About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

Hands down one of the most intelligently crafted mysteries that I've ever read. Considering that my mystery/thriller consumption appetite has been at an all-time low for sometime, I was doubly surprised by the kick I got out of this novel.

Started this one with a lot of eagerness, if not expectations, Sujatha being one of my favorite writers and this one being my first glimpse at his famous lawyer sleuth duo of Ganesh-Vasanth. And though I wasn't disappointed or something, I got really nervous at about the halfway stage about the possible denouements to the mystery because the plot was so wildly pulsating between crime and science and supernatural, that the denouement could only be either wickedly brilliant or an absolute cliche. Thankfully, it was the former.

Talking about wicked brilliance - This is the first time I'm reading a full-length novel in which the last line-yes the very last line of the novel throws new light on the entire plot of the novel. This is also my first murder mystery in which everything -the perpetrator, the motive, the method- is left open-ended. It takes guts to do this even today since it puts some readers off, and to have done this in 1981 brings out a big salute to Sujatha. Of course I'm not well read, so any recommendations of similar novels/authors is most welcome.

Sujatha's narrative seamlessly shifts perspective throughout the novel, effortlessly hopping between the calmness and composure of lawyer Ganesh and the light-heartedness of his play boyish PJ-cracking assistant Vasanth and the grimness of the autumnal murders with an abundance of the usual Sujatha wordplays. Enjoyed the concocted Tamil poems that augmented the supernatural and had to kick myself for not being able to guess the Science part accurately enough despite it being a novel written in 1981.

Looking forward to reading more of Ganesh-Vasanth!

I read 'Kolaiyudhir Kalam' (= Murder Season) by Sujatha, for the first time, when I was a teenager. It was one my favourite detective mysteries then. I had forgotten most of the story since, including who was the bad guy :) So I thought it was a good time to read it again.

The story told in 'Kolaiyudhir Kalam' goes like this. Lawyer Ganesh and his assistant Vasanth are hired to look at some estate documents and see whether there are any problems with respect to title and ownership. The owner of the estate is a young woman called Leena, who is going to turn eighteen. Her parents have passed. Her uncle is her guardian now and has been managing the estate on her behalf. On her eighteenth birthday he will be handing over the estate to her. But when the lawyer duo stay at the estate for a couple days, strange things start happening, voices are heard in unoccupied rooms and there seems to be a ghost near the lake. And there is a legend behind the ghost – she seems to an ancestor of Leena, the young woman who owns the estate, and she is out there to get revenge. And before long someone is dead. And the dead person's body disappears. And both our heroes are beaten up by a probable supernatural being. Is it really a ghost which is doing all these bad things? Or is it some good old plain vanilla human beings who are doing these bad things out of greed? Who will benefit by these strange happenings? Is Leena's life in danger? Are out lawyer-detectives able to find the mystery behind all this? You have to read the story to find out.

Re-reading 'Kolaiyudhir Kalam' was an enjoyable experience. I had forgotten the story completely and so couldn't guess the revelation in the end. Sujatha does a Hitchcock and kills the main suspect halfway through the story and after that it is a roller coaster ride and it becomes harder to guess the ending. There are many popcultural and literary references throughout the story – like a quote from an O'Henry story, the Bruce Lee movie 'The Return of the Dragon', the Frederick Forsyth novel 'The Devil's Alternative', a description of a plot revelation from a Tamilvanan novel (one of my favourite Tamil crime fiction writers), Inspector Jacques Clouseau, Agatha Christie – it was fun to spot all these. I don't think I spotted or appreciated most of these when I read the book the first time, all those years ago.

I enjoyed reading 'Kolaiyudhir Kalam' again. It didn't resonate with me as much as it did to my teenage self, but it was an enjoyable read nevertheless. After reading the book I wondered whether I had grown out of Sujatha books. But then I remembered that I read the collected plays of Sujatha sometime back and it deeply resonated with me and I loved it. So there is hope yet.

