Children Of Fiends

Rate this book
The second book in the Of Sudden Origin universe (contains all of Parts 1-4 of the serialized version).

Since the beginning, nature has revised and deleted her various life forms. Versions of man have been dominant for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years. Africanus, Habilis, Erectus, Neanderthal, and many more, have returned to the dust from which we all come. At times they have overlapped with one another and even interbred until a dominant new design supplants that which came before. Telepathus is here now. "What of us?" asks the Sapiens. Perhaps Sapiens has had its time too...

Children Of Fiends, An Of Sudden Origin Novel, is a continuing saga of heroism, cowardice, cruelty, barbarity, fear, lust and love.

C. Chase Harwood (aka Chris) made a career in Hollywood, decorating sets for such hits as THE BIG BANG THEORY and WILL & GRACE before turning his passion for storytelling into clicks on a keyboard. Between assaults on the walls of the screenwriting world, he chose to experiment with prose and found a fondness for Action-Adventure, particularly in the form of Sci-Fi and the Paranormal. Within that framework, he gets to explore the countless ways that humans interact while under duress. "Life is all the more lived when the consequences are high. When told as a tale it can be quite a page-turner," says Harwood. He lives in Los Angeles with his costume designer wife and young boy girl twins.

This is C. Chase Harwood's follow-up to the previously reviewed Of Sudden Origin. I was very excited to see how this unique story would progress. I was not disappointed with this continuation of the Of Sudden Origin saga. Harwood continues to explore the post-apocalyptic landscape of the new USA and takes us beyond the relative security of the protective boarder set up to protect the few remaining Americans. As opposed to the previous book, this omnibus focuses on the children of the fiends. These children are the creatures of your nightmares and posses the ability to telecommunicate and control the few remaining humans and cause them to bend to their will. We meet a new set of characters as this book takes place some years after the initial outbreak.
Overall, the writing is very easy to follow and has a page turning effect. I found myself excited to see what else could go wrong and to see just how these characters were going to escape from some of the outrageous situations they are forced in to.
I would highly recommend this saga to any zombie loving, dystopian genre, apocalyptic fan. Harwood takes us past the stereotypical zombies and shows us what could be when you factor in the idea of the survival of the fittest and evolution.

I received this book as an ARC and I have to say that as weary of zombie stories as I am, I found "Children of Fiends" a refreshing twist on the genre. As with nearly all of these stories, this one takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where humans are the endangered species and are being supplanted by the first generation offspring of the "living dead" mutants from a nuclear holocaust. The protagonists here are attempting to cross what's left of America in search of precious energy and food while being pursued by armies of fiends as well as a group of quasi-religious militants from a neighboring region. Needless to say, this creates all manner of problems for our heroes who, by the by, are accompanied by two of the "children" they have raised from infancy. Talk about your complications.
The author does not give away the cause for the rapid genetic alterations within a single generation but there are hints and I hope the next book sheds some light on this. I think I know and I ain't tellin'. You'll just have to read it and make your own guesses, but read it you should.

REVIEW: CHILDREN OF FIENDS OMNIBUS by C. Chase Harwood

After all is said and done ( and it would seem ALL has been written, and filmed, in the Zombie sub-genre), what new could be imagined? C. Chase Harwood accomplished exactly that-a new framework for this particular tapped-out fictional mine, in OF SUDDEN ORIGIN. Additionally, he gave us a very reasonable, albeit surprising, scientific rationale, in terms of spontaneous evolutionary mutation [hence, the "Sudden Origin"]. He also rendered a number of memorable characters [for my part, I can't forget the isolation minister and his "commune" on the island].

Like its predecessor, OF SUDDEN ORIGIN, CHILDREN OF FIENDS is literate, articulate, horror. There is sound scientific basis for the mutations, from the initial genetically engineered cause right up through the various evolutionary outcomes. Yet is also thoroughly humanized and individualized, and like OF SUDDEN ORIGIN, CHILDREN OF FIENDS is just a pleasure to read.

THE SUPED UP FREAKS ARE AT IT AGAIN, THEY ARE...

Hello, this is another great story. I wish the author would do a 1.5 so we could find out what happened to the wonderful characters in the first story. Great characters in the second story as well. Very well written. Thanks.

A Surprise

This was not a bad book. I was disappointed because I bought it based on book one of the series. The only part of book one that is in this book are the infected. I feel like their was a bait and switch. If I rated this book as a stand alone, I would give it 3.5 stars.

I was given the book "Children of Fiends-Omnibus" by C. Chase Harwood in exchange for an honest review.
I said it after I read "of Sudden Origin-Omnibus" and I will say it again this series is truly terrifying. Mr Harwood is a master of horror once again I was left with nightmares.

Stewart Dean and his crew along with some military soldiers are sent on a mission to retrieve some wind turbines for the City so they will finally have enough power to live properly not just exist. Along the way they see what has happened to the once beautiful America now ravaged with pollution and death. That's not to mention the devil children otherwise known as Pucks who will invade your mind and bend you to their will. Will they save the City or be slaughtered mercilessly?

If you thought the Fiends from book one were scary wait until you meet the Pucks. There is a whole new cast of characters some you will love others you hope will come to a horrible end. The picture mr Harwood paints of the pollution ravaged land is so realistic. Another brilliant read you won't be disappointed, I give it 5 stars you can find it at Amazon.
