A secret past. A chance encounter. A love that changes everything.
Colt Williamson never knew his father’s secret. Raised as a rancher’s son in America, he was unaware of his noble heritage—until tragedy strikes, leaving him not only reeling from his father’s death but also with a bum leg. Forced by his mother to journey to the elegant city of Bath for healing, whispers of his striking resemblance to a long-lost earl begin to spread, and Colt finds himself caught between the rugged life of an American rancher and the duty of stepping into his father’s title.
Penelope Sinclair has always viewed the world through rose-colored glasses. The daughter of a haberdasher, she enjoys her simple life, working alongside her family and spending time outdoors with her beloved nephew. But when she crosses paths with the surly American rancher, she finds a new passion in life, helping someone else find happiness.
Never before has she encountered someone so determined to reject life’s joys, or the love and help others offer, and she’s determined to change that. Can she help him adjust to a life he never wanted, all while discovering a love neither of them expected?
“I never figured I’d find myself again, darlin’, much less find joy in life after all that I lost. But you… you make me want to live again. I’ll do whatever it takes to be the man you deserve.”
A clean, kisses-only Regency romance.

Book 1: An Unexpected Earl Book 2: An Unfortunate Alliance Book 3: An Unclaimed Heart Book 4: An Unforeseen Attachment Book 5: An Unrivaled Match Book 6: An Unwavering Heart
This was a great story!! I loved that our 2 main characters, Colt and Penny come from different countries and backgrounds. Colt is a cowboy from America and after his leg is injured badly he is strongly urged by his mother to visit Bath, England. There he meets Penny. Penny works in a haberdashery with her brother and father. When Colt comes in to get some clothes more suited to England, Penny assists him. From then on their relationship progresses. I love them together! When Colt gets some unexpected news it complicates things a bit. I thought this story was really well done! I was captivated from the very beginning. I loved the fact that Penny worked in a haberdashery. I don’t know why, but I found it very interesting. Like I said I loved Colt and Penny’s relationship. They are so adorable! I also loved Penny’s family, especially her nephew. I wasn’t expecting a bad guy in this story so that was a fun surprise, haha. Overall, I loved this story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
England is worlds away from what Colt Williamson is used to. Will he return to what is familiar or forge a new path with Penny Sinclair by his side?
Colt sure was surly. But it was understandable given his grief, pain, and having to navigate an unfamiliar place. He was very much a fish out of water. Thankfully, he found a friend and something more in Penny. And his friendship with John was so sweet.
It was refreshing and a little funny to see Regency England from the point of view of a Texan and, conversely, to see the English people’s reaction to a Texas cowboy 😆
While the majority of the plot is about Colt learning to fit in and his romance with Penny, things got very suspenseful toward the end 😮💨
I hope we’ll get to see more of James and Isabelle, as well as find out what happens with Eleonore and William.

I instantly fell in love with this book. Not only does the FMC have curly red hair, but she is also stubborn, adores her nephew, and cares deeply about those closest to her. It felt like someone wrote a book about me…ok well maybe a long lost relative seeing as this takes place in the 1800s and I don’t have a ruggedly handsome cowboy in my life. Speaking of…I adored Colt. It was so fun to watch Penny break down his walls of grumpiness and watching his whole demeanor change was so beautiful. And who doesn’t love a man with a southern accent? As much as I loved these two…I feel there is another character that deserves a glowing review: Lord Ducksworth. I’m pretty sure he’s the actual hero in this story. iykyk Michelle’s books are always like a breath of fresh air and this book is no different. While there are definitely moments of heartbreak and healing as well as a moment of heart pounding action, this book just wraps you in warmth like a blanket on a cold day.
This was a really sweet, easy read! The plot and characters really had me immediately. I was very curious where it was all going to lead to, it was one of those books that it felt like there were so many holes to be filled in and it felt like they just couldn't, but they did, and perfectly! 🩷
Penny is the sweetest, and so caring towards others, I loved her right away! I loved how she took such good care of her family, especially her nephew. 🩷
Colt really goes through a lot - loss, pain, and now a disability. You really feel good struggles as he goes to Bath, England for the first time, after living in Texas his whole life. But the healing and acceptance is so inspiring, and Colt & Penny growing with each other and individualy is perfect. 🩷
If you enjoy a clean, closed-door sweet Regency with some western vibes, I highly recommend this one!

I Have Thoroughly Enjoyed This Sweet Regency Romance By Michelle Angus. This Is My First Read By This Author & It Won’t Be My Last. I Was Swept Away In This Story Immediately & Finished It In Two Days. The Love Story Between Colt & Penny Unfolded Sweetly & Slowly. There Were Conflicts, There Was Laughter, There Was Action & There Was Love & Admiration. This Author Knew How To Mold A Story That Kept My Attention From Start To Finish.