கொலையுதிர் காலம்-2007 ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளியான சுஜாதாவின் திகில் நாவல். அரசமரத்தடி மண்டபத்தில் ஓர் ஆவி, உருவமற்ற குரல்கள், தானாகவே நகரும் புத்தகங்கள், ரத்தமற்ற சடலங்கள், மேற்குறிப்பிட்ட அமானுஷ்ய நிகழ்வுகள் அனைத்தையும் முன்னதே அறிவிக்கும்பொருட்டு எழுதப்பட்ட ஒரு புத்தகம் என்று அனைத்து thriller elementsகளும் அம்சமாய் அமைந்திருக்கும் ஒரு நாவல் தான் இது.

கதையின் நாயகனான கணேஷ் தன்னை சுற்றி அந்தப் பண்ணை வீட்டில் நடக்கும் அசாதாரண நிகழ்வுகளுக்கெல்லாம் மற்றவர்களைப் போல் பேய் பிசாசு தான் காரணம் என்றில்லாமல், மாறாக அறிவியல் காரணங்களைத் தேடும் பகுத்தறிவு மிகுந்த ஒரு வக்கீல். நிறையக் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் இந்த நாவலில் வந்து சென்றாலும் கணேஷ் கதாபாத்திரம் மட்டுந்தான் ஓரளவுக்கு வலுவாக வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் கதாபாத்திரம். மற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்கள் என் மனதிற்கு ஏனோ ஒட்டவில்லை. முக்கியமாக லீனா எனும் இந்த நாவலின் நாயகி கதாபாத்திரமும், கணேஷின் assistant ஆக வரும் வசந்த் கதாபாத்திரமும் நிறைய இடங்களில் எரிச்சல் உணர்வைத் தந்தது. நடக்கும் அமானுஷ்யங்களுக்கும் லீனாவிற்கும் சம்மந்தம் இருக்கிறது என்கிற பாணியில் தான் கதை நகர்கிறது என்றபோது, அவளின் கதாபாத்திரம் திடமாக இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே எனது எதிர்பார்ப்பாக இருந்தது. கதையில் வரும் அவ்வளவு twists and Turnsகளுக்கு எங்கேயாவது லீனாவின் character development தெரிய வரும் என்ற ஆர்வத்துடன் வாசித்ததற்கு ஏமாற்றம் தான் மிச்சம். லீனா, சுந்தர்.சி அவர்களின் பேய்ப் படங்களின் வரும் பேய்கள் போல makeup உடன் தான் கதை முழுவதும் வலம் வருகிறாள். அடுத்து வசந்த், இந்த நாவலின் Humor factorகென்றே படைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு character முற்றிலும் Adult humor . ஒன்று இரண்டு இடத்தில் தான் சிரிப்பு வந்தது. மற்ற இடத்தில் எரிச்சல் மட்டுமே எஞ்சியது. பதின்மூன்று வயது சிறுமிகளை வைத்து Adult humor செய்திருப்பதாலும் சுத்தமாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளமுடியவில��லை இது ஒரு நாவலே என்றாலும்.

குறைகள் நிறைய இருந்தாலும், இந்நாவல் கதையின் விறுவிறுப்பிற்கு எங்கேயும் தொய்வு இல்லை. ஆர்வமும், நேரமும் ஒத்துழைத்தால் ஒருவர் ஒருநாளில் வாசித்து முடித்துவிடலாம். Hologram, electro-magnetism போன்ற இயற்பியல் கருத்துக்களைக் கதைக் களத்தோடு அழகாகப் பொருந்தியிருப்பது எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதாவிற்கே உரிய பாணி என்று வாசிப்பவர்கள் கண்டிப்பாக உணர்வார்கள்.

The genre of thrillers is defined by books like these. Sujata's work written in 1983s before internet was a thing keeps you hooked till the very end (literally!).

Ganesh and Vasanth reach a village for due diligence of an estate from guardian to beneficiary. Except the beneficiary is an adolescents Leena who is tough to place with her weird swings. The Guardian tells them a chilling story of a family curse and haunting and as rational lawyers, they refuse to believe. Except when they see it with their own eyes and what chilling scenes!

Slowly, we find the book turn as a Ghost Vs Science explanation with the duo trying to explain the happening. Given we are almost 40 years ahead, it still gives you a good rational explanation with an absolute chilling end. The fact that both Ganesh and Vasanth are directly attacked and yet they keep going is a creative license. The police episodes don't add much value and I would assume they would have been more invested in the investigation than what happens in the book.

