Tras haber sufrido una dictadura y una guerra civil, el estado latinoamericano de Nacencio emprende la ruta de la modernización. Con la intención de transformar la selva al sur del país en tierras cultivables, las autoridades recurren a la compañía japonesa Seshimo. Cuando el joven y brillante presidente de la misma, Yuji Seshimo, llega allí, es secuestrado por unos mercenarios que exigen la detención inmediata de las obras... ¿Será una maniobra del lobby del trigo estadounidense para librarse de un competidor potencial? ¿Una suerte de resistencia numantina de los últimos partidarios de la dictadura? ¿Una operación militar de las fuerzas revolucionarias? ¿O un complot de los miembros del consejo de administración de Seshimo, que ven en Yuji a un jefe demasiado joven?

El encargado de desentrañar el misterio será Kenichi, el hermano de Yuji. Acompañado de Gloria, la secretaria de su hermano, este veterano de Vietnam, ahora detective privado en Estados Unidos, se interna en la selva de Nacencio, donde le aguardan traiciones, persecuciones, emboscadas y muchas más aventuras.

He began to work as assistant of the late mangaka Kyota Ishikawa.
He made his manga debut in 1970 with Kareta Heya (A Desiccated Summer), published in the magazine Young Comic.
From 1976 to 1979, he created several hard-boiled comics with the scenarist Natsuo Sekigawa, such as City Without Defense, The Wind of the West is White and Lindo 3.
From 1984 to 1991, Tanigushi and Natsuo Sekigawa produced the trilogy Bocchan No Jidai.
In the 1990s, he came up with several albums, among which Aruku Hito (歩くひと), Chichi no koyomi (The Almanac of My Father), and Keyaki no ki.
In 2001, he created the Icare (Icaro) series on texts by Mœbius.
Jirô Taniguchi gained several prizes for his work. Among others, the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award (1998) for the trilogy Bocchan No Jidai, the Shogakukan prize with Inu wo Kau, and in 2003, the Alph'Art of the best scenario at the Angoulême International Comics Festival (France) for Harukana Machi-E.
His work has been translated in many languages.

Far from the violent storylines often associated with the manga, Taniguchi has developed a very personal style, more adult. Along with other writers, like Tsukasa Hōjō, his comics focus more on the Japanese society and culture, with a subtle analysis of its customs and habits.

Un Taniguchi delle prime ore, lontano dalla poesia e dall'introspezione dei suoi anni più maturi, ma ugualmente intenso nell'espressività e nel tratto. Mi sorprende come le scene d'azione siano sempre così tanto chiare, i movimenti dei corpi sono così realistici che non c'è rischio di rimanere confusi.

Incantevole. Disegni sopraffini, una storia che ha i suoi tempi. Posso dire che seppur sia un manga degli anni '80 è invecchiato molto bene, ho letto poco di Taniguchi ma sono davvero curiosa di saperne di più.

Deja mucho que desear con respecto a otros de sus trabajos, se nota mucho la influencia del comic europeo, pero no es más que un mediocre preludio de su verdadera brillantez

El dibujo me ha parecido mangífico, he disfrutado de cada página, así que el placer visual ha sido muy grande. El guion por otra parte, es lo de lo más insulso que he leído últimamente... lleno de estereotipos, sin ninguna sorpresa y predecible desde el principio. Una pena.

Enemigo fait partie des “oeuvres de jeunesse” de Taniguchi et, par conséquent, n'a donc rien à voir avec le style plus raffiné et les récits introspectifs qui ont fait sa renommé en Europe. À ses débuts il s'intéressait surtout à des histoires d'action et son style n'est pas encore parfaitement défini.

Toutefois, dans les années '80, Taniguchi possède déjà une grande maîtrise de son art. Ainsi, malgré qu'elle soit antérieure à Garôden (en fait, jusqu'à maintenant, c'est le titre le plus ancien de Taniguchi à avoir été traduit), je trouve l'histoire d'Enemigo beaucoup plus intéressante, quoique certains diront sûrement qu'il s'agit d'un polar peu originale et plutôt stéréotypée, mais n'était-ce pas ce que recherchait Taniguchi? Il sait inculqué au récit une forte tension, y ajoutant beaucoup de violence, et réussit sans mal à conserver l'attention du lecteur. Même son dessin m'apparait plus détaillé, quoiqu'il est encore chargé de plusieurs “lignes de vitesse” et d'effets sonore.

C'est un livre soigné où l'on retrouve une douzaine de planches couleurs et un important dossier de quarante-trois pages. Enemigo est certes un thriller noir plutôt typique mais c'est tout de même un très bon gekiga et je le recommande chaudement.

Manga that's heavily inspired by 80s American action movies set in Latin America.

The art and story flow is gorgeous, and I breathed through the tome at the speed of sound. As with Taniguchi's other novels, the realistic world building and atmo is incredible, but the characters and story feel minimal. Maybe it has to do with the medium, but I never knew much about the protagonists and antagonists.

Thus, a fast page-flip with compelling visuals but not much substance.
