This is a collection of four Jalan and Snorri stories, one novella and three short stories.
All of the stories have previously appeared as ebooks or in other anthologies.
The collection
The New World - A novella in which Jalan and Snorri travel to America. The Hero of Aral Pass - The story of how Jalan came to be known as a hero. A Thousand Years - A tale from Snorri's youth. Three is the Charm - A story from Jalan's dissolute past.
Mark Lawrence is married with four children, one of whom is severely disabled. Before becoming a fulltime writer in 2015 day job was as a research scientist focused on various rather intractable problems in the field of artificial intelligence. He has held secret level clearance with both US and UK governments. At one point he was qualified to say 'this isn't rocket science ... oh wait, it actually is'.
Mark used to have a list of hobbies back when he did science by day. Now his time is really just divided between writing and caring for his disabled daughter. There are occasional forays into computer games too.
I collected The New World novella and three short stories so that it was a large enough collection to warrant hardcover and paperback editions.

This was a great read. There's not many easier 5s that I've given, though the prince of fools books are probably the biggest contenders. The first story in this collection 'The new world' was absolutely brilliant. It seems outrageous to say because of how much I loved prince of fools and liars key but I genuinely beleive if Mark ever does finish the novel (we may only hope and pray) that it might beat out the previous three books in the series and be my favourite. The small insight these 83 pages gave us was amazing, Jalan and Snorri fighting pirates on the shores of America, what is there not to love? The potential for such a story is sky high and I really can't wait to read the completed thing one day (hopefully). The hero of aral pass was much shorter but just as good, the short story perfectly blends the laugh out loud humour of prince jalan with the suprising emotional substance so often seen in the POF series, it is an unbeatable combination. A thousand years was also really good but offered something different in the way of a more heavy hitting story with a lot of emotional weight to it, it was great to see Olaf again and his character was great here. The book ends with three is the charm, a short story i have read before in road brothers but was more than happy to read again - classic prince jalan tom foolery that I love so much. Great read.
The Red Queen’s Ward by Mark Lawrence is a pure joy to read. Mark Lawrence never disappoints, and this book delivers plenty of humor alongside the adventure. It was a genuine pleasure to journey once again with my favorite characters, Jalan and Snorri, whose dynamic remains as entertaining and sharp as ever. Witty, fast-paced, and full of heart, this story is a reminder of why Lawrence’s writing is so addictive.
I enjoyed the short stories and novella here, and would love to see "The New World" fleshed out to a full novel eventually as mentioned in the book, and just a return in general to the world created in Broken Empire/Red Queen's War.
I missed the Broken Empire. So, it was nice to go back, even if only briefly. As usual, Jalan is reprehensible. Snorri is an icon. I hope to read more someday.
The Red Queen's Ward includes four short stories involving the Red Queen's War protagonists: 1. The New World, 2. The Hero of Aral Pass, 3. A Thousand Years and 4. Three is the Charm. Which, of course, means Jalan. Well, at least in three out of four. And Jalan is one of my favorite book characters. So, I had to have this book! I had already read two of the stories: The Hero or Aral Pass and A Thousand Years but I didn't mind rereading them to refresh my memory. I particularly enjoyed the first story, The New World. There was so much going on in this story that there's definitely material for another Jalan trilogy (please, please, please!) and I was left wanting more! We follow Jalan as he sails to the New World (America) with some of his friends that we met and loved in the Red Queen books. The Hero of Aral Pass is a peek behind the scenes of the event that built Jalan's hero reputation and it had me laughing again. A Thousand Years takes us to the younger years of Snorri. I found that story to be very brave and honest. Three is the Charm was a classic Jalan romp. I tried to read it slowly to make the book last, but it was over too soon! I can never have enough of Jalan!
An absolute joy to find myself in the company of Jalan and Snorri again. This has always been my favourite series by Mark Lawrence and these short stories did not disappoint. I would love to read more of their adventures.
A start of a new Jalan and Snorri novel marked as a novella (it was pretty cool), a solid short story, a great short story, and a not-so-great short story to cap it off.
Again, this book proves that anything with Snorri in it is guaranteed to be good.