One Of My Fav Quotes ~ Clearing His Throat, He Brought One Of Her Hands To His Lips And Pressed A Kiss To Her Palm. “I Can’t—I Won’t—Go Back. Not After Holding Heaven In My Arms.”
My Review Is Totally My Own Opinion & No One Twisted My Arm To Give It! I’m So Thankful For The Opportunity To Encourage Others To Explore New Authors & Great Reads!

-AN UNEXPECTED EARL, is a dear story that will take you on an adventure where characters may need to adjust to a life never wanted, all while discovering a love unexpected! Weaved with witty banter, delightful, heart, plenty of swoony moments, and an unexpected hidden identity plot twist, will have your full attention and feelings! Watching dear characters overcome challenges while not letting disabilities hold them back was inspiring! Seeing characters pure goodness and kind ways while sacrificing at times for others was both tender and motivating. But, most of all, it was watching characters bravely confront family expectations and choosing their own hearts for a happily ever after that really tugged at my heart! Despite the uncertainty of the future ahead, choosing to forge ahead together, is simply beautiful! This is definitely a great story worth reading that also sets the stage beautifully for more books by other dear authors in this series! I am here for it all!💙📚💯✨

“If he let her go, he was fairly certain hed be giving up his heart instead.”
An Unexpected Earl is the first book in the Hearts of Somerset series and is a hidden-identity, love at first sight, forbidden-love story.
Colt, a rancher from Texas, is seriously injured in an accident that also kills his father. Seeking to help him heal, his mother persuades him to visit Bath for its healing waters. Upon arriving in Bath, he finds out that his father was exactly who he thought he was and that he has a whole family that he had been unaware of. As the heir to an Earldom, Colt has some decisions to make regarding his future.
Colt is a strong and stubborn character who is fiercely loyal and protective of those he cares about. He fights to overcome his challenges after his accident and doesn’t let his disability hold him back.
Penny is a sunshine character who is strong and sweet and always wants the best for everyone, even if that means she has to sacrifice her own wants.
It was so sweet to watch Colt and Penny’s story unfold, and especially entertaining how Colt’s American ways threw off members of the English ton. Colt and Penny immediately feel drawn to each other and are forced to confront family expectations and their own hearts in order to find their happy endings.
This was a super sweet read and a great start to a new series. Definitely check this out if you like recency love stories.
Thank you to the author for including me on her ARC team, all opinions expressed are my own.
Content warning: Toxic family member Excessive drinking from that family member Gun violence (brief, mild) No language Kisses only (moderate detail)
This is part of the Hearts of Somerset series. It is a 6 book series written by 6 different authors. Each story is a standalone plot and can be read in any order. Each book is set in Bath in the Regency period and has some crossover characters, mainly a troublesome duck that connects them together. They are all kisses only books.
The premise of this story was interesting. The characters had real potential. I was just a bit distracted by other elements in the plot. And for me personally, those things tended to overshadow the actual story.
There were some liberties taken with actual history, so please note that this is definitely historical fiction. I realize sometimes authors bend facts a bit to fit their stories. Just be aware that if you are bothered by that type of literary license, this may not be your favorite book. In some parts it tends to read as a contemporary story set in the Regency time period.
I know many readers really enjoyed this book for what it was. If you are looking for an escape from reality with humor, this may be the book for you.
I was given the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Content: no language, brief violence (mild, not gory at all), kissing only, mild Christian elements (characters go to church a couple of times, reference to praying)
Genre/Tropes: Historical Romance (regency), friends to lovers, class difference
My thoughts: This was my first book by Michelle and it was a lot of fun! I was *not* expecting my regency to have a cowboy element, but it was great! I love how Colt and Penny’s friendship grows, how they fall for each other (while remaining somewhat clueless as to the other’s feelings for a bit), and their playful comments and little touches. Also, Penny’s nephew John totally stole the show! If you love sweet and thoughtful characters, who put each other before everything and everyone else, I think you will absolutely love this book! This is book 1 of an interconnected series by different authors, all can be read as standalones!
I loved the unique plot in this one! We have seen several books feature an English gentleman in the Wild West, but I have never read one about a cowboy in England! Colt was an endearing hero, and my heart went out to him with all the tragedy and hardship he had endured. But he was resilient and his character arc was so good and inspiring! I loved the way he developed friendships and kept a cool head in tense situations. Penny was pure sunshine! I loved her selfless and giving nature and how she wasn't afraid to help her friends or to let Colt in to her life and heart. But she always put others first and I loved the character arc for her and she learned how to truly balance this! The romance was so sweet and heartfelt! I was cheering them on from the moment they met! I don't want to give away any spoilers but you don't want to miss this one!!
