Kelly Family #1

Ethan: A Kelly Family Novella

Rate this book
Officer Ethan Kelly is a nice guy. That’s what all the girls say, right before they toss him aside for one of those bad boys. But when he meets rookie officer, Heather Moss, Ethan is determined to show her that a nice guy knows how to treat a real woman.

But Heather isn’t interested. Or at least, she doesn’t want to be. She swore off men a long time ago, and focusing on her career leaves zero room for romance. Even with someone as sweet and sexy as Ethan. But when she saves his life on a robbery call, Heather realizes that he might just be the man to save her from herself.

3.5 Got potential stars.

I liked the story and characters well enough. A few things that brought the rating down for me:
*There was no clear indicator when the POV would change. It could be in the middle of a scene or paragraph which is not as easy to read.
* The ages of the main characters were not given exactly, but they are old enough to be cops....and yet the author used boy/girl when I think man/woman would be more appropriate.(i.e. He did not know what it was about this girl that called to him.) Heather also "giggles" a lot. That makes her seem young and immature to me.

Overall, a nice little novella with a bit of heat, some drama and a nice Beta hero.

You mean you have been at this job for two whole months already and you haven’t heard that Mike Kelly’s boys couldn’t be more different?” he asked sarcastically. “Storm is tall and blonde, good-looking, military smarts, athletic build. The spitting image of his father, the much beloved and revered Michael Kelly. Ethan, on the other hand, is about three inches shorter in stature, average looks, average police skills. He’s never gonna be half the cop that their father was. Storm is the city’s last best hope. Didn’t you know any of that?”
Heather couldn’t help her incessant giggle as she listened to his snide, self-deprecating diatribe. “No. I was not aware,” she laughed. “I’m sorry.”
“Well … now you’ve been schooled,” he told her.

**
We can move forward from here and build on this connection we seem to have. You can let me take you out on some real dates. We can spend some time together and get to know each other. You said before that you wanted to feel like a woman again,” he said, caressing her face with his hand. “Well, give me the chance to help you with that. Let me show you how a woman should be treated, Heather. Let me make you feel like a woman.” “Ethan,” she whispered, as he leaned in and kissed her forehead.
“I don’t believe in one night stands, Heather. That’s not what I’m about,” he said softly. “I like you. And I want to see where this can go.”
She nodded as she looked up into his eyes with a timid smile. “Me too.”
**
This guy wasn’t alone.” “Well, then he probably made a run for it when he heard the shots. I’ll inform dispatch to send a K-9 unit,” Ethan said. Then he smiled at her. “Are you gonna get up, or you want to sit there and relax for the rest of the shift, princess?”
Heather shrugged a shoulder at him as she finally heard the sound of their backup arriving in the distance. “Hey, it’s nice down here. Bring me a latte, would you?”

“Everybody okay in here?” Ethan looked up when he heard his brother’s voice and saw Storm looking around, assessing the situation. Then he looked at Ethan with concern.
“Yeah,” Ethan said quietly, still in shock. Then he turned back to Heather and asked, “Did you just save my life, Moss?”
Heather glanced nervously from Ethan to Storm and back again. “Yeah, well … you did buy me a beer,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders.
Ethan smiled at her, ignoring Storm’s raucous laughter. “You know, I think I’m starting to like this girl,” Storm said as the other officer escorted perp number two, and his bag of loot down the hallway.
“Yeah, well that is just too damn bad,” Ethan replied, still looking directly at Heather. “Because I saw her first.”

He smiled at her. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me,” he said, looking into her eyes. “Just like there’s a whole lot I’d like to learn about you. If you would only give me the chance.” Heather looked at him in surprise. How did he know? “That is what’s going on here, right?” he asked with a quiet shrug. “You’re having second thoughts about us seeing each other? Or you’ve changed your mind completely, and this is the big kiss off.” He knew it well. That moment when the girl you’ve been dating, or hoping to date, tells you that she just wants to be friends, and that you are such a “nice guy.”

Ethan felt his heart begin to race as she spoke, and her tearful smile just melted him. Where had this beautiful, tenacious force of nature come from? She was so resilient, to have come through such turmoil still be so determined to fight for a happy life. And Ethan knew that from this moment on, he would do anything to keep this incredible woman by his side.

