Last Man Standing

Rate this book
Last Man Standing picks up where Blood Vengeance left off, with most of the book taking place over a twenty-four hour span. Drake, Mai, Dahl and Alicia find themselves pitted against eight of the deadliest assassins on the planet – forced into an extreme tournament where just one can make it out alive.

Only Matt Drake’s greatest nemesis – Coyote – knows all the rules, and nothing will stop her from destroying everything he loves. Not the destruction of the unwitting town that hosts the tournament, not the demolition in combat of its biggest hotel, not the battle that rages on the edge of town. Amidst the annihilation of the Ninth Division and the emergence of the Pythians as a significant enemy, Drake and the team must fight for their lives against not only their deadliest foe, but an army of mercenaries and each other, to determine who will be. . .

The synopsis suggested a very entertaining storyline which would provide thrills and suspense, sadly this didn't translate into the novel. The storyline was very dependant on having read the preceding novels which didn't really allow a new reader to get into the novel as the author failed to give any explanation of the characters or the back story which made the first thirty percent of the novel very hard going. When the novel actually started to become a story in its own right the storylines weren't linked together in a coherent manner and all seemed to be very basic and lacking imagination. The scenarios seemed to be effortlessly escaped by the protagonists which robbed the novel of any realism and suspense. The introduction of the Phythians added nothing to the story and actually subverted attention away from the main plot which was infuriating as they didn't do anything. When I started the novel I had hopes that the story and action would be similar to Matthew Reilly; unfortunately I was hugely disappointed as the novel was severely lacking in every aspect. Overall I didn't enjoy the novel and won't be reading anything further by this author

I have read all of David's book and with each one I think it could not get better but at the next installment I am proven wrong. David Leadbeater definitely has IT, with Matt Drake 8 I started reading thinking that "I will just read a chapter or so then go to sleep..." wrong again I literally did not put it down until I finished the book. I am happy to rate not only the book but also the author with 5 stars.

Last Man Standing (Matt Drake 8) - a review by Rosemary Kenny

No archaeological adventures this time, but nevertheless Last Man Standing, Book 8 in David Leadbeater's Matt Drake series, doesn't stint the excitement or the action, in this thriller.
It continues on from Drake and his team's defeat of arch-Nemesis Blood King, with the arrival of a new enemy- Coyote - a female assassin, hired to complete Kovalenko's Blood Vengeance - and conclude it with Drake's death.
Needless to say with the love and loyal support of his SPEAR team, Drake's not going down without a fight and what a (literal) fight it promises to be, with a Gladiator-style tournament, the Last Man Standing, with a diversity of bloodthirsty killers who've been promised a fortune if all (but one) kill each other, while the Coyote will deal Drake the coup de grace.
To ensure the participation of Drake, Mai, Alicia and Dahl, their loved ones have been taken prisoner and threatened with extreme torture and death, if they refuse.
Who will be the Last Man, (or woman) Standing?
Read Last Man Standing, (Matt Drake 8), by David Leadbeater to find out the fascinating truth!

Very cliche

All the cliches were on display. A third secret organization bend on world conquest was introduced. Another safe house was attacked. Hoping the next one has some originality

Thrilling

Once again I couldn't put it down a gripping rollercoaster of action adventure and intrigue, brilliant. Now deciding whether to continue with book 9 or read the Alicia Myles books first

A SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW:

Stop me if you've heard this: Every safe house is raided, constantly keeping SPEAR members in danger and on the run? The team fights against crazy villains, all while keeping a smart-ass banter? A secret organization bent on ruling the world emerges? This book felt like a rehash of previous books and, honestly, wasn't very interesting. Yes, we find out about Coyote, but even that was just another action-movie cliche.

If you've read up to this point, and plan on continuing with the series, then I guess you have to read it. At the end of the Kindle version, David Leadbeater discusses the next book in the series and it sounds like it might be good. So keep with it or let this series go? That is the question...

This is a review for the books one through eight of the series.

Dragging this story out for eight books was not neccessary. The first four books about the tombs of the gods is a good story, which could easily have been combined into a single book, maybe a trilogy, with an ending.

Books five through eight however, are a tedious read involving a perpetual series fights between the good guys and bad guys that lacked any ingenuity or stoy telling prowse. Here, the Spear Team (good guys), knowing that they are fighting ruthless, evil forces, always seem to say - stop or I'll shoot - then the bad guys to get away and the story moves on to the next fight.

Book 8 of the Matt Drake series starts straight after the events of book 7. Still devastated after the blood vendetta, the SPEAR team are still recovering and are heading for the final confrontation with Coyote. This book had a lot to live up to after the non stop action of the last book, it nicely completes the story and sets the scene for the next act. As usual a great book from David, with good characters supporting Matt. Alicia is getting her own series, as should the mad Swede!!

Well we've been waiting a long time for the showdown, and well worthwhile wait it is. Action coming in thick and fast on all sides no one is safe who will be "The last man standing". Will Coyote get their just reward! Excellent book David really looking forward to Alicia's spin off and of course to the mega crossover book. Keep up the excellent work and thank you for so much enjoyment.

Glad Drake found and rid the world of coyote!

Matt Drake and crew did it again. They rid the world of another bad guy or should I say woman. Thanks again Mr. Leadbeater for another wonderfully crafted mystery-thriller. You books have to keep all of your readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to the end. Look forward to reading the next book.

Love this series

David Leadbeater does a wonderful job with all the book in this series and Last Man Standing did not disappoint. As with all of the other books in this series, Last Man Standing is action packed and attention grabbing. It is highly recommended to start with book one to understand all the characters.

Great book

This is a wonderful book. Like all its predecessors, it is hard to set down. It leaves you wanting to read the next one. Mr Ledbetter is truly one of the great writers, and similar to Cleve Cussler as to writing truly great fiction and adventure books!
