***This is a serialized work of fiction. This means that one episode of short fiction, roughly 20 pages, will be released every week for five weeks per serial. There will be cliffhangers leading onto the next episode. The whole serial will be available as one novella once each episode has been released. If you prefer longer pieces of work, I suggest you wait until then.***
Hi, my name is Hope and I'd like to introduce you to our world. Earth is full of two races, the Avoidables and Perfects. I'm an Avoidable because I only have one arm. I was born that way apparently. Because of my defect, my mother had to move to the Lower Side. The Perfects are humans that have no physical flaws. They live in luxury, while we live in filth.
Avoidables have defects ranging from looks to unexplained gifts. Some of us are half breeds. Dragons and animals were known to have bred with the human race thousands of years ago. We all live in cities, usually divided in two. The Perfects live on the Upper Side, while the Avoidables inhabit the Lower Side. We've been consumed by hate for a race that rejects us so heartlessly. We've become dangerous.
I like to sneak over to their side sometimes. It's fun to watch how they live. To watch their perfect gorgeous faces react to the one armed freak. Until I met Jason anyway. He ignored the fact that I had one arm, even daring to touch my shoulder stub. What happened when he did, blew my mind. I was no longer an ugly Avoidable. I was much, much better than any Perfect.
Rachel Medhurst grew up in a small village in Surrey, England. She writes to inspire and heal. She lives in the British countryside with her dog. If she’s not writing, she can be found walking in nature and reading. For more information about current projects, including her short story dystopian series, Avoidables, please check out her website.
Reading this was pretty much like reading a novel outline with plot holes that made me feel as if I were trying to form patterns on swiss cheese.
I absolutely had no idea where Hope were physically 3/4 of the time. Absolutely NO world building. No true chronological sequence also bothered me. I am expected to magically know months has passed....problem is I was told this not shown and their was no reason for it. Now my biggest problem with this rough arc, yes it is seriously at best a wip. Hope is THE one written about. Prophesied about...exactly who wrote the prophecies, I still don't know. She is also the ONLY angel on earth. Well until she meets the male half of her own soul. Her soul mate and within a flick of a bic she is in bed with him. So now we have an angel sleeping with herself and she is not alone. He is by proxy also an angel. How can he not be? He is the other half of Hope's soul. Then they go to...i cant recall, they go somewhere and low and behold they find an entire room full of angels....hmmm. So hope cannot be THE one. Or she is but she is not alone. Or she is the one and alone and as crazy as a loon who knows? I certainly don't.
Now here is the real kicker. The premise. The plot line simplified and cleaned up, the sub plot line all have such a freshness, so much potential but I get the idea the author got impatient uploaded and hit published long before she ever reread her own wip.
Honestly I cannot recommend this book. If the author decides to take another look. Spend some real time and effort then...Yes. The plot line is worth it but until then I would suggest you wait.
Definitely a 4.5 for me. I signed up for this serial and recieved the first episode strait away. The story is unique and definitely lends itself to Miss Medhurst's interesting format. I immediately liked the characters and am in their corner for what seems to be an epic battle ahead. Can't wait for the new episode.
This was a great start to what feels like an epic fantasy. It is formatted as a series of episodes and the story is very unique. This is a mixture of fantasy and dystopian that comes together nicely with a strong message. I enjoyed reading the first episode very much. Very creative!
Don’t waste your time. Poorly written, way too choppy and the author couldn’t keep the facts straight herself, how was I supposed to. One sentence would say Hope and Jason knew each other for 3 months they she would reference something that happened when they first met and say it was only a few days ago...sorry, just not good...
I gave this book a 4/5 due to the grammatical errors sprinkled throughout. I'm glad I am literate because I could have been confused. I would recommend to a mature audience.
{My Thoughts} – I always enjoy finding little nuggets for free on amazon. This is one of those nuggets.
