A historical western cowboy romance novel about a mail order bride. In 1870, Hazel Lynn Morgan was a girl right on the verge of becoming a woman. She lives in a small town on a farm in Ohio, where nothing new or exciting ever happens. She has survived this long by reading books about exotic places and using her imagination, or what her Ma has termed, her “Magical Thinking.” Will a simple mail order bride ad placed by a cattle rancher in Texas named Heath Key change Hazel’s life for the better? Or will the secret that Heath is hiding threaten to ruin both of their lives? Will the man who has been by Heath’s side as his best friend since childhood bring them closer or come between them in the end? Follow Hazel on her journey to adulthood as she discovers that sometimes you have to close your eyes to really be able to see.
I hate writing one star reviews, but this book read like it was written by a beginning writer and not any beginning writer but a teen still in school. It was really telling, some parts seemed out of order, and it jumped pov a lot making it difficult to follow.
The formatting made the text all blend together and hard to read. Usually I work hard at finding a redeeming quality in any book I try, but I can't think of one. The nearly 18 year old heroine acts a lot younger than her age. I guess I should be happy I got it for free.
It’s 1870 and Hazel Lynn Morgan is ready to leave her family’s home in Ohio. Her family isn’t ready to let her leave, but Hazel is bored with Ohio. She wants to see the rest of the world. When she comes across a newspaper ad for a mail order bride, she’s more than a little interested.
The ad is placed by a cattle rancher in Texas, which is quite far from Ohio. Hazel doesn’t want to leave her family, but she doesn’t want to miss this opportunity. She begins a correspondence with the cattle rancher, but she suspects he’s hiding a secret.
Hazel agrees to travel to Texas with her father. She is determined to see if this man is the man she dreamed of to be her husband.
I don’t usually read historical fiction, but this is a short story and I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. It has characters I loved right from the start. The story grabbed me in with the first page. I really enjoyed it and plan to read the rest of the series. Just as a warning - it’s a short story with a cliffhanger at the end. I adore these kinds of stories, but I know they aren’t for everyone.
Hazel Morgan found life living along the Erie Canal on a farm boring. She found a newspaper by chance and an article for a man seeking to correspond with a woman to come live and start a life with him in Texas. This started a correspondence for several months until she found out that he had lied to her about one aspect of his life. When he told her the truth she realized that learning to love the man within she could forgive him because she was Blinded by Love and his scars did not matter.
The story development was realistic. The character development of Hazel, as she turned into a woman concerned for others rather than herself and accepted her role in life as a mature young woman was heart warming. Heath Key owned one of the biggest ranches in Texas, was a gentleman and despite the lie to hide his scars a lovely man for Hazel to fall in love with.
I give this book, more than 5 stars.I try never to judge a person on the way they look. I have a friend whose husband, some would described as Quizmoto, but the love they share is beautiful. Just like the couple in this story. This is a sweet story! I almost didn't read this book, because someone said they didn't like the ending. I said on Kobo that nothing was wrong with endimg, but I've change my mind, the ending was. . . But I still give it more than 5 stars. :-)
The story was nice, but it left you hanging at the end. I found several errors in the book. Twice the sentences had extra words, something that a proofreader would have caught. If you want the whole story you have to buy the next book.
If this author had simply relied upon her ability to write a good story that began at the beginning and ended at the end of the book, I might have given more stars, because it was a good story that carried a wonderful message, but, when the author throws something in at the very end to (in her mind) get you to buy more of her books, then she is lucky I even gave it 2 stars. She is her worst enemy, if the book had had an ending, I would have been looking for more in this series because I liked her writing. But, when she tries to force me to buy the next book so I can find out what happens on the cliff on which she left me hanging, she just lost a reader. And, proofreading is something she should look into. I doubt very much that this story took place in 1952. Read your book, it is there.
