When Lady Serena Boyce's husband, the elderly duke of Warrington, could not give her an heir, he asked her to take a lover in order to produce a child. She never dreamed it would mean falling in love. One look at the handsome stranger who rescued her from a thief, and virginal Serena was overcome with desire. Dark and compelling, Lucien Clayborne, Marquess of Daneridge, was everything her honor warned her against. Yet the anguish in his soul drew her nearer...and before the night was through, she had gifted him with her innocence.
Or a love they were destined to share?
Then the duke was murdered, and Lucien discovered that Serena was pregnant. Still reeling from the death of his cherished daughter and enraged by his first wife's callous betrayals, Lucien's honor demanded that he make Serena his bride. But the rapture of their one night together had unlocked feelings he thought his heart had forgotten, and now a chilling evil threatened their chance to claim a love that promised to, last a lifetime.
The book started out interesting and I was hopeful that this would be a good book. Then it got repetitive and boring. I dislike HR books where the heroine denies her sexual urges because she believes it's immoral. It's such an uninteresting reason for keeping the two main characters apart (intimately, at least).
The hero's ex-wife cheated on him many times and he believes all women, including the heroine, are all like his ex-wife. So that was the repetitive part. He actually divorced her (his ex-wife). There's some OW drama, which I felt was unnecessary.
There's one very short sex scene with the villain and the ex-wife. The heroine has two TSTL moments. She goes out when she knows her life is in danger. At least she takes a few footmen and her maid with her but they were no help.
I loved the narrator! I really liked this book! Lucien and Serena are perfect for each other. They have a painful history and I would have thought that they would have been perfect for each other. But a lot goes on in this storyline and towards the end they finally have the love for each other!
this is my 5th re read of this old favoirte.....and I still give it 5 stars....when I am in a dry spell finding nothing good to read. This novel is one I go back to......I can not recomend it enough....
I love books by Shelley Bradley/Shayla Black, one and the same author as long as it is not ménage, which some of her books are. One Wicked Night is a story of Lady Serena Boyce. When Serena’s husband, the elderly Duke of Warrington, could not give her an heir, he begged her to take a lover in order to conceive a child. And he gifted her with the child she always wanted. This was a very passionate love story, which I enjoyed very much. This book was a re-read for me. Just an add on. September 16, 2015 was my third re read of this story....still love this story....sensual level is a strong 7
Still on my Regency Romance run. I know this author mainly for her contemporary books so I was a little hesitant in picking up this Regency knowing that her current writing style would not fit the Regency time period too well. But I was presently surprised when it was actually very well written for the time period. I really like it in general. The characters where very likable. The romance was both very sweet and intense.
Why only three stars? I look away one star for the ending. For real! It's like she was just tired of writing so she just stopped. I felt very wanting by the end. I wanted a little bit more detail. Like 3 more pages would have gotten that 4th star. I would suggest it but be ready for it to abruptly end. Haha.
I don't know why I even finished this book. I started it because it was Shayla Black, but this isn't her typical hot, sexy prose. This is an "historical romance" but it's just ridiculous. I don't know if listening to it made it worse or if that's the only reason I finished it. I would not recommend this to anyone. Sorry.
I borrowed this from the library because I love Joan Overfield's Lady Cat and this seemed to have the same premise. And it sort of does on the basest level but the ML is a horrible "alpha male" type. Definitely not for me, so I discontinued my read.
Anything from Mrs. Black is good to me. I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed plot and the story telling. Like most books though, the ending was rushed. Or was a full stop.
This book started out interesting but quickly turned to maybe it will get better to the one of the worst books. The main character is married to a much older man that could be her grandfather besides that her next love interest treats her poorly and belittles her. Then her so called honorable man tries to force her to marry him!!!! Oh nooooo! The book became very predictable and I would definitely not recommend this book.

Extremely predictable and a little long for what it was making it seem slow & boring. It has a simple story that has been told a million times before, the characters weren’t even very likeable unfortunately.
Serena Boyce and Lucien Clayborne. Serena is married to a much older and impotent man, Lord Warrington who asks her to take on a lover in order for him to have a legitimate heir before he dies, so that his horrible nephew, Alastair will not inherit.
Serena loves her husband and considers him her best friend. At his request, she ends up going to Vauxhall with a widowed friend, gets robbed, and ends up getting saved by Lucien, the handsome green eyed man with a shattered knee. They have sex, he realizes that she's a virgin, she leaves before he wakes up.
Lucien has been burned before. He had gone through a divorce after his wife had ran off with his good friend, his daughter was killed when she was run over by a carriage after leaving the house in search of her mother. This, he blames himself for.
Warrington finds out about Serena's night with him and puts him in his will to watch over her should he get murdered; which he does. Lucien spends a great deal of time trying to find out why exactly Serena was still a virgin and what her purpose was in sleeping with him that one night. Alistair ends up coming after her and trying to kill her but in the end it all works out, of course.

Lucien is a grieving father and divorced Marquess of Daneridge. Serena a virgin and is married to the Duke of Warrington. Serena's husband is imapaired and ask her to do something completely against her beliefs because the money-driven nephew of the duke stands to inherit everything if Serena does not concieve an heir.
But, one night at a party with a friend she is attacked and Lucien intercedes to save her. One brave act has her within the care of a man she is so drawn too that she lets him take her to his home and shares a night to remember.
The story carries so much tension, desires, deceptions and truths seen as lies that you read past your bedtime looking for answers. A truly enjoyable novel.
First of all OH MY GOD, how is it I did not know about Shelley Bradley when these books first came out in 2000. From the moment I picked up One Wicked Night to read (which is a re release in e format ) I could not put it down. I love the dynamics of a dominate male and a no so submissive woman. This Book will make you cry scream laugh and possibly want to strangle some one, but will still get you to the warm fuzzy feeling at the end. One Wicked Night is tame compared to Shelley Bradley's other persona Shayla Black.
I almost skipped reading this book. The reviews put me off. I read a good few reviews complaining about the MFC denying her "urges." But they failed to tell you that she's a god fearing devote christian that thinks she needs to be punished for committing the worst sin - adultry. If you take that into consideration her actions stand. I'm glad the little voice in my head told me to give it a go. It's a well written historical romance. There's angst between the main characters but not OTT. I enjoyed it!
This book wasn't wicked at all - by the second half became extremely tedious and repetitive. Heroine was TSTL in the extreme, twice secretly going out based on a note when she knew her life was in danger. Hero treats the heroine like shit because he thinks she's manipulative like his ex-wife. Heroine spends half the book trying to deny her sexual urges because she wants to be a moral good christian. It all makes no sense in the context and this 'conflict' is most of the book.
Lady Serena is married to a older duke who is impotent. In need of an heir Lady Serena spends one night in disguise with Lucien a member of the nobility and a marquess. Lady Serenna misleads Lucien as to who she is. When he discovers she sought him out to bear a heir for her dying husband he despises her. This book is on my keeper shelf.
I was hesitant to read this book because I normally don't read historical fiction but being a fan of the author I thought. I'd give it a shot. I totally loved it!!! After the doomsday brethren series this is my next favorite Shayla Black/Shelley Bradley book.
The storyline is great. The characters draw you in. There was not one part of this book I didn't like.
I don't read much historical romances but I have to admit this was a pretty good one. I mean the hero is in pain and brooding but absolutely in love with the heroine. The heroine is lonely, confused and fighting something she can't quite control. It was a beautiful book, touched with danger and murder.
I read the ebook release under Shayla Black, aka Shelly Bradley. Excellent book set in Regency England. Well-written story line and great characters. Highly recommended.