“Earth is full of two races, the Avoidables and Perfects.” An avoidable is someone that is flawed in some way or form and a Perfect is someone that is not flawed at all. In this story you learn about the two races and how they became separated. You learn that there is a plan that has been in the works to try and unite the two races and help them to co-exist with one another without all the discrimination.
Hope is an Avoidable that has one arm and she likes to sneak onto the Perfects territory and enjoy the luxuries that they have and she don’t. When the book begins that’s what she was doing. She was dancing at the Perfects dance club of some sort having a great time and then a Perfect saw her and they called security. Before she could be arrested her friend Purple another Avoidable had rescued her. Hope however just had to go back and talk to the guy that called security and soon learned she was instantly drawn to his soul.
She learned that the guys name was Jason and he became a constant in her life after that encounter. He helped her to unlock things within herself that she hadn’t been aware she was capable of and she fell in love with him.
Most of this story is about them avoiding capture after their flat mate bombs one of the building on Perfect territory. Because they lived together they are labeled guilty through association. They have a pal named Artie that helps them stay safe and of course Jason sneaks over from time to time to spend time with her. Eventually they go about catching their flat mates partner and they hold him captive for the Perfects to get him.
Why are they trying to catch the flat mates partner? What did Jason unlock in Hope? Why is she instantly drawn to him? What happened to their flat mate? Did they ever get arrested for being guilty by association? If so what happened? So many questions. It’s a short story and well worth the read.
I liked the concept of THE AVOIDABLES and feel it has a lot pf promise. The story was good and had good characters. Hope is a great character who's an Avoidable because she has only one arm but she has wings. She meets Purple. I'm not quite sure about him yet. I'm uncertain if Purple is Jason. I like these characters and see this developing into a great series. Then there's Noland whose a likeable character.
A few places in the story left me wondering but I was definitely drawn in. I can see it developing into something really great. I look forward to seeing where Rachel Medhurst goes with the story. I liked the length of this one for the beginning of a series because it leaves room for so much more in the follow up book.
Anna Ferguson does a great job narrating the story. I like her voice and she has good voice inflections. She fits the story very well. The audio had a bit of a tinny sound but it didn't take away from the story or the narration. I'm hoping Anna continues with the series.
9Books in your Series at 99c-$3 per 80-ish Page Book is way too steep. Just from the Free 1st Book, I cab trek this Series has the opportunity to be absolutely amazing, BUT having to pay $18 for 9 books equaling 720pgs (broken down into 80-ish pages per Book) is really steep & upsetting... I was really looking forward to getting into this Series, but I can't afford that.
At first glance, 99c here, $3 there doesn't seem all that bad. But for a fast reader like myself, who'd get immersed in a Story Line like this, I can't afford $18 for 1-2hrs of reading. Maybe I'll consider the Series if you group 4 Books together for a cheaper price or Combine the Books into 1-2 Books for a lower price (Like $2.99-$3.99 per Book).
Unfortunately, I'll have to move on to a different Book without knowing what happens in Books #2-9 as long as the price stays the same. It's a shame because you'd have a huge following if you reconfigured your Books/Pricing/Page Amounts.
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
I enjoyed this, I enjoyed this enough to want more..and I hope we get another episode!
This is a story about a girl Named Hope, she was born with only one arm and shunned by a society who feels if you are not perfect, you need to be outcast to another part of town! They are actually called The Perfects and The Avoidables....how messed up is that? But the time has come where not everyone feels that way and both sides are sneakily trying to join forces and form a rebellion! There are Angels, and other cool things....and there is a bit of a love story starting and stopping, and perhaps starting again...and a bit of destiny mixed in here, in this short and very intriguing little story! I will continue this series! Well worth a listen!!!