In this first novella of the Kelley family, you meet Ethan and Heather. Ethan’s from a long line of cops and is on the force himself. He’s more of the strong, silent nice-guy type than your typical alpha male bad boy. I loved him from the first few pages. He’s sincere about his feelings for others and family is very important to him, even if he’s always compared to his brothers. When he meets the new female cop, Heather Moss, for the first time it isn’t pretty. They meet at a crime scene where they discover a dead body. Being the more experienced cop on the scene, Ethan helps Heather with her first crime scene and helps teach her the ropes. Great guy, right?

Heather seems to think he is, but she’s decided a long time ago that men aren’t important. What she’s not prepared for is just how attracted she is to him. Heather has always had to be strong and independent. She’s not sure if she can let someone else in, especially when that someone is as hot as Ethan. She struggles a lot with the idea of having a relationship with Ethan and has just about talked herself out of it completely when he shows her that he can be patient with her. I’m not saying they fall in love after one date, but they choose together that they want to learn more about each other and try to have a relationship together.

I enjoyed this quick read. There were great lines thrown in and I felt like was reading a cop show. I think the only thing I’m unsatisfied about is that we don’t know what happened to the person who died. Other than that, pick up a copy and get to know Ethan!

This is the first book I’ve read by Lashell Collins and, as a novella, it was a quick read but very enjoyable. The two main characters, Heather Moss and Ethan Kelly are both police officers. Ethan comes from a family line of police officers but hasn’t quite found his place due to his family dynamics with a domineering father, and older brother, who is the favorite son. Even though Ethan made good grades or made the varsity football team, he couldn’t gain his father’s approval because his brother had already accomplished the same things and better, and he was always made to feel that he was second best.

As the story proceeds, you find out pieces of Heather’s life and the reason that she only wants to focus on her career. She has had terrible events in her life and hasn’t fully healed.

Before Ethan and Heather actually meet and speak to each other, they’ve seen each other several times in the police headquarters and are attracted to each other. As Heather works with Ethan on a case, his kindness, compassion, consideration, and overall ‘good guy’ personality is a surprise. I truly enjoyed Ethan’s character and personality. Most stories seem to be about bad boys, arrogant, only interested in one-night stands, etc. Ethan truly wants to help people and the kindness shows in his eyes, smile and how he speaks to people. This was a nice change for me and to know that the good guys don’t necessarily finish last.

I have found a new favorite author and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Collins’ work. I recommend this novella, along with the three other Kelly Family novella’s, as truly enjoyable stories.

Ms. Collins is a new author for me. This first book in the Kelly series hooked me. I have to finish the series. Ethan is the younger brother in a police family. Big bad dad and brother seem to get the most attention in work and family. Yet Ethan is a great guy, good cop and sexy. He has always been compared to the big brother and found second best. He dated but not as much as many of the guys—nice guys and all that.

Heather, a new cop in the department has caught his eye but they've never met until they back each other up at a gruesome crime scene. He offers to buy her a “after a lousy shift” beer. But that isn't where it ends.

Because Ethan is a nice she lets him into her past, and pants. But is she ready for him? Is it just a one nighter? Will it interfere with her plans at the PD? Lots of questions you'll enjoy reading to get the answers.

These characters are more than likable, they have strong spirits, good morals and a need to help. They are dedicated, but still real people with real problems and real needs. The writing is smooth and flows well with realistic dialogue. Add some heat and you have a great read.

You’re gonna love it. I did and heartily recommend it. Looking forward to the stories of the rest of the clan.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

I was provided a copy of the book by the Author/Publisher for an honest review.

I just finish reading this book, and I have to say that I really love it, love the characters, and how the book turn out to be, this was really a great short story, that once you start reading it you cant put it down, I an gone keep this short since this was a short story. I don't want to give anything away.

This is Ethan and Heather story, the are both cops, at the Easton police department, Ethan don't have luck with woman, and Heather push everyone away, she don't let no one to get closed to her, but all that changes the day that she call for backup, when Ethan heard about the backup call he respond to it, once he show up he see who it was, even though he seen her around and always wanted to talk to her, he never get the chance, but now after what he walk her through what to do, he couldn't stop thinking about her, and Heather couldn't stop thinking about him, she did not know what to think about when he ask her to go for a drink, what they both did not expected was that their life to change that night.

