Lt. Commander Hrothgar Tebrey has returned to duty in Special Operations, but it is becoming harder for him to fight in the name of a government he no longer feels is just – one that orders purges against its own citizens.

Meanwhile, dissention is growing within the ranks of the Earth Federation Fleet. Ships continue to go missing, and the military needs someone to blame. A war with the Sentient Concord seems inevitable.

But if the Earth Federation destroys the Sentient Concord, who will fight the true enemy? For the Sentient Concord is the only government that knows the truth about the hellish Theta entities...

…Entities that want Tebrey dead, and are willing murder entire worlds to make it happen.

"I'm a mouse in a mechanical man's body." Okay, that was Pinky and the Brain, not me.

I am a writer, archaeologist, anthropologist, and geologist. I currently live in New Mexico, where all the cool kids hang out, with too many cats. (is there such a thing?)

Like most authors, I've had an eclectic career path. I've worked as a retail gofer, a food service monkey, brute laborer, a rennie, a writer for the RPG industry, and many other rewarding jobs that didn't pay enough to feed me or my cats.

I really love archaeology, and no, I haven't found any tombs with ancient evils lurking. I plan to keep it that way.

I will not dig on Mars, and I will NOT go to Zahadoom.

mmm I bought this because I liked Book 1, The Remnant, enough to want to continue.
Unfortunately, I liked Book 1 because of the Tebrey and his neo-panther, who kinda take a backseat here. I mean, they're still important, but... not quite in focus? If that makes sense? This book is really much more military sci-fi than I prefer, which is... why I'm gonna stop reading the series here.

Read this book straight after the first volume, The Remnant. As I liked The Remnant very much, I went and bought this one immediately, and it has not disappointed me.

The same strength of story line, well defined characters and more twists than your average roller coaster could shake a stick at, this is one very tasty read that will have you wanting more all the time. At certain points the massive input of new names and changing scenarios was a bit daunting, but I think the story was pulled through them well enough not to be too bothered by it.
I like the hard style SF and this book has ample interesting technologies in it, and describes a fair few of them really convincingly.

What I did notice though, was the spelling and grammar errors, which were more numerous in this book compared to the previous one. I cannot give 5 stars because of this, otherwise I would have.

Still you will like Tebrey, and his neo panther, well enough to forgive these editing lapses, but I hope it will not be the same in the next book, which I will also buy when it is available.

Paul B Spence might just be an author that could produce a catalogue of enjoyable science fiction, time will tell.

The best of the three so far, for my money, and even with some typos and editing issues, a great, enjoyable read. Nicely done, and the chances the writer takes almost always pay off the reader in this one.