Okay so... How do i put this without being too mean and rude? This book didn't really catch my attention. The story line was perfect, it was great and well put together but it also was so fast pace that i got dizzy at some points, i don't know maybe my timing was off. I do know that this author does have potential for sure. So to my actual review i cant really give one because i did not finish the story, i do want to try to give it a go again another time but right now just isn't that time. To Rachel Medhurst i do think this had great potential i just wish it wasn't to fast pace for me, i'm sorry i couldn't finish it but i promise i will try again that way i can make a full review. Thank you all!
Too fast! There is very little world building. The story is only 85 pages and on page 40-ish Hope, the main character, is declaring her love for a guy she doesn't know. Whenever the environment changes your left without any info... I finished the book and it didn't get much better. Hope and her man are in her apartment, then flying off to a cave and then without so much as oh by the way, they are walking into a board room . Not enough world building for me.
I really loved the story idea behind Avoidables. Cities all around the world divided into two sections, The Avoidables and The Perfects. I really enjoyed Hope as a character and enjoyed seeing her grow in such a short amount of time. I personally love stories like this, when they are not what you are expecting at all. I personally loved the start to the Avoidables, I'm just not the biggest fan of serials. I don't like having to purchase what could have been one novel bit by bit. I rather spend the money to buy the entire completed novel than have to buy a small section of the novel one at a time.
Quick easy read. I wouldn't classify it as a novel maybe a novella due to the length. I enjoyed how the author set the book apart from others by its fantasy aspects and setting it in a post-apocalyptic like society. Though it caught my interest the characters seem to not quite keep up with the pace. The main character develops slowly, much slower than the pace of the book, making it almost seem that instead of growing she is back stepping up until the very end. I do look forward to reading the next episode and i would recommend the book to any fantasy lover and young adult.
This is part one of what will be a serial story. Really enjoyed it can’t wait to read the series 2. Once I have read a couple of chapters I quickly understood the characters and a lovely concept. Based in the upper and lower side, everyone feels an outsider at sometimes in their life so easy to understand the feelings. Hope, she is such a strong character and on a great journey, what does the future hold for her??
It doesn't seem to matter that authors write the same concepts over and over. HOWEVER..it is refreshing when it is tweaked as this series is. Meaning that not everyone is considered PERFECT AND I mean 100% as the author has divided everyone into 2 groups. Perfect vs. Avoidable (who must forag for everything including food) The story can be slow at times debut the beauty of.it is I have time to read it..
Overall, I wasn't hooked by the opening of this series. I found everything moved too quickly. I understand it is a piece of short fiction, but I have read wonderful short pieces that have the depth and emotional connection that I found this lacked. I have no doubt there will be an audience for it, given the popularity of other books that tell a similar tale, but I don't think I will be continuing with the series.
I was asked to read this and found it fascinating.
I really liked the concept and thought it a great beginning to the series. I do think it could have been fleshed out more by detailing the characters and building the idea, however, it was fast paced and well written as well as intriguing.
The book had a good premise, but it jumped around too quickly. I get wanting to use new terms to describe people and groups, but you still need to give the reader the chance to learn what that term means before using it all the time. Also, the plot moved really really quickly - too quickly to keep up with sometimes.
An intriguing start to the avoidables series. Hope and Purple are avoidables, Jason is one of the perfects they live on opposite sides of town, leading separate lives. But is there more to Hope than meets the eye??
I loved reading this. The concept of Avoidables and Perfects is great, and something I can relate to on some level. The friendships/relationships formed, and the setting, makes for an interesting read and I am looking forward to reading the next installment!
This is a brilliant start to the series! It's absolutely engaging with intriguing characters and a wicked twist on dystopian concept. It's fast-paced with no boring bits. The reading experience is akin to watching a short film or a TV series. Wonderful concept!
Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sssssssssssssss Ttttttttttttttttt bookk ever hay Rachel Medhurst can you and Lee Nichols write a book together pls that would be alsome
It was hard to rate this book. There was action and suspense which was awesome, but when Hope and Jason go together and then he left due to his obligation to being engaged i kinda felt the story change. Going to read book 2 to see how it goes wish me luck!