I've read a few books that works on the same concept - but none with the style of the master. Every "normal" theory to explain - the duo proposes and disproves it beyond suspicion. It also helps that the author keeps removing, quite violently, characters from the book (as hinted in the title).

முதன் முதலாக ஒரு புத்தகம் என்னை கலங்கடித்தது. வேண்டுமென்றே இரவு நேரத்தில் தான் படித்தேன். அப்பொழுதுதான் புத்தகத்தின் பயம் முழுமையாக நம்மை ஆக்கிரமிக்கும். :-)

புத்தகத்தின் முதற் பதிப்பு 1981 ஆம் ஆண்டு. ஆனால் வாத்தியார் கலக்கி எடுத்திருக்கிறார். ஹோலோகிராம், பார்கோட் இன்னும் என்னமெல்லாமோ அள்ளி தெளித்திருக்கிறார். பொறுமையாக இன்னொரு முறை படிக்க வேண்டும் அள்ளி தெளித்திருப்பதை புரிந்து கொள்ள. :-)

The first ever Sujata's novel that I read.

It still is works out as one of the best thriller/horror book even to this today. Considering the time it was written, the vast technical details he tried bring in, is amazing! Also, the logical explanations he tries to give to every scenario.
Though there are many questions left unanswered, he has brilliantly woven the story such that the ending is left to the reader to decide, whether it is technology or the sinister that lead the entire story. Brilliant at that!
The style of his writing appealed to me, a lot! There is no beating around the bush scenes or detailing too much into the characters or the places or even scene changes itself, trying to keep the book lengthier. This helped in keeping the pace of the book and I couldn't stop reading until I finished reading it.
My first encounter with Ganesh and Vasanth, though Vasanth is attractive with his wits, somewhere it doesn't appeal much with his menine characteristics. Ganesh is the mature and deserving to be a boss type.
Overall, the book is more than a good read, not the best though! (The bestest part is limited to the technical details considering the time the book was written)

This book was awesome...Actually to certain unpredictable things,we can give explanation in two ways 1. one from historical scriptures 2. from logical thinking deriving the possible solution whers science helps . For example, If u speak about, the world gonna get demolished in 2012 people speak about, 1. Some people say as per old scriptures given in bible or mayans calendar, 2. In another way people give out rational ideas y it should happ. This was clearly told in this book dealing with apparition. It was a very good thriller and I wud say pls dont read this book when u r alone.. lol...

Ganesh, a famous lawyer in Chennai and his junior, Vasanth, visits their client Leena viyasan's farm. Leena's uncle, Kumara viyasan, tells them that two years back a ghost possessed Leena and she killed a boy by drinking his blood. But Leena, 18 and innocent is about to become the heir of 10 million worth farm. Ganesh and Vasanth sees the ghost which appears to resemble leena. The next day they find a dead body in the farm. The dead body disappears from the police custody. The mystery is solved by the lawyers by debating science and supernatural theory.

I was pleasently surprised to see Ganesh and Vasdanth's characters right from page1. I was impressed by their cameo in Pesum Bommaigal and I wanted to read more and this one was perfect.

Sujatha's writing is execellent and his exuberance of youth in the dialogues of Ganesh and Vasanth is spellbounding.

The only regret was that when I badly wanted to know who was behind all this, Sujatha leaves the end to the reader's discretion.

Sujatha does it again !

Nobody can so easily blend science, ghosts and mystery into a master story !
The ghost parts give you chills that no horror movie managed to give you . The mandapam sequences are bone chilling .


The language so brilliant, story so crisp, suspense so curious and everything so perfect . The last line of the book reminds you of the last line of Aaaaah . Whoa !

The perfect book for a weekend or a long travel or whenever you're bored . Hats off, Sujatha !

Still Ganesh could not find any electronic device or speaker in that house.how did the Book "sila Vinodhangal" move automatically ? Several questions unanswered..

A character's personality and role is very important when it comes under "mystery-thriller" genre and I always take it very serious. Vasanth is irritating, not so funny!
May be I have been reading serious types of novels?
Though story line was good, I dont feel the "wow" sense in this book.