The Brief: In Texas, Colt breaks his leg on the ranch and he’s not gettingback on his feet as fast as he wants. His mamma sends him to Bath to heal.
The Debrief: Helloooo Colt. This was such a delightful twist on a regency romance. It was kind of like Dr. Quinn’s Sully? It should be a movie. So much fun and heart crammed into this rancher with a secret past. When he meets Penny, his life finds purpose. So much to love:
Johnny boy Penny’s family grandmother Colt’s cowboyness Lord Duckworth dual POV swoony kisses only part of a multi author series letters
The Rhyme: Texas may be big, but Colt isn’t feeling settled inside. When Penny starts to fill his heart, will his future be easier to decide?
This is book 1 in the Hearts of Somerset series. I might be kind of into cowboys a little after this book. I love the fish out of water aspect for Colt in going to Bath. Penny is such a sweet and kind soul and kudos for her for keeping up trying to win Colt over. I would have dipped at the amount of work (which is probably why I’m still single). They are definitely that grumpyxsunshine couple and I adore them for it. Penny has such a big heart and you just want her to have everything. The twists and turns that have Colt finding out the truth to his life and situation is wild and you kind of get mad at his mom for a minute for never telling him the truth. But of course they get their happy ending, even through the dangerous situations. Not even Lord Duckworth can stop their love IYKYK.
I really enjoyed Colt and Penny's story in this book series set in Bath, England. I had read one of the other books before this one and saw glimpses of Colt appear here and there and I was intrigued with him. He embodies the independent Texas & American spirit as he purposely shuns so many of the cultural expectations of the society he is thrust into. I love how he gets Penny to come around to join him in overcoming the obstacles that face them. This is a must read!
Successful Texas rancher, Colt Williamson has been through it. Losing his father and ruining one of his legs during a cattle drive accident has left Colt limping permanently and unable to contribute to the ranch life he has known since he was born.
At the encouragement of his mother, he leaves her behind along with his brother and their ranch to try the healing waters of Bath, England.
Sticking out like a sore thumb, Colt doesn’t sound like those in Bath, and he certainly doesn’t dress like them. Directed to the shop of the Sinclair’s he is able to be dressed and ready for the most unexpected news coming his way.
Faced with the choices his own father made years earlier, Colt realizes the sacrifices and responsibilities his parents carried to allow his life to be his own, and the ability he now has to provide a path for his Grandmother, Aunt and cousin to be safe.
An Unexpected Earl, is in many ways a gift to Colton as the burden of title, wealth, and privilege become his and he realizes the only person he would/could bear that burden with is Penny Sinclair. —
The growth of an awkward and uncomfortable meeting into a loving, trusting, and dedicated relationship is the beauty of the journey found in this novel. It’s woven to perfection with layers and nuance.
As the title suggests, this book starts in an unexpected way with Colt living in America and loving his time there despite hardships. His journey to England leads him to a life that he never anticipated happening and finding love that he wasn’t planning on. Penelope is just the right amount of sunshine to Colt’s grumpiness and I like how she helps him acclimate to the ways of society while also trying to help her own family.
An Unexpected Earl is the first book in the new multi-author series - Hearts of Somerset and can be read as a standalone.
A Texan cattle rancher, Bath England, story set in the Regency Era. Yes please!! This is the combination of everything I love, and the story I never knew I needed!! ♥️🫠🔥😂😍
Michelle has written a truly unique story that I could not get enough of!
Colt is an American cattle rancher who was injured in a cattle drive. His mother encourages him to seek the healing waters of Bath. He takes the long arduous journey to get there and he finds himself sticking out like a sore thumb. The rumors begin as to who he really is…and he is pushed to his limits when he finds himself having to decide between his own happiness or taking on the responsibility of his inheritance.
Penny works for her father’s haberdashery and finds joy in befriending everyone around her and putting a smile on their face. She has a very tight bond with her family and she adores her nephew! When a tall mysteriously dressed man walks into her father’s shop, her whole world is about to change.
Colt’s sincere pursuit of Penny is seriously so swoony and sweet! His letters, gifts to John (Penny’s nephew), how he uses her given name, his formal application to become a suitor, and how his southern charm is written in this story makes me feel so giddy even thinking about it!!
“The waters of Bath hadn’t healed him, but coming here had” ♥️
Thank you to the author for my gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.
He came to Bath for healing. He found so much more.
If Michelle Angus writes it—I’m reading it. No questions asked. Part of the Hearts of Somerset series, this sweet and heartfelt Regency romance reminded me exactly why I love this genre so much. It’s been a while since I’ve stepped into a proper ballgown-and-brooding-gentleman story, and wow did this one give me all the good vibes.