I really love and enjoy reading this book, I love the chemistry that Ethan and Heather have for each other, I love it when she finally open up to him, and explain how she was feeling, and love it even more how Ethan was holding her while she was talking, I just love the story. Author Lashell Collins THANK YOU for introducing me to this awesome characters and this amazing book love it.

Ethan Kelly comes from a long line of police officers. His dad, his brother, his uncle, a number of cousins and his grandfather, all police. Guess what Ethan does? Yup, he’s a police officer. He knows he’ll never be as good as his perfect brother, but he’s a good man and he does his job well.

Heather Moss is a rookie on the Eastwood Police Department. She didn’t always want to be a police officer, but that changed her senior year of high school. That’s also the last time she’s had any kind of relationship with the opposite sex.

Ethan is a short story about boy meets girl and the attraction that they share. It’s a sweet story of overcoming obstacles and moving forward. Ethan is a sweet heart and Heather is a strong female which I love to see in a book. It was a quick read and I enjoyed it. I’m interested in seeing what comes next in the Kelly Family Novella series. I give this book 3.5 stars.

Ethan from a family of Policemen. All his life he never felt goodenough or always 2nd best due to his brother doing everything first. Looking for his father approval and not getting it is something that Ethan has had to dealt with.
Then Ethan meets Heather Moss she is a Policewoman. And she is beautiful. Ethan is instantly attracted to her. Heather had a bad thing happen to her at a young age which makes it hard for her to trust people. But All Heather knows how to do is push him away.
With all the emotions that went back and forth in the book it keep me on my toes. This book offers suspense, a boy meets girls type of story, even some sexy sex scenes.

First book for me by this author but won't be the last. Loved it! Storyline was well written, hot and entertaining. Ethan's a cop, one of those good guys, strong and intense in his feelings. He knows who is he and is comfortable in that role. Heather comes from a tragic background which shapes and makes her what she is today. A female cop but afraid to love and trust. Loved their characters and interaction together. I would recommend and can't wait to read more in this series.

This is the story of Ethan Kelly and Heather Moss. They are both police officers in the Eastwood PD in Ohio. Heather is a victim of violence because when she was 17 her Senior year in high school, her father was shot in front of her and she was raped. It ruined her family dynamics because her mother had a breakdown because her husband was her best friend and she couldn't cope with the loss and her sister Hillary turned to drugs and rebellion became her game. Ethan came from a long line of Police officer actually a legacy. He and his brother Storm are on the police force and then there are cousins Nate and Ryan. Ryan is actually over the Swat team in their police department. Both Ethan's father and his uncle were on the police department. Ethan's father Mike and Storm his brother are the spitting image of each other blonde hair and blue eyes and he is the favorite son at least Ethan believes so. This is the story of these two police officers and how they formed a relationship working on the force. It is a good read. I will always take a chance on a Lashell Collins book because she is a favorite writer of mine.

This was a very enjoyable short read and I really liked how the author has written it. Also the characters are well developed and I can't help but feel that she is also building up the secondary characters in the story, which are so far mostly all relative of some kind to the Kelly Family. I am very much anticipating, reading all of them and really looking forward to the full length novel that is the fifth book in the series. If each novella is as well written as Ethan's Story is, then Where There's Smoke will be one of those books that sucks you right in. Great job Ms. Collins, I'm diving right into Storm's story next!

Arc received for an honest review.

This novella had the potential to be a brilliant read, however that didn't happen for me.

This is perfect for anyone who wants a short light romance that doesn't have much depth to its characters. For me I need to connect to the characters to be able to enjoy and remember a story. We didn't really see much interaction between any characters that will be in the following books so I don't really feel like anything is pushing me to find out some more of their stories.

First off the impression Ethan gives off is that he is very resentful and bitter towards his father and a little towards storm. Then he follows up by saying he is over it. He's not. I just wish maybe we had more to go on with the relationship with his brother and father. Later on your see the kindness from him but I found that was overshadowed by his insecurities, and I must say it's nice to read about a guy that has some and isn't all macho alpha.

Heather moss is a tough strong rookie cop. I enjoyed her character and appreciate all that she has overcome. However spilling your guts about that much tragedy to some guy you've just met seems too fast. It also seemed like she had no feelings on the subject. People handle it in different ways I just would have liked some more emotional depth there.