The first detective novel of sujatha that I read. I liked vasanth character and the way sujatha has used him in the story. A good page turner which some times makes us feel like not going any way but the end was decent.
The way ghost vs physics was handled carefully is something that is great. Go for it.

Lawyers Ganesh and Vasanth are visiting an estate to deal with some of its legal aspects. Leena is the owner of the estate and the caretaker is her uncle Kumara Vyasan. The lawyers start experience strange phenomena during their stay at the estate - voices from rooms, an apparition of ghost that looks very much like Leena, there are attacks on the lawyers and even murder. There is an myth circulating in the village that an ancestor's ghost is causing this havoc, but Ganesh will not accept it. He believes that this is a ploy by someone who is trying to steal Leena's estate ownership, while Vasanth is okay with the ghost theory and they both indulge in investigation to prove their respective point.

The only unsatisfactory aspect of the novel was the fluff around the mid-portion, where the events are repeated multiple times, without really proceeding into the action. The action kicks back in the final portions and the open-ended finale elevates the novels impact. A good read, but wouldn't count it amongst Sujatha's best.

Love the way the story unfolds, the interaction between Ganesh - Vasanth Duo is great, the imagination by the author is awesome. Also bridging btw science and supernatural is pretty commendable.

A hilarious and gripping novel with tech elements woven throughout.

This is the first Ganesh Vasanth detective novel I’ve read.

Vasanth’s saucy jokes and edgy humor perfectly balance Ganesh’s serious interrogation style, keeping the reader engaged throughout the mystery.

A few logical inconsistencies were noticeable—likely due to its original format as a weekly publication.

A binge-worthy book.

2016-இல் தமிழ் புதினங்கள் நான் வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்த காலகட்டத்தில் வைரமுத்து, ஜெயமோகன், கல்கி இவர்களது புத்தகங்களை தொடர்ந்து வாசித்து வந்தேன். எனக்கு பிடித்தமான மர்ம நாவல்களை தேடி அலைந்த அலைச்சல்; சுஜாதாவின் கணேஷ் வசந்தை அறிமுக படுத்தியது. அந்த புத்தகம் 'கொலையுதிர் காலம்'. அன்று ரசித்த அந்த புதினத்தை மீண்டும் இப்பொழுது ரசிக்க முற்பட்டேன். நான்கு வருடங்கள் ஓடிப்போய்விட்டதால் அறவே மறந்திருந்தேன் கதைக் களத்தை!

லீனா என்ற பெண்மணி எக்கச்சக்கமான சொத்துக்களுக்கு வாரிசு. அவளது சித்தப்பாவான குமார வியாசன் இத்தனை நாட்களாக அந்த சொத்துக்களை பராமரித்து வந்துள்ளார். அதை அடையப் போகும் தருணம் நெருங்கி வர; கணேஷ் மற்றும் வசந்த் சட்ட ரேகைகளை சரி பார்க்க வண்டலூர் தாண்டி இருக்கின்ற அவர்களுடைய இடத்திற்கு செல்கிறார்கள். எளிதில் முடியும் என்று நினைத்ததன் நடுவில் பல மர்மங்கள் அரங்கேறுகின்றன. தொடர்ந்து கொலைகள், காணாமல் போகும் பிணங்கள், எதிர் கொண்ட சாபம், பழி வாங்க துடிக்கும் ஆவி, லீனாவை ஆவி ஆட்கொள்வது என பல அமானுஷ்ய சம்பவங்கள் நிகழ்கின்றன. சந்தேகத்தின் நிழல் குமார வியாசன்மேல் படரும் தருணம் அவரும் கொலை செய்யப்படுகிறார். குழப்பங்கள் அதிகரிக்க அறிவியலா அல்லது பைசாசமா என்ற அதன் மர்ம முடிச்சை கணேஷ் வசந்த் இருவரும் சேர்ந்து அவிழ்ப்பதே கதை களம்.

