is one where they each enter their individual pods and then transition to a virtual reality where they must battle their individual demons. To their death. In Maeve's case, it involves dealing with the murder of her parents when she was seven during a robbery where their killer becomes her demon, Tarquin. And this becomes a daily battle for Maeve and her fellow Sapient's.
Another thing Maeve has to deal with is the new Teaching Assistant in one of her classes, A wolf shifter named Clara. And she just happens to be Devon's ex from his time at Spellcrest before he met Maeve. Talk about drama.
Reading this book makes me even more anxious for the next book. But I can be patient. Or not.
I received an ARC ebook from the author. This review is voluntary and honest. I highly recommend this series if you are not already reading them.
I took a pretty long break between books here so it took me extra long to remember even who anyone was at the start. First, let me acknowledge that this ends in a big cliffhanger, so if that is going to piss you off, wait until we have book 8 out and read for you to devour.
We join Maeve, now heading into her Sapient year at the academy with her friends. One friend has just been turned into a vampire. Her boyfriend is up to shady business with an ex. Oh, and now they all have to go through super traumatic virtual reality devices as part of their routine classes, so everybody is more than a little on edge. The "big bad" of this book revolves around a mysterious man who ran into Devon and Maeve on a training exercise, then attacked the crew when they ventured outside the safety of the school's walls.
It really doesn't sound like a lot when I spell it out like that, and I guess it wasn't. A majority of the time was spent on adapting to changes (i.e. of the vampire variety) and the interpersonal drama that is being a school aged person dating someone older. With all the build-up to the ending here, it was mostly clues, hints, and the usual dangerous threat to Maeve, but it did feel relatively low stakes this time for some reason.
This series is fantastic to read, and takes you on a journey that is up and down and around so many twists and turns. It keeps you guessing and turning the pages!