Hazel is a young woman who reads a lot and finds no man in Ohio, where she lives, is interesting enough to consider as a husband. Heath is rancher who was horribly disfigured in a fire when he was younger. Heath lives in Texas. He decides to place an ad in a matrimonial publication. Hazel sends a picture and expresses an interest in corresponding with Heath. Heath has no pictures because of his disfigurement. He sends Hazel a picture of his friend.
Both Hazel and Heath are interested in marriage, but what will happen when Hazel learns that Heath has deceived her. Read this book to see if Hazel can forgive his deception and marry Heath anyway. Enjoy this book.
I chose this book because it is one of my favourite genres. I enjoy learning how two complete strangers correspond with each other, agree to meet and eventually fall in love. This story features a young women, Hazel, from Ohio who moves to Texas for love after corresponding with a man named Heath, rancher.
There's just a bump in the story... Heath, who is seeking Hazel loves her - SO does his best friend. I am wondering how this all play out. I have an idea, but still look forward to more the next book and/or books in this series. Well done Ms Wyett.
This book has an unusual but lovely twist requiring the bride to see with her heart. There isn't much character development but the plot is adequate. There are numerous serious errors that stand out. A few include: chapter one includes a eucalyptus tree which does not grow in Ohio. Then the time line is off, the first of many times. Chapter 7 mentions starting the ranch in 1952. Chapter 9 goes back to October before skipping to December again. The inability for a consistent and rational time line to be maintained is quite frustrating. Lastly, the ending just isn't there. It seems to stop mid chapter without rhyme or reason.
The premise for this story was great and immediately got me invested. The writing was smooth and built the drama steadily.
I did, however, find one example of the heroine's name being changed to Sarah and then abruptly back to Hazel in the space of a couple of paragraphs.
I really liked both characters and wanted to see how it ended. I won't though. If I have to buy another book to get one complete story, I'll pass. That feels deceptive and I don't participate.
The characters are enjoyable with strong family values. This appears to be the "whole" story for these main characters; about 2/3 of the way through, a subplot develops which may be the introduction of the next book in the series. Whether or not the main characters in this story continue in the next book remains to be seen.
There are a few grammatical errors (including the wrong date) and one obscenity.
Their romance started with a letter. Hazel fell in love with Heath just from his letters. When she found out about his deformity she knew it wouldn't matter. This is a wonderful story of two people falling in love and overlooking a deformity. I believe you will enjoy this story.
The first kind of interesting book I've read so far and it's a partial book lost total interest and I won't be buying the second book I'm sure that's not a complete book either
This was a great book. Once I started the book I did not put it down until I was finished. Next, I had to buy the next book! Very enjoyable with lots of love for family and a man!
This is a very sweet clean read. Wonderfully well written.the characters are fun a dramatic. Love will lead your heart where it needs to go. Hazel and Heath have a connection just from writing to each other.
This was a BEAUTIFUL story of the classic BEAUTY and the BEAST! I liked how they wrote first and the connection they had through letters! And I loved the father's protection!
I enjoyed the book but I hate endings that stop in the middle of a story. When a book ends by starting another book with no ending to the first one I won't bother to hang on to the "hook". I prefer a stand alone book.
She signs up to be a mailorder bride and falls for the man she is corresponding with. He has a secret and sends his best friend with a letter to explain why he hasn’t sent a photo. She believes that his scars won’t make a difference
Sorry. I just don't want to cope with a book ending badly. I cared about the characters, but don't leave me hanging. I suppose it's meant to make you buy the next book in the series. The writing/editing just isn't worth it.
I rarely read historical or western, but this book drew me in. The historical aspect was interesting as you don't really hear about the history of Ohio. The slow build-up of romance was sweet, and the ending made you want to read the next book.
Book is much too short. Thank you Ms. Wyett for writing such a nice story. Nice love story, but not complete. Good characters and the setting is wonderful.
A good clean story. Could use another exit as Hazel was called Sarah at one point and the dates jumped from December to October then back again. Got a little confusing there.
