Fred is an unusual monster. After leaving scare school he realises that he doesn't want to scare little boys and girls. How can he show his face in Monster Land now? Everyone will laugh at him! Then he meets a little boy called Dale, who comes up with an unexpected plan.
This is a fantastic children's book for boys and girls aged 0 to 11. I loved it!
Fred is a wonderful character. He has just graduated from scare school, but realises that scaring is not for him. I loved this gentle monster. His heart is kind and good.
Dale is a human boy, and Fred's first scare after leaving school. I loved this character's compassion. His plan to help Fred is quite clever!
I loved this little story about a monster who doesn't want to be scary. Not every monster has a wish to frighten others or be bad. Fred is one such monster. The author has written this story with a rhyming pattern that flows beautifully and rolls off the tongue. I would love to read this out loud to a youngster, because the cadence just lends itself to being spoken. Unfortunately, my two oldest nephews are a bit too old for this story, and my two youngest nephews live too far away. However, this doesn't stop me from reading books like these, because I like to read them. I was also impressed with the illustrations. The artist, Pippa Cornell, has complimented the story with some deliciously cute drawings. They describe the story very well for those children who cannot read. These could also allow a child to create their own story, if they so desire.
Tony Gilbert has written a fantastic tale of friendship and caring. I love his writing style, which also flows wonderfully. I have read one other book by this author, and I look forward to reading many more of them.
I highly recommend this book to children aged 0 to 11 years and to adults who, like me, love children's or young adult books. - Lynn Worton
Book review of Super Fred by Tony Gilbert (Author), Pippa Cornell (Illustrator) Enchanting wonderfully crafted tale. Five stars. Being a child that grew up believing that monsters lived under by bed, I was instant drawn to this book which is beautifully and colourful illustrated by Pippa. Tony has a genius for writing for small children to captivate not only them but the parents for are reading the story which flows for page to page delightfully carried by the wonderful illustrations. A rhythmic story about an unexpected friendship between Fred a monster and a little boy named Dale. Their story leads them to monster land, Fred hides Dale in his fur. They meet Fred’s friend Bob who is the scariest monster. I think this book will encourage children to want to read, I like that there is counting in it also. I loved all the descriptions of the monsters, ‘googly eyes and flappy ears’ with are very engaging for children. I can’t wait to have grandchildren so I can read it out aloud to them. ***** 5 Stars Tony Gilbert the author of Super Fred was a wonderful creation of a monster and a boy.......August 25, 2014
A complete 10! ********** Tony Gilbert the author of Super Fred was a wonderful creation of a monster and a boy. Fred the monster wasn't into scaring people, but it was his job and he did complete monster school. I thought this book was excellent, the extra touches as the: certification of completion, the text in the clouds and the illustrations were awesome. This book will help little ones that are afraid of the dark and monsters under the bed. The author did a great job with making this phrase in a child's life fun and easy to accept. Wonderful! Excellent! Perfect illustrations! Complete 10! **********
Super Fred is an epic poem about a monster unable to scare a little boy. Together they concoct a plan to convince Fred's friend Bob, the scariest monster (as scary as one of my genetically modified slugs?), that Fred is much scarier. Dale, the little boy, and Fred then strike up a great friendship. The rhyme is superb with great fluidity and enough new vocabulary for children to learn. There's gentle humour throughout and a wonderful underlying message about friendship. The illustrations work well with the rhyme, with its soft colours and fresh look. I'd imagine the print version of this must be very nice and do the illustrations justice. I highly recommend this to all the slugs out there.
Tony Gilbert is extending the paw of understanding to monsters. Having just read his book, Doodeedoo I was delighted to discover 'Super Fred.' Dear Fred. He's graduated from monster school, he's got the certificate and everything, but he doesn't want to scare children. Hugs, Fred. You are my kind of monster.
This is a delightful book, beautifully illustrated by Pippa Cornell. The rhymes make it ideal for early readers. Plus great news for parents as this is the kind of story that will overcome children's bedtime fears.
When Fred ( A monster) decides that he wants to change his monster ways, it is up to a young human named Dale to help. i loved this cute book for kids. The wring was great and will keep children glued to the pages and I loved the illustrations. They were not too cutesy and not too scary for kids either. The illustrator hit just the right note and the author did a wonderful job on a book kids will love.
I bought this for my daughter and she loved it! Think Monsters Inc meets The BFG and then you're somewhere close to this original and colourful tale of a boy who befriends a monster. It is beautifully written; rhyming works a treat with children aged 5 and up and it helps the story stick within their memory long after the book has been closed.
"Super Fred" by Tony Gilbert is a well written poem for children with excellent illustrations by Pippa Cornell. It tells the story of a scary monster and its human child friend. The rhymes are easy and rhythmic, making it easy to read. The feel of the story is engagingly warm and funny with a hint of adventure and wonder. Very enjoyable and very recommendable.
Reading this colourful imaginative poetic journey to my three year old filled him with smiles and giggles. He loved talking about the monsters and even checked under his bed to see if he had one hiding away. Well done Tony, wonderful read.
This is a great book no matter what age you are. It's what every child's imagination has; monsters. The artwork compliments the poetic words beautifully.