சுஜாதா என்பவர் 80- 90 க்களில் மிகவும் பிரபலம் அடைந்த எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஒருவர். அறிவியல், மர்மம், காதல், குடும்பம், இலக்கியம் என்று பல ரகங்களில் எழுதியவர். அவர் கதைகள் என்றும் ஒரு தமிழ் படத்தை பார்க்கின்ற ஒரு பிரதிபலிப்பை தருகிறது. காலத்தை வெல்லும் அறிவியல் சார்ந்த நிறைய விஷயங்களை அவர் புத்தகங்களில் பார்க்கலாம். ஒரு தமிழ் படத்திற்கு தேவையான அனைத்தும் அவர் புத்தகங்களில் காணலாம் - பாடல்களை தவிர்த்து. அதனால் தான் என்னமோ திரை துறையுடன் பணியாற்றும் வாய்ப்பும் அவருக்கு கிடைத்தது! அதிலும் வெற்றி கண்டார்.

சரி, புத்தகத்திற்கு வருவோம்! கதையின் மர்மத்தை நன்றாகவே நிலைநாட்டியுள்ளார் சுஜாதா. இது இப்படி இருக்கக் கூடுமோ என்று நினைப்பதற்கும் வேறு சம்பவங்கள் நடந்து விடுகின்றன. அவ்வளவு பரபரப்பாக செல்கிறது கதை. என்னால் இப்படி இருக்க கூடுமோ என்று இந்த மர்மத்தை அணுக முயன்றபோதும் எதிர்மாறாக பல விஷயங்கள் நடந்தது குழப்பத்தை நன்றாக நிலைநாட்டியது.ஒரு கைப்பிடி அளவுக்குத் தான் கதாபாத்திரங்கள். அவர்களையும் நன்றாக பயன்படுத்த்தியுள்ளார். இருந்தாலும் லீனா இவ்வளவு வெகுளியாயிருப்பது என்னமோ என்னால் ஏற்க முடியவில்லை. நடுவில் தீபக்கின் பெயரில் சந்தேகத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும் நிகழ்வுகள் வெறும் திசை திருப்பும் நோக்கமாகவே எனக்கு பட்டது. ஆனால் மர்மத்தை கடைசி வரை நிலைநாட்டுவதில் வெற்றி கண்டுள்ளார் எழுத்தாளர். மர்ம முடிச்சுக்கள் அவிழும் தருணங்கள் நன்றாக வரையப்பட்டுள்ளது. இருந்தாலும் பல கேள்விகள் விடைகள் இல்லாமலே விடப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. மர்மம் அம்பலமான பிறகும் முடிவு கூட உங்கள் ஆற்றலின் படி என்பது போல் நிறைவு பெரும் விதம்; இன்னும் பல கேள்விகளை கேள்விகளாகவே விட்டு செல்கின்றன.

மொத்தத்தில் ஒரு நல்ல மர்ம படம் பார்க்கின்ற போல் ஓர் உணர்வு. நான்கு வருடங்கள் முன்பு படிக்கையில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தமான ஒரு மர்ம கதையாக இருந்த இப்புதினம் இக்காலகட்டத்தில் கூட என்னை வெகுவாக கவரவே செய்கின்றது. நான் படித்ததிலேயே முதன்மையான மர்ம புதினமா என்று கேட்டால்; அல்ல. இருந்தும் என்றைக்கும் என்னை ஈர்க்கும் தன்மை உடையதாகவே இருக்கும்.

Sujatha, man of wits and twists has woven the characters and the story really well.
Every chapter ends with a twist which gets unfolded in the start of the next chapter.
At first it may appear vague but once the ghost part starts appearing the story picks up the heat and speed. The astonishing part is when you are sure things are scientifically happened author stirs it up makes you believe about supernatural things. Mind you, this is a novel written in early 80's with scientific notions of 21st century. The beauty of the novel is that even in the last word of the novel the suspense is maintained. The witty and level headed pair of lawyers keep the reader glued in.
Storytelling is so realistic that the reader can relate to it easily and the character building is perfect too. To keep the reader happy, he has spiced it up with a sexy hot lady. There are many unanswered questions. As you know, never diverged from the plot too.
Overall, Amazing novel and lives it up for the ages to come. Timeless Thriller with quirky twists.