Colt Williamson isn’t your typical Regency hero—he’s American, rugged, and absolutely uninterested in the life his father’s noble title has thrust upon him. Penny, on the other hand, is sunshine in human form: the daughter of a haberdasher with a big heart and a quiet strength that draws everyone in—including Colt.
I loved the dynamic between them—the slow build, the trust that grew, the way they just fit. And her sweet nephew added such a light, joyful thread to the story. Plus, Colt’s gruff cowboy energy in high society? Yes please.
I’m secretly hoping we get Penny’s friend’s story next—she totally piqued my interest! Thank you to the author for the ARC. All thoughts are my own—and this one was a joy to read from start to finish.
If you’re looking for a clean, kisses-only Regency with a fresh twist, heart-melting moments, and characters who feel like home—add this to your TBR immediately!
What a sweet story! I really felt for Colt! He had a rough experience and was still grappling with the ramifications, both in terms of his physicality and the loss of his father. He was adjusting to Bath and felt out of place there. However, despite his uncertainty at the future, there was something very stable about Colt. Even while he learned about his inheritance, he had a grasp on who he was and did not try to become a different person when realizing his responsibility. Colt understood the weight of his title and at the same time he grew to understand the importance of love in his life. I do wish we could have seen more of his family and their interactions. It was really sweet to see him get to know his father’s family. His grandmother was quite the character! I would have also loved to see more of his mom and brother. It definitely made sense with the story, but I would love to see more of all of Colt’s family! Penny was so sweet! She felt so genuine and she was so thoughtful. I admired her sense of honor. She connected quickly with Colt and I thought they were adorable together. They were both such genuine people and such lovely characters. I loved Penny's relationship with her family and how they took care of one another. They really cared for each other and I especially loved Penny’s relationship with John. I love kids in stories and he was so cute! He felt very much like a child, but still with his own personality. They also are characters I would love to see more of! The story was really engaging and I loved getting to know all the characters. I hope to see more of them in future books! It was a very satisfying ending. This is a sweet historical Romance with only kissing. It also includes the death of a loved one and characters dealing with it. I received an ARC.
Blurb: Colt Williamson never knew his father’s secret.

Great book! The first in the Hearts of Somerset is a story of healing, frienship and change. Colt is an endearing grumpy and Penny is the sunshine everyone needs in their life.
I love the meassurement scene and the makeover too. 😁 And Lord Duckworth... 😂
This book also shows that among the difficulties you can change how you deal with them.
[2.5 stars] I really liked the first half of this book, and loved the idea and unique characters. The MMC is an American cowboy transported to regency England. The FMC is a merchant’s daughter. The set up for the story was really good, intriguing and smooth… But then it went downhill, and fast.
The book grows increasingly corny as it goes, becoming near brutal by the end. The pace becomes slow and meandering, the plot and relationship tension forced… I desperately wanted to DNF it, but I made it so far that I forced myself to finish. It’s unfortunate, especially since I liked the premise so much, but it’s definitely not a book I’d recommend.
Content: There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence, but it’s not gory or excessive. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. I suppose there’s supposed to be a Christian message, but it’s very light. The book also uses an irreverent expression that I absolutely hate (“the man upstairs”) 3 times.
THE MEET CUTE!!! All the hearts. Seriously. I love how awkward Colt is upon first meeting Penny! This story was super sweet and charming. It's always fun to get the 'American' perspective in an MC and see those differences unfold. Colt is rough and rugged...and powerless to stop himself from falling for Penny, which made this entire book just so endearing. Michelle brings in a few surprises too, that keeps the story interesting, in addition to providing that perfect romantic chemistry and tension.
After a tragic accident, Colt Williamson makes his way to Bath, England to recuperate and heal. While he is going for the restorative waters for his leg, a surprising set of circumstances occurs in which he also receives healing for his heart. I enjoyed this story of loyal and protective Colt and the sweet and selfless Penny Sinclair.
I liked that there was not only a love story, but there were other side stories too. There is the possibility of a relationship for Penny’s widowed brother; a mystery that I hope to see its conclusion in a future story, and a diabolical villain.
Things to enjoy: opposites attract America and England Lord Duckworth young nephew suitor applications Penny’s family justice
This is the first book in the Hearts of Somerset series, but I believe it can be read as a standalone. This is a collaborative effort by several authors, and I am looking forward to reading more of the books. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This book was a bright spot in the week for me. Starting in America as a Rancher you see events unfold that have Colt being put on a ship bound for Bath in England. This sets the books apart from all other regency books that I have read, the clash of cultures (language, dress, etiquette) it was a delight.
My favourite character however was John (Penelope's nephew) he was a little ray of sunshine. One scene close to the start of the book had me gushing all over this young boy and hoping he one day will get a book of his own when he is of age!