I love a book that changes point of view, it's great to have different perspectives from different characters, yet I like to know when it's happening. Even if it's just a line between paragraphs. This book didn't it just carried straight on.

Maybe because I'm used to a full length novel to start a series so we can get to know the characters. Maybe that's why I couldn't get into it. I have nothing drawing me into the next book.

I will read the following books to see if they improve for me but I'm in no rush.

I really don't like writing bad reviews but one of my favourite authors said sometimes they help her improve.

Again every book is different for everyone.

Ethan is the good boy next door the one that never seems to get the girl and always seems to come in last. Coming from a family of law enforcement he is always fighting to get out of his dad’s shadow and his older brother. When he is called as back up a rookie office he gets a surprise he wasn't looking for. Heather is a rookie and eager to prove herself in a career where women are not respected by most men. She is enamored with Ethan and is constantly chastising herself for thinking of him. When they come together again they realize there is more than just attraction.

I enjoyed this novella and was super excited to be able to read all of them at once. I am not a patient person so it made me very happy to binge read these books. There are a lot of characters thrown at you but the author does a great job at introducing them. Ethan and Heather are adorable and once they find their balance their relationship grows. Letting go sometimes it’s easier said than done but once you do things can be magical. Make sure you pick the Kelly Family series you won't be disappointed.

Copy received for honest review.

This is a short novella introducing us to the Kelly Family.

Ethan Kelly is a Police Officer in Eastwood Ohio. Coming from a long line of police officers Ethan feels like he is living in his older brother’s shadow and is always looking to receive the acknowledgment that he deserves for being a good cop from his father.

Heather Moss is a rookie cop joining the police force of Eastwood after suffering a terrible tragedy. Joining the force she has one goal and that is to be the best police officer in the Eastwood Police Department and doesn’t need any distractions…

Cue distraction in the form of Ethan Kelly…

Ethan responds to a call for back up from dispatch for Heather, a decomposing body later and Ethan and Heather can’t deny their instant attraction. After meeting up for a drink at Jakes bar where all the cops go after a long shift, a slice of pizza and things steam up pretty fast.

Ethan can’t believe his luck.
Heather is torn and feeling confused.
Will they, won’t they guess you’ll have to read the book…

Great first book introducing us to the Kelly family…bring on book 2…Storm

Ethan is book 1 in the Kelly Family Series by Lashell Collins. It tells the story of Officer Ethan Kelly and rookie officer Heather Moss.

Ethan and Heather have an instant attraction to each other upon meeting that leads them to sleeping together. He wants to continue to get to know her but she is afraid and tries to break it off with him.

This is a pretty good story. I liked Ethan. He's sweet, and a good guy. Heather is a tough, strong, likable character. Over all I liked the book and will read book 2 - Storm. I wish it would have been much longer and more involved.

When Heather's past haunts her thoughts she decides to break it off with Ethan.

Will Ethan let her walk out of his life? Will Heather be able to resist Ethan?

Happy reading to everyone, you won't be disappointed.

This is the first book I've read by Lashell Collins. I thought the storyline was solid, the characters were well constructed and the dynamics of the family were well established in this, the first in the series of The Kelly Family Novella's.

I would recommend this for those who like a love story with a contemporary setting.

This is the first book that I have every read of Lashell Collins.

I actually really enjoyed Ethan Kelly's Story.

The only complaint I have was the story was to short.

Ethan Kelly has a long family of police officers in his family.

Heather Moss is a fellow police officer.

Can these two find love and be able to overcome a past that could get in their way.

Fantastic Read

Lashell Collins is a new author for me. I enjoyed the storyline and couldn't wait to read the next one in the series. Ethan is a son seeking his fathers approval and envious of his older brother. Heather is a rookie with a tragic past. Can the two of them put their differences aside and build a relationship? Pick up a copy to find out.

'Ethan' was well-written, albeit with unrealistic characters. The H/h were sweet, and damn near perfect. A part of me just couldn't buy the love/lust at first sight (within 24 hours of the H/h meeting, no less), while another part of me thought that with the author's convincing voice, anything was possible. Call me sappy, but I really liked this book! LOL! 3.5 stars.

Cute novella, I liked how the hero (Ethan) of the story actually got what he wanted. The female lead (Heather) sounded cute as well. I do wish that Ethan wasn't so hard on himself. There wasn't any flowery dialogue or unneeded tangents, which was nice. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
